What a courageous man. To stand in front of a camera and talk candidly about these things looong before people were as forgiving as they are now. RIP Bela.

Still not forgiving in this day and age but yes it is getting better than 1955! I came to say the same thing. What a hero for being so honest about his struggle!

Love Mr. Lugosi, one for his epic role as Count Dracula and two for his bravery to get help for his addiction at this time in America. He’s the best.

**BELA LUGOSI WAS THE VERY FIRST HOLLYWOOD STAR TO ADMIT THAT HE HAD A DRUG ADDICTION PROBLEM AND TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP.**
This interview was held on August 4th, 1955, one day before his release from the hospital.
HERE'S WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED (from a 1955 United Press article):
"In late April 1955, the 72-year old actor, destitute and recently divorced from his 4th wife, checked himself into the psychopathic ward at Los Angeles General Hospital. A few days later, at a hearing held at the ward, Lugosi pleaded with a judge to commit him to a State Hospital. The judge commended Lugosi for taking action to fight his addiction, and committed him to Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk (a suburb of Los Angeles) for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 2 years. He enrolled in a 90-day rehab program, and upon its conclusion cheerfully declared himself "a new man."
One year later, he died of a heart attack, and was buried in his Dracula cape...

I am very impressed with him. He gave up alcoholism while still addicted to narcotics.. That had to be hard. Then he gave up narcotics. And in the midst of poverty here he has a happy, bright and dignified approach.

He did have a great deal of guts to come forward at that time!! Amazingly, he kicked the habit cold turkey, extremely difficult to accomplish!!

This is a lot different from the movie, cause in the Movie 'Ed wood' it showed that he didn't complete the treatment because of money. Is part of that true? or was it just made for the film?

Well I’ve read that Frank Sinatra donated 1000 US dollars for his rehab, because Lugosi was broke. So I guess the movie got a little twist for the story. Pretty good movie actually, but kinda sad that the man spent all his money on drugs

Great man bela was. Opiates are wonderfully nasty, especially getting off them .
    He seems delightful.
