Also would like to add that if you don't like carrying both keys on your ring...the new one and the old one for the doors you can have one key cut on one side for the ignition and the other side cut for the doors. When you get in and put the key in the ignition switch and it doesn't turn..just turn the key over and it will start the truck...Thanks
Excellent idea! Thanks for watching!
The ignition and door only have tumblers on one side?
@@anothersomebody8195 Years late to see your comment, but Ford is using a single throw lock in this case. Meaning the wafers are all pushing in the one direction. Thus, only one side of the key is needed to line up the shear line allowing the lock to turn. By cutting each side of the key different it's no longer a convenience key and you have a 50/50 chance to put it in wrong. Personally, I'd rather pull or rearrange wafers in the replacement ignition switch in order to keep my factory key operational, even if I've reduced security.
@@brad4407 Interesting design choice. Thanks for the reply.
Hey Everyone, thanks for watching. Be sure to check out what's happening with this truck nowadays. I'm completely rebuilding it from the ground up. You can follow this link for the playlist. Thanks!

How many miles are on the original engine I'm interested in buying a 93 f150 but miles are high
IF you turn the new key before installing it, as long as you didn't disassemble the new cylinder, just turn the key back to the position that allows you to PUSH that pin back in flush. As soon as you turn the key away from this position, the pin is pushed out and traps the cylinder IN the column - or out of the column. Remember, one step of removing the old cylinder was to push that pin back in.
Your a life saver thanks
Awesome video. Thank you. I have ZERO mechanical skills. Your instructions were spot on.
Same exact processes for 1993 Lincoln town car
P.s never turn the new key before installation I didn't read the warning the whole thing just falls apart and it's a pretty tough puzzle to put it back together
So how do you replace the starter Ignition on the 1988 E350 econoleone
It
Been trying to find a video to show the pin!! Thank you for your video
I had the problem that it wouldn't go in the last 1/16". After fighting it for 5 minutes or so, I took a rubber handled screwdriver, set it against the black turning part, and tapped it several times with a pair of vice grips I had sitting there. It went in just fine.
What a life saver this was thanks so much, mine had busted and did the same thing just kept turning and turning but wouldn't let me turn the truck on got the old one out and put new in now she turns smoother than ever
My key broke off in the ignition. This video is done well, thank you!
Please help me I have a 94 f150 and I took the old one out and the new one in but it actually won’t go in I’ve wiggled twisted rolled and it still won’t go in anyone have an idea how to get it in
Mine won’t fit in flush. Been playing with it but won’t go in?
Thank you for this video I had to replace mine today and you really helped me out and you saved me money. I appreciate these videos.
Cool, thanks, I was about to let my mechanic do this but looks pretty straight forward, so we order an ignition and we'll try the same thing you did.
I'll tape it back. thank you very much for your time. might hit you back on some other stuff. I've got 3 old ford trucks.
+Captain Carpenter sounds great! Thanks for watching!
Hey very good video just saved my truck going to the dealership thanks!!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
How about if you can't turn the key to remove old ignition?
Right that's what I'm trying to figure out
Cobalt steel drill .drill it out and eventaully u will be able to turn it enough to press that pin but remember to not turn your new key untill it is all the way in the cylinder or u might be buying another key thats the problem im having right bow
Drill that shit out
Thanks. It's easier than I would have thought. I think I'll be doing this soon.
Taking off the cover is unnecessary. There is a hole in the cover specific to this task. On the right side there are 3 holes, two have screws, one that's empty. I had to do this on a 1984 F250 6.9 IDI and it took me 30 seconds. You do have to turn the key on (engine off) to line the pin on the switch with the hole. I used an ice pick to do the job. My understanding is that all Ford products except the Focus is designed in this manner.
I'll have to double check for that hole you mentioned. It's been a while since I've done this, so I don't remember all the details. Thanks for the info!
MudFlapper359 its taking me ages to find that stupid thing ive tried so kany ways but it just not workin
Thank u for saying that , thought the same , like someone has tried it with 2 drops of S glue to get peice out lol , ordering mine now or going to auto parts ,thanks for video
What if you don’t have a key and that’s why you are wanting to replace it??
