This IS NOT me complaining about comments! I LOVE getting comments, both ones that praise and the ones that criticize or point out mistakes. Please listen to what I say in the video!
A bit of a sidetrack into human psychology to look at the unspoken interaction a viewer on UA-cam has with the person making the video.
Even though you may not recognize it, there is an immediate reaction to the perceived status ranking each has.
That can play out for the viewer three ways:
    - increased respect.
    - neutral (neither more or less respect)
    - a feeling of resentment, depending upon how the viewer as an individual usually responds to someone that he thinks is above him or is doing better than he is - more prosperous or in a more favourable position.
It can also depend upon whether the viewer agrees or disagrees with what the person making the video is saying.
But one thing is common, and that's the unconscious (or conscious) perception of a hierarchy where the viewer is below the person making the video in status.
Of course this only really applies to people who watch UA-cam videos regularly and are familiar with the platform.
A casual viewer probably won't be subject to the status dynamic, since he may not see anything special about making videos, and may actually look down on those of us that do.
In any case, most people who make videos here (eventually) see the viewers as I describe.
That's not to say they consciously look down on them, but they won't be affected by the things the viewers say in the same way as the viewer would be affected, if the criticism is put back on them.
Saying that another way, it's possible for me to hurt your feelings, but nearly impossible for you to hurt mine.
My higher status means my opinion is more important to you than yours is to me.
Sounds harsh, I know, but that's just the way it is. That's how us humans operate.

      Hi John,
Can't say I disagree with much of that. I think the only time I've been "short" with a vlogger is if they're out to provoke their audience in areas such as current affairs, politics and ideological debate.
With regard to maker content; woodworking, photography, audio, inventions, food etc then I think content creators just deserve everyone's general respect. Of course we all do things differently and have different theories on various matters, but makers put in a lot of effort and I think it's pretty poor form to be insulting to them.
People have off-buttons and alternatives to choose from, so I've never understood the mentality of purposeful conflict.
      Life's far too short

I don't understand the idea that a person who views or comments on a UA-cam video feels they are "per se" inferior to the person making the video. I don't think that is true, especially for audio stuff, which is highly subjective these days.
However, if I am watching a video made by an astrophysicist (for example, on the subject of Dark Matter, or String Theory), I might feel somewhat inferior because, although I enjoy watching those videos, I am not an astrophysicists myself. However, I have watched enough UA-cam videos about astrophysics made by scientists of vastly different and conflicting opinions, that even on those subjects I don't feel at all inferior to the ones who promote theories that have been substantially debunked by the astrophysicists that I respect.
But never have I felt inferior to people who make videos about audio equipment unless talking about someone like Mr Carlson's Lab, or Uncle Doug, who make highly technical videos about how electronics actually works and how to repair stuff, but don't offer any opinions on what sounds good.

Status isn't the same as inferior / superior. Status is your social standing, as in your place on the hierarchy within a system.
In a system like UA-cam, a content creator is above a viewer, but that doesn't mean he is superior or better.

    • @Mark-rw3kw
      @Mark-rw3kw Рік тому

@@IBuildIt I don't think it is social standing in UA-cam. It is power, and specifically the power to delete, or block comments. As Freud said, the fundamental desire of men is to destroy their enemies (in addition to their sexual desires).
UA-cam creators usually (although not always) are making videos to earn money, or to direct people to a business that makes money. That doesn't give them a higher social status than viewers who may not need any extra money. If I go into a store and a clerk making minimum wage decides to kick me out for some reason (or no reason), they have the legal right (and therefore the power) to do that, but that doesn't give them a higher social standing than me.

I am old and that statement saves me a lot of typing to state my position. Mike Tyson summer it up well with, "Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it". Punching people in the face is not a solution either, but the potential of it happening tempers a lot of the disrespect. Self reflection is a dying art.

Or maybe it just means that if someone "minds" just ignore them because there are plenty of others out there that we can sell to that don't mind, so why waste your time? Probably a good rule of thumb for a salesman time allocation (to ignore those who aren't going to buy from you anyway), but maybe not always the best outlook for intelligent discussion of a subject by those not bent of just selling stuff.

