This made me think of when I was younger and over the summer I’d forget to brush for weeks at a time because I didn’t have a consistent routine in the morning/afternoon, it wasn’t until I got braces that I actually got good at brushing
Well thing is if people did the same just 10 years back they would've had terrible dental health, but nowadays the goverment puts a lot of fluorid in even water and even in some drinks that helps against cavities and plaque development. It's a tendency nowadays to just rinse mouth with chlorhexadine. Ps.I do recommend brushing, flossing, rinsing, and using a tongue brush PPs. Dental studen myself :D
When I kiss a girl I tell her to put her tongue in my mouth and wiggle it around as that's my fetish, that's how I keep my teeth and gums healthy without brushing.

You'll be dirty and stinky, plus if you get a cut or something you'll have a higher chance of infection because of all the dirt and bacteria on your body.
A question for dentists or anyone: I used to not brush my teeth, at all. I almost never even brushed my teeth for over 5 years or so during my early teenage years (probably just once every few months when it was time to go to the dentist, dark times indeed) yet never have any dental problem whatsoever except bad breath and yellow teeth. How did I survive that?
That’s a great question I want answered. I vividly remember not brushing my teeth for days or only once a week when I was a 11-12. Only started brushing seriously when I saw this video. I had cavities on my baby teeth, and nothing big on my permanent teeth thankfully.
While not brushing your teeth isn't advisable, what's described in this video is worst case scenario and seriously overestimates the possible dangers. Just think about it logically...there are many, many people on this planet that do not brush their teeth regularly or even at all as they can't afford/don't have access to dental hygiene products or even clean water. Billions of people live in poverty. While people in developed first world countries generally have better dental health, if this video were true all impoverished third world citizens would have terrible teeth or none at all, which isn't the case. In fact while in more remote areas of Central America I've met people who've rarely ever brushed their teeth, and they looked just fine. I've also either watched videos or seen pictures of people with literally nothing in places like Sub-Saharan Africa or Southeast Asia and some of them have the whitest teeth you could imagine. Of course these people also eat WAY less sugar than we do over here in the first world, but still. This video is blowing it out of proportion. If you do eat a lot of sugar though or drink coffee, smoke cigarettes, etc. you definitely don't want to skip out on brushing teeth regularly.
they do brush their teeth. Just not with conventional toothbrushes. There's a tree whose branches are used as a toothbrush in those areas, also known as a miswak.
I think its more likely connected to your immune system than to what you eat. For example, I have perfect teeth (As I've been told by my dentist), but I only brush once a week, and my diet is nothing but sugar and carbs. (Working on that.) Regardless, I've never had a cavity my whole life, even though I eat junk all day. What leads me to believe its more so about your immune system is that I have an abnormally high level of white blood cells all of the time. I haven't been sick in about 12-ish years, and even when my family is sick and we share cups, I never get any symptoms. The video hinted that the immune system will attack the gums, but I think the immune system probably attacks these bacteria regularly and in my case, they just do a better job of it than the average person. I still recommend everyone brush their teeth, for sure, but I also know that the science around brushing teeth isn't fully explored, its more of a "trial and error- Let's stick with what we think works" kind of business at this point. But what do I know. I'm not a dentist.

