Key Tip To Reduce Low Back Pain, Sciatica, Leg Pain And Neck Pain While Driving

  • Driving means prolonged sitting and often bad posture, incl. slouching. This strains your tissues and causes lower back pain, contraction of the piriformis, buttock pain, compression of the sciatic nerve. Sometimes, it can even lead to a disc hernia!
    There are different reasons why people slouch in the car. But a simple one is this: if your toes point sideways, so does your knee, which will make you slouch. Just reorient your toes and you'll be safe.
    To help you keeping your toes pointing upwards, you will need to adjust your car seat, in part. the seat pan angle. This will help support your thighs, and thereby avoid that they fall sideways.

    Pain in the back, shoulder, arms or any other musculoskeletal pain should not govern your life.
    A lot of the pain you feel is caused or aggravated by wrong posture, poor ergonomics and a lack of specific exercises for your muscles and joints. Giving you the tools to resolve these issues is the reason why I created this self care channel.

    Allo Olivier! I’ve had a Subaru Crosstrek for 1.5 years now and I get bad pain in both knees and sometimes calves as well, after driving for not even 5 minutes…always starts to hurt after my short drive..my car has manual seats, only going up/down & forward/backward..it doesn’t matter what position I’m in, results are always the same..I’ve tried every foam cushion, lumbar support, rear seat jackers to change the angle, nothing helps. I don’t get this with any other car I’ve ever driven, only the Subaru. I am 5’11”, 180lbs physically fit in my mid 40’s. Merci pour prendre de ton temps pour faire ces vidéos!!

    This is game changer. As a forklift operator my food naturally was slipping to the outside and that gave me horrible muscle pain. Just by getting into habit of having it straight with toes poiting up I eliminated all problems! Thank you so much.

    I think I might try using washcloths and towels to support the sides of my legs and my back and change the neck support. Maybe I can see them together when I figure out the right spots. Has anyone done this? I ordered a bunch of different things and they felt awkward and one made my sciatica even worse.
    Also, thanks for the video!! Hope you do more like this.

      The problem is, by the time people are adults their bodies have been 'malformed' into all kinds of crazy ways. So one posture may be 'good', but becaues of all kinds of reasons, may still be painful. This is worth trying, but it depends on the injury. A herniated disk or torn tendon is likely going to hurt until the injury itself has resolved...one way or another. Tendons take a long time to heal, herniated disks they say 3 to 6 months. I'm going to try this but have seriously doubts the horrible pain I get when driving is going to just 'disappear'. Worse, it can make some people think they are worse off simply because it DOESN"T work. Thats not meant to endorse bad posture, the posture tips should be number one, there are other physical therapists that go into even more detail on driving, where such problems seem common.

    bought a BMW G20 recently (right hand drive) and the accelerator pedals are slightly offset to the right. Even driving for 10 mins is causing sore right hip joint (like a pinch when I get out of the car) and right buttock (a soreness when I get out of the car). And if I keep going for longer say 1 hour plus then I end up with pain on right side of lower back by next day. Did try some of these things based on other research, but this video summarises well and serve as a refresher to follow specific steps. Let me try this and see if make any difference. Meanwhile 1) the fact that the soreness is triggering even with 10 mins drive suggest an deeper issue or could it just be the posture? 2) any suggestions on whether lower seat position or higher seat position will give legs the best possible angle to work with offset accelerator pedals. I've been trying both high and low and is trying to figure out which one works better.

    Great advice. As I watched this I thought of all the old cars and trucks that did not have seat angle adjustments (as shown here). How did people long ago deal with the pain driving a vehicle when there was no way to bring the seat up to meet the leg's underside?

    • @OlivierGirard
      @OlivierGirard  Рік тому +1

      I think there are different answers to this:
      - generally speaking, physical pain has been less of a concern in the old days, even at work. Safety first, then physical health, then psychological health
      - less people were driving, and they were often driving less. So the problem wasn't as bad as now...

    Please help me, I beg of you.
    I sit in a low sports car. I have the ability to adjust my seat in any way (low, high, etc). I have been struggling for over a year trying to find a comfortable seating position that does not cause right knee pain. I have tried cushions, sitting high in my car, I went to a chiropractor, a physical therapist, etc, nothing works. Outside of driving, the pain is never present. Right now, I have the front of my horizontal seat cushion all the way down, and the rear of it up to make it less like a bucket seat. What should I do? I do tend to drive with both my legs outwards like in this video. People are telling me that I should sit with my hips at the same level as my knees, but this makes it hard to drive such a low car. Please help.

    • @OlivierGirard

      2 things...
      - check out this video for the seat adjustment of your truck: ua-cam.com/video/VXMZKGAIUnY/v-deo.html
      - if that's not enough, try to get a wedge cushion to correct the seat pan tilt. If it slides, just put some anti-slip fabric underneath to stabilize it ;)

    • @OlivierGirard
      @OlivierGirard  Рік тому

      Never heard about something like that, although it looks promising!! I have experience with rolling a towel on the outer side of my thighs, and I could also imagine a belt to hold the thighs together (but I think the latter would be rather dangerous...). If there's something else, I'm curious to know about it!!

    Hy Olivier, I have a quick question: I am a student and often study in the library as I have difficulties to concentrate at home. In the library I have a wooden chair with adjustable height, and I often suffer from backpain or pain in the arms after a long day of study. What are the things I can do to improve my posture with the given fourniture? What should I be specially careful of?
    Thank you so much, I think many other students will be able to relate :)

    • @OlivierGirard
      @OlivierGirard  3 роки тому

      Hey Zoé! I just sent a mail to a school teacher to help her with disastrous furniture... tough to be a student indeed!!
      I think there are 2 things there, which I detail in this video on working from home: ua-cam.com/video/f_vMwOd97ZQ/v-deo.html
      - get a lumbar cushion (if you're in Switzerland, you can get mine here: www.ergoh-conseil.ch/ergonomics-online-shop.html)
      - soften the surface on which your butt rests all day long... i.e. put a thin cushion under your buttocks.
      Does this make sense?

      I have another video to explain about cushions: ua-cam.com/video/sJLUWTLQwNI/v-deo.html. In this case, I don't think you'll find something which is thin enough, so it will close your hip angle, thereby increase the pressure in the hip joint and make you slouch (again 😂!). In my previous car, I was using a towel that I was rolling on the side of my thigh that was preventing it from moving sideways: try that...

    • @OlivierGirard
      @OlivierGirard  3 роки тому +1

      Basically, the idea is the same: you don't want the toes to point too much outwards. So you put your heels between the 2 pedals and that should be good. And the more you drive on the cruise control, the more you have to beware the laziness in your right knee :)