@@patrickwhelan2819 new cylinder lock should come with a key set
Thanks man Going to get me one I have a 95 Bronco and key is so worn once I start it It's no problem pulling the key out.
+gbrown4x4 Glad the video helped! Thanks for watching,
The ignition in my 94 F-150 was trashed. The outer ring would spin and was a pain. Replacement was easy with zero problems, HOWEVER, I have a factory alarm. The old key did not have a key fob so I did not think much of it. Now I am having issues with the alarm and draining the battery. It's an older truck and not my daily driver so I can figure it out in time. Just a heads up though.
Did you ever solve your problem? I am having the same issues, I have no key fob. I start it with a screw driver at the starter for the time being.
@@jasonguinn132 I replaced the ignition in the column, however I still get a blinking light on the dash that says Theft. The headlights will not shut of as well. I replaced the clock spring which did stop the air bag light from flashing all the time. I just installed a kill switch so when I turn of the ignition, I turn the switch killing all power and headlights
Pretty straightforward good video. Figured since I use the video I might as well like and comment
I appreciate that!
thanks to guys like you and you tube. now how to fix the dual gas tank switch on dash.
Are you asking me how? If you are you need to remove the instrument cluster cover. The switch is next to the headlight switch on the left hand side of the steering wheel.
+Joe Robinson (GettinJunkDone) Hey, thanks for the great vid, clear and easy to follow. I have the same problem you had, with the metal piece just spinning around the cylinder lock (in fact it fell off). The issue I'm having is that I can't turn the key, so how would I remove my cylinder lock if I can't turn it to the 'run' position in order to push that pin in? Thanks for your time :)
Peripatetic Decian The only thing that I can think of at this moment is to drill out the cylinder. It sounds extreme and I'd rather try something else first, but if all else fails grab your drill. I hope that helps!
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Oh damn, I understand, will do it as a last resort. Thank you again for your video and response, you rock!
There are FOUR screws on the plastic cover underneath.
Also, you DON'T have to remove that cover either. It has a hole to insert your Allen wrench/key.
Seriously? What keeps the bad guys from bringing a new cylinder with them when they steal your car?
@Leila-Mae No wonder it only takes thieves a minute to break the glass and drive off.
@@anothersomebody8195 locks only keep honest people out.
@@anothersomebody8195 The key that you're replacing has to be in the ON position in order to remove it .
Thanks for the video, i have the exact same problem with my 92 F150 , so this is going to help.
I have a 1995 ford bronco xlt, and im trying to fix it asap
So this is really going to help
Flipping awesome, thanks bro.
Big help thanks for posting
Thanks for watching.
What if you broke the back tip off because
u didn't have in in the on position.. how do
Get it.that apart
I'm running into the same problem you had with it not going in all the way. I've wiggled it, pushed it, tapped it and still no luck. Any suggestions?
Hopefully you've gotten this figured out by now. But! In case you haven't I'll tell you that all I did was work it for a few minutes and it eventually slid right in. I didn't have any REAL trouble that I remember. Good luck!
Me too. Idk what to do.
My problem is tumbler got stuck to where the key won;t even go in..how can I change the 'tumbler on my 93 F 150 without a key? (I really goofed when I took the key out and tried a spare key..trying to turn the ignition switch..and it went to lock position . key will not go in tumbler.cylinder at all. Any way to remove without inserting the key?..PLEASE any help with this I'd really appreciate !! Thanks for the step by step video.
Thank you very much! This really helped!
my replacement will not go in all the way, and now the old one won't either
this same thing happens in my 1993 Ford Taurus GL the part goes around in circles on its own its making me pissed off when it gets locked up when i try not to lock the steering column i am in need of a new one
the key works, but the key wont come out of the ignition, any reason why?
"There we go! Super easy!" I've seen a bunch of these. I need to add "what the fuck is this thing hung up on that it won't go in?" to my search.
Thank you for your perfect demonstration anyway. Dark out. Try again tomorrow.
Mine is 92 f250 I'm assuming if it's the same. But my keys are gone. It's impossible to put the key that I don't have into the ignition and turn to the run position to press the release pin. Any suggestions
Sweet got it done thanks for your help
Got the new cylinder in and turns great. Vehicle still won’t start, there’s no programming in these keys I assume so what am I missing
How did you turn on the ignition when the switch was spinning initially. I lost my keys and am unable to turn the switch to on before removing the cylinder. Must I drill to remove it?