If you stop the build up of bacteria, the damage the few survivors do to your teeth will become insignificant. Health's about managing your body's microbiome. There's more to you than just _you,_ y'know?
Is it possible for your immune system to adapt and make some sort of thing that would resault for making your teeth 44,44% stronger and immune to bacteria
@-Apollo - what for? My dentist has no problems with it. Don't have bad breath or plaque build up. And no cavities in over 10 years. Staying away from sugar can do wonders for your gum/teeth health
Wow dude. Not gonna lie usually I only brush at night, and even some days I forget to do that. You really do help me to realize I need to start brushing more so thank you so much!
Through a period of severe depression and not taking care of myself I've gone over a year without brushing my teeth but they were relatively fine compared to this video. One of my teeth was severely eaten up and a few others were fairly bad as well but in general it only took about 2 caps a big filling and a couple smaller fillings to fix it. I think there are a lot more variables than just time gone without brushing that affect it which is maybe why mine were nowhere near THAT bad.
Same, when i was a kid, i refused to brush my teeth AT ALL COST. I don’t remember how long but to the point where my gums started bleeding. I went to the dentist and they just told me to floss and use mouthwash. It got better but didn’t healed completely. So, brush your teeth if you don’t wanna have significantly bad breaths, yellow teeth and randomly tastes blood any second. (oh yeah and your gums will be weaker and your teeth will have a higher chance of falling out in higher pressure)
It's not just sugar, it's a mix between the diet (high in carbs AND sugar), hygiene, amount of saliva, water, immune system, and even other conditions as diabetes. The progression of cavities, gingivitis and periodontitis is the result of a imbalance between all the factors
I brush my teeth when I get up in the morning to use the bathroom. And then I'll brush them again before I go to bed. I've been doing it faithfully since I was 4 years old. I'm 25 now.

Dentist here. Surprised to see many people weren't educated and I appreciate AsapScience for good information. For the general public this video is informative. Not brushing your teeth leads to bad oral health and bad oral health can affect general health. But for you and others who wants to know more in detail, you have some wrong information or at least it is different from what I was taught. Bacteria that cause tooth decay and bacteria that cause gingivitis and bacteria that cause periodontitis are all different. Poor oral hygiene can lead to tooth decay and/or gingivitis and/or periodontitis. They are not sequential and not completely related to each other as you state. S. mutans are causing tooth decay, P. intermedia and others are causing gingivitis and Red Complex bacteria are causing periodontitis. Just a little detail for your own knowledge. In the end, please brush your teeth and FLOSS.
Even serious channels like this have started spreading so much misinformation that I seriously consider stopping getting info from youtube. This catastrophic series of events of not brushing your teeth is pure garbage and does definitely not happen in general.

NOBODY KNOWS WHAT ITS LIKE TO HAVE YOUR SMILE TAKEN FROM YOU AND INSTEAD OF JOY, EVERY SMILE I AM PUBLICLY HUMILIATED AND IT KILLS ME BECAUSE ITS NOT MY FAULT!
this all depends on your diet, water intake, immune system, and genes. some people can go years without brushing and be fine, while some can brush their whole life and have awful teeth. this isn't saying that brushing isnt a good predictor of healthy teeth, but it's weird of them to talk as if there's a 1:1 correlation between not brushing and having bad teeth.
Angel Moya my dad’s 50. Due to low income and living in a third world country, he didn’t know brushing your teeth was a thing until he was 25. Never had a single cavity and still has all his teeth
My dad's 55, and he grew up in a tiny village in China (my dad said his village was basically the poorest tier of China at the time) and he didn't know brushing teeth was a thing until he went to university. He and his siblings all grew up malnourished and qualified as that until he was maybe 15, to the point where his legs didn't develop properly as a child. Despite this, he said that he never heard about anyone below the age of 30 getting cavities or losing teeth ever. Based on that I personally think diet is a huge factor, as anything more sugary than non-sweet corn and anything processed was extremely rare. TL;DR My dad was malnourished as a child and didn't really have anything sugary or processed so noticeably bad dental health didn't exist in his village.
I haven’t brushed in years because of a sensitivity to toothpaste and I have never had a cavity. My family doesn’t have enough money to afford frequent dentist appointments anymore. My mom is 36 and has to brush constantly and she still no longer has any of her top teeth. It all depends on your diet and sugar intake. I’m a vegetarian, the only one in my family, and I’ve been trying to cut down on my sugar intake for a while now.
That’s not how teeth work. Your diet will determine the health and strength of your teeth. Brushing your teeth is to clean and protect yourself from your own dietary habits which have become terrible in today’s world.
NE H Aye well excuse me for working in dentistry and understanding that already. But nobody is safe from chemicals in food, so brush ya damn teeth. 😷😷😷😷

