Richard is one of the realest dudes out here changing his life for the better, telling his story and he’s one of the most underrated actors. He is a true artist, I’m so grateful I found out about him through his music back in the day. As a young Chicano, I feel so proud to see this. Thank you Jon, Thank you Richard!
@@ttt69420 not necessarily but I know jokes used to be a crackhead back in the day. I know those types of drugs especially crack or meth can have permanent brain altering effects even years after they’re last used. There’s a guy I know that was a tweaker for a decade that’s been sober for over 9 years and he still is high strung like this & sometimes has erratic mannerisms at times
I grew up on charlie row campo bro and I cried the day I saw this dude make it out the hood, I was so damn proud and happy for him, i knew it would help other people get the fuck out, out of this shit hole. I love my hood but we deserve so much more then this life we were given.
Let me tell you.. I seen Richard working out at LA Fitness on Fremont Avenue by Cal State LA. He looks very dedicated to his career and away from the B S in East Los. I was born and raised in East Los and it's a hard place to get out of as a male with the odds against you. Much respect to Richard. Richard deserves his own channel and podcast... There's way too many fake Chicano personas on UA-cam now speaking on gangs and youth.
You a hundred percent right about that. I grew up just next door in the Boyle Heights area & ended up at Homeboy Industries after my term just like he did. Stories like Richards is one of the things that motivated me to get out of all of it and make something of myself. Homeboy was my first job and now all these years later I work at a hospital & most people don’t have any idea were I came from or the life I used to live. Also your right about the UA-cam thing. I wouldn’t say it’s exclusive to chicanos it’s honestly kind of the whole gang culture/prison influencer lane that’s kinda wack. You can tell most of the channels are just vatos making shit up to make money. To where anybody that’s lived the life knows the shit they’re saying is bullshit. There is a couple channels that are legit tho Dubz is one of them
Yeah it's called Alhambra. East Los isn't that bad. El Sereno is worse. You need to watch your step in Sereno. City Terrace is also a place you have to really be careful. Moving out is easy. The problem is many people don't want to leave
@@art2736 he’s a very successful actor & for one this foo was in Mayans & a bunch of movies. How is he not a good representation? Homie used to be a drug addict & a gangster and ended up being one of the success stories for Homeboy Industries. How can anybody hate on that?
PTSD isn’t just a thing in us soldiers. This man fought a war as well, just on the streets. I can see in his eyes he’s been through a lot and seen a lot. Even in his voice. I hope he can vent like this more and also he should be in front of a camera or consulting Hollywood on LA gang culture more so on the Spanish side!
Jon is one of the best interviewers out there. He is a patient, active listener who waits for breaks in the conversation to ask pointed questions to deepen understanding. What a gift to give people a chance to give voice to their experiences and truly LISTEN and HEAR them.
I remember first being introduced to Richard on the Mayans Tv Show series . I always thought to myself this guy is an amazing actor. Watching this interview just made me realize he wasn’t acting on that show he is a “Real One”
My best friend got killed by a gang . I’m miss him everyday . It’s been 8 years and the pain is still there . No friend has made me as happy as him . The saying the good die young speaks volumes to me .. his tears brought me to tears … because he’s right I also grew up unmentored my parents weren’t around .. we become these little warriors with fire 🔥
Its not just the hood, i grew up in a normal middle class neighborhood where their is no violence or crimes but at the end i grew up robbing, threatning niggas with sticks, road rage for no reason just cuz a nigga looked at me the wrong way. I have ptsd from how i grew up in school being bullied for being a arab in america, so the hood aint the main reason. It’s everything that can give you depression or suicidal thoughts is what makes a person have ptsd.
I watched him as “Coco” in Mayans and thought he was just playing a character, i never knew he really had such a tough life and a lot of those were likely his real emotions.
Probably one of the best interviews ive ever seen. It felt like i was there, and the emotion behind it lets you know that its 100% real. I think He was reliving it as he told it. Its amazing to see how richard has grown since his rapping days.
If Jon ever sees this message. “Your podcast is very inspirational. It reflects the real life struggles past, present, and future for these actors. Thank you for the realness of ‘REAL ONES.’ I hope one day I can put messages such as yours out in the world that show the true humbleness in everyone. I'm not Jon Bernthal but I want to tell you that Ur message was good, it felt pure and straight from Ur heart and that is so rare in today's world of social media. In other words Ur comment was a "REAL ONE" Peace my Brother.
You did a great job allowing him to speak most of the interview and just throwing in some key questions every couple minutes. 👍🏽 can’t wait to see the full interview. Some other channel’s interviews can be a little overbearing for the guest and viewers.