I hope you already figured something out. Might just try to put the key in as far as it will go. If it's not all the way in, rotate it until it slips the rest of the way in. Then, the KEY might trun the cylinder. ;-)
@@jayherde0 dude just said he had NO keys
gonna try this out tomorrow wish me luck guys😄 lol
How'd it work out?
it worked out really good got it off easy and i was able to put the new one on 😄
Good work!!
thanks😁
Your video is appreciated man. I had the same exact issue, outside just spinning, door chiming. I had no problem getting it out but when I put the new one in, the pin pops out into the hole correctly telling me it's in all the way but the switch will not work correctly now and I can't figure it out. It just won't go through the positions correctly. I bought it off Amazon. This is the third one. Same look and size, different brand. Same problem. Hopefully that makes sense. I've tried a bunch messing with it and it's just the same thing lol. It drives me nuts because it's a simple, straight forward repair. Can you give me any tips? Perhaps something I'm not doing it right. The switch works fine with a screwdriver with the cylinder out but I can't leave it like that.
Hey Ken, I wish I could help more, but I haven't done this type of repair in a number of years. I'm hoping someone else can come along and leave some helpful tips for everyone else.
If I crank in park, it will not come out of park. I can turn my key to acc position and I can put it in neutral position, then move to drive and go.ANY idea??
Thanks for the video but you didn't show how to put it back in. How do you align it? Do you have to press the pin in before sticking it back in?
I just installed mine on my 94 bronco did everything the same as in the video..it wouldn't turn the truck on..I got another new ignition just for shits and giggles and the new one won't work also any advise?
for anyone reading this, the 12v tabs could of broke off inaide. the tabs are on the bottom of the ignition. if you can take it back out and see where the tabs are. maybe they are gone or bend out the wrong dir. when i took mine out i saw a tab flow out. didnt know what it was. but it had another one that was bent.
wow nice video! now i just need to replace...the ac, the heater core, the smog pump, the transmission lines and the rest of the truck lol!
I'll give you an "Amen."
Me too. -.-
Thanks
Joseph Robinson I gust drilled mine out
It worked out good.gust be careful
K the truck knows its on
So if it needs to be in the on position to pull out , how do you change one out if you lost the keys?
Same question here.
My issue is that it is spinning freely just like that, but even with the key in the slot I can't rotate it. How am I supposed to replace the damn thing if I can't turn it to Run?
Same shiit here
Figure anything out?
@@kingjr1243 yes! So Ford being Ford, try to move your wheel while also trying to turn the ignition with the key in. Your wheel should have just a little bit of play in it, even though it's locked. Try to wiggle it back and forth and as you do it, try to rotate that ignition. It should free up.
@@kingjr1243 sometimes the ignition tumbler gets locked at certain positions of the wheel.
you should have video you putting it in, that's where I'm stuck lol
Mine just slid right in without any problems. I wish I could be of more help. Either way, thanks for watching.
Me to its not working
@@GettinJunkDone 1996 works too right
lol didnt even show the installation.
I put the new one in. It cranks up fine but still wont shut off, which is why i replaced the old one
Could be a wiring issue?
cant get the new one in...how did you do it
can this video method work for a 93 ford ranger? because someone i know is telling me i have to pull out the steering column and then putting it in(even tho he’s pretty much drilled the ignition hole already)
Can this drain your battery. I have a 1994 f150 and it’s broken but idk if that’s why my battery is bing drained
After you toke old cylinder out, and didn't turn the new cylinder. Did you put new cylinder in like it was off or on run???
Thank You! how did you link it back up with the battery?
Some kids tried to drill my ignition out. I cant get a key into it anymore. What are the required steps if you cannot get a key into the ignition?
Thanks.
I'm having the same problem as you, except that I can't get my key to turn to the on position. Any ideas?
Same here
Cant find that pin to push on 1991 ford escort. Does the whole thing need to be disassembled?
I do not have a key for the old ignition but I still need to replace it how can I replace it
How do I do this without my lost key?