If your cousin is still a toddler or prepubescent teen, he or she might have just cycled through his or her so called "milk teeth" which are usually the first set of teeth that humans get. It will then be replaced by the permanent teeth which dont grow back if damaged in most cases. But if your cousin is old and has worn down their milk teeth, then yeah its probably poor dental hygiene.
Its funny I got out of the habbit of brush,g my teeth last 2 months like the entire month literally nothing happened and I'm back to it now but yeah no one realized I wasent brushing them and I don't talk much so no one could smell my breath also I chew a gotta gum lol oof
My Story About Not Brushing: I went 25 years without brushing my teeth (Don't mean to sound disgusting but it's the truth) and i have had none of that at all not even bad breath. I only started brushing my teeth after getting a little toothache and sensitivity on a few teeth while eating sweet things such as chocolate (I did need to use a soft bristle brush when i started brushing though due to never doing it before). My mouth feels nice and clean since i started brushing them but not much else has changed. (I have no black marks or cavities that i know of or anything of that nature, my teeth are slightly stained due to large amounts of cigarettes and tea but brushing hasn't really helped that much.)
Hate to admit it but same here, I'd say 15 years tho, maybe brushing them once a year before the dentist. No bad breath, a bit yellow, and 4 fillings. I'm expecting problems to arise eventually but I'll just have them ripped out and put some fake ones in.
Sorry but thats ridiculous, when I used to be on a raw diet in the past I never needed to brush and my teeth were totally fine...come on how do you think that our ancestors managed?
Yeah that what i was thinking about .. our ciliva tounge and iner lips are more than enough to clean our teath .. but with the modern high sugar and protin foods we have to use a brush ..
Close friend of mine hasn’t brushed his for about 20 years. He’s had literally none of this ever happen outside of occasional bad breath but uses mints for that at times I know gross but his teeth are in quite good condition otherwise. Especially knowing he runs a chocolate factory
This video is completely counter productive. It is well known that scare tactics don't work and only lead to people not trusting the important information you do say.
if you stopped brushing your teeth but also stopped eating any sugar then the effects wouldn´t quite be the same though. The affects of not brushing your teeth also depend on your diet.
I haven't brushed my teeth in a decade, I'm 25 now. Two minor cavities filled, zero bad breath, slight yellowing. I've had a few minor toothaches come and go. Dental recalcification is a thing. Enamel can maintain and repair itself with good diet.
Yea I was the same at 25, now I'm nearly 35 and in the last 2 years they suddenly went down hill fast. No other changes just my age. Diet and everything else is still the same. Studies have shown that past 28 to 30 it starts to become an issue as the polar bonds in the calcium ions break down more easily and are much harder to reform. Just a heads up from someone who is further down the same path, do with as you will.
Brush your teeth people not just kids. I'VE GOT A BURNING QUESTION! Whats the difference between those who can sing and those who can't? (Mga sintunado in Filipino, idk the term in english) because like all of my friends can and its like soooo embarrassing its only me that doesn't sing in karaoke (kj ko daw ahahah) PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION :))
shly _xo Hello. I’m not ASAP Science, but I am a singer, so I’ll answer as best as I can. Anyone can sing, it’s just a matter of doing it properly. See, a common misconception is that singing is easy, when it’s actually very challenging. If you’re doing it right, you should be using your entire body to make a nice sound. Your friends who can sing probably take some sort of voice lesson or something if they can sing properly. If they don’t take any lessons or anything, they probably just have a naturally nice voice. Even then, they probably aren’t singing properly unless they’ve been trained to do so. It’s all about using your body to control the sound. Hope this helps :)
@@aestherielle1524 Get vocal lessons so you can control and stabilize your voice and voice cracks. Also there are a lot of muscles in your mouth and tongue so it's easy to mess up.
Alright So my friend have been brushing his teeth twice or trice a year with active charcoal for almost four years now and he seems fine. No holes, no cancer How would you explain that?
Yeah, I'll add that I've brushed my teeth very sporadically for the past 7 or so years with no major ill-effects. Before you ask what's so hard about it, or say it's gross, I know. The issue is that when you're too depressed to want to live in the first place, taking care of your teeth is the last thing on your mind.
