Johnny Carson truly loved talking to people from all walks of life. He treated everyone the same even the children who came on his show, all were treated courteously and with respect. He could talk about anything and he was so smart. A cut above all talk show hosts who came after him. Miss him.
Legends chatting about legends. A bygone era.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Ms Becall back in 1981 when I was only 18 years old. It was at Jo Allen's restaurant in London. I was introduced to her and I was spellbound by her. She was gracious to me and very kind. On parting, I even kissed her hand. She must of thought, who does this kid think I am, the bloody Queen?? RIP lady, you were great.
Yeah, she was great at screwing around with a married man..
I miss Joe Allen, what an amazing place that was. An old school showbiz burger & fries joint, where the fans could rub shoulders with the stars. How sad it shut down and moved location from Exeter Street to nearby Burleigh Street a few years ago. The owners claimed it was a 'brick by brick' transfer that retained the soul of Joe Allen. But it will never be the same - how can it be, it's no longer a basement dive!
Its heyday was the 'seventies and 'eighties, opened in 1977 as a sister restaurant to its 1965 launched, New York original, it was the must-visit London haunt for visiting US stars.
How I would love to have been there when a middle aged Elizabeth Taylor entered with her entourage and crossed the floor to a secluded table. They say no one bothered her for autographs, that was the kind of place it was. And if a member of the public did have an encounter with a big star who'd dropped by for a midnight burger, they were respectful, as you were.
I met and chatted with a few lovely British stars there over the years, but no American superstars like Miss Bacall, sadly! Thank you for sharing your story. In 1981 her movie 'The Fan' was released, a dark slasher film about an ageing star pursued by a psychotic stalker. She was 57 - maybe she was in London promoting it? I saw it on 'Talking Pictures TV' last week, it was cheesy and entertaining in equal measure!
How lovely that the legendary Lauren Bacall gave you a memory of her to treasure forever. Joe Allen himself died in February of this year. His vision of a 'theatrical canteen' has endured in America and England for many decades. Alas the relocated London Joe Allen is closed due to Covid - let's hope the pandemic doesn't finish it off!
@@dboboc What a snide, silly comment! Lauren Bacall was 19 when she met and fell in love with 44 year old Bogart. He was in his third unhappy marriage, to a fellow actor and alcoholic. Their fights were so legendary, they were known as 'The battling Bogarts'.
Lauren was the young model in her first acting role in 'To Have and Have Not'. Bacall and Bogart fell in love - what can I tell you, it happens! Do you think people should stay in unhappy marriages forever? Bogart fought the attraction to Bacall, and repeatedly left and returned to his wife through loyalty. But the love was gone. He finally divorced her and married Lauren - or Betty, her real name and the one he used for her - when she was 20 and he 45.
Bogart was childless before he met Bacall, so no family was broken up. He went on to have his only children with her, a son and a daughter, and 11 happy years of marriage before he tragically died of cancer.
He was without doubt the love of Lauren's life, she had put her acting career on hold to be his wife and mother to his children. She came on set with him and endured the heat and mosquitoes when he made 'The African Queen'.
"He kidded that a woman's place was in the home, but he was only half kidding. He had divorced three actresses, and was convinced that a career and marriage don't mix".
She nursed him through his horrible, final decline from esophagus cancer, which took his weight down to 80lbs. Lauren was a widow at 32, she paid a high price for her short marriage to a legend. And she knew her name would forever be overshadowed by Bogart's. But she had no regrets. "Bogie's death was devastating, but I had my two young children to focus on, So I had something constructive to think of".
In 2011 she told Vanity Fair: "My obit is going to be full of Bogart, I'm sure". Yet she appreciated her good fortune in meeting him, saying: "I was so lucky when I was young. What happened to me then, sometimes happens to people when they're older. And sometimes never happens. So I feel lucky that I had it at all".

@@glamdolly30 This is the internet, where famous public figures get judged. I think it was less than classy to screw with Sinatra as bedridden Bogie coasted toward the inevitable. She has always maintained her affair with Frank began after Bogie died, but what they did was no particular secret in Hollywood at the time. I believe she could have waited.

