    It's amazing how much faster things go with good work flow. I wish I had some of that...
    Blinds look great! (from Facebook)

    This gives me hope. I was starting to believe that I was the only glutton for punishment, making tons of repetitive cuts and pieces. I'm making my wife a super sized thread and bobbin holder with several hundred spindles. You are the man.

    A heck of a lot of work, but they're sure going to look nice. Wooden blinds are so attractive.

    Looking good! When making all those little pieces, I can see where a cnc machine would really come in handy if you were to make more of these blinds! Good work.

    Great work. I applaud your patience... I would have given up after 8 minutes. Maybe motorize the blinds for a big cool factor.

    Great job John. Someday all these negative people may understand that its not about getting done. Its about the doing. If we just wanted the blinds, we would just go buy them. Its that we want to make them.

    Those darn little bits. I always keep 3 or 4 of those small sizes handy at all times!

    Man, that looks great! I admire your patience - It looks darned tedious, but it sure looks like it's paying off nicely. Makes me wish for a magical die that would cleanly cut those knuckles out with no further shaping or sanding... (now, where'd I put my magic lamp...)

    Router up a length of moulding to the knuckle profile, (maybe cut and drill short blocks ) and slice and dice.

    Looking good I wonder if coat hanger or a TIG filler rod for welding would work for your wire might be stiffer. The blinds are going to look great Thanks John.

      i was thinking the same thing. just got get any dress clothes dry cleaned and get the hangers to make blinds.

    • @IBuildIt
      @IBuildIt  9 років тому

      Backyard Woodworking Coat hanger is a good source for the wire. It is the right size. The pins don't have to be especially stiff, though, so the hanger wire would be better since it's easier to cut.

    John Heisz The blinds are coming along great John. Maybe I missed it, but what was the reason for swapping from ply to hardboard? chipout?

      Bellevue Woodshop Thanks, I actually got one assembled today. The plywood I used for the first knuckles chips too easily.

    Starting to take shape. If you decide to paint them I suggest that you paint one side white and one side black. So you can chose of you want to reflect more or less light. Just a thought.

      ***** These blinds only open to 90 degrees because of where the control rod is.

    That's an intricate little puzzle there. Any idea how much time is used for these? It sure would be cool to make your own blinds!

  • @catfishcabbie3914
    @catfishcabbie3914 8 років тому

    It's just my idea that maybe to make your small pieces is to make them all in one 2X2 then cut them into the shape you need to go on the end of the blind slats. Better to describe is make the shape of your piece at about 24" long then cut them on your table saw 3/16" to go on the ends. but What do I know Your way might be easier.

    wood grain should look pretty good. i guess a can of spray paint is very cheap any way so you could paint them later. Maybe ibuildit.ca blue even!

    Did you give any thought to temporarily attaching over-sized knuckle blanks together and shaping them on the table saw/router table?

    • @IBuildIt
      @IBuildIt  9 років тому

      krtwood Not specifically, mainly because I know that something like that would probably take longer to do than cutting them out and shaping them individually. Besides, they don't need to be perfectly identical, just close. Some kind of plastic 1x2 that I could shape then cut slices off would be ok, but I don't have that.

    • @krtwood
      @krtwood 9 років тому

      I Build It
      For me it's more about managing my energy and tolerance for tediousness. Even if it wasn't any faster than I could theoretically do it individually, I know I would most likely end up dragging it out for twice as long or if I did power through it I'd give myself a nice long break afterwards. So it might be slower for the process but faster for the project.

    • @IBuildIt
      @IBuildIt  9 років тому

      krtwood It took less than 2 hours to make all of the knuckles for three sets of blinds, so it's not really that big of a deal. It took longer than that to make the slats, and that was for just one set. There's no getting around the tedium when making these blinds!

    John. Wasn't it better to by new blinds at home depot instead? seeing how much effort it takes to cut, build, essamble.etc.
