The intention wasn't to fight. It was to prevent Diana from jumping on Samira. I had a feeling Varus would pursue me, so I exploited his fantasies of an easy kill and had him run through my saplings until he got into a blind spot.
Maokai is a lifesteal tank, so Varus' corrupted pool is much more dangerous to negating his unique menace. Honestly, it's the Sunfire Aegis and Varus' fragility combined with the support fire from the fresh minion wave that really saved me.