You're completely right about the status dynamic, I feel a certain respect for you, I can't say that I'm jealous of your position or wish it for myself, but I respect the effort you put in, so I try my hardest to not be too aggressive or mean in your comments, a lot of other creators do not get the same courtesy from me. You're one of the very few content creators whose every single video I've seen, but are also in a rotation of regularly viewed relaxation content. When I've had a stressful day and it's 9pm and I just got home from work and I'd love to work on any of my own projects but it's far too late to be making that much noise, your videos are a close substitute that I regularly binge watch, particular favorites are the small 3 way towers, the line array and the omni directional speakers, and their various upgrades and iterations.
I too have a great love for miniaturized pro audio systems, my builds include a mini Klipsch La Scala(Faital Pro 6fe200, JBL D220ti, Power Acoustik NB1 w/ custom 3d printed flare, the weakpoint of this system), mini EAW KF750F(2x Faital Pro 3FE22, 1x Power Acoustik Nb1, works well in this system) and a pair of THAM10's (RCF L10-750YK) that sit under the mini La Scalas to create a 3ft tower, my current HiFi/ HT setup. The KF750F minis are my garage/workshop speakers, it's baffling how those little 3" Faital Pros in such a tiny enclosure can project that much mid bass into the room, but I also have an old Pioneer car sub in a bass reflex port tuned to 37Hz, so it's a very full sound, if only in certain areas lol my plan is to build another pair of THAM10's but with different subs this time, the RCF's just don't seem to have the low end performance I want, and the crappy, almost 2 decade old Pioneer does have the performance I'm looking for, but the room dispersion isn't great from the bass reflex box, the tapped horn design is much better at projecting the sound, so I'm thinking if I get a pair of 10" Pioneer car subs and put those in a pair of tapped horns, I should be able to get rid of any dead areas, at least that's what I'm thinking. That should be my next project, but I still have to go source the components, and it's hard to justify it when I have 2 very top tier sounding systems and the "problem" is that my HiFi system doesn't pound in my chest and shake shit off the walls like I want, but it still has very good bass and some sub bass performance, and the other system has great overall performance, if only in 2 places lmao

This video explains to me why in some cases you didn't seem to be very receptive to information being communicated to you. If you view anyone posting in the comments as having lesser status, you're much less inclined to listen to what they're saying and making an attempt to understand what they are explaining to you. And if then you just repeat yourself without listening or understanding what the commenter is saying, it creates a worthless infinite loop, which will be frustrating for everyone.

You are operating on the assumption that the information you are trying to communicate is accurate. I can recall an exchange with you where I could see that was not the case.

@@IBuildIt I was not just referring to my comments, it equally applied to exchanges with other viewers.
Have you ever asked yourself if the same could not be true for you too? That you are "operating on the assumption that the information you are trying to communicate is accurate", and that the information provided by others is not? Could your own admission of 'status' influence this erroneous assumption?
I do not wish to rehash past conversations, as it will likely yield the exact same result. Very few people have open minds, and very few are willing to question their own beliefs; they just assume that 1) they know better than others and 2) that those who do not think the same are just wrong. Very few can question their own beliefs.

    • @literalghost929
      @literalghost929 Рік тому +1

@@Mark-rw3kw Kinda. Yeah I wouldn't assume any sort of malice of or ill will... But if you are convinced that you are correct, and your ego prevents you from listening and understanding what another person is saying, (could be because you assume he's wrong, that you know more than he does, etc.) and are just talking without listening, it cannot result in a positive result. Takes 2 parties to have a discussion. If one party isn't listening, isn't taking the time to understand the other position and is just repeating his opinion, it's a worthless exercise.
Also, from what I recall, in this video John wasn't necessarily saying all viewers think they're inferior, more like creators think they're superior; more knowledgeable.
Like power dynamics of student vs teacher. Teachers typically know more than students, but sometimes teachers could be wrong, but few teachers would be interested to entertain the idea that possibility, especially when challenged by someone with a lesser status (student).
But not just specific to power dynamics. Most people have a big ego, and wouldn't even entertain the idea that they could be wrong. But it gets even worse with power dynamics... In teacher vs student, or creator vs viewer, high status even even less likely to be receptive to the possibility that they could wrong, or that their info isn't accurate, etc. So much easier to fall into that ego trap.

