  • ABI Rehabilitation is the place people come to recover from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). In episode two Terry starts to emerge from his fog of confusion, Eltje comes to terms with what’s happened to her, and after six months of rehabilitation Tekaha prepares to re-enter the world a changed man. The journey is a challenge as much for their families as the sufferers themselves, as they get to know a person who may be different to the one they knew pre-injury.

He drinks, smokes weed, all day, doesn't sleep, the Trust, TBI unit, where he lives is kicking him out in 2 weeks, & im fearful of what will happen for us... i can't find help anywhere & with no where to live ... & the agency abuse we & esp Tekaha has endured I feel so concerned for his future

In the 70's, my 3 uncles and grandfather were hit by a drunk driver. One of my uncles was killed, the other was in a coma for 3 months. My grandparents never gave up on him and worked hard to teach him life skills again. Now he's stable, is married and has a job, but only has 5% of his brain left. This series hits me hard because I never had to experience what my family did after the accident. This is such an eye-opener and I want to thank not only the production staff, but especially the survivors for sharing this.

I can no longer drive or practice my profession as a nurse, but my beloved husband has stayed with me these last 8 years. Through my seizures, my fugue states and labile emotional states. My husband is an angel, "through sickness and in health " he took it seriously. My love. ❤

It’s really wonderful to see people getting the intensive PT/OT and rehabilitation they need for TBI recovery. In the US, insurance companies dictate how long a patient can receive rehab services, and they allow only the minimal stays for the most part. Same for people with SCI; a paraplegic may get only 6 weeks total to learn how to function in a drastically altered body. It’s not right, and patients and their families suffer for it.

    • @sarcasticallyrearranged
      @sarcasticallyrearranged 2 роки тому

Yes, so many people are against single payer insurance, because they don’t want anyone deciding who lives or dies when it’s already happening thanks to the for profit insurance companies.
No one should be unsupported after major injuries.

I was assaulted by a patient at work, it was in 2012, I will never be the same. I can no longer drive, I can no longer practice my profession. I lose my memory some days. I have been hospitalized with "fugue states" 3 times for weeks post brain trauma . Where, suddenly, I became kind of comatose for a week and took 2-3 weeks to sort of recover and fully recognize my husband and family and friends. I will never be who I was. My injury is left temporal lobe, language and memory.

I'm watching TK and how he's so happy he made it out of ABI like he has absolutely no idea! I suffered TBI in 2012 when I was 24. I'm 34 now and have been "back in society" for almost 10 years after an 8 month rehabilitation in the rehabilitation centre. I know that TK will miss ABI because the moment you're released from clinical rehabilitation, that's when the actual rehabilitation starts and there have been so many times I longed back to living in the clinic. There is hardly any help from the national care system, no matter how hard you beg for it, no matter how you show them your TBI/hospital/rehabilitation documents. They all stay back and nobody wants to take you as a patient because if things go wrong (and chances are statistically pretty high that they will) no organisation wants to be held accountable for that and you're just left on your own.

What a shit thing to go through and for his family to see him tossing and turning and muttering but WOW what a blessing to see him start coming right. I'm an optometrist and brain injury rehab is one of my specialties. For anyone with a family member going through this or someone who has gone through this themselves and looking for validation, I recommend reading Ghost in My Brain. It's written by a neuroscientist documenting his own journey with brain injury. When my mom fell off a ladder and I recognized she had more than a "mild comcussion," I sent her the book and she felt that it helped my dad really understand what was going on and even helped her feel less frustrated with things like needing more sleep or more frequent breaks and resting throughout the day. ❤

I think he sings beautifully. As long as we believe in ourselves then everything else just falls into place. That precious laugh gets me everytime. It's wonderful that he appreciated you being there for him and recognized that you sacrificed your life just for him. Of course we know as great moms that there is no other place for us to be but right beside our sons. I pray you both are doing well and life is settling to some degree of normalcy for you two. Is there really such a thing as a normal life? Probably not. At least not for me and my boys. My son turned 42 today. I have been helping him raise his 17 year old son whose mom died when he was 10. So i have my own little warrior also. God Bless.

Get your life and independence back you can do anything once you;get set your mind to it! You have given hope to so many people and hope is the best thing you can have at any low point in your life.

So true. U feel like putting a sign on you telling people what is wrong and what happened to you..I have problems with short term memory and it's been 14 years. It won't get better. I forget so much my family is always saying u just said that. Well I'm sorry I can't remember. So then your mad at yourself after this long and they still have to tell me that. It's hard as hell.

These are horrible to watch and I send my prayers to all. However, these are fairly extreme cases. Most, of which I am one, suffer in silence with out obvious signs of injury. I do feel blessed and my recovery, as much as it can be, is something I can live with. Most simply never recover fully and have daily challenges such as fatigue and cognitive issues. It truly sucks to have a serious TBI.....but these videos remind that it could have been a lot worse.....prayers to all.

At least these families don't have the worry of paying for the rehab for their loved one unlike here in the USA. Something like this will bankrupt you here. Insurance only covers so much for a certain time and that's it so you are on your own after that.

This video is inspiring and hopeful, but at the same time scary how a person's life can change from an accident. Once knew a woman, a beautiful fit athletic health nut. She was in a car accident and she became a whole different person -- heavier, short hair, and looked 15 years older. Regardless of the physical changes, she was able to live in a supported independent living situation. Her life was different but she recovered way more than doctors expected her to progress.

Every *15* minutes?? Oh my gosh! 5:14 You know, I would think having padding down and not empty bed with wood and metal, nor wood railing or glass windows to possibly fall into would be best for someone learning to balance and walk again.

I've not had half the Disabilities as the people you show here.
I've had six small concussions over my 71 years starting with a fall off a brick wall landing on my back breaking the brick with my cocex.I passed out I was 13 so I'm not quite sure what happened time wise. I woke up at a Chiropractic type place in Mexico. Two car accidents, two slip and falls. In my twenties I was beaten up when I told my ex that I was moving. He punched me in my forehead which knocked me out. He kicked me up and down my spine with steel toe work boots. I was out two days. I was never taken to a Dr or Hospital. I've mentioned over the years my concussion

Tekaha doesn't need to drink with his friends because having Brain Damage is IDENTICAL TO BEING DRUNK 24 hours a day!!!!!! I have days when I could not pass a field sobriety test- I'm in a fog and unsteady on my feet due to TBI. I can't drive on those days. Other days I can't drive because I'm vomiting with migraines. Migraines are identical to the worse hangover I've ever had and I get them 2-3 times per month. After a 3 day vomiting episode feeling like an axe is buried in my face, I'm a ZOMBIE. I think, act, and walk like I've had a six pack or more of beer. Over time, I "sober up" and there are days, two weeks sometimes where I appear perfectly normal and balanced. Then it starts all over again. That's how it's been for 12 years. However, my cognition HAS IMPROVED OVER THOSE 12 YEARS! EVERY YEAR I GAIN MORE COGNITION and get back to my old self. Do not give up!!!! The physical symptoms are there but my cognition has improved with cannabis the last four years.
