She was absolutely clean in both performances. She's young here, and that's evident in the presentation, but completely composed and wonderfully enthused. Bobek was far more mature, but the two falls knocked the life (not to mention the technical merit) right out of her program. Kwan should have medaled here.
@@nipaipo36100 but then again if it weren't for this questionable judging, Kwan and her team would not have gone back to the drawing board and we wouldn't have had Salome a year later. :)
She was clearly underscored. A total of 7 clean triples with 2 triple lutzes and additional 2 axels, and she's not even 2nd in the long. Some even scored her in 4th for this jammed packed program. WTF!
michelle is soo cute at 14 yrs old and to skate a program with seven triples was amazing and she was graceful to. beautiful program and beautiful skating. I have watched this almost everyday . she should have earned a medal. all this judges are biased.
Erlinda Baybayan The 6.0 system was inherently subjective and totally absurd. The "new" system is much better, but in an "aesthetic" sport there's no real way to make things objective... The GoEs, the Skating Skills, the Interpretation... What really bugs me is the Choreography, since that's literally just down to whether or not you have the funds/clout to nab one of the major choreographers. Though, looking at the detailed results for the 2016 Worlds, I'm not quite sure how that egg-laying, face-palming Firebird Lori Nichol constructed for Gracie Gold ended up many points ahead of, say, the gorgeous Gone With the Wind program David Wilson made for Alaine Chartrand... Gracie's "CH" marks are several points higher than Alaine's, which I just don't get... That's why figure skating is, in many ways, not a "sport," which is unfortunate for the athletes who dedicate their lives to this pursuit and train day-in/day-out for 20 years...
And Michelle Kwan became an artist on ice next year..... and she won the 96 National titles and 96 World championship. ( Lu Chen deserved the 96 World championship, too. )
Honestly, I am glad she didn't win a medal here. She was perfect technically (landings were a bit slow), but did not possess the maturity she would the following year. I think it was GOOD that she didn't medal, because that was the catalyst for completely changing her style in the following year where she won the gold and emerged as an artist.
But that doesn’t make any sense. She skated a perfect program. Didn’t mess up anything. Never fell on any of her jumps. Why were her presentation marks so low? I don’t think that was really fair.
Thanks so much for posting this! Obviously her choreography would improve greatly in just one year, and she'd ultimately become known as one of the most expressive skaters in history. But come on Frank!!!! A pony tail. 20 bucks says if she had worn a touch of makeup and had her hair in a bun the marks would have been at least a tenth higher on presentation, hahaha. That's how bizarre the lovely world of the sport we love can be at times :)
Michelle has more poise, skill and artistry here than lipinski did in 97 or 98, yet the judges never had any reservations against putting lipinski in 1st place. Can anything other than race account for that?
Lipinski had a triple loop-triple loop which is the only reason she was winning. Without that she is lucky to medal. Michelle did not have something like that to force judges to put her over older skaters who did the same jumps and were more mature. Plus like Dustin said the field was godawful in 97-98 which helped Tara.
@@rolandgreen7484 Tara didn't make a correct 3+3 , and she paid for it by got hurt. Tara had a kid's body and weight, easier to jump higher. Michelle's artistry and technique were better, if Tara hadn't a 3+3, Michelle would win.
Her presentation marks werent bad. However Bonaly had stronger technical marks, Chen better presentation marks, and Bobek a stronger shorter program, that is why she was 4th overall.
I’ve watched this do many times and still cry because she is such a highly sensitive person but tough as nails. In the end it’s best she didn’t ein becsuse she snd Frank snd Lori Nichol slayed the next year with her Danza Romance SP and that killer Salome Free! Her journey is do great to see over and over again!
can t believe she did not win the free programm. this was the best programm of the night. technicly way better than chen s programm. artisticly better than bonaly
Had this program been marked today, she would've won. Chen had 4/5 clean triples, Bonali only had 5 clean, and bobek's 2 falls would have sealed the deal! All of Kwan's triples were complete. lol, man she could've won!
It is hard to say. Today they might have just used the PCS to give Chen the win. It would also depend who has higher levels of spins and non jump elements. Bobek might have had a shot even with the 2 falls due to her short program lead, the triple lutz-triple toe, and probably higher levels on her non jump elements and higher PCS than Kwan. Bonaly would have been out of the top 5 under the new system here.
The flow Kwan had in exiting her jumps was simply incredible. Her basics were evident even back then. She also had innate musicality, but it was more subtle and hidden behind a junior-ish packaging. However, you can tell she had natural musical phrasing. People say Bobek had better presentation here and she may have, but I don't think she had better artistry. Bobek's interpretation of music always seemed superficial to me. She had charisma, but the more low-key routines were unconvincing.
I don’t understand why her presentation marks were super low. She skates a perfect program. No mistakes whatsoever. But yet her presentation was lower than her technical marks? I don’t think that was really fair.
This was an electrifying performance, the best of the competition and it really did not sit well with many that she came fourth. She should have been higher in the short too. The lower marks were supposedly to reflect her artistic immaturity at this point (she was 14), which is a valid point, she was, but she definitely should have medalled in Birmingham.
The funny thing is that US media already proclaimed Lu Chen as the winner before Kwan even skated. Lu was third and Kwan fifth after the SP so Kwan did have a chance to win
Surya Bonaly was better than Kwan at this competition . Bobek did also a better performance in the SP. Kwan deserved the 4 th place, nothing more . In 1996, at the worlds , Lu Chen was better too and won only the silver medal . Kwan had a beautiful career . No regret !
Michelle's performance was dramatic, epic and passion. Lu Chen's performance was elegant, graceful and beautiful. ❤ They were totally different, and both great.
I actually thought she was a bit overmarked. With her smallish jumps that lack flow out and no triple-triples 5.9s for technical merit are not justified, and her presentation can never justify a 5.9 at this point. Yet 4 of the 9 judges gave her a 5.9 on one set or the other. I might have had Bobek over her in the long even with her 2 falls as her triple lutz-triple toe is way harder than anything Kwan did, her jumps are bigger andfaster, her other elements better, and presentation better.
Markus McManus In the 6.0 system it's the placement, so in order to place say someone above a skater who had a 5.8 technical and 5.8 artistic, you have to give 5.8 and 5.9 to place the skater above the first skater in placement. The artistic marks break a tie.
I Dont like her program...Coz its Boring!!She was good jumper...But!!She was looked too childish & Not mature!!!So I glad judges gived 3 place to Nicole Bobek!!!Bobek was more interesting, beautiful more mature & deserved medal more than Kwan!!!
She looked too childish? She was 14! Bobek was a lovely skater but falls count against you in competition and Michelle ("immature" as she was, lol) didn't fall. Why can't people just congratulate a good performance or find one that appeals to you, instead of running others down? Geez, what is wrong with you?
Overscored. Should have been 4th in the long program behind Bobek which unfairly screwed Bobek out of the silver overall. Just one of a million times in her career Michelle Poo was overscored.
