My guess is that the noise from the Turbo boost button is just an audio cue so you know you are using it. (so you know you are using it vs the slower one and so you know how long you are on it, filling your storage up...) And probably has a setting to turn it off so when you are shooting hummingbirds you don't scare them off...
I drive a BMW I3 with range extender which works exactly like the ram truck. I actually love it, because 90% of my driving is all electric, but when I need the extra range, I can use the range extender which is a gas generator. But when I turn it on, there’s absolutely zero difference in how it drives.
Not to grill the team on car stuff right after Marques got schooled on the GTR: The new Ramcharger is a "series hybrid", similar to the BMW i3 REX because the Gas engine is not mechanically coupled to the wheels. Similar to Hydrogen fuel cell cars, just the power comes from a gas engine instead. Despite what a lot of press at the time said, the Chevy volt (both gen 1 and 2, both of which i had) *could* mechanically send engine power to the wheels depending on what clutches were closed in the gearset. The Volt *could* operate in a series mode, where the Engine and one motor would act as a generator while the other drove the car. Love the car talk!
Does that audio sound a bit off today? Almost like a mix of too aggressive denoising / using a vocal doubler, especially on Marques voice. (Edit - If you EQ the audio in post, does it have a linear phase EQ mode? Otherwise you might be getting some strange phase cancelation issues especially in the low/mid - mid range.)
Good to have Marques back. Hope you could get through to Tim about finally adding face ID on the next macbooks. But, I don't see them adding it until at least 2025
YT made the skip button smaller by rounding the corners and lessening the pad between the word Skip and the edge of the button. Compared to their previous rectangular button.
27:04 Nerd moment, here: "Rolling Shutter" is actually a TYPE of shutter, just like "global shutter" is. So, whereas the A9iii has a "global" shutter, something like the A1 (or pretty much everything else) has a "rolling" shutter. The term "rolling shutter", as it's used colloquially, has kind of become shorthand for the jello-ing or distorting EFFECT, even though the term actually refers to the kind of shutter it is. I'll show myself out, lol.
Except it turns out petrol [gasoline] and diesel have a limited shelf life. So the world of Mad Max, folk would be actually fighting over wind turbines and solar panels, not cans of rancid fuel. Far easier to generate electricity than it is to refine crude oil [if you even have a well to hand] to make it useable in vehicles. Many folk can already do the latter with solar panels on their roofs.
17:25 Marques isn't going to forget the GT-R 😂 53:00 The "Forgotify" idea is really good because it gives people the chance to prove their popularity. On the other hand, those videos didn't get any views for a reason, so...
I think the sound from the a9 iii is piped in from the speakers. It’s most likely done for skeuomorphic reasons and auditory cues of actuation. The Nikon z9 also doesn’t have a shutter and has the sounds piped in through the speakers. Internally Nikon once replaced the shutter sound with a cat meow.
As a photographer... After literally DECADES of complaining about it with modern digital cameras. Now I TOTALLY get these guys are into video, so all their examples were video and motion related. But from a photography stand point it is a great innovation. The main problem for me is shooting high shutter speeds during bright sunlight with a flash setup. Usually you would have to resort to high speed sync setups and transmitters with that capability. But with this new global shutter setup now all that annoying stuff goes out the window. That means better power for the flash units since they don't have to strobe for the high shutter. And not only that.. You don't have to be locked down to brands anymore that can "play nice" with the camera to do that sort of high speed sync stuff. I don't usually get excited about camera stuff since it really has not changed much (to me personally) for a while. But this was super exciting to hear.
I owned a pick up truck for about 3 years. I never towed but I routinely had a bunch of stuff in the bed of the truck. What exactly does "towing" consist of? I never had to pull another vehicle or trailer but I often had heavy stuff in the bed of the truck. This kinda gives the impress that if you are not towing then you are not using the truck to its potential or something. Idk how to word it but I think you get it. The question should be how often do you use the bed of th truck. The answers and replies to that would answer the question as to why do many use them as daily drivers.
The weird thing about the Ram 1500 PHEV is that the gas generator is *way too huge*. A 3.6L V6 is a really large engine to try to fit in next to an electric drivetrain.
Regarding the Ram 1500 EV, BMW made a similar car (not a truck), the i3 REx, starting back in 2014. Similar concept, just for a different consumer. Runs on an electric drivetrain, but you can turn on the range extender to get 70-100 more miles of range. The REx is a BMW motorcycle engine which acts as the "generator" to put electricity into the battery, which then goes to the electric motors.
The "all-electric drive-train with gas generator" design in question is a "series drivetrain", and has already appeared in the BMW i3 (range extender edition) and Mazda MX-30, among others. This approach eliminates the problematic complexity of traditional hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains, and allows for cheaper vehicles with smaller batteries that reflect how people actually use their cars 99% of the time, while also covering exceptions, emergencies and road trips.
Was looking for this comment. I immediately thought of the BMW i3 with range extender when they were talking about the RAM. It’s interesting that the i3 with range extender has been out for almost 10 years now. The other benefit with using smaller batteries is that they should hopefully be cheaper to replace if they fail.
