Draft is quite possibly the most popular way to play Magic the Gathering. If you want to go down to your local store and play Friday Night Magic, it is highly likely that the format will be draft.
In Draft, players draft cards and build a deck from those cards, that is, you pick one card from a booster pack and then pass the rest of the pack to your neighbor. Your other neighbor does the same, passing you the rest of their pack. Ultimately, you and a your group of 8 players open and draft from 3 booster packs each, the end goal being the construction a 40 card deck.
Since draft is so extremely popular, and also very lucrative, the current process of designing Magic The Gathering sets tends to create cards with draft as the priority of form and function.
So what is draft and how does it work?
If you are drafting at Friday Night Magic at your local game store, then you are very likely drafting from the most recent set. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the cards. Yes, there are a lot of them, and no, I am not suggesting that you memorize them, but it is a good idea to take a moment to at least read over the set list.

Tolarian Community College just to clarify. The artifact and enchantment removal spells in aether revolt were very playable. I always maindecked the first decommission. Additionally, those cards were actively good in sealed
Just a suggestion for giveaways at later dates, rather than offering all of the prizes in two, I think it'd be better if you offered the PW Decks, Boxes, Bundles etc separately, so that more people have a chance. It feels more encouraging, as I know I certainly won't win.

My friend got me to come to a Magic draft after school. I usually play Pokemon and had never touched Magic before. He spent about 30 minutes teaching me the game and the rarities of cards. My first pack I pull Athreos, God of Passage and remember tapping him on the shoulder and asking if this was the rare from the pack
That bring back memories ! I started on avacyn restored set . My friend recommended me to buy a pre made deck. It came with a booster pack and I got a Tamiyo from it.
I got a card and they said it wasn’t that good.
It’s worth a couple of bucks now.

step 2 pick the most expensive one if tied take higher rarity
step 3 repeat from step 1 until no more cards are left to google
step 4 figure out how in the name of all thats holy you get your draft to work so you can at least take a trophy win with you
step 5 sell cards you picked to be able to afford next fridays buyin and repeat until no longer invited
step 6 search for a new gamestore

I watch all of your videos for beginners, even though I am an experienced player, for the sole reason that your content is so exceptional. And when I do I STILL learn things I didn't know about the game. You are truly a great content creator and I am forever a fan.
Just a tip, if you are an experienced player you can save some time by watching almost all of their videos at 1.5x without missing anything (you might go up to 2x, but 1.5x is perfect)
Gonzalo Arreche Hahaha, yeah, I like to do that too on narration-heavy Videos.
Step 1: Pick the foil because foils obviously gives you the advantage.
Step 2: Pick the legendary card because they can be used in commander later on so its great to save it.
Step 3: Pick any card that says "Win the game" because it wins you the game.
Step 4: Pick any 0 cost card such as Ornithiopter because then you can keep a zero land hand and still play the 0 coster.
Step 5: Pick any card that looks cool because your gut is always right.
Step 6: Pick, at random, any remaining card. You will probably sideboard these however because they obviously aren't as good as the ones you picked before.
An exception to this rule is Fatal Push. Always pick fatal push.
Swimmerwoad I tried this, and I went 0-3 at FNM. I think I might be doing something wrong. Can you help me?

Aether Revolt(184 cards) is a much smaller set, than Amonkhet (269 cards). That is why the set review was shorter.

I watched this video before going to a draft I had impulsively signed myself up for and I can't express how much this video helped me. I had never done a draft before and was really nervous. Admittedly, I still made some mistakes during the drafting phase and my deck didn't synergize well with my commander but I was able to pick up a lot of answer and removal cards that kept my blockers alive. By the end of the game, one of the players had built really well and had a terrifying board state that no one was prepared to deal with but thanks to a lot of scrying I finally drew one of my bombs to sneak my creatures past his and the 2nd scariest player's defenses to knock them out of the game and cleaned up the last player on my next turn for my first draft win! Despite being a nervous wreck for most of the event I'm glad I signed up. I had a fun time, made some new friends and even got invited to come back out to the shop tomorrow for some casual commander(wish me luck!). I'm sorry for the long post but just wanted to say thank you for last minute info and confidence boost, I can't wait to enjoy some more of your content

Helpful. I gave away all of my cards 10, years ago, after playing since 1993-1994. I had only ever played casually with friends, so I'm trying to learn about different game formats before starting to play again.

Thank you for this advice! I ended up 3rd on my first dominaria draft! Where the rares get picked by the end of the game as price.
I ended up taking Teferi, Hero of Dominaria (I'm on third place) because Karn (for 1st place), Lawbringer (second place) are all the expensive rares in this draft. Thanks TCC for giving us new players very good advice, keep doing what you're good at!