I've been brushing my teeth twice a day for a few months now, but before that, I never brushed my teeth and I was fine health-wise. Aesthetically, my teeth were yellow, but I never experienced pain or any actual medical conditions. So, yeah. I had gone years without brushing and all that happened was my teeth got yellow.
When I was a child my parents weren't very strict about me brushing my teeth. When I was 10 I went to the dentist to fill in the parts of my teeth that must have been eaten away. After that I got into dental hygiene, and even more so at 15 when I had braces. But my dentist told me I had gingivitis around that time, and told me brushing more would solve it. I've since then had two root canals and I'm afraid another tooth might be dying. My retainer brings me immense pain each night and my gums still bleed. I'm embarrassed about the yellow of my teeth, and I know whitening them can make them even more sensitive. Sometimes I don't brush because I feel like it doesn't make any long term difference for me. The plaque is removed but I still have yellow teeth and bleeding gums. I wonder if toothpaste companies lie to sell their products. I'm really tired of trying. I'm only 20, and I'm worried I might not have teeth when I grow old. On cold days the pain in my teeth can be unbearable. I wish I was as lucky as some of you guys.
This is so hard for me because of my lack of motivation and lack of self care that my really cool mental illness feeds ;-; I'm trying so hard to stay consistent
I brush my teeth twice daily, yet I ended up having nine cavities and one fallen tooth. However, there's people who spent years without brushing their teeth and have a perfect smile and no cavities. How do they do it?
Don't give in, eventually it will disappear. Get healthy snacks/foods. Eat proper filling meals. Drink loads of water. And what helped me was looking at packages, seeing te calories and the macros too. And like think. "How much of this, can i only eat and have all the calories/thing allowed for the day" cause when you stop and think about how bad it is, you either eat a bit less, or for me sometimes the craving just goes/prevents another craving from happening later.
Awwww, best of luck to you my love!! I know exactly how you’re feeling and how fed up you are. You have the power!!! It’s all within you!! What helps me is to drink iced unsweetened green tea which is proven to help with cravings. What also helps me is to know that EVERYONE has a side to them that’s constantly saying “eat those donuts, chips, etc,” and they chose to ignore it. If everyone else can do it, you can too!!! Best of luck to you, sending you positive vibes my dear! :)
rekhaben Patel a bit of willpower for a short amount of time, once you haven’t had it in a while you’ll stop craving it, same with eating less/eating differently
strange enough, during the pandemic I didn't brush my teeth for 8 months (I know...) I then had a dentist appointment and had no cavities and they said my gums were extremely healthy
That proves my point too that you can not brush them and have healthy teeth. I also didn’t brush for a few months and the dentist said my teeth were good👍🏻
I used to never brush when I was younger. I would out kid go months without brushing and my teeth were absolutely fine. After I started taking care again, I cant go even three days without my mouth feeling gross
This feels like a list of the extremes, as I haven't had any of the serious ones happen to me.(27) Very minimal amount of cavities. But I will add that my father started losing/getting holes in his teeth from as long as I can remember(he is now lacking most.).
Thanks to all the comments about people with depression who haven't brushed in a very long time. I know we should all brush our teeth but it helps knowing I'm not alone.
My roommates liquid or choice is Mountain Dew, he eats pizza and junk all the time, rarely seems to brush his teeth, and to the best of my knowledge, he’s never had a cavity. I eat healthy, exercise, drink gallons of water a day, and brush twice a day plus floss after every meal and use flourish mouthwash (and I’ve been like this for years) and last time I was at the dentist, my hygienist told me I have SIX DIFFERENT SPOTS TO KEEP AN EYE ON. This made me think of when I was younger and over the summer I’d forget to brush for weeks at a time because I didn’t have a consistent routine in the morning/afternoon, it wasn’t until I got braces that I actually got good at brushing
This scared me into brushing my teeth
a lot of people in the comments saying they haven’t brushed their teeth in months/years...HUH?? is this normal for y’all?? WHAT??? lmao
Well thing is if people did the same just 10 years back they would've had terrible dental health, but nowadays the goverment puts a lot of fluorid in even water and even in some drinks that helps against cavities and plaque development. It's a tendency nowadays to just rinse mouth with chlorhexadine.
Ps.I do recommend brushing, flossing, rinsing, and using a tongue brush