Having the gas fuel backup definitely helps the anxiety of waiting for a charge on the trips as well. You're able to utilize the existing fuel network. I think it's a great step towards converting to electric.
The gas engine can also be more efficient, as they can run it at the optimal RPM and charge over time rather than spiking the rpm every time you accelerate. I think it is a good truck solution, but for cars, personally, I’d prefer a low range ev only car. I don’t want to drag around an ICE boat anchor, or any expensive battery time bomb on my daily commute. I can charge at home and work, and even now I frequently rent for road trips.
Marques, I'd much rather tune in to hear you apologize for a fact about a car than something unbecoming of you, the Studio, or anything else. Your channels are the best tech and related culture content on UA-cam by a mile. Keep on keeping on.
The new Sony A9 III doesn't have a physical shutter curtain anymore (Like Nikon's Z8 & Z9). The sound you are hearing is just for audible feedback. Hockey and Golf games are good examples for this camera because back then if you only use electronic shutter with the traditional sensor, the golf clubs or hockey sticks when shot during action, it will show like it's bent or bowing. Global shutter has drawbacks too. Dynamic range suffers usually.
I'd love to try shooting hockey with this. Maybe they had this in another announcement video, but the shot I wanted to see was someone winding up for a big slapper. I feel like with sticks and clubs it is sometimes harder to notice the rolling shutter because they DO actually bend a lot. I noticed some weirdness with sticks from my Canon R6 before, and I believe that body performs relatively poorly in this area compared to others.
on the RAM truck, Fisker Karma and BMW i3 used this setup. Those were initially done to make a car for EV incentives, but with a lower cost(less lithium = cheaper). I suspect RAM is doing this because car batteries are huge and expensive. They don't have as many resources as GM and Ford and were very late to start developing electric vehicles. Smaller battery for this RAM is way cheaper to produce and they still get to call it an EV
29:24 It's also doing the 120fps in RAW, and at 24mp. Most cameras doing 120fps video are doing it in 4K (way smaller than 24mp), and also in jpeg frame-by-frame. So it's not exactly a 1:1.
31:04 last comment, I swear: it's also almost certainly an artificial shutter sound. The Nikon Z8 and Z9 also only have e-shutters, and you can turn the sound on or off (depending on whether you want to shoot silent). The shutter noise is sometimes nice to have when you're shooting really fast just as an indicator that you've started shooting, how long you've been shooting, and when your shooting stops.
Hey, double-checking: if I use the new fast-forward feature over your ad breaks, will you still get paid? I want to make sure I'm supporting you guys the best I can, so if not, I'll continue to sit through them. But if I can, I'd like to fast-forward.
For the spotify thing, I think 15 hours is alright. On top of the public library, you have podcasts available, and music if you want. For podcasts in particular, I develop a GIANT backlog since I generally listen intently to a single audiobook. And being able to pay for an extra 10 hours really is the smartest part here, since if you absolutely have to finish it, just pay the however much to get a little more time!
I get served videos with less than 100 views pretty regularly, and I don't think it's a coincidence because I click them often. I find it intriguing to watch content from small channels, and the algorithm seems to recognize that.
RAM is part of Stelantis group witch owns many European brands. The technology that you were talking about I believe was developed in order that European cars could get a ecological badge according to some environmental laws that limit access in some cities to vehicles that emit certain quantities of CO2. I believe this first appeared on Renault and Citroen cars.
The a9iii does not have a mechanical shutter. The sound is just audio playing through the cameras speakers - similar to shooting in an electronic shutter mode on other cameras.
WTF David! How could you be OOF for the A9iii episode? While Marques and Andrew know this is a significant camera, they aren’t fully aware of HOW significant this camera is. IMO, this is THE most significant stills camera made to date. Please make David revisit this next week. I’ve been a working professional for 30 years and this camera is truly rewriting the rules of what can be accomplished with a stills camera. I’ve been shooting Canon and Mamiya since 1993, so no fanboying here. Can’t wait to hear what he has to say.
I can tell a difference between 60hz and 120hz settings on iPhone but I have to intentionally try to scroll fast to see it. For my normal day to day use just scrolling like I normally do, at a speed where I can actually read and navigate the screen, the difference between 60hz and 120hz is not noticeable. Right now I have 4 iPhones and I’m carrying a 2020 SE just because I like it.
8:08 I bought an almost new M1 Max MacBook Pro 16" with 32 GPU Cores, 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD in July for roughly under € 2600. It had 2 battery cycles. Looking at the euro prices of M2 and M3 I'm still happy with the decision.
To me the point of a truck is in having a bed to haul stuff in, not particularly in towing. I can put a receiver hitch on anything with enough power and tow stuff around. I can tow stuff with my Jeep all day long but it’s easier just to be able to throw lumber or mulch or anything else I want on the back of the truck and not have to pull a trailer through traffic.
Honestly, I think the okay something feature might stick around because sometimes, I spend time searching for something to watch after I've already watched the videos from my favorite creators. So for me if it can start paying a video that I either forgot about on my watch later list or a video I meant to watch for a video similar to it. It can be really useful.
