I was at the game! Seated in the grandstand behind home plate.
At one point I randomly looked up at the scoreboard, and saw that Ohtani had thrown 65 pitches ... and only 10 were balls! Outstanding control.
He also hit the longest single I've ever seen, to the deepest part of the ballpark!
Very discouraging game for most Red Sox fans ... but after the game there were hoards of people waiting around the visiting team's bus, hoping for a glimpse of this amazing player.

His abilities as a pitcher and as a hitter are unprecedented. Not to mention, he's one of the nicest guys in baseball, very humble. I was at the Phillies game yesterday. His pitching coach said last year that Ohtani pitches "pretty" and doesn't need much feedback because he is so aware of what he needs to work on and what he can do. I don't notice that much difference in his mechanics this year, but he seems close to his performance in the latter stages of last season. He's got great balance and delivery. Even that little hop and skip that he does often after delivering a strikeout. The stats tell a good part of the story. Ratio of strikeouts to walks, percentage of strikes to balls, mixing up his repertoire according to the opponent and what pitches are working for him that day, etc. He has great natural ability, high-level fitness and training, and great creativity on the mound. Now I hope to see his hitting come along, since he's not been consistently at his best at the plate so far.

It was an Ohtani masterpiece, definitely. Even when he allows hits, he often renders them insignificant by then shutting down the opponent in that inning. One of many things I enjoy about Ohtani is his expressiveness and his enthusiasm at times. He's got a great way of showing his excitement, being pumped up, etc. He even has a bit of swagger to him, which is in his poise and mannerisms as well as facial expressions at times. I don't think it's disrespectful to the opponents at all. But I gather that occasionally he pissed off one of the opposing team, as happened in this game. It seems that Devers was upset at Ohtani's display of emotion after striking out Devers. It certainly wasn't directed at Devers personally. I think it's admirable that Ohtani is that emotionally charged and into it without trying to humiliate the opposition. Baseball needs more of that, too.

    • @oxeye8891

Rather, he has so much intensity and focus in the moment that he has to let it out after making the play. That’s one of my favorite things about ohtani as well!!!! @@user-kf5ty3rb8jn That's an interesting comparison. Both have a kind of self-confident and yet respectful demeanor in their sport. He appears to be learning how to "pitch" more tactically. I like that he is mostly keeping that devastating splitter in his "back pocket" so to speak, and only deploying it in spots. It's amazing that he can still light up the stadium gun at 100 mph, especially that late in the game, but even more importantly, his fastball command was so refined vs. that very solid Boston lineup, as he was popping the mitt and pitching to the quadrants all game long.

.275 BA ( he's currently at .240 and 4 HRs and 22 RBIs so very doable in the next 5 mos.). BUT to be unanimous again....the Angels need to make the playoffs!! they're at 19-11 curently and top in their division. if they can hold off the Astros much much better and really outstanding for the Angels and for Ohtani.