This video just helped me win the first ever trophy in my life - an MTG tournament (MH3 set) at work. Thank you, Prof! Only part that I'd love clarification on... and it's maybe a rule update since this video was published 7 years ago, is the part about not passing lands. I ignored the land cards that were passed to me, which meant I was at disadvantage when trying to play certain Eldrazi spells or pay for kicker costs. Luckily, I still pulled through.

I've only read an article on Quadrant theory before, but its interesting how that is apparently the best way for advanced players to evaluate cards (determining if a card is good in the early game, at parity, when winning, and when losing)

I remember drafting once and the rules had to be explained like 50 times over and over before we could actually start playing a game.

My LGS is almost exclusively draft for FNMs and I love it. :) We also have 2HG sealed the first Friday of each month. Standard is pretty much only touched for game day and standard showdown. For those interested I play at the Family Game Store in the historic Savage Mill in Savage, Maryland (USA). We're always happy to see more people. :)

Great video prof! I tried to get a few friends to play a Conspiracy draft with me, they turned up and we ended up spending about 20/30 mins explaining how draft works. Then we had to explain conspiracies to them haha. Now I have a quick reference to show them, thanks a bunch prof!

Hi Just had my first Draft, was my first MtG event at my local store :D your video was a lot of help as lots of what I was being told you had already covered, had tons of fun and cant wait to attend more magic events in the future.
There are some sets where the land gets passed, such as Fate Reforged where there are no basic lands included in the packs. To prevent confusion I usually recommend new players leave the lands in until they are comfortable with drafting.

As a kind of casual player, i was wondering why something like as foretold is considered dirt?
As Foretold is not a bad card, but it will rarely have the support in a draft deck to utilize effectively. Draft dirt can also include those cards that cater to (and may even be great in) Constructed formats.
I'm not a hardcore Standard player but it's likely a build around card, *As Foretold* may be too slow even for Standard and may require ramping out to be really effective not to mention bad card quality makes it pointless, why save all that mana if you've got nothing to spend it on.
The card is getting a lot of attention, it could be big in constructed.
You may take it only as dirt in the Limited play, but a so called "value pick" because of it's playability and worth in Constructed.
Probably because you can't do as many crazy things with it in limited.
In a draft, you only have 40 cards; with so few cards slots compared to standard/casual, each card has to be higher/more purpose. You can't really afford to put in a slower or more niche card unless you've specifically chosen/built for it (and "building for" cards is much harder in draft than constructed, because you only have access to cards drafted).
I am doing my first draft for mtg tomorrow, it is called chaos standard. I hope this video helps me tomorrow haha, it was super informational and I learned a lot.

Speaking of draft, it'd be interesting to get your take on the sometimes contentious matter of rare redrafts, when to do them or not, how to handle places that might try to pull a "fast one" on people / not announce that they are redrafts, the issue of people feeling like going "F this I'm out and leave w/ their cards, etc.
(My opinion: Good idea to play with willing participants who know what they get into and how to draft well, if a store does it, it should never be at FNM, and should always be announced as being that type of draft ahead of time).
When I was younger and did this, I always kept the rares xD

My FLGS rarely holds drafts. I've only been to two, and both were in the first year of me living in my current home. First time I wound up going Blue/Black Exploit. Second Time I wound up going White/Blue Monks. Lost all my games both times. I wish they would do more drafts, they were a nice way to return to MTG.

Edit: As Fortold is god tier if you get to drop it on turn 2 or 3 but after that the power falls off dramatically.
Hey Professor! I find it notable to mention that after the first pick, the only guarantee that the remaining pack has 14 cards is in a Masters Set. Though I can understand not mentioning this, being as this is a new player's guide
A couple of tips I would like to add. To help you remember which way to pass, think about how in elementary school they taught you to look both ways before you cross the street. Left, right, then left again. Another tip would be that commons and uncommons rule draft. You have more chances of pulling commons and uncommons than you do rares and mythics. A bundle of sticks is stronger than a single twig.
Thanks for doing another video on your core topic. Instructional & informative videos about magic/card games and playing them. Please continue. Need some good shuffling and process of play (mulligans) videos still too. Remember, you're not just a "content creator", you are a Professor, so profess to us the knowledge you have gained even if it is rudimentary. That is why I am here. I like lore and comedy too, (Office Hours), but please keep to this kind of work.
I think I've still got a long way to go before my first draft but this video is super helpful in giving me confidence and knowledge to help when I do! :) I just don't want to be the annoying person will a million dumb questions...

I feel this particular video misses the following, likely at the end: 'Do look online for 'draft **latest set here**' as there are many youtubers posting their MtgOnline drafts here on youtube, watching other draft (and play there after) can be a great learning experience, and by seeing other draft and elaborate on their picks and deckbuilding, you can pick up the various strategies that are within this format as well as the most recent set (that you might be drafting from as well).
Otherwise a nice vid to add to the college, maybe you should record some drafts as well and make a 'draft playlist' ?
