You ever watch Orangutan Island? They're really creepy animals. They watch and learn everything.
Orangutans are afraid of water. They only play in puddles and can't swim.
On the island, the crew members had delivered food and returned to the docks. It was a hot day so they decided to take a swim. Little did they know, the Alpha male was watching from above in the trees. The camera zooms in on him. You can see him thinking. Rubbing his chin and examining every move.
Then later that day it rained and the water level of the island rose for a few hours. The alpha male became cut off from the feeding paddock. Without the big boss man there the juveniles were going crazy, throwing food into the water, stealing from the females and babies, tossing sticks and stuff.
So the alpha male starts losing his shit. He's pacing back and forth. Looking across the water at all the chaos. Then suddenly, without warning and thought to be impossible.... The alpha male enters the water and breaststroked his way to the other side of the water.
Orangutans had learned to swim... On camera.
He then went on to teach all the others. They can all swim now and they've started leaving the island preserve.
Mind you, it may seem like a good thing, but these orangutans try to seal boats because they know how to use the engines. They are obsessed with whole milk. They are crafty creatures.

She knowingly and willingly went to hang out with a distressed chimpanzee. Nobody made her do that. The chimp didn’t break into her house and attack her, she purposely approached him. I’m not saying she deserves what happened but we can’t pretend that what she did was safe. It wasn’t. She may have not been the one to buy the chimp but she was regularly interacting with him and knew that he was distressed but still chose to go over.

@@deprestbimbo I literally specified that she didn’t deserve what happened, but we shouldn’t pretend that her behavior was totally ok. That’s super dangerous. She knew about the _majority_ of what was happening, she chose to be friends with this person, and she chose to hang out with a chimpanzee that she knew was distressed. I was very clear that I did not believe she _deserved_ it. I’m saying people need to stop pretending she was totally perfect and without fault. You should not play with captive pet chimps, you should not be friends with people who keep them, and you should especially not approach them when they’re agitated. By claiming she did no wrong you are claiming that ALL that behavior is ok. It’s not. This could have happened without the drugs, we don’t even know for certain the drugs are what did it. It’s impossible to say why Travis snapped the way he did when he did. If you’re going to claim her behavior is fine because she just had no idea, what’s stopping you from saying that about the owner as well? Obviously the person who bought the chimp is the cause of the whole thing. But that doesn’t negate anything else I’ve said. Do you want to claim that it was a good idea for her to do ALL those things that she did? That none of them were bad? Stop viewing the world as a black and white kids movie that you can just assign good guy bad guy labels to.

Worth mentioning this is exceptionally rare for Orangutans. Especially as in the wild they are mostly solitary creatures rather than social like other primates. No humans have ever been killed by a single Orangutan which should give you some solace. They are far less dangerous than bees, dogs or even cows who all kill humans very frequently. Orangutans for the most part are exceptionally peaceful animals and only attack usually when heavily provoked, although they are the second strongest of all the great apes after Gorilla's.

The thing about intelligence is that it grants great capacity for good and evil. From what I’ve learned what makes intelligent animals so dangerous is that you never know how any individual may act until you interact with them, humans included, because species wide instincts play less of a role compared to most other animals. Learned experience and individual thought are far more present factors. Intelligence always leads to surprises

Anyone who didn't think these guys could kill and are just so sweet needs to learn a bit more. First off a chimp has 7xs the strength of an adult male. These guys are bigger and stronger than a chimp. Primates kill other primates. Some primates even kill smaller ones and eat them. They are still very awesome animals. Keep your distance and respect them, the same with all wild animals.
