Rescuing a flying-fox dropped off to a vet: this is Waldo

- Waldo is a very skinny juvenile male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was hanging on a railing outside a child care centre. A quick thinking teacher scooped this little one into a pillowslip and brought him to a local vet.
Ignore me getting the sex wrong (he was hiding a tiny penis in his fur, which subsequently became evident.
Shannon, one of my fave characters at that practice was entertained by my slight oopsie, despite my condescension about him not knowing that a lack of penis indicates female...
Anyway, he's a boy, despite my pronunciation of girlhood. He has alopecia of unknown cause, which will have to be followed up with various skin scrapings if it doesn't improve with the standard treatment options. It could be a fungal infection or ringworm, but I don't know yet. It could just be that he is starving and has lost condition and fur.
His first hurdle is being rehydrated then slowly increasing his nutrition. I also don't know if he has hit his head during his little contretemps with fate; all of this has yet to be discovered and will be dealt with as it plays out.
I called him Waldo because I had a friend whose brother was bald and she called him Waldo Baldo; it seemed as good a name as any and nothing else suggested itself immediately as the exact right name for him.
I don't know if he's going to survive but I am hopeful.
Love watching your videos. Have always been fascinated by bats. They are so important to our ecosystems. I've seen first hand what happens when they disappear.
This lady is a Godsend! She is amazing with these animals! I love the important work she does!
OMGoodness, that cute little face and sweet eyes. Praying this little guy heals quickly. Sure loves that glucose.
Meg...I've decided I have to design sleeves for all your glucose tubes!🤣😇❤️🖤🦇🖤❤️
Thanks - it's fine. During my teat making season I can just dip them in latex. The tape comes from donations so I just wrap them.
Brasil love you.
Awww. Waldo definitely liked that glucose. He is a real cutie, and clearly has a sense of personal space. Shannon is like a little ray of sunshine, thanks for introducing us. I hope Waldo makes it through. He looked a bit like the Princess and the pea with his towels.
I guess all the rain you have had is resulting in more cases of fungal infection among the bats. I’m glad the smart Teacher scooped him up and called him in. He has a good chance to recover in care, and won’t be going hungry.✨🖤🇨🇦
Definitely more fungal infections in rainy times.
@@Megabattie Hopefully there will be some drier sunny days so they can let the Sun kill off the fungus. It looks very uncomfortable on the wings.🖤🇨🇦
Desde cuando los perritos vuelan jaja
He is so feisty, I believe he has the will to survive! Love to you, from houston.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💗💗💗💖💋💐
Wow, he loves that glucose! The cat and I have everything crossed for his recovery ❤️ Also, Shannon is clearly a sweetheart ❤️
Has to be with a name like that😂😂😂
THERE'S Waldo! Cranky isn't always a bad thing......
Good grief he is hungry.
I admire the bagged-fluid rack / counter outcrop…. It’s something I never thought of to do with that odd - counter space🤔
It's my new triage trolley. I just have to get it organised and I haven't decided how much I want on it yet.
Hi Waldo!!!!!
I can't say how much I love bats. Brilliant creatures. He's in good hands.
Hopeful hopeful, ok Waldo let’s rally!
Waldo looks a bit rough, fingers crossed for him.
He is a bit rough but he survived overnight
That's good, I hope he continues to survive.
Hope Waldo will recover! Crossing my fingers for him!🍀🍀🍀🤞🤞🤞🤞
Oh, keeping everything crossed for Waldo! Really hoping that he picks up okay and thrives. 🙏🤗🦇🤞
Cutie pie, hopefully a survivor Meg, hope Maggie's better now.🇨🇦🍁🌞🐘
I did a vid with Maggie yesterday... I don't make her hold her breath now.
@@Megabattie glad to hear that Meg, love from Canada 🇨🇦
Best thoughts and wishes 🤩🤩🤩💜💜
Poor little boy, he’s so hungry.
Hoping for the best for Mr. Waldo🙏🌈
The biggest glucose gel enthusiast I’ve seen yet. Poor little guy seems in miserable shape, but he’s landed in the right place to get the help he needs. “Waldo” suits him because it gives me a mental image of a skinny little balding guy. I hope he thrives and gives the name a new image.
Hello again, lovley and how sweet faced😊tell me now do any zoos anywhere keep these babies? or not as yet. ?I'd love to see one up close.with u there of course😊u never get bit.
I don't know about in the USA, but few Australian zoos even have flying-foxes. Sometimes the wildlife parks have FFs who have babies but I'm not a big fan of zoos or wildlife parks so I tend to not keep track of who has what. I don't believe the wildlife park bats are supposed to have babies, or if they do, they're not supposed to be released.
@@Megabattie Thanks 😊
🤞💛
Oooo baby. 😉🦇🦇🦇❤💋sooooo cute.
It never ceases to amaze me how wonderful these creatures are. One look at their faces and I'm had. Wishing all the best for this sweet boy!
Shannon is now also one of MY favorite people! 😀
Awww good luck darlin boy❣🦇❣🦇
Popping in to say hi, dear Meg & Waldo. He seems to be mellow .....! I recently took in an "extra" kitten. So, I am running circles to keep up with her. 13 weeks of energy!!! It is great seeing you on and well. Tee in USA🌟
Kittens have more energy than a dozen other creatures; it's a little known fact only revealed by actually getting a kitten when you have no human children to tire them out.
I wish you luck and more energy
🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Oh I hope he is a survivor... We need you Waldo be a fighter!
