      Yes well he was a count that's why he dressed the way he did etc. People associate the suit and cape with vampires now but it was because he was a count that is how a count would have dressed.

    This is a great scene, and shows how acting, not special effects, defined movies of earlier generations. Bela Lugosi definitely defined the Dracula image like no one else could.

      But this movie does use special effects. It's not like special effects wasn't a thing in 1931, it was. I would argue what's more powerful about this scene is the absence of music. While music from a soundtrack can make a positive impact for a scene some people, including some film school professors, I argue feel it's a necessity and I don't think that way. Scenes like this show me that sometimes music isn't always necessary for a dramatic scene like this.

    Bela was almost 50 years old when he made this movie and certainly didn't look it considering the era it was in. It's so horrible that in reality he didn't have much as a Hollywood star and the last 10-15 years of his life he lived in a lower middle class neighborhood and had a drug addiction due to his backbreaking work in some of his movies. And from the interviews I've seen, he was very friendly and personable.

    0:24, this part right here. When I was looking through the different incarnations of Dracula for an art project I was stunned by just how bat-like this particular actor's gestures were, and to do so in an age long before special effects when cinema was essentially theatre shows a mastery of physical acting. Look at this part though! It looks as if his cape is a bats wing being unfurled. The unease that that one gesture put me in was incredible, Bela Lugosi truly defined the character in his own right.

  • @9zamire
    @9zamire 2 роки тому +42

    Van Sloan's acting was also incredible here. The way he enters a stupor, mindlessly entranced by Dracula's hypnotic gaze, then gathers his willpower together and begins fighting to step away.
    Amazing storytelling told through expression and body language.

      We don't know the ethnicity of the character for sure, but in reality the name "Dracula" is derived from a Chivalric order called the Order of the Dragon, founded by King of Hungary Sigismund of Luxembourg (to uphold Christianity and defend the Empire against the Ottoman Turks) and only Hungarians held the noble title "Count" in Transylvania through history. On the other hand it's fiction and ethnicity is not the main focus of the story so let's just enjoy it.

    Ninety years after its filming and this scene still captures the drama of the Holy vs evil. As a child I never noticed much Sloan's performance as Van Helsing falls under Dracula's power and then resists it. I just love it when Dracula says with sarcasm,"more wolfbane?" and then lunges at Van Helsing whose crucifix both repels and terrifies him.

      I'm 26, this is my first time seeing this scene. The acting is good, but it's nothing special. They are just giving a calm level headed simple delivery of the script. Acting is most challenging when trying to convey authentic emotions, especially crying.
      Nothing in this scene points to these actors being bad. But at the same time, there's also nothing in this scene pointing to them being god tier actors without rival

    Bela Lugosi is to Dracula is what Robert Englund is to Freddy Krueger, and James Earl Jones is to Darth Vader. He embodies the character, to the point where it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Several actors might have portrayed Dracula within the 130+ years of the character's existence, but Lugosi's portrayal of the Count will always be the most iconic version of the character and the Lugosi Dracula wii always be one of the greatest movie villains of all time.

    • @gaborhajdu3957
      @gaborhajdu3957 9 років тому

      Surokh That is correct. Modern potrayals often go for Count Dracula=Vlad Tepes (such as the Gary Oldman version or the new Dracula Untold) despite the fact that in the book they are explicitly not the same person. Count Dracula was a transylvanian noble of szekler origin (he even identifies himself as one) who supposedly learned black magic from the Devil in Scholomance (a rumored school underneath a lake near Nagyszeben, Transylvania) when he was alive and he became a vampire due to his evil. He also speaks hungarian with his brides.
      Why then, does he have a romanian name? My personal theory that his peasants were most likely romanian (hungarian nobles with romanian peasants were quite common in pre-Trianon Transylvania) who called him Dracula because of his evil personality and fiendish powers. After centuries, he presumably forgot/abandoned his original szekler name and adopted the moniker that the peasantry gave him.

    The idea that Lugosi learned his lines phonetically is a great story, but I've come to think it's a myth. He'd been living in the US 5 years and playing Dracula on stage for 3 years. It's hard to imagine he wouldn't have picked up some English by that time. Lugosi would later explain his odd inflection in dialogue readings as something Browning specifically directed him to do and that it was not the way he played the character on stage. A great performance, whatever the truth may be.
