They could've said it was a study. Studies are a thing, you copy something to better understand shapes, poses, colours, whatever it is you liked in the original. But there's a lot of mysticism in some areas of the art community: the idea of the muse-inspired artist that kind of gets better and better by their own genius instead of by studying. They have to keep their appearances (and their egos). Thankfully, we can all learn from these experiences and be better people and artists. 😊
to be fair it can be really scary on the internet when being called a 'tracer' not everyone is understanding and accepting of it? people will send literal death threats. Its like rolling the dice for whether or not people will hate you or not. Some people will jump on the word 'tracing' and immediately assume your entire gallery is not yours and you steal art. While I personally would disclose my method and accept whatever comes from it, some people are genuinely scared of losing their job, their income, their home, the food on their table from bad press and being sat next to the word 'tracing' some people want to use a different word like 'referencing' as a cover up since its greatly frowned upon. Some artists don't even like to admit they use references because of the huge negative connection to tracing. Some people think its cheating to use references.
There's nothing wrong with tracing. It helps to understand anatomy, poses, shapes, etc.and general practicing. Whenever I reference specific pictures I give credit to the og artist if I decide to post it somewhere. If it's heavily traced I usually don't post it to social media since it's for personal practice
Pfft. If I did this, I would have made it a whole thing! Like: "I'm taking the art back! If AI can take from us, then I will take from them!" & then make it even better! They would have come off as a renegade & hero. lol Makes yourself FULLY transparent on your activities!
@@BigBadWolframio This! You can study your favourite artists and learn a lot by doing it. Even if we’re talking about grand masters or great artists on the internet. Just don’t say it’s your original idea… post it as a study.
Agreed, the act of tracing is not bad, that is how I started in art, it really does help. Now just looking at an art style especially manga I can imitate it. what’s BAD about it is not disclosing it was traced and relaying on it too much.
I think it's fair to blame them, it's understandable to trace when Ai art looks so good but my god it's so easy to admit it, especially when the skills are clearly there, doubling down made them look like a prick on his high horse.
Artists not being dramatic? Are you kidding me? Artists are the most dramatic people I know, and I say that as one. Because while we're quiet and usually non confrontational, we'll return home and proceed to create the saddest character with the most traumatic background ever: abandoned by their parents and raised by a sweet, kind wolf, who was then brutally murdered by a mad man and Mc lost an eye and 3 toes trying to get revenge, but eventually dies tragically. And if the character happens to resemble the very person who pissed off the artist? Coincidence ofc.
Honestly, after taking art history last year, I’ve learned that artist have kinda just always been dramatic and petty and the like, it’s almost like a tradition seemingly haha 😂
100% agree with your opinion on this. it's so frustrating when i see people post art that is clearly traced off a pinterest photo, without showing the original or even mentioning that it's traced, and then people comment stuff like "omg that pose/composition/idea is so good" and the artist is like "thank you" :))) and they take the credit for something they didn't actually do themselves. you don't have to create everything from scratch without any help but please at least be transparent about it...
I kinda feel for this artist. When I was young and at the point that most people probably learn their artistic skills, I got really into a small community where you'd take the same line art and color/edit and add things to it. So I got really good at color theory, patterns, and editing on a base (copying shading styles etc). Still, to this day, I cannot just draw out a scene or person. But god damn can I color some pre-made art. I can't help but wonder if this person got stuck in a similar cycle, where their color work has outpaced their actual drawing ability and so they ended up tracing others' base work.
then they should've taken the time to level up and learn anatomy and composition on their own before pumping out images on the internet chasing clout with traced art AND even selling it?? 😭or just be clean about it guys this is the reference i traced it, but i did all the coloring myself. like nobody is blaming anyone for being a beginner, just for lying and stealing
holy crap they could at least have admitted to it! AI pictures have no copyright as far as I'm concerned. You're pretty much free to use it but don't lie you didn't trace it!
also the fact that you have actual captions available instead of youtube's silly auto generated ones is a BLESSING. thank you sm. so many commentary youtubers dont take the time to help their HoH audiences like that
4:04 She says it's frowned upon to trace...as an artist of 35 years I would sorely have to disagree. Lots of professional artists trace pictures (for realism) and most of the time their own sketches. Now, we need to let the general audience know a simple fact...drawing or painting your piece in one sitting, straight up with no reference and no mistakes is not a feasible technique. Kim Jung Gi is one of the few that operate like this but it is not common. Most, if not ALL artists, trace. It's a part of the building process: Loose sketch, tighten up the shapes, find placement for a more pleasing composition, etc. There is no inherent shame that comes with tracing in the artist world because all the greats did it. What IS frowned upon is the lying/denial of having to trace. I do both, trace and original art, and both hold equal quality. If someone thinks my tracing is a way of "cheating", I then show them my original art in pencil and that reveals to them that I DO know how to draw. It's not just about "drawing" a piece but more like "creating" a piece using a slow, repetitive process that lets them slowly control and refine the final piece. If the artist is lying about tracing, then it means that they are either insecure of their skill set or they literally have no skill set. In the comic book art world, inkers get crapped on all the time for 'tracing" over someone else's pencils without realizing how much work, technique and knowledge goes into using the proper tools to get that professional look. So basically, not everyone who traces can draw. Digital or not, it still takes a wealth of knowledge (Lighting, shading, color theory, line work, etc.) to even create just a decent mediocre piece. If someone is a "good tracer", there's a likely possibility that person already has the skills. It's the terrible tracers that are easy to spot. Be confident in your creations, no matter what process you use. Let the final piece speak for itself. All in all, I love the video!
she's not talking about tracing your own drawings, inking it. or how you ink manga drawings as work etc.... but tracing over someone else's work and saying that's his own work....
Personally, compared to tracing other's art, using this to help you get a better understanding of drawing is a bit better than just. Passing the AI off as yours.

