I like that you often talk about "state of mind" because a lot of our natural hair journeys aren't just about growing our natural hair but also learning to be confident in and love ourselves the way God made us which can be difficult at times

I hate when people referring mini twist as a childish hairstyle but will go to the shop and get sengalese twist or jumbo twist style and won't say it's a childish style the only difference is adding weave but I love my mini twist with my natural hair....that's my go to style.

I'm proud we are educating ourselves about our hair and sharing this knowledge with others.

Clickbait Issue Addressed: The thumbnail photos are taken ONE month apart. My twists are that short and blown out my hair is that big. In this video I preached how I used protective styles to retain length. In my creative direction I wanted to use one photo of me rocking a protective style and the other with how long my hair is. This video is titled how it is because I've been using protective styles since I had a TWA in order to grow my hair long. It didn't occur to me some of you would feel a way, especially since im releasing the video on the blown out style next week. The video on the blown out style is going to be more related to hair growth then how I actually blew it out, because I'm using a RevAir. Both of these video are going to tie into each other which is why I made the thumbnail the way it is. Im not changing it or the title because it would defeat the purpose of how I wrote and planned the blown out video to be. My long time subscribers know how I work but for you new viewers please stop being so rude because I would hate to hide you from my channel or block you. Watch the video and think a little bit deeper when it comes to the knowledge im trying to drop on hair growth. Im not trying to sell you anything im just trying to challenge you and make you think a little bit deeper.

Sung Sooyeong African American hair doesn’t produce as much natural oils as other races so it is better to not wash hair so often. By not washing out those natural oils we need to not have dry brittle hair our hair grows. So dirty hair grows is just an expression.

For my fine type 4 hair, leaving crochet braids in my hair for too long put too much stress on my delicate edges and perimeter of my head. I think the weight of the added hair put too much stress on my strands as my hair grew out. I don't think people with fine hair can wear these styles as long as naturals with thicker strands.

Girl! You can't shame Bear for saying a bonnet is a protective style lol. It's a very valid protective style, if it's lined with satin! I really like what you said about customizing a protective style to work for ourselves specifically. I've realized that there are only 2 things that really protect my hair from breakage: 1/stop unnecessarily manipulating my hair when it's wet or damp (like detangling, twisting, etc...). 2/stop wearing my hair out in low humidity environment without protection (like a satin lined bonnet, a satin scarf/headwrap or a wig).

I agree with everything you said except for the statement that you can "not moisturize or detangle and put your hair in a protective style and nothing will happen." No two naturals are alike. My niece and bestfriend constantly wear protective styles, but still have breakage because they do not properly moisturize while in protective styling. To me, protective styles are only protective if you are still caring for the health of your hair as well. I've made this mistake myself in the past by wearing braids for months and not properly hydrating my hair. When I took the braids out, my hair was dry, weak and fragile, thus where split ends come from... meaning loss of length retention because it breaks or needed to be cut.

I contemplate getting a hairstylist to take out my braids or twists, but that's extra money and I barely make any money as it is. I also feel that sometimes these stylists be doing weird things. Every time I had locs or twists I noticed some of them seem to be connected together by a strand of hair. Like two twists look separated, but if I pick it up both of them move and I feel a strand of hair connecting the two.

I prefer braids over twists because i find with twists that my hair sheds WAY more than when i style it in braids.
Ever since I started washing my hair weekly, doing braids and throwing on some wigs.....my hair density has increased dramatically and its growing rapidly but its the thickness I'm most pleased with. When my hair hits shoulder length after shrinkage I'll start to wear it out more. I still get single strand knots and i just don't stress out about them like i used to, i just take the scissors and cut, done!
I have had many years of hair setbacks, this past year has been the most successful out of the 5yrs I've been natural and may it long continue!

Ugh I wish I could keep my hair in a puff for long periods of time but the way my hair would shrink and curl up on itself 😫 those knots, tangles and breakage when detangling after isn’t worth it. I always have to twist my hair or do flat twists or something so it doesn’t curl up on itself. Also how do you prevent single strand knots and fairy knots because I still get them even though I keep my hair in low maintenance styles?

Shampooing my hair in sections braided with toddler girl barrettes at the ends folded over once with another Barrette on it has helped tremendously as well as putting jbco on the ends. What I can't get out I just knew it with the scissors because it's really only one or two out of the entire head every now and then, not every time I detangle.

    • @sable7114
      @sable7114 5 років тому +10

For me also using a fine-tooth comb just at the ends where the single strand knots are worked a lot better as well then finger detangling or using a wide-tooth comb. Different areas of my hair require different types of combs. And I learned I really need to use a comb as opposed to finger detangling, it is less Tangled when I do that and also lessen the number of single strand knots which was absolutely horrible when I first went natural. There were mats as well in my hair.

    • @Nailbae

@@Nailbae yes, it has helped. Definitely whiter tooth combs at the roots and about a third down but particularly at the ends where my hair is not as thick, because I was transitioning, The Wider tooth comb could in no way get the tangles or the single strand knots out but a very fine tooth comb did without much breakage at all. My hair definitely must be moistened some with water before I start detangling and another thing that I fine works a little bit better for me is starting my detangled at the roots and at the moment I feel resistance I started two or three in below that resistance and it's sort of like helps the hairs Glide out, the shed hear Glide out more easily sort of like sweeping a floor where you start in the corners and you gradually pull the dust out. You don't necessarily always start from the middle of the floor. Seems like I have less shed here when I do that. It may have something to do with the length of the hair so that when I'm starting at the ends it is too hard to pull longer hair that shed with the balls still being very close to the roots through all of that hair so it's best to grab it closer to the roots first and just gently pull but moving down a little bit and sliding it a little more and then move down a little bit more and slide it some more if that makes sense at all. I should be in bed right now so it probably doesn't make sense.

The way we detangle depends on how much length we retain. I'm learning to be more patient and stop reaching for the comb so much and just gently finger detangle. Or gently use a wide tooth comb. I'm still a work in progress tho.

Protective styles, allow for the scalp to produce the sebum that actually protect and grow the hair. It also yes protects the ends in the way that you said. But, it means nothing if you’re not spreading that sebum down the length of the hair. Which is why, the hair is always dry once you take it down. I feel that taking the time to do the research, and working with your own hair is the best option. Doing something and taking the time to really see that it’s working before trying something else has grown my hair. This includes actually finishing products, following directions to see if they truly work for you, being gentle and aware of how you’re detangling, and not expecting everything to give you INSTANT GRATIFICATION. We live in a time where we expect everything to just happen right away, instead of just allowing the work and research to prosper. I hope people read this comment and know it’s all about love. • @tsimmonds55

I suck at detangling also. I just started getting better at it but its definitely a process. I live in NY and I don't like spending money on braids cause I can't do it neatly myself. I do suck it up and spend the money sometimes but for the entire winter season when the air is cold and dry my hair is in a protective style. My hair isn't as long as yours so I've just been twisting it and wearing a head wrap cause the twists look awful but its FREE. I got some length and hang time now so hopefully by winter it will be long enough to be presentable without the head wrap but if not twists and head wraps it is. Of course I wash and condition and moisturize my hair regularly during this time. When in braids I'm guilty of not washing my hair but I usually only keep the style in for 6 weeks at most 8. And it's not because i think dirt helps it grow. I'm just too lazy. Lol. I do moisturize in between though.