Of course the effect I'm talking about has a range from extreme on one end to very subtle on the other. Like I said, it depends upon how you are wired, as in how your personality has been shaped by genetics and environment.
But by and large, humans recognize status without even considering it consciously and just respond in the way they naturally have.
So feeling closer / more in common / think in the same way can build respect, but it doesn't negate the perceived status difference, even if it's small.

I love these insightful, philosophical videos. The positive comments hold a lot less weight than negative comments. It is unfortunate bc I feel that if you have a positive influence on one person, that means a lot more than 1000 negative comments. The negativity is hardly ever constructive. I like your speaker insight. But this is a world of art. This is a world of bias. This is a gray area. When you interject your opinion, there will be an endless line of people who disagree. When you advertise a speaker design, there’s an endless supply of resistance. When you propose a certain speaker, that is your opinion. Every speaker is application specific. There is no universal speaker to rule them all. It’s just choosing one flavor over another. There is no champion. Your speaker might be excellent but it won’t fit all applications. And the response to that is “you don’t know what you’re talking about.” That aside, the commercial world of speakers that actually generate revenue is beyond worthless. For that reason alone is why you feel like advertising your own speaker. All of it a crapshoot. You fall in love with one and use it as your benchmark. It is what it is. Advertising a speaker is identical to advertising the color of underwear. You would be lucky to sell underwear itself. The color of it much less a factor in the sale bc it’s a shameful topic that gets covered up with clothes anyway.

This video isn't in response to anything in particular, but something I've been meaning to make for a while as a general observation on how things are.
But yes, there's a lot of general disrespect on the go and it has become more commonplace. People are taking what they are getting (for free and very conveniently) for granted.

Hey John….thanks for sharing your position. Not trying to treat you like an idiot of that helps…..but please see my inputs and comments for what they are……and most have been positive of what you’re trying to accomplish…..I wouldn’t watch your channel if there wasn’t some value. That being said, I’ve been embedded in this industry for nearly 40 years….live and recording engineer, line array development, hyper cardioid bass systems, you name it. If I share a thought or premise, it’s not a theory…..I’m trying to help you on your journey. You’re the only Audio tuber I’m subscribed to…..I enjoy watching folks take chances and pushes the envelope…..the rest don’t really interest me….hope this clarifies my position.

Disclaimer: this isn't a hate comment.
Story short, commentators are lower status. Seems a bit pompous.
However status isn't why I leave hate comments. It's mainly because of some uneducated youtuber that didn't go to school taking advantage of the viewers by injecting their ignorant views or ideals.
You are an old man blind to cyber bullying. Which is actually better because its not a positive. It can't be as simple as 'status'.
Celebrities and people in the entertainment industry are lesser people meaning I don't view them as having higher status.
Sitting infront of a camera doesn't mean you automatically have higher status.
Aside from seeking attention, you have the motivation to be behind a camera, I don't.

The YT comment section has dissolved the line between critique and criticism. It doesn't exist anymore. Content creators who believes they are a higher status than the populous because they create YT videos are only fooling themselves. Many content creators feel they are above critique and label anything that resembles it as criticism. On the flip side the comment section has become a brutal clown show. The cons of having a platform like YT are starting to outweigh the pros. Just my opinion.

So you were motivated to finally leave a comment when you decided to take offense to what you think I said in the video. A video where i say from the start isn't about audio directly.
I get that kind of comment fairly often, where the viewer needs to try to punish me for saying or doing something they don't like. Of course the only way they can do that (reasonably) is to say they are not going to watch any more of my videos.
Surely an engineer and PhD would realize that reaction is petulant and childish.
If you stop watching my videos it doesn't punish me - it punishes you.
I gain around 100 new subscribers every week, while I generally lose just 10.
So for every one like you who leaves, there will be (on average) 10 to replace you.
I value every viewer, but don't appreciate guys trying to use their "subscription" to my channel as leverage in an adolescent attempt to change my behavior.
By the way, you don't understand what "status" means. To say that the LEADER of your country doesn't have a higher status proves that conclusively.