I think using tracing as a tool can really help when creating artworks. Actually, many traditional artists have been using tracing in their creative process for a long time, going way back to the 15th century with the use of camera obscura. It helps them make their drawings accurate and on point. So, the real deal is not about tracing itself, but what you're tracing and where it comes from. 'Cause it could totally be a copyright issue, especially when it comes to AI-generated art. The whole copyright situation for AI art is still kinda fuzzy, which is why tracing AI-generated art can easily get some serious hate and backlash.
Technically they are in their full right to trace AI art since AI art cannot be copyrighted or owned or whatever. If you do not believe me, search it up. The only parts of an ai art that can be owned art parts that were drawn by an actual person. And since you can’t, well, only in some rare instances, trace the images that make up an ai artwork back to the original artists works that made up the ai artwork (not sure if that made sense). You would never know. So this person who traced the AI, that art is legally theirs actually. They should have said they traced at least though instead of lying. May be a controversial opinion, but personally, I don’t have a problem with this. AI art is ridiculous. It can put real artists out of their job, which is really sad. I personally am an artist. I don’t touch AI art, because I don’t want to support it. I also don’t trace because I don’t want to get accused of it like this person did. That stuff worries me though. But what I mean is that this ai art is getting so advanced you can say stuff like, “a pretty girl in a sitting post in [an artists style]” and it will draw it in that artist’s style. Which means if that artist has commissions, people could just ask ai art and they wouldn’t get as many commissions. Which of course can lower their earnings. That’s just an example though.
I haven't watched the video yet but if they were trying to make a statement about "taking back" AI art wouldn't you think they would've said that they traced it ? Why would they try and pass it off as their own ?? Lets also not ignore the fact that AI art may mesh other unwilling artists art into the product.. what you trace could possibly be someone elses stolen work.. ( Also why would you heavily trace and then try and pass it off as your own?? Heck! Even just tracing without mentioning that you did is a nono...)
I'd even say go for it, trace AI art, BUUUUT be up front about it. When I trace it's obvious cause I'm experimenting and the proportions are suddenly more realistic. However, while I don't think an artist should get flamed for tracing AI art a lot, if they don't improve because of it, it's on them.
I saw another artist "stealing" From ai, but they didnt do this shit-they actually redrew an ai art which i think is okay;but tracing? Thats stooping so low💀and when i meant redrew, they used the ai as a reference:) But this right here is completely insane😭😭BC ITS STILL TRACING SOMEONE ELSE'S ART-AI IS MIXED PEOPLE, ITS A MIX OF ALL OTHER ARTIST'S STYLES😭
One thing I've always wondered about is where is the line drawn between we humans using visual information we've gathered from our perceptions as reference when creating original art, and an AI/diffuser using visual information it's gathered from its perceptions as reference when creating original art? People look at each other's art all the time for reference/inspiration; we are, in essence, using others' art to create our own. Never seen anyone bring it up, but it seems like such an obvious thing. Then again, I don't engage with public forums much, so I may have missed that part of the debate.
It is possible that the AI traced his work, the models are trained on art from all across the web. It’s rare that the lines would be exact but not impossible, especially with a pretty typical “anime” male face.
that's what i thought too. it's a very typical pretty, style 3/4 angle anime semi-realistic face, might be a coincidence... but the video they posted actually reveal they DO trace 😂
Or the AI stole their work that is how AI gets their art style by Stealing From Artists. I hope nothing like this ever happens to me. That’s why I’m so scared to post my work on the Internet. 😂 Also tracing the outline of a model is not going to create that beautiful picture at the end. The person is still a great artist. I’m personally not a tracer but I don’t think that makes their art inferior to people who decide not to trace the outline of a model. What makes the painting is the hours of rendering to takes to make something realistic and stylistic at the same time at least that’s my opinion.
I agree, honestly kinda sad. I think it'd be a funny move to trace AI "artists" images, but in a mocking/trolling way. The idea of someone taking AI art base paintover to turn it into an art career feels like we'd come a full, crusty circle