That poor baby all fungal like that. They are amazing creatures.
Another sweetie taken up by the great Meg… he’ll be just fine…!!!! Can’t wait to see his progress.
I Hope Waldo can make it!
Awwww.....Prayers for Waldo. 🙏💜🙏
Waldo Boldo made me laugh for some minutes!!! I hope Waldo is doing well, he' s so lovely!!!
Aww!! He is so cute!!!! Hope he has a good recovery!!! ❤❤
finally one who doesn't savage the tube, just happily laps up the sugary goodness inside it. it may well be a daft idea (it's me after all, what else would ya expect? lmao) but would a sling work in that incubator? like the ones mandy has for teddy etc. they'd still be able to have their feet hooked onto the bars, but laying down. dunno, was just a random thought lol. fingers crossed for him
It's a matter of attaching the slings - which is tricky; and preventing them from peeing in the air filters.
I have tried various things. I am getting something made by my guy who makes and fixes things. I'm over the entire fiddly bits
Waldo, I hope you are OK, make a full recovery, so you can be released. ❤❤❤
I hope he can travel with the juvies who are going up north next week. We need to get them out and have found a release place willing to take them on and get them out before baby season.
Oh, he's gorgeous. Here's to his recovery ❤️🧡💛
I hope Waldo gets a chance to get well and fatten up
Me too
Hoping for a survivor!
Waldo you have fans! We will be following and rooting for you.
I’ve got everything crossed for Mr Waldo to be a survivor.
Waldo: "How dare you say I'm a girl! I'm a boy, lady! I am very offended and will remain insulted as long as I'm around you. Don't try to cosy up to me with that stuff in that tube! Ummm...it is good. Very good....okay, I'm liking you better now."
Waldo is a very good-looking guy. I hope his fungus and other skin issues can be cleared up quickly. The crankypantiness alarmed the sweet vet tech...kind of funny. I love bat social outrage.
He’s so handsome thank you for caring for him 💕
He sure understood the glucose pretty quickly 🙂 Would they be able to heal from fungal infection in the wild? Wishing him all the best!
Fungal infections happen just like in humans low immune system
Eventually he'd heal by stretching his wings and airing them all the time. The dismally wet weather combined with his poor body condition made it worse. I think he would have just died because his wings were starting to contract; in his case he wouldn't have made it long enough to have healed.
Not a lot of food around during the rains either - the nectar and pollen is washed out of the blossom.
Waldo baldo cracked me up 😆
Humans are subject to a condition called "hypoglycemic rage." Otherwise known as FEED ME! This little guy was probably cranky from hunger.
The missing fur makes it easy to see his skin--it didn't look like there was any elasticity to his skin. Dehydration, I'm thinking?
Very dehydrated; still dehydrated
2:04 hi vet nurse ;-)
Shannon is one of my absolute faves; I didn't see him for a while during CoVid and when I saw him after months absence, I was so pleased to see him, thinking perhaps he'd died of CoVid and they'd buried him in the backyard of the vet surgery. I told him so and he laughed. I said - of course, they could have just cut up your body and put it one piece at a time into the wildlife body bags, which made him laugh more.
@@Megabattie me too!!!
I know cranky & feisty are not fun for you or your fingers but at least Waldo🦇 has fight in him🥺💕 He really is in the BEST hands!!🥰
🤞🤞🤞🤞
It was nice to meet one of your buddies!
❤️🦇❤️
Where's waldo? There he is.
And hi to you Shannon!
At first I thought poor Waldo looked so rough around all his edges in the thumbnail, so I was glad to see it was just the glucose and drugs 😄 Hope his prognosis is as promising as he looked at the end!
He survived the night
@@Megabattie very good news
Looks like he has ringworm. He is cute
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💙🤗
Where has Waldo been? 👀 (here's hoping for the best for Waldo!)
Found him on every single page of his book!
I know it was initially incorrect but the way you delivered that bit about "Well it doesn't have a penis, that's usually a dead give away" just sent me, thank you for the laugh. Wishing the best!
Yes, that's one of my standard lines when a male asks how I can tell, I usually say that a penis is a dead giveaway. But the juvies are sometimes hard to tell, particularly if they're very dehydrated; you have to grope around in their fur for evidence of a shrunken dehydrated penis, and their balls are often mostly internal at that age or not quite out and being shown off, so initially they look female.
Where's Waldo? Oh there he is, he's a bat burrito.
Hope it's not ringworm and just something easy. I caught ringworm from cattle and it took a couple of months to get rid of and I still have scars. Everything had to be boil washed or cleaned down .such a horrible infection.
Waldo like mum there's a fungus amungus
I don’t know if you know this or not, ringworm will would light up under a frozen light
I used black light to check for ringworm but it doesn't always fluoresce. Dust fluoresces.
Do bats get mange
Not that I've heard
Isn't it natural behavior for them to hang upside down ?
yes it is
@@Megabattie please explain why you limited his hanging I'm a novice and need some education might be useful there are bats in my area but I'm not sure what species
@@elizabethdaniels3127 When they're compromised, we make them lie down and rest; we give them no options for doing anything other than resting. Having them hang raises their intracranial pressure, and in head injuries that's not advisable.
Please do not handle bats unless you're vaccinated for rabies and trained.
@@elizabethdaniels3127 Welcome to Megabattie.
I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first.
I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
If you want to find further videos of a particular bat, just search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/name of bat