I LOVED that piano black iPhone 7. The only iPhone I used without a case as it was a super scratch magnet and so I embraced it open arms (hands)! Still own it as I like looking at it now and then 😂

This is actually an ideal vehicle for towing because I've been doing my research and if you want to tow a fifth wheel with the top of the line F-150 electric at 320 mi range with the towing of 7000 lb 90 mi 90, mi. So this hybrid RAM is pretty ideal
I can't remember what it was called but I definitely remember about 10 years ago there was a site you could go to that would direct you to random UA-cam videos that had zero views. Not sure if it's still around but I remember one of my friends in college showing it to me lol
I know this is supposed to be MKBHD podcast, but I am used to David's anlaysis. His input is always a little bit more nerdy when it comes to tech. He is a little bit more insightful. I missed David more today than Marques in the last episode.
@17:58 - Rarely vs never are two very different questions to me. Also "rarely" needs to be defined. If you do it 5 times a year for vacation trips is that rarely? You still are looking for something that tows if you know you want to be able to two something a handful of times a year.

Appreciate asking, and yea you can skip whatever parts you'd like and we'll be fine 😁
49:20 exactlyyy sometimes I’ll specifically filter to shorts cause sometimes a 2:50min video with 30sec ad just makes less than a short
Surprised you guys didn’t discuss OpenAI’s DevDay announcements. Pretty big AI updates!
I loved the thank you at the end
Let the show begins!
I mean I don't have even an M1 MacBook, but it cuts deep when sir Marques is generations back on MacBooks, cuts deep.
Andrew's look of pure enlightenment as he visualized the Taco Bell menu was amazing at the end hahaha
It’s Friday! You guessed it guys! So happy it’s the weekend for the UK
Appreciate the CyanogenMod nod 😂. That’s memories right there.
Love the “Whoops” by marques in the back
Andrew: "Hey David, have a safe flight back." 😇
Also Andrew: "Get f***ed, David!" 😈🙃
lol so chaotic, I love it.
Thanks for sharing it. ✌️
Price of used/refurbished M1 macbook just went UP! 😅 thanks guys
Moto 360 video was my first MKBHD video I ever watched. Been subscribed ever since.
The RAM CHARGER is pretty much a BMW I3 (long-range extender motor) on a larger scale
Was thinking the same thing. The i3 is underrated in my opinion.
The a9iii does not have a mechanical shutter. The sound is just audio playing through the cameras speakers - similar to shooting in an electronic shutter mode on other cameras.
Towards the end y’all said David’s name too many times and my brain did that thing where it was like “is David even a real name?”
🤣
Will you guys ever mention the animation made of you guys from the creator Flashgitz? It's hilarious.
Evening! The Ram truck is a good idea. But it was a good idea when James May built his own EV on Top Gear with this technology, 20 years ago...
Wow, I am feeling so thanked.
My library didn't need to go in person to get a card. Getting a card for ebooks has been a game changer for me
Best pick me up on a friday is a waveform episode.
How did you find one so lightly used?
The Ram is like last year's Nissan X Trail/Rogue 13:26
I LOVED that piano black iPhone 7. The only iPhone I used without a case as it was a super scratch magnet and so I embraced it open arms (hands)!
Still own it as I like looking at it now and then 😂
YT pissing me off cuz why this vid not showing up in my Subscribed tab!?! 😤
Had to go hunting for it cuz I know damn well it's Friday and I want my vid!
This is actually an ideal vehicle for towing because I've been doing my research and if you want to tow a fifth wheel with the top of the line F-150 electric at 320 mi range with the towing of 7000 lb 90 mi 90, mi. So this hybrid RAM is pretty ideal
Yes! Ellis with the 32 bit gang!! My hero.
Just woke up naturally after 5 hours of sleep. Think it was my body alarming me of a new WVFRM podcast
If you got a commute, it's the best way to listen to a book
I can't remember what it was called but I definitely remember about 10 years ago there was a site you could go to that would direct you to random UA-cam videos that had zero views. Not sure if it's still around but I remember one of my friends in college showing it to me lol
The best line of the pod: "It's a bird's fault"
Hearing the Eagle McMahon reference shocked me. Shout out Boulder disc golf
I know this is supposed to be MKBHD podcast, but I am used to David's anlaysis. His input is always a little bit more nerdy when it comes to tech. He is a little bit more insightful. I missed David more today than Marques in the last episode.
As a Chevy Volt owner, I explain the "hybrid" setup as "an electric car with a gas generator included"
@17:58 - Rarely vs never are two very different questions to me. Also "rarely" needs to be defined. If you do it 5 times a year for vacation trips is that rarely? You still are looking for something that tows if you know you want to be able to two something a handful of times a year.
You can definitely find decent deals on M1 Max machines from places like B&H for $1500-2K in savings. It's not a bad option at all
Ellis, I actually did want to hear about 32 bit float point recording…… 😂
It has nothing to do with the podcast, but is there going to be a video from when marques played golf with GM Golf?
Thank You! @the nissan correction in the beginning 🫡
Global shutter isn't about computing power, it's about bandwidth. More wires, essentially.
