When I was in middle school and high school they taught classes like these as electives, drafting/design, auto mechanics, carpentry, metal, baking, cooking, even sewing, now all of those useful skills for boys and girls are gone out of the schools replaced with classes that add many more homework hours, this is what we need more of in our schools

    • @sunrae7680

Melissa you are so right. They need cooking classes back in schools also.

Many of these courses were dropped because of liability issues. We’re a litigious society now because your own ignorance or carelessness is someone else’s fault.

Its true. I went to school when all of these were offered plus Drivers Ed. So much emphasis on math, etc. but no practical use for it; 1-3% will go on to use that math. They'll teach computers and more computers as a way to the future...but the IT person is helpless without an electrician, a metalworker, and a carpenter and even cooking, to feed him/herself.

I agree! I took Home Ec in middle school and made all my curtains for my house twenty years later from what I learned in that class. Wish I took carpentry, too!

Not true for everywhere. My daughter had culinary in 9th grade. They also have access to those classes from technical schools that align themselves with the high schools.
I went to a technical high school in NY so I had technical drawing and such.

It is so weird to me that builders will waste so much space. This just proves that there was absolutely no reason for that original pantry to be so completely unusable. Excellent job. It looks fantastic.

People keep more food on hand and use a lot more appliances now then when the house was built. Probably no need for a large pantry like people use nowadays. IMO.

When my daughter was 6 yrs old we did a major DIY Reno and included a large Tupperware container in a wall cavity. It contained schools work, class photo, family photos, local news papers, junk mail catalogs, showing prices of food, appliances, furniture, cars etc This is a fun project for kids
My cousin and her husband bought the house my dad built in 1950 that I grew up in. Dad aged about 90 got a phone call one day asking if he needed his chisel, it had been found in a wall cavity.

I had a brother who was so handy building things. You could show him a picture and by the end of the day he would have it built. He took an outdoor storage room that was connected to the house at the end of the kitchen and turned it into a walk in pantry when he was visiting us on vacation. It has been a real asset to me, especially during these uncertain time when you need more storage space. Thanks for showing this remodel, great improvement. Have a Blessed day and I did subscribe.

You have some mad skills. There is something satisfying about watching a project from start to finish at fast speed, and I like that I can slow down any portion to look closer. I wish I had learned these skills earlier in life. A big part of me so desperately wants to do these projects myself. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Wooden shelves are a must! They just add so much to the project! When I see those wire shelves, I think of cheap...wooden shelves tell me the builder has some class! And don't get me started on a pantry build with no drawers! LOL

Amazing job, well done. I just did a similar project to turn a closet in my kitchen into a pantry. It's not as awesome as what you've done though. I saw you have a kitchen aid mixer, maybe think about installing a lift up shelf for it. I installed one and I'm so glad I don't have to lift that thing anymore. Again, great job!

I love the little cubbies for baking pans. My kitchen has zero space for them. It's frustrating. At first I thought it was kind of wasted space, but then I saw the pans in there and was hit with the genius.

I actually originally included an explanation in this video but ended up cutting it out as to not disturb the flow of the video. That space used to be a closet for the dining room. I show framing it in in my "living room remodel time-lapse" video. Thanks for checking out the video and for the question!

Dude, there was just an empty cavity behind that wall right next to a kitchen with a tiny pantry for no reason whatsoever! The builder of this place was crazy. And you know The Fixer is dedicated when he does full showroom tape/mud/drywall work on the back of a closet that will covered by shelves and drawers. I'm not sure I would have even put THAT effort in! LOL Awesome work.