I absolutely think shes marveloys! I started paying attention to her work when my mother, who was about her age, said Betty Bacall was her favorite actress and To Have and Have Not was her favorite movie.
I love Lauren Bacall. I am a lifelong fan of hers. I saw her onstage in three plays and I got to meet her and she kindly posed for a photo with me. I felt very sad when she passed away.

Great actress and loved her comedic performance as Schatze Page in How To Marry A Millionaire. One of my all time favorite movies. RIP Ms. Bacall. Thanks for the great memories!

Uh, not so sure about Natalie. Rita Moreno claimed that Natalie was a bit of a diva on West Side Story. She apparently wanted her beau Warren Beatty to play Tony and would not let it slide that they cast Richard Beymer instead.

I love these clips. I was born in 1970 and was a teen in the 80's. I loved Johnny and staying up to watch the show not really knowing the guests but knew they were legends of the past and I loved them. Now looking back at 53 years old, I am putting the pieces together of the legends and adore them all! Thank you Johnny for your show and preserving the golden age of Hollywood!

Johnny Carson was such an intelligent man and a masterful interviewer. He allowed his guests to talk about their past experiences without interruption. Guests didn't have to perform stupid skits or endlessly plug their movies.

@@basilbcf I think that, more than anything, says it best. I grew up in the era of the original SNL and others and when they did political jokes, they made fun of pretty much everyone. If you did or said something they thought was stupid or funny, they made fun of it. Now it's just another mouthpiece for only one side of the political arena, is boring and predictable. No one has the brass to actually be funny because they're all to scared to be and too competitive to see who can be the most "woke." Can't hold a candle to people like this.

Some years ago a friend and I were cutting through an alley in NYC near the Dakota where Bacall lived and we ran into her taking a smoke break. My friend knew her immediately from his interior design work but it took me a minute to actually recognize her. I was overcome with both joy and embarrassment and she paused and asked if I was feeling okay. I don’t even recall what I said at the time. I replayed that event over and over in my head and I so wish I had reached out and kissed her hand but that sadly didn’t happen.
You had a normal reaction. And, she might not have been so keen on having her hand kissed. The interaction went as it should have, I think.
Lauren Bacall wrote in that John Houston would go hunting in Africa. . Bogart would refuse to go hunting, he . Thank you Humphrey Bogart, No wonder I love you so much.

She was my favorite actress from that era (although there are others I love, too) and she seems like she was so fun, too. And I just realized that my childhood neighbor, a really outgoing older lady who was a lifelong smoker, sounded exactly like her!
I saw her once on the steps of a Broadway theater (not performing) and it was thrilling!
I did not know Lauren Bacall had passed til I read OLegendStudios comment about the greats we have lost. I googled her name and found out she died today. I am truly saddened and slightly heart broken. I am 52 and have been a big fan of Ms. Bacall's since I first saw "To Have And Have Not" when I was about 6 or 7. When the AFI named her 20th. They put Mae West,Shirley Temple, Marilyn Monroe and Ginger Rogers above her. This to me was a tremendous mistake and I wrote the AFI and told them so. Not to take anything from these women but even though they deserved to be on the list, just not above Lauren. Anyway I will probably spend this weekend watching her movies and saying "God Bless Lauren Bacall" and Thank God we had her for 89 years. God Speed Lauren you will be remembered very fondly for generations to come.

I'm in my 20s and i love watching old movies and learning about their actors because I'm infatuated by their elegance both men and women, i feel very comfortable with old cinema and I keep learning about various actors, this time it being this lady.
Lol. Thats awesome. I just watched The African Queen and now i am watching a bunch of related vids and this came up. I love UA-cam, lol!
The stories of making the African Queen are all true…and incredibly taxing on cast and crew….Bacall was about 26 and took on the role of cook, nurse, cleaner, counsellor …she was amazing…. The drinking buddies never got sick because they avoided the water. Everyone else was sick from the water.
I love that she just went with them for kicks, wasn't even in the movie

Noone was ever as smooth as Carson..... When I was a youngster, I would sneak out of bed and stand quietly behind my parents as they watched The Tonight Show...... I would sometimes have my hand over my mouth with tears rolling down my cheeks stifling my laughter. It would have been bad to have been caught by mom and dad. But, I got away with it......
Many years later, mom told me they knew I was there but they ignored me.
Carson was one of a kind.....
