Man seeing those tears hurts. I remember going to a counselors meeting with my mom in high school and she told me the reason I was being a knucklehead was because I hadn’t dealt with my brother’s passing(who passed away 2 years prior) and I remember crying in front of my mom about it but she was a drug addict herself so she couldn’t help me. Sometimes you find family in the streets and in the streets you find more trauma, I never thought I’d live past 25 but here I am at 31 still striving. For anyone who hasn’t found a positive way to heal that trauma keep going, I promise you it gets easier
Thank you for these words. And yes, it does get easier.
Nah my bro also passed. Shi ain't sweet no mo

I love that he lets his guest talk and doesn’t just talk about irrelevant stuff like most podcast hosts do. He actually shows that he wants to hear their story. He makes the podcast about the guest and not about his own agenda.
I agree but alot of times the guest isn't a good story teller / talker
Because if he interrupted this guy he'd get murdered
@@madmanjack6923 maybe back when he was still affiliated and still being a criminal. But he’s not anymore.
This guest was so god damn cringe
@@tommymc7535 Do you even know who he is? Nothing cringe about this interview or guest.
You can see his sadness, but also how excited he gets reliving those moments is also kind of heart breaking.
Shame on you. The man spoke his truth and all you think about is him breaking again. Prayers to you lost soul.
It’s not necessarily excitement it’s more like nervousness like reliving something you can’t believe you did and no way to cope but to realize you can’t change what you did
@@andresj361 What are you on about? No one said he broke again, don’t project your negativity on me in your wrongful assumptions.
Some people have a hard time expressing things they regret or things they didn’t wanna do but had to, adding a humor can help people cope because sometimes saying it raw will bring you to tears
Idgaf what any of you say, any former addict will agree with me when i say, when you start reminiscing about your past and all the things you did good and the bad, you get the feeling of excitement/euphoria in the moment. That IS NOT A BAD THING. It is a bad thing if you let that feeling consume you. And lead you back. In recovery you learn so many ways to cope with that, but you saying its sad that hes showing excitement is wrong. So yeah, shame on you. This man has lived a life SO MANY PEOPLE just speculate and make assumptions about, and he lived to tell the tale. And not only live but to MAKE SOMETHING of himself as well. So take your negativeness to the next video on your list. Thanks.
This has to be one of the realist interviews that I've seen. At age 16 I was incarcerated and sentenced to 20 years to life for a gang related murder. I've been home for almost 7 years and every day is a blessing.

There's a miracle in the opposition this man experienced. Opposition in all things, ying and yang, good and evil are some ways to experience growth. Looking into that man's eyes you could see the struggle/opposition but the touching part for me was he spoke truth. That's a starting point for change that ultimately will lead to a more positive happier life. The miracle is change through a necessary challenging struggle. Had he not had those negative experiences when he spoke he wouldn't have spoke truth to us and would be a hypocrite. Opposition in all things is necessary for growth. The sadness leads to a choice for a happier life
Not feeling bad they chose that lifestyle

Richard deserves his own channel and podcast... There's way too many fake Chicano personas on UA-cam now speaking on gangs and youth.
You a hundred percent right about that. I grew up just next door in the Boyle Heights area & ended up at Homeboy Industries after my term just like he did. Stories like Richards is one of the things that motivated me to get out of all of it and make something of myself. Homeboy was my first job and now all these years later I work at a hospital & most people don’t have any idea were I came from or the life I used to live. Also your right about the UA-cam thing. I wouldn’t say it’s exclusive to chicanos it’s honestly kind of the whole gang culture/prison influencer lane that’s kinda wack. I'm a first generation ex-con. I grew up in the System. In a foster home 10 days before my sixth birthday. 1973. From there I went from group homes to Juvie at 11 years old. 3 days later I'd be released to another foster home. I'd eventually go to Juvie and be released at the age of 19 into the care of Adult Probation. My official parole date is October 10, 2017. I got out of prison 2006. I was a ward of the state of Alaska for 44 years. Since the age of 16 I hadn't seen the streets more than 3 months at a time. Two months after my 18th birthday I escaped from Juvie. I was charged as an adult. Car thefts and selling to chop shops was my deal as a teen, until I went away at the age of 20 for theft. I escaped again and committed armed robbery. I received a 29 year sentence. I educated myself and became a prisoner mentor. I tutored over 400 prisoners between 1998 to 2006 in a private prison in Florence Arizona. I got out and worked, finally in 2015 I became a firefighter/EMT in Alaska. I received calls from 911 dispatch at home.
Congratulations, you have had one hell of a journey and it is absolutely awesome that you are helping people as you do now. You are awesome. 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉
Back in I think 2008 Canada introduced new public smoking regulations, which also included prisons. Matsqui Penitentiary hired me initially to take over the work the inmates would normally have done, but they were all on strike and refused to leave their cells. Eventually they returned to the prison shop, and my role shifted to babysitter, basically. But it gave me the opportunity to get to know some of these guys, and learn their stories, how they ended up in prison.
What I learned was, I was no different than most of these guys. I never killed anyone before, but I definitely did some stupid shit when I was young. The only difference between me and most of those guys was that they got caught, and I didn’t. Period.
This life is given to us so that we can fck up, act badly sometimes, but then hopefully learn some tough lessons and become better people because of it. Sounds like you did exactly that. Peace brother.