Just out of curiosity. What would you say if a person created a 3D model, even go as far as sculpting the model, in Blender/Zbrush, setting up a camera shot, taking a render and then bringing that render into Krita/Photoshop in order to trace it and use it for your art/comic/commission/whatever. How would you compare that type of tracing vs tracing photos, especially ones you didn't take? And also without disclosing it.
3d/2d artist. You're still the creator and doing those things takes creativity and your hard earned knowledge. And the added bonus is youre not relying on someone else's artwork as a base to basically just straight out trace
Actually, I agree for the most part about being "chill" but probably moreso outwardly, and how I am probably perceived by other people. But inside, oh man, the mental battles inside, the feelings! They come out in the drawings, right? That's what makes artists so passionate anyway. We seem chill on the outside, but inside, we are so full of drama. Maybe not our own life, but perception and reality. Anyway, I just stumbled on this video today, love the humor, and your commentary. You have so much charisma! Love it!
What's funny is that this person is actually good at the digital coloring process. Aside from lying, I don't really think what they did is wrong. I think AI is best used as a tool for artists if it's going to exist, and it WILL exist and grow. It will compete with us. This is an unavoidable reality. If we're going to exist with it, we're going to have stop stigmatizing it in our creative process. Because at its best, it's going to be incredibly hard to compete with it without using it ourselves. On top of that, I'd much rather have someone with technical and creative skill use AI in their process than have someone without any talent claim art as their own after generating it. This artist likely has the skill to do what they did without tracing, the AI art only sped up the process. If we're stigmatizing them for tracing AI works, then we're kind of getting into the question of "is using a reference bad?" Because they could have done it without AI, and no one really got hurt from them doing this. They were just dishonest about the process, and understandably so, because artists have a hate boner for AI. But the hate is unnecessary here.
I've been trying so hard to figure out how to use AI in my art process, and I think this is probably the only way to go that is the least controversial. Otherwise, we'll be left in the dust-- more than just dust, if artists keep the 'hate boner' raging. Believe me, I take issue with AI art but if it can be used as a tool to compete with the competition itself, then that's what we have to try to do. In fact, this all reminds me of the forever fight between traditional vs digital artists not too long ago. Claiming digital artists weren't artists was always a bit silly to me, even if I could see where they were coming from.
This comment is exactly right. When u work in a studio, nobody cares how u get to the final result, assuming u aren’t committing copyright infringement. It’s hilarious too bc there’s a limited number of very popular compositions for splash art, hero poses, loading screens, for example. Compare League of Legends vs many other games & you’ll see how much repetition there is of general lighting, poses, etc. illustrators likely aren’t tracing each others work, but they may be referencing stock photos that come licensed in adobe or wherever
honestly there is nothing wrong with using the pose and composotion as long as you clearly state that u have used this composotion from the Ai art thingi. And getting mad over like a pose, this only refrers to a pose or something tho and not the whole artwork
I don't agree with the blatant tracing, even if AI artists kind of had it coming with how their technology works. That being said, I think that if we want to "take back" from AI artists, Kooleen's recent video on the subject is the way to go about it (discovering techniques by observing the ridiculous amount of effort the AI puts into the work).
Dont get let down about the art you see in media,ai made or top artist, ilustrators, etc. Drawing is a skill and you never stop learning, focus on what u wanna acomplish and do everything u can to reach that goal(ethically of course) I draw as a hobby for several years on and off and watching my old drawings i almost vomit seeing how bad they are but when i compare them with what i do now i feel i progressed a lot , i much prefer to not get let down bc of my lack of skill and focus on building that skill even if it take me years to reach my goal, dont take the fun out of it even if u want to become pro and do this for a living.
I do tracing with my own art, just because my only way to make digital art is on my phone with Ibis Paint X (I'm going to save up money to buy a good tablet to make it easier) and I CANNOT make good art (at my level) 100% on my phone (the screen is so small that's why it comes out completely crooked 😭😭😭), so I draw the draft or a good part of the drawing on paper, take a photo and transfer it to digital. This is one of the few cases where I find tracing acceptable, besides tracing used ONLY for study.
I think there need to be a strong definition between different kinds of tracing. Tracing your own photos, 3d models, or royalty-free photos or photos from reference packs that you BOUGHT is perfectly fine, shouldn't be frowned upon (and actually isn't frowned upon by most professionals) and you own NO ONE any disclosure of your artistic techniques unless you don't violate anyone else's intellectual property. You can sell work that is done that way. It's fine. Tracing other people's art for any other reason other than studying is wrong. Tracing photo references for the key points of the POSE is also fine because there's no copyright for the pose, but you can't trace and directly copy all of it. Tracing objects such as cars, houses, gadget etc to incorporate them into your drawing is perfectly fine. We need to distinguish malicious tracing from a completely valid work pipeline that IS used by professionals to speed things up, because in fact, needing to fight the algorithms is not a funny joke. It's reality. And you might know the anatomy, and perspective and all the stuff, but quickly setting up a 3d model and tracing over it, when you've got tons of projects to make and make a living of your art is ok. It shouldn't be even a question if it's a bad thing or not. But tracing over AI art basically means you trace over a stolen generated image that was made without the consent of all the artists who's work was fed to the AI. That's why it's so bad.
I think it's perfectly valid to take the ai images and show how we as artists can still improve it in ways that a computer would never think to but u gotta be honest abt it yk
Cool they stole it or traced over it. Why? Because AI art , under US copyright laws isn't owned by anyone. And if they did it, they can say it's their work. And if they used it as reference, cool still. We all do it when drawing.
IDKWTF the algorithm brought me here, but this is hilarious and I like it. IDK why he wouldn't say so. It's not copyrighted. It saves time. Lots of people trace when there's a short deadline.
I personally get discouraged by AI gen image not because it looks good, since it HAS been programmed and trained to make it look super good, but because it gets a lot of attention than small genuine artists.
Funny, when I finally got my ass and got into an art school instead of self-learning, surprise surprise the first thing the teacher taught us was to ....TRACE! Yes we were all shocked and it took multiple scolding until we got into the habit of finding / taking good references to trace from. So Yup, I'm always confused on whether its pragmatic or shamful to trace. I feel for the poor artist, Yes some of them art shown are almost step by step with change in character/color scheme. But Let's be honest here, if someone didn't intentionally want to make his life hard on purpose no one would have batted an eye at the similarities even when they are there next to each other. It's public speech here at work and not a fault of the artist for drawing / copying / referencing / tracing an art, especially an AI one! You are right, it IS a PR incident like AI art is already copywrite nightmare, and no Real Human Artists are getting neither their due credit from AI, nor being harmed when someone traces or even 'steals' from an AI generated art. otherwise people and artist, refer back to original to avoid being with hunted with pitch forks like this poor dude let THAT be the lesson learned

