      Fun fact: They turn their heads to look at things of interest with their three additional eyes in the middle of their head. These three eyes see in better resolution with enhanced depth perception.

      @@greeenjeeens The straw example is perspective-based, the movement of the ”dark straws” is based entirely on your perspective and the straws don’t move. The ”mantis pupil” is completely different as it tracks your movement and moves independently. The black dot you see has nothing to do with your perspective, it’s actively moving on it’s own and tracking you. The two are completely unrelated and the straw example was an awful one.

    I rescued an injured mantis and kept it as a pet. It lived almost a year longer than it should have and loved sitting with my son when it ate. I love them. Beautiful and intelligent creatures.

      When I was a kid, I was on the front porch, and I guess a bunch of mantis eggs had just hatched or something, because there were baby mantises all over the place. I went around picking them up, and putting them on my arms, until I was basically covered in baby mantises. They were super chill, and it was a really cool experience.

    OMG like I had this character that was like a humanoid insect vampire, and I gave him that characteristic of having compound eyes with pseudo pupils that seem to follow you everywhere you go, inspired on mantis, but I didn't know a mantis pseudo pupil actually does that, what a coincidence

      They do. Pay attention to the video. The eyes moved while the camera stayed still. Don't allow someone else's words and lies cause you to doubt your own eyes. This is called a psyop. Believe them. Not your own eyes...

    Nothing looks scarier to me than this. Mantids look terrifying. Sharks have far more life in their eyes. Mantids just catch their prey and whatever part of the body is closest gets eaten. That apparent stare is creepy beyond all else.

      I love them they provoke zero discomfort to me they are cute at best. Did you see all their coloured variations in their different species ? Such as the orchid mantis and the butterfly one aren't they're cute?
      But on the other hand. I'm scared as hell by big spiders I made nightmares of them

    Tolle Erklärung, Dankeschön. Mantiden sind wirklich tolle Tiere. In einer Zoohandlung sind sie immer eng eingesperrt aber in freier Wildbahn sind sie noch eindrucksvoller. Auf Sardinien bin ich in den Bergen auf so viele aufmerksame kleine Kerlchen gestoßen, das hat bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen.

      I wonder that too. Pseudopupils happen with compound eyes generally though. So animals who routinely hunt compound eyed prey might not be fooled as easily as we are. A lot of critters see more or different wavelengths than we do too, so now I'm wondering if and how different compound eyes reflect, say, ultraviolet light.

      @@tazepatates4805 …ok I never said it couldn’t but you’re just automatically jumping to the conclusion that this feature serves no purpose without really inspecting the details that much at all. Also evolution does tend to get rid of traits when they don’t serve a function. Take all the animals who moved to caves and lost their eyes or their ability to see for example. Eyes are resourcefully expensive to upkeep therefore when they weren’t being used evolution got rid of them or downgraded their capacity to work properly.

      bees aren't kinda smart, they're straight up sentient.
      they communicate visually and with scent, they have a sort of Morse code they perform with bumbling their bodies around.
      they also live in complex societal communities that rival our own in terms of organization and hierarchy. Hell, they even fire bees who get drunk on fermented honey by chewing their legs off