A few years ago you were wearing a hat in a few of your videos. You mentioned that someone commented that you look like a loser with that hat and then for a couple seconds you just stared at the camera with a very slight smile. I don't know if it was intentional on your part but you played it so well that I thought it was hilarious.
I almost always give a thumbs up on all the videos I watch, even if I disagree with the content but a couple nights ago I watched one where the guy was talking about the crash test of the Cyber Truck and how wrong people were for criticising it. I agreed with him there but then he started criticising people for buying pickups just to get groceries and to drop their kids off to school. Property ownership is a big thing with me or more precisely telling people what they should and should not own. I was very "rude" to that creator and I'm sure it didn't bother him at all but maybe someone else will see my comment and realize he was being a Marxist with his comments.

I remember that hat video and the smile was intentional, so I'm glad it landed the right way. I think the guy said the hat made me look like an A-hole and thereafter the hat became the A-hole hat and when I wore it it accentuated my natural A-hole qualities.

Wow, commenting on this video is a loaded proposition! For me, status is not immediately conferred by being the maker of the video. It’s their competence and/or skills in the subject matter. For me, problems arise when my knowledge equals or betters the creator’s. If they are competent I can respect differences in approach. If they talk sh!t I’m apt to call them out because I don’t think bad info should go unquestioned Fortunately most people on you tube are far more expert than me in aany given topic so I’m a net learner. And most skills are hard to fake. You can’t post a video on furniture construction or car repair, not know what you are doing, and last long. The big exception to this is hifi audio. There are too many “reviewers” with no skills or credentials or special knowledge who spew nonsense. If I get into comment tussles, it’s with folks of that ilk.

In general, I think the worst thing a UA-cam creator can do to really piss someone off is to delete a comment and/or block someone. This is much worse even than insulting them with a snippy reply to their original comment. But obviously some totally inappropriate comments do need to blocked.

    • @IBuildIt
      @IBuildIt  Рік тому +2

      They can still watch.
And they can also comment, but no one will see their comment other than themselves and they won't know they are blocked (unless they check by signing out). UA-cam is sneaky that way :)

@@IBuildIt When a person's comments are made invisible to others, they will find out eventually, and that makes them even more upset. Can you just make one comment invisible to others, and everyone can still see their other comments? Also, even if you can just make one comment invisible to others without the poster knowing it, I think most people will figure that out. UA-cam viewers are not as stupid as you might suppose. I am just telling you what really gets people upset, since that seems to be the subject of this video. I don't think viewers get upset if someone (or channel owner) strongly rebukes their original comment (or even calls them an idiot), so long as they can respond if necessary. Censorship is a very sensitive topic these days.

Also worth mentioning is that UA-cam has been "censoring" comments over the last few years to actively hide ones that are blatantly antagonistic, disrespectful or use certain keywords.
So your comment may not show, even if I haven't blocked you.
To reveal the hidden comments, click the "sort by" button at the top of the comment section and select "newest" instead of "top comments".
UA-cam also pushes visible comments that it "thinks" are negative down to the bottom of the comment section, while pushing the ones it thinks are positive toward the top.

@@IBuildIt You have not blocked any of may comments that I know of (I think this is the probably the first video of yours that I have made a comment about, but not 100% sure). I don't think that UA-cam itself has ever blocked any of my comments. A few channels have blocked my comments when I pointed out (politely) that there may be a conflict of interest or failure to disclose certain key information. But I was mainly just talking here about the psychology of how UA-cam creators deal with comments, and that IMO getting blocked by a UA-cam creator is far worse than being rebuked or told they are stupid (so long as they can respond). Of course, I am not talking about comments that are abusive or otherwise should clearly be blocked.