You can tell he was so nervous to talk at first it was hard for him to articulate his thoughts. Very chaotic working through the trauma responses. Then once he got comfortable and relaxed he became so enjoyable and eloquent. Loved this.
I felt this at the beginning because I was able to get on the straight path after losing friends to the streets. I been following him since he was rapping as Baby Jokes and could also feel the passion and the pain in his music. Same as when he's acting. His dedication is now an inspiration for me.
Best podcast on UA-cam at this current time. No fake pretentious self image virtue signalling, no hush hush incase you piss off the wrong political side, no vain celebrities only interested in promoting themselves, no dumb off the wall conspiracies or contradictions, no force down your throat self help. Just real people that you can learn a lot from about what it is to be human - if you pay enough attention. Fantastic
I'm a first generation ex-con. I grew up in the System. In a foster home 10 days before my sixth birthday. 1973. From there I went from group homes to Juvie at 11 years old. 3 days later I'd be released to another foster home. I'd eventually go to Juvie and be released at the age of 19 into the care of Adult Probation. My official parole date is October 10, 2017. I got out of prison 2006. I was a ward of the state of Alaska for 44 years. Since the age of 16 I hadn't seen the streets more than 3 months at a time. Two months after my 18th birthday I escaped from Juvie. I was charged as an adult. Car thefts and selling to chop shops was my deal as a teen, until I went away at the age of 20 for theft. I escaped again and committed armed robbery. I received a 29 year sentence. I educated myself and became a prisoner mentor. I tutored over 400 prisoners between 1998 to 2006 in a private prison in Florence Arizona. I got out and worked, finally in 2015 I became a firefighter/EMT in Alaska. I received calls from 911 dispatch at home.
Back in I think 2008 Canada introduced new public smoking regulations, which also included prisons. Matsqui Penitentiary hired me initially to take over the work the inmates would normally have done, but they were all on strike and refused to leave their cells. Eventually they returned to the prison shop, and my role shifted to babysitter, basically. But it gave me the opportunity to get to know some of these guys, and learn their stories, how they ended up in prison. What I learned was, I was no different than most of these guys. I never killed anyone before, but I definitely did some stupid shit when I was young. The only difference between me and most of those guys was that they got caught, and I didn’t. Period. This life is given to us so that we can fck up, act badly sometimes, but then hopefully learn some tough lessons and become better people because of it. Sounds like you did exactly that. Peace brother.
Richard is a real one…Met him several times at our business in Montebello Blvd MRKT. Really down to earth guy from the neighborhood who loves the arts and the community.
not everyone is going to understand how deep these stories are! Only certain energies can receive this! the tears are deep enough!! love this interview, especially one with his primo, paulie!
I felt those tears, people don’t realise how the ghetto effects you. Us ghetto kids have just as much ptsd as a soldier in Afghanistan or Vietnam, just as much as there is war overseas there’s war on the streets that know one is safe from. God bless this brother 🙏
As a “ghetto” kid who did 2 tours I can tell you for a fact..YES the PTSD is just as bad as a combat veterans..I find a lot of my ‘street’ friends being as paranoid and broken as I am and they nvr left these shores.
What happens with ghetto kids who join..... The hood hates you and so do the white dudes...... We got double enemies.... Then we have to smile towards the world like everything is ok.... Listening to dumb crap like kim K make up, kim k dating styles, amber rose mentality, onlyfans and instafame girls talking about how man dont know how to be men..... Blah blah blah
For those of you who say they have ptsd like a soldier from Afghanistan or Vietnam are fucking stupid, you have no idea what we went thru or did, half of y’all saying y’all have ptsd is a Cover up from your bullshit with drug, your ptsd and my combat ptsd are not the same thing, I don’t buy tweaker bullshit
This is really eye opening, because its so relatable to the problem a lot of young men have today that they just want to feel like they belong. Because so many of these kids are born into shitty situations, gangs give them the sense of belonging they are so desperate for as well as a sense of safety which is so desirable when you grow up in an environment where danger is a fact of life. It is just so profound to see someone who has taken a completely different path in life, but who has done so out of desire for the very things all young men desire, to feel that they belong and are valued in that belonging.
I was born in East LA Montebello hospital. My family's house was right off of Whittier blvd. My dad and mom were fortunate to get us out by the time I was 5 maybe 6 to Bakersfield then fresno. We visited family every Christmas and 4th of July but the difference between my parents house and mentality and my cousins, aunts and uncles is completely different. Now I have my own family in omaha nebraska and I still have family all about that life and I'm grateful for my mom and dad for getting me out.
He’s goofy to be honest. But anyways your comment reminds me of that skit on key and peel and he was actually in it. Where they need someone in the gang that’s “loco.” Lol and they bring this fool in