some people want to use a different word like 'referencing' as a cover up since its greatly frowned upon.
What sort of tragic story is this? Is this from somewhere?😂😅

How do u colour something u can't draw lol
I mean there are some people who's jobs are to add color (like in comics and stuff)
@Tanikundraws why do you think coloring books exist? coloring and drawing are two completely independent skill sets
They should’ve used a free-to-use base or commissioned an artist for a sketch/lineart only
holy crap they could at least have admitted to it! AI pictures have no copyright as far as I'm concerned. You're pretty much free to use it but don't lie you didn't trace it!

If you trace YOUR OWN work then fine do whatever. But tracing SOMEONE’S work and claiming you did it all is where it’s bad. Simple difference.
Personally, compared to tracing other's art, using this to help you get a better understanding of drawing is a bit better than just. Passing the AI off as yours.
Right? Lots of people take their own photo references and then trace it. It’s a huge time-saver. This is obviously drama where there is none.
@@anonymouse257 if u use photo references u took yourself then ofc it's ok! I like it when people are shatting on AI, but if you're just gonna trace it you wouldn't grow as an artist. It's like stealing a plant from a forest and convince people that you grew it
Good argument. However... Tracing does have benefits. You could kinda memorize a body part by tracing and that'll fuel your creativity enough for you to be able to make your own... Unless if the person just wants to trace.
genuine question, why do you care whether other people grow as artists or not? like who cares
@@Vickynger it's not that I care about other's progress in this, but if tracing the only thing you're good at, it's just sad, cause some people work hard just to be better at art, and these are just lazy

Not to mention it might have been them who generated the AI in the first place, at which point it’s their reference, so who cares if they traced?

