  • A day after an 11-inning win in the opener of the '79 NL Championship Series, the Cincinnati Reds again host the Pittsburgh Pirates in a Game Two matinee. Pirates skipper Chuck Tanner selected right-hander Jim Bibby as his starter. Bibby had enjoyed a good year in a dual starter-reliever role, winning twelve games and losing 4, with an ERA of 2.81. Meanwhile, Cincinnati manager John McNamara gave the nod to 22-year-old Frank Pastore, who finished the regular season with a mark of 6-7 and a 4.25 ERA, in this must-win game before a Wednesday afternoon crowd of around 55,000. The best-of-five series moves to Pittsburgh after this.
Although the game was televised nationally over NBC-TV, this is the local KDKA-TV broadcast with Pirates announcers Milo Hamilton, Lanny Frattare, and Nellie Briles. (Local radio and TV broadcasts of MLB’s League Championship Series were permitted in 1979).

Jim Bibby was an excellent pitcher in that era, and he was highly productive in the postseason despite a record of 0-0. He pitched a no-hitter six years earlier with the Rangers, was an All-Star the next year, and recorded 26 consecutive outs in a game after a leadoff single the following season, which does not count as a perfect game but has a similar effect.
Nonetheless, he may be known more for the sporting exploits of his relatives: brother Henry and nephew Mike, both professional basketball players who as amateurs won NCAA University Division/Division I national championships, Henry with UCLA and Mike with Arizona.
A very productive family indeed. May Jim Bibby rest in peace.

I was born in 1970. Pretty decent memory too. I don't remember ANY Giant Eagle at ALL where I lived. None. Didn't hear or see them until the 90's, late 90's. Did they have "fuel perks" in the 70's too, lol...or did that come later as well, like their existence in my eyes? 🤬

It’s weird that Lanny only went 3 innings. He was the voice of the Pirates for so long through 2008.

Back in the day, when games were televised, the lead guy did the first three and last three on television, and the middle three on radio. If you were on radio, you did the reverse. First three and last three on radio, middle three on television.

I like how, during the fourth inning, these prescient announcers predicted the success of the Star Wars film franchise. "Hey fans, how about that 'Star Wars' that came out a couple of years ago in 1977, huh? Holy beep boops! Monster box office. You know I called up that director George Lucas. Yep. I did. Pitch outside to Moreno. Count is one-and-oh. So I said, 'George, I have $1,200 burning a hole in my pocket. How about I give it to you as an investment in another one of them Star Wars movies, huh? Yeah! Next one could open on an icy planet somewhere. You get a small, green alien-like mentor in there who can actually kick major heiny. But everyone underestimates him because of a severe over obsession with size. Now by the end of this thing, the Empire get to uh ..um... well. Okay using a baseball term , the Empire strikes back.' Yeah. Pitch outside to Moreno, Count now two-and-oh. Slow-moving game. And then I told George, 'So, George, we keep making these movies see? And the power goes back and forth. Bad guys seem to come out on top by the end of some films. But the rebels come out winners in other films. Bunch of teenagers blow up the Death Star. That kind of thing, George'. And George listened. Ball fouled off by Moreno. Count now two-and-one. Moreno calls time and steps out of the box. Getting back to this Star Wars thing, I tell George to let some other people direct now and then. And big breaks. Build some breaks of time between releasing these films in groups of three. You know. Release this 'Empire Strikes Back' thing next year. Then one more three years later. Then ... oh next pitch outside. Three-and-one to Omar Moreno. Man feels like Moreno has been at-bat for years. He needs a sequel to this at-bat. Anyway, back to my Star Wars story. So I advise George Lucas to release these films in clusters of three. Fans like that. Not sure why. Speaking of three, pitch on the side corner. Full count to Moreno, Three-and-two, the count. So I tell George to wait until the mid to late 1990s to release three more films. Why? Because it's the right thing to do. Ball four. Moreno is on. Likes to steal bases. Reds will need to keep an eye on him. So then after releasing three more films in the late 1990s, really make the fans wait. And build momentum. And give a bunch of British actors a chance to be in the next films ... oh, just spit-balling here. But 2010s seems like a good time. Holy kyber crystals! This game is so slow! Anyway, got some of my own duckts invested in this thing. So we'll see what happens. Garner pops it up. Caught. End of the inning. One-one tie. May the Force be with you and some super sweet residual payments be mine!"