Met Richard years ago at Alamo City Comic-Con. I had to let him know how much of an inspiration he is to the Latino community. I'm a very shy introvert kinda person so I wish I could've held myself better but he is someone that I look up to much like Danny Trejo & many other Latino actors that made it.
Richard has always been a big part of why I stopped hanging with gangs & doing dumb shit. I saw his growth since I was 13 to now 25, through UA-cam, tv, movies, interviews. This dudes a real role model
What a straight up player. Man gets shot, takes the time out of his day… to show up in court for the man who shot him. Looks the man dead in the eyes and doesn’t snitch.
I can truly relate and feel his pain. Unfortunately my victim snitched and I did 10 years . 14 to 24 years old. YA to the pin. Definitely changed my life. I would be dead if not for that experience.
I live in the Netherlands, in a safe neighborhood, nice house, with a loving family and friends. I have a job and honestly I sometimes think I live quite a boring (read: spoilt?) same-day-every-day life. With all the empathetic qualities I own, I CAN’T even remotely feel how life over there must be like. Or how it has come to that point. Truly, with all respect and many may say the total opposite, but the life he describes sounds like hell to me.
Fax Hell on Earth 🌍 Our country is going to shet , School shooting,. Mass shootings, gang killings , police killings , everyone killing each other , Why ? Because People are Crazy and Brain 🧠 wash ( hypnotized) . Feel like Lucifer (Satan ) has Won and it's probably just gonna get worse.

Richard is one of the realest dudes out here changing his life for the better, telling his story and he’s one of the most underrated actors. He is a true artist, I’m so grateful I found out about him through his music back in the day. As a young Chicano, I feel so proud to see this. Thank you Jon, Thank you Richard!
he's geeked..

East Los isn't that bad. El Sereno is worse. You need to watch your step in Sereno.

I had feeling he did there was just an authenticity to him
Most of the cast had really hard lives doing prison time and running with gangs that’s why they casted them for Mayans
Probably one of the best interviews ive ever seen. It felt like i was there, and the emotion behind it lets you know that its 100% real. I think He was reliving it as he told it. Its amazing to see how richard has grown since his rapping days.

Congratulations, you have had one hell of a journey and it is absolutely awesome that you are helping people as you do now. You are awesome. 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉

Now I have my own family in omaha nebraska and I still have family all about that life and I'm grateful for my mom and dad for getting me out.