Great video, thanks. Is anyone aware of being able to do this without the key in the on position? I have lost the original key and have no spare… learnt that lesson..
I can't find a tutorial for the ignition switch box
this was really helpful but i lost my only key to my original thats why im changing it out. is there a way to do it without the key?
I'm not too sure to be completely honest. I know that the lock cylinder can be drilled out for removal, but I have never had to do that myself. I would suggest searching UA-cam for something like that. Good luck, and thanks for watching. I hope you get it figured out and have the vehicle back on the road soon.
If you have other Ford keys or friends with Ford's, you could try the other keys, I have unlocked other people's vehicles that had locked themselves out of their vehicles. One of my friends said that if my key fit his lock that his key would fit mine... It didn't...lol
Once you figure out how to do it is almost scary how easy it is
I pushed the pin in but it won't come out, any suggestions? Need this truck so I can get to work😂
And remember DON"T THROW THE OLD KEYS AWAY you will need them for the door locks, I won't do that again.....
is there any way to keep it so you still use the original key? i mean like, swap internals or anything of the sort.
You could totally take the lock cylinder apart and adjust the pins, but I wouldn't recommend it based on others' experiences I've read about on line. Another viewer suggested getting one of your keys cut one one side to match the new ignition and leave the other side for the door. Saves carry a key! Good luck!
I saw your video and noticed void in dash where dual tank switch goes. mine fell in dash . I was kind of kidding. but is there a fix? it looks like tabs broken on switch module. how does cover on dash come off ?
Gotcha. If I remember right the cover comes off after removing a few screws. The screws are behind the silver colored horizontal accent pieces. Those pieces should snap right out, but I've never been able to remove the dash cover without damaging something. Hope that helps.
what can I do if I can't turn key to the start ?
What happens if key wasturn before installaion
Is there a way to change the ignition switch if there’s no key ?
SL Brewer drill it out then turn the cylinder
CrypticPlayz really?
Hmm. I have a 93 IDI turbo 7.3 F350 long bed double that I love and lost the damn key. I wonder if I just drill it to hell that would work without the key to turn it to pop out the pin. If anyone in the comments has experience with this scenario and has any tips let me know! Thanks
Thank you :0
I replaced mines now the car won’t start. Please hello
This just happened to me.. can I wait a bit until I can buy a new ignition? Or there's going to be problems?
You may end up being able to turn your truck on without the key so you should fix it before it gets too loose
so what do you do if you don't have a key to put in to run
That's a tough one. You may be forced to drill out the lock cylinder. Good luck!
I cant turn my key .now what ?
What if its stuck without it being able to put in the on position? Can i still take the cylinder out.
Use a cobalt steel drill bitand drill a hole .ram something in there after for leverage .it will turn and u will be able to push the pin .thats what i did
I found it good to go
Awesome! Glad you did. Thanks for watching!

Wtf do you do if your key is lost in your defrost vents tho?
A spring-loaded pin that releases a part is called a "detent." I know this because the M16 has one, and a drill sergeant yelled it at me a lot.
It's not spring loaded. My bad. This message was brought to you by the Tired Ass Veterans Association (TAVA).
THANK YOU FOR SERVING , BUDDY !!!!!
lol, with the brim of his hat pressed against your head no doubt
I lost my key and I bought a new one Like that any way I can get that out without original key
shook1996 Hey. I know you don't want to hear this, but the only way i know how to get around that is to have a locksmith make an impression from the cylinder itself. If someone else has a better idea, please let me know. I would call around for the best price. Good luck
What about with no key?
I need help on my truck
My truck won't turn over
what if there is no hole to push the button underneath
In my experience, albeit limited, there has always been a hole for this era of lock cylinder. What year if your vehicle? Is it an F150?
Done this and my ignition switch will not pull out.

the one part i needed to see was the install.... *sigh
What if you don't have the keys
I dont have akey

This is a poor video!
How so?
It didn’t fit so you played with it? Did you turn the key to the on position to install like you turned it to the on position to take it out? Is that what you mean by you saying , you played with it? Ok just looked at someone else’s video. Its turn on to take out and turn on to install.
