I've always found your videos extremely helpful for drafting new sets. You have a very natural way of explaining things, and I am super happy to see you doing a beginner friendly video. Thank you for your consistently great content!
Thanks! I’ve been following your videos for a while now, and my drafting has improved a lot since. I can consistently get 3 victories in arena (which for me is already worth the coins), but I’ve been able to get back to back 5 and 6 victories in Bloomburrow drafts. I hope I can get 7 soon
Thanks for the tips! I've played some quick drafts before but I got destroyed so I didn't try the event for a while. Decided to try it again recently and I found your previous videos about BLB draft. I managed to get 5-3 in quick draft and 4-3 in my first premier draft in MTGA a few days ago.
If you’re new and your looking at a pack and don’t know how to pick, as a new player use two short hands- 1 does it affect the board the turn I play it, and 2 how many rectangles does it make. If something is a creature and it makes a treasure or a food- try to rank that over a creature with no abilities
Thank you for the nice video. Final tip 2, having a plan, it goes against the idea that we need to keep an open mind, right? Probably the plan has to follow what is open first.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! There's not actually any tension between those ideas because keeping an open mind applies to the start of the draft and having a plan applies to the draft once you've settled into your colors and to the deckbuilding portion. Having a plan in this context does not mean going into the draft with a certain deck in mind, rather it means that once you have figured out the open colors, you take cards that work well together. So I start out flexible, but for example, if I end up drafting an aggressive deck, I won't really want to pick a creature that can't attack, even if it is a solid card in a vacuum. Hopefully that clarifies things!
I really like this video! As I am starting to explore drafting more, these tips will help. I do have a question. At what point in the draft should I be looking for signals? Would it be after I leave my first 5 picks open or around the second pack? Thank you! #newdrafter
Signals are happening constantly. Every pack you get passed has information in it that you can use to help glean what the people passing to you are playing. While you’re staying open you want to be reading signals to help figure out what colors and strategy you should commit to. I hope that clarifies things and I’m so glad you liked the video!
Going to my first draft this weekend! Thanks for the tips! (I took notes) btw, can drafters have a notebook to roughly track trends from the packs they receive, or what they picked for desk-building stats purposes?
You’re not allowed to write things down during the draft portion, but you’re allowed to keep notes during the games. Players often track life totals with a pen and paper and things like what cards are in their opponents hand if it gets revealed with a discard spell or something like that. I’m glad you enjoyed my video and found it helpful!
Correct if I heard wrong but your suggesting not to pick a card till on the five pass. What if I dont get any cards to left to choose. Thank you for the content that you make.
I was suggesting not locking into your colors until after pick 5. When you’re first starting out that will help you stay flexible and teach you how to read some signals without being too overwhelming. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying my videos!
How are you supposed to know what colors the player next to you chose from their pack? I get that you can maybe take a guess at what they are not playing, but this seems like a much more advanced level strategy, than a beginner one.
This video sounds like it was made with the idea your drafting in person at a Friday night Magic sort of deal. So you will be in person, probably at the same table. So you can get peaks in here and there. On Arena you don't have that ability your grabbing what you want really
I’m glad you found it helpful! Draft definitely takes practice, so embrace the learning process and enjoy the process of getting better. It’s one of the most fun parts!

Doing my first draft tonight and also my first time playing MTG in person! Thanks for the tips!
Good luck! I’m glad you found my guide helpful!
Nice content. I would love a video on improving as an experienced drafter.
#newdrafter - actually not me, my daughter doing her first draft by herself today. This was helpful!
That is so awesome to hear! Best of luck to her in her event! I love receiving comments like this!
@@NicolaiBolas she had a great time! Got to play a creature type she likes (raccoons!) and wants to go back next week. Calling that a win!
@@tychoMX That's awesome! Thanks for the report!
Thank you for sharing this :D

Haste cards that make more cards are best?
Thank you for the nice video.

Sorta #newdrafter, played MTG on and off again since fifth ed, great to revisit the fundamentals!

#newdrafter thanks for this video. I’ve been drafting for awhile, but never had a good in-depth explanation. This did it! 👍👍

@@NicolaiBolas should I make my decisions of which cards to get by the mana cost more than any other options? Thank you in advance

How is one suppose to know what colors the person passing to us is playing

Nice video, but I still have trouble to play Draft...
I had no idea other people were drafting with you lmao, no wonder i did so bad on these 😂
New drafter
#NewDrafter thanks man
You are welcome!
#NewDrafter thanks needed something a bit more basic to do better at drafts, seems awful when spending gems or golds and only getting one or two wins.
that's normal at first, if you worry to much about the cost/benefit, try quick drafts before premium drafts