A question for dentists or anyone: I used to not brush my teeth, at all. I almost never even brushed my teeth for over 5 years or so during my early teenage years (probably just once every few months when it was time to go to the dentist, dark times indeed) yet never have any dental problem whatsoever except bad breath and yellow teeth. How did I survive that?
That’s a great question I want answered. I vividly remember not brushing my teeth for days or only once a week when I was a 11-12. Only started brushing seriously when I saw this video. I had cavities on my baby teeth, and nothing big on my permanent teeth thankfully.
you probably preserved your teeth by drinking water, which kept your mouth wet and prevented more buildup of tartar and plaque.
THE ILLUSTRATIONS AREN'T HELPING MAN!!!
Two smart people, FIGHT
@Anon Ymous, i too recall reports on some native populations not brushing yet having healthy teeth. this video by nutritionfacts.org mentions that and is also pretty interesting overall ua-cam.com/video/fLat2Im_R84/v-deo.html

I’ve dealt with depression and there was a period where I wasn’t brushing my teeth for months at a time.
Same depression is horrible. Didn’t brush my hair in 2 months and I had to brush it for a hour
(oh yeah and your gums will be weaker and your teeth will have a higher chance of falling out in higher pressure)
hmm so the problem is the sugar right?
It's not just sugar, it's a mix between the diet (high in carbs AND sugar), hygiene, amount of saliva, water, immune system, and even other conditions as diabetes. The progression of cavities, gingivitis and periodontitis is the result of a imbalance between all the factors
eating rotting meat instead doesnt make it better though

In the end, please brush your teeth and FLOSS.

this all depends on your diet, water intake, immune system, and genes. some people can go years without brushing and be fine, while some can brush their whole life and have awful teeth. this isn't saying that brushing isnt a good predictor of healthy teeth, but it's weird of them to talk as if there's a 1:1 correlation between not brushing and having bad teeth.
Angel Moya my dad’s 50. Due to low income and living in a third world country, he didn’t know brushing your teeth was a thing until he was 25. Never had a single cavity and still has all his teeth
Absolutely possible to not brush teeth and be fine. It depends on a variety of factors. Totally sane
My siblings breathe and get cavities, my mom's side has bad teeth which explain that sort of.
All these people talking about not brushing their teeth 🤢🤢🤢🤢 See you in 20 Years when you have dentures.
That’s not how teeth work. Your diet will determine the health and strength of your teeth. Brushing your teeth is to clean and protect yourself from your own dietary habits which have become terrible in today’s world.

My Story About Not Brushing:
I went 25 years without brushing my teeth (Don't mean to sound disgusting but it's the truth) and i have had none of that at all not even bad breath.
I want this to be true

if you stopped brushing your teeth but also stopped eating any sugar then the effects wouldn´t quite be the same though. The affects of not brushing your teeth also depend on your diet.
This makes me want to brush my teeth for the rest of eternity, casually never stopping

Whats his deit. Also some people have better gentics then other causing them not to have problems like that
Yeah, I'll add that I've brushed my teeth very sporadically for the past 7 or so years with no major ill-effects. Before you ask what's so hard about it, or say it's gross, I know. The issue is that when you're too depressed to want to live in the first place, taking care of your teeth is the last thing on your mind.
Hope you are doing fine
I've been brushing my teeth twice a day for a few months now, but before that, I never brushed my teeth and I was fine health-wise.

WHAT. DOES ANYBODY UNDERSTAND.
Way ahead of you pal.Hey kids...don't stop brushing!
Yesterday, I went to the Ontario Science Centre and they were playing your pi song! It was such a coincidence that I knew u guys and they were playing ur song!