I think using tracing as a tool can really help when creating artworks. Actually, many traditional artists have been using tracing in their creative process for a long time, going way back to the 15th century with the use of camera obscura. It helps them make their drawings accurate and on point. So, the real deal is not about tracing itself, but what you're tracing and where it comes from. 'Cause it could totally be a copyright issue, especially when it comes to AI-generated art. The whole copyright situation for AI art is still kinda fuzzy, which is why tracing AI-generated art can easily get some serious hate and backlash.
Her personality just adds more spiciness to it all. ✨

You’re now over 85k Little Blind Moles. Legendary 🙌

My god...your accent is just chef's kiss, and your humor combined with that too...

I saw another artist "stealing" From ai, but they didnt do this shit-they actually redrew an ai art which i think is okay;but tracing? Thats stooping so low💀and when i meant redrew, they used the ai as a reference:)
But this right here is completely insane😭😭BC ITS STILL TRACING SOMEONE ELSE'S ART-AI IS MIXED PEOPLE, ITS A MIX OF ALL OTHER ARTIST'S STYLES😭
The ai arts we all see, there are artists who actually have these styles, but stolen:(
One thing I've always wondered about is where is the line drawn between we humans using visual information we've gathered from our perceptions as reference when creating original art, and an AI/diffuser using visual information it's gathered from its perceptions as reference when creating original art? People look at each other's art all the time for reference/inspiration; we are, in essence, using others' art to create our own. Never seen anyone bring it up, but it seems like such an obvious thing. Then again, I don't engage with public forums much, so I may have missed that part of the debate.
"There's not so much drama in the art community we're kind of a chill bunch"
Ive always struggled to see the difference between tracing with modern tools like procreate and simply using a model
I just found your channel and watched your two most recent videos and OMG I LOVE UR PFP SO MUCH LOL it's so cute
your lipstick looks so good, girl
You can't copyright a style, however.
@@DonVigaDeFierrono but using the name is impersonation and can be identity theft in some regions. Also using copyrighted works without permission is illegal in a lot of places
@@DonVigaDeFierro you can't copyright a style, but you can copyright an individual artwork. if AI is using that artwork to create other "art" work, it's intellectual property being stolen. just need the laws to catch up to society

Love it!
Here for the topic, stayed for the accent.
But the hate is unnecessary here.
absolutely underrated comment
I've been trying so hard to figure out how to use AI in my art process, and I think this is probably the only way to go that is the least controversial. Otherwise, we'll be left in the dust-- more than just dust, if artists keep the 'hate boner' raging. Believe me, I take issue with AI art but if it can be used as a tool to compete with the competition itself, then that's what we have to try to do.
In fact, this all reminds me of the forever fight between traditional vs digital artists not too long ago. Claiming digital artists weren't artists was always a bit silly to me, even if I could see where they were coming from.
W comment right here
This comment is exactly right.

Truth
Just came across her channel through shorts and saw a comment to watch this video
"hey you traced my AI art. Give me credit for the no work I put in. I spend minutes on that piece"
Dont get let down about the art you see in media,ai made or top artist, ilustrators, etc.
Drawing is a skill and you never stop learning, focus on what u wanna acomplish and do everything u can to reach that goal(ethically of course)
I draw as a hobby for several years on and off and watching my old drawings i almost vomit seeing how bad they are but when i compare them with what i do now i feel i progressed a lot , i much prefer to not get let down bc of my lack of skill and focus on building that skill even if it take me years to reach my goal, dont take the fun out of it even if u want to become pro and do this for a living.
So the way I trace is I form the shapes in the references and it’s really easy to learn like that. This tracing is telling it’s theirs.
There are a lot of popular artists that trace. When you see their process of the sketch it’s beyond obvious.
THANK YOU. You really hit the nail on the head about AI art and what it means for artists.
Brooo no way I’ve been following that person on insta for a while and they were one of my favs
Hey I just joined today and I love your content so far you explain things perfectly and it’s so easy to listen to you
IDKWTF the algorithm brought me here, but this is hilarious and I like it. IDK why he wouldn't say so. It's not copyrighted. It saves time. Lots of people trace when there's a short deadline.
7:08 i'm an artasta, this is arta 😂
I personally get discouraged by AI gen image not because it looks good, since it HAS been programmed and trained to make it look super good, but because it gets a lot of attention than small genuine artists.
small genuine artist's art is tumblr-tier and looks like shit
You are right, it IS a PR incident
like AI art is already copywrite nightmare, and no Real Human Artists are getting neither their due credit from AI, nor being harmed when someone traces or even 'steals' from an AI generated art.
otherwise people and artist, refer back to original to avoid being with hunted with pitch forks like this poor dude
