The internal structure of Walnuts and Pecans are really similar so if you've only seen the shelled nuts, it's the one that's closest to what it actually is.

We use walnuts a lot in our cuisine where I come from and our chefs never use the nutcracker. A trick one chef taught me was to place the walnut on a hard base on the flat (bottom) side and whack on the pointy end with a mallet or something. What it does is that the force is distributed equally, and a vertical crack appears on non-seam sides. Then you simply pull away the shell and you get a full-brain wallnut. Took me a little bit of practice to adjust the force needed to whack.... But once you figure that out, works like a charm.... Every time...
