I see this kind of behavior all of the time working in the public school system with inner city kids (aka my babies). They start with a stand-offish/crappy attitude, then through persistent opportunities to talk/express themselves they eventually let me in. I have had students tell me countless times that they like that I listen to them instead of just yelling or scolding.

My immediate thought would normally be the same but to be quite honest, my son is not much different and I can assure you, he was not spoiled and he learned discipline until he was around 12. I tried absolutely everything - at least 3 times. Whenever I speak with people about it, they always end up saying ""well, then I can't think of anything else".

That's what being a psychologist is like. People want to try and tell the one HELPING (Dr. Phil) how to do his job. You don't go to a co-worker telling him what to do when you're the new guy. I brought my son up on my own. I had him quite young. Lots of people said we’d be great friends. We never were as I made sure I was his parent from day 1. He refused to get a part time job when he was 16 (I was working 2 jobs). I took the WiFi to work on the Saturday and the card that accessed cable tv. I felt awful but it had to be done. He has a great work ethic now and living his best life in London. You have to parent and stand your ground even when you feel mean. We get on really well now and he laughs about me taking the internet to work 😂🇬🇧
My step father is to strict...he can be verbally/mentally Abusive at times....but he still loves us...but he never Admits to his own wrong doings and blames us for it or on something else.

It’s not often that I defend the teenagers on this show, however, she didn’t tell Dr. Phil what he was going to tell her. She asked “if I… Will you…“ I think he reacted a little harshly there.
She was trying to manipulate him and he was putting a stop to it.

Called her a shitty mother and said she broke his arm. He was punching and kicking, the mom was just trying to take pick him up and take him out 🙄 security came and took the crazy lady away because too many eye witnesses said the mom did nothing wrong.

Kids end up like this as teens when you don’t discipline them at 4 years old.
Positive discipline is necessary. A big part of positive discipline is support and listening and being taught proper communication. Or, if they were neglected and abandoned emotionally at a young age they will lash out as teens.
As a teen, I too was drinking bottles of Rights and Freedoms everyday.
I never knew what responsibility was until I reached my 20s.
Still trying, i'm not perfect. But I get where she's coming from. She's 10 times more immature, irresponsible and disrespectful than I was, but she will get there.....
