  • Here I have the ORIGINAL DW Performance series snare drum before they swapped to the current lugs you know today. I was on a facebook drum group when I saw a lot of people calling out this snare as a rebadged PDP concept snare. This is INCORRECT. So I put this video together since I happen to own both a matching DW and PDP snare and share with you the differences. If you have any questions feel free to ask away in the comments below!! Thanks for watching!
    Also, I have created a sound comparison video.. you can find that here!

    I do apologize as my microphone went out and I had to modify my camera mic half way through the video.

    The butt-plates gave it away for me from the beginning, as I own five PDP Concept snare drums, and seeing as how the butt-plate on the DW looked different from what I'm typically used to seeing, that's how I came to my conclusion. But anyone who paid attention to the badges while you were spinning them at 0:40 would have noticed too

    Awesome video. I currently use the performance series in white ice i think it was.. 14 x 5.5. Thats what i threw that evans hybrid snare head on. Sounds awesome! May have to make a little sample video next time im at my acoustic kit in a couple weeks.

    Interesting comparison. I much prefer those oval lugs you showed and even the PDP lugs over the round Camco style DW lugs.

      That’s cool. I actually like the round. But I’m actuallly glad when ppl like stuff that’s different from me. It makes things more abundant for me.

    Thank you so much for this video! I have a similar snare, a natural finish DW Performance 14x5.5 with the same lugs, serial number 12064, and I'm considering a PDP Concept Maple shell pack to match

    • @ZackZweifel
      @ZackZweifel  Рік тому

      Those PDP shell packs are no joke. The concept series is honestly just as good if not better than the DW Design series which is made overseas for cost reduction.

    Dumb question here. What does the hazy snare side head, the snazzy DW branded snare/wires and the finish on the inside of the drum actually do better than those of the PDP? Is there any appreciable difference in sound or reliability?

    • @ZackZweifel
      @ZackZweifel  3 місяці тому

      Not dumb at all... the finish won't change anything but looks. The snare wires will make a difference as brass vs steel sound/resonance and buzz. As far as the heads go.. compare a coated and none coated. The hazy snare head will give a bit more dampening IMO but it's a nicer head than the thin plastic factory PDP head.

    I can tell which is which because of the butt plates. The PDP has its original which is proprietary, and has a distinct look.

    There are three generations of badges that I have on my pdp.
    That badge shows the old version of pdp.
    I have a floor 18x16 floor Tom with that badge
    Then they came up with the same badge but updated the pdp logo to be the new version
    And now the current version is the one that removed dw.
    Although the current is probably my favorite or the one before it.
    If any of that makes sense
    Also I prefer the screws with the pdp because if they strip the pdp can use a different tool to unscrew
    But if the dw strips it is much more difficult to remove

    • @ZackZweifel
      @ZackZweifel  2 роки тому

      Boy... if you strip a screw out it makes me wonder who tightened that up! Hahaha he-man?!? Hahaha but I do use blue loctite myself so it is a possibility!

      @ZackZweifel  Рік тому +1

      I wrote my DW dealer to find the actual year they did this. But no this is an actual DW snare drum. We did not swap any hardware. This was a short lived small run of drums before they swapped to the performance lugs we know of now.

    What was the cost of each snare?

    • @ZackZweifel
      @ZackZweifel  Рік тому

      The PDP new is around $280-$300 and used you can find them around $180-200
      The DW new was around $500 new and used you can find them around $400 (new style lugs) You can find the older style lugs a hair cheaper because people talk them down thinking it's a PDP.
      So quite the difference between them!

      @@ZackZweifel Man. I bought the 26 kick kit and the bop kit, same as you, in ox blood and ebony, then got the 18 floor, then the matching wood hoop snare in the same color, then the concept Black Wax 10x6, the Eric Hernandez 14x4 re-ring maple thiccolo with the 24k gold plating trim (worth it, even at the price now. I put a 42 strand brass DW set of wires on it and the knob is a white noise knob now. I threw the sabian hoop crashers on it, and its so cool. You have to try that set up. Same stock black chrome head.) Ive got another rare 1 of 2, and technically, its hardware is different from the second, but its DWs tribute to the original engraved 1928 black beauty. They gave one of their top shelf BNOB collectors shells to John Aldridge, the master engraver, to put the flower pattern on it, then put on 24k gold TUBE lugs, gold 3 way butt plate, gold MAG, gold true hoops, and I slapped an Evans hybrid on that sumbitch and stuck it in a studio a few blocks away from FAME studios in Muscle Shoals. This is all that put together, actually. The 26 with a super kick 2 batter, with the bop toms tuned super low to the natural frequency of the shells ( you know how low they get. Lolololol). The Evans hybrid on that snare with a 30 strand puresound makes it SUPER punchy with great light snare response in ghost notes. ua-cam.com/video/OeI0JvQ-mHI/v-deo.html
