Actually, I credit Tonya Harding for the emergence of figure skating’s global popularity, despite the fact that Michelle Kwan is far more accomplished.
Okay, that 3 flip wasn't her best. And yet, the performance is terrific ! Loved her interpretation there, and that blue dress is one of my faves from hers
The absolute artistry that only Michelle Kwan could interpret with such awe inspiring expertise. I will never become tired at watching her expertise of the ice.
2:17 - she was leaning in the air on that Triple Flip (she was fortunate to land it at all in that position)! You can really see it in slow motion: 4:48.
The Queen. The GOAT. Bigger than the Olympics. A legacy all her own. No one has ever come close. Thank you, MK, for all this masterpiece. I remember watching this like it was yesterday and crying tears of joy.
Only Americans think this, Europeans or Asians don't care about Kwan that much. She is overrated, she played it safe technically many times and her jumping technique wasn't good, look at the flutz and prerotated, toe-hammered underrotated flip. Irina should have been first here easily
She was def underscored in the required elements. This sport died ( at least in he states ) after a Michelle retired. She is a legend and can never be duplicated. So under appreciated
Interesting that the exact same 3F problem occurred in her long program. In both instances, she was tilted too far forward in the air and landed too forward on the toe pick. But in the long program she couldn't recover.
Michelle landed that triple flip even though she was leaning in the air on the rotation. If she put her foot down any other way she would have missed that jump.
Ilove Michelle Kwan of Spiral!😍 I love Michaelle Kwan!!!! I'm Japanese, so I am not good at English. I used Google Translate. I heard from the fans of Mao Asada that spiral raised his feet slowly and it is very important and it is very difficult to slide. That's why Michelle Kwan 's and Shizuka' s and Yuna 's Spiral have low difficulty and poor, she said. Is this true!? I do not believe it!! If you'd kindly teach me.

she was not robbed in Nagano. In 1998 she took no technical risks, offered no triple triple combination, no jumps at the end of her program, and her step sequences were not complex. You don't win in figure skating just with academic grace and lightness
Yes Michelle is a beautiful skater , but no matter how much I watch her programs I can't figure out what all thd hype is about and how she won first place all those years. I mean I wanted to see and enjoy like everyone else..lol..but i just couldn't see what the world saw. So many other skaters ( my opinoon) are just as good . Michelle skates very carefully very few triple combo's or combo's in general ..no biellmann, her footwork and choreography are nice , but nothing spectacular. I just dont see it .
It was the whole packaging put together fairly consistently and for a very long time. Your observations are correct, but she reliably skated programs landing 6 or 7 triples for several years; most skaters rarely if ever skated a clean 7-triple program during their career. Of those who did, they beat Michelle when they skated clean and she did not, or when their jumps were more difficult, as with Lipinski at '97 Worlds and '98 Olympics and Butyrskaya at '99 Worlds. Kwan started this pattern of accomplishment by landing 7 triples as a 14 year old at '95 Worlds. Her longevity merits some of the exceptional praise she gets--not only performing at a high level but doing so for 10 years (she did lose a significant amount of technical strength by late '04-'05 but how many skaters perform at the top level for that long?) She had no glaring flaws or weaknesses during her performances except for rare instances, such as '97 Nationals where she still landed four triples. She did nearly everything at least fairly well and several things exceptionally well, such as her signature spiral (very few skaters did an inside-edge spiral at all in those days, much less one with a seamless transition to an outside edge). Comparing her to her rivals, Lipinski did have a much more difficult combination of triple jumps and was duly rewarded for this at 1997 Worlds and 1998 Olympics. Though her skating was much less mature, she still beat Michelle for gold in Nagano. I would say Slutskaya, at her best, was better than Kwan on jumps and some spins, but even there it is close--Slutskaya had a great Biellman on both feet, but Kwan had a much better sit spin. Cohen would have been another candidate for a "potentially better than Kwan" award but she rarely skated a clean long program (only one that I know of) and usually had at least one or two major falls. Slutskaya had great technical strength and speed but not nearly the grace, elegance, and effortless artistry that Kwan had. Suppose we say Slutskaya was still better than Kwan at her best, if we value the technical strength, height, speed, etc. more. That would still leave Kwan with the distinction of having begun a career of top-level international performance at an exceptionally young age and lasting longer in the group of top contenders for world-level titles. Am I missing anyone? Other than the rivals whom I considered here, and who were duly rewarded when they outskated Kwan, who else would even compete with Kwan to deserve the level of acclaim she gets?
Thanks to japanese hdtv so I could see her flutz. Her arms when jumping and air position were not really good. But her footwork and choreo were nice. I just realize that she was so slow? I think Tonya or Nancy were faster than her. Idk.
The layback spin and spiral were very beautiful but her jumps (especially the combo and triple flip) underwhelming. Not a skater who excited me a lot despite her grace.
Her control on her 2A was second to none. Her 3L combo she stayed on her back outside edge, which is more than the other skaters like S.Hughes and T.Lipinski who flutzed their way to an Olympic Gold.
I can't even watch her SP's from 98 and 2002. She should have had both golds. Stupid judges and if you don't know why I think this then learn the rules
Gym Style lmao she fell in salt late wtf do you mean she should’ve had both golds? Nagano is debatable but no way she should’ve won 2002 with the same fucking program she did in Nagano
She was deducted by most of the judges for the flip. You really can't argue about the second mark. And if anyone came close, it was Sasha Cohen, not Irina.
The technical level of the sport is continually rising. The top ladies from twenty years before Kwan’s halcyon period wouldn’t be able to compete with her either.
Mountain Lover ... Divas can be rude. What’s new? Some of them even physically hit other skaters. Ask Nancy. So forgive Kwan for being “not nice” at times.

Mountain Lover ... Handed medals? And what does Michelle have on the skating organization that they felt that they need to hand her medals? 😂 So who in her generation deserved the medals Michelle received? Maria Butryskaya? Irina Slutskaya? Nicole Bobek? Chen Lu? Surya Bonaly? That flip was slightly under rotated. Her toe pick slipped out and if you see the slow mo review a 1/4 rotation was done on the ice. Wow.
It looks like she was very much leaning in the air on the rotation for the Triple Flip. Quite amazing she was able to land it at all.

She was overscored. She should have been second or third in the short. I love her but Sasha Cohen won the Short program.
It was a beautiful program and Michelle had done so much for figure skating as now with Yuzuru Hanyu.
So thanks to Japanese TV we can see she had a flutz with full blade assist and almost 180 degree prerotation. Amazing.
she is the best of all figure skaters
No🤣🤣
Interesting that the exact same 3F problem occurred in her long program. In both instances, she was tilted too far forward in the air and landed too forward on the toe pick. But in the long program she couldn't recover.
The problem was on the takeoff. When she plants the toe pick, the boot rolls over so that she’s almost taking off from the side of the blade.
Correct, she never really toe picked. It’s usually of a flat blade
Love it !
Anyway you can do HD videos like this of her 2000, 2001 and 2003 LP's ? PRETTY PLEASE
Michelle landed that triple flip even though she was leaning in the air on the rotation. If she put her foot down any other way she would have missed that jump.
Her flip was sloppy at this time which explains the LP

yes it is because she’s the greatest .
The thumbs down at her first marks can't have given her any good will with judges.
