I am proud to be a dentist. My recommendations are: 1- Monitor your sugar intake . 2- Brushing your teeth at night is the most crucial element for a healthy, functioning teeth or at the least rinse with water/mouthwash.
1- Flossing is used mostly to get rid off the food debris between the teeth which can cause caries and gingivitis. Some people will be more susceptible to caries rather than gingivitis. It depends on the type of food you eat, whether it's sugar or non-sugar food. 2- I always stress on the non-chemical approached to keep our teeth healthy. Brushing your teeth with the right technique specially at night is the key to a life-long healthy teeth. You can miss your day brushing but don't be lazy to brush them at night. Mouthwash can be added if you suffer from a long duration gum disease, if that the case, you have to see a local dentist. He probably will perform a procedure - of removing hard material that deposits on the teeth for a long time - called Scaling. Mouthwash will be prescribed after this procedure for 10 days only, so whether it's alcoholic or non-alcoholic it doesn't matter. Extra-advice: Clean the tongue with the brush or with a tongue scrapper which is better, because the tongue is mainly responsible for the bad smell at the morning. As food debris is broken down by the bacteria in the tongue to form a volatile compound causing this bad smell.

it's so hard nowadays to find foods low in processed sugars that it pisses me off. we blame individuals for not cutting down on sugar when we really need to put pressure on big companies to stop loading their food products with sugar.
I wanted to cut off sugar for weeks now but it's really hard when everything has sugar in it, like hot sauce, like seriously!? Why would you need sugar in hot sauce?
@@tanvikhare9710 I agree. Fruit has sugar, but if you rinse your mouth after eating it, (and brush and floss) that shouldn't be a problem. Some fruit like dates which are unusually sticky might require flossing and brushing right after eating them. Some fruit like citrus which is very acidic may soften enamel, so rinsing and then waiting an hour before brushing is recommended.

The video left out serious additional cause of tooth problems that is becoming more and more of a problem in recent years - acids from soft drinks, which soften or dissolve tooth enamel, and prevent normal teeth remineralization. No amount of fluoride can fight constant sipping of soft drinks due to it's sugar and acid content.
Pizaerable Please learn about Stephan curve! Brushing your teeth regularly, in the morning and before bed won't prevent acid attacs throughout the day, it will just lessen the effect of acids a bit. When you sip a coke, pH level inside your mouth drops below 3. There is no amount of fluoride in the world that will protect your teeth. Fluoride just lowers the pH level at which damage to your teeth starts. Bear in mind that brushing your teeth inside half an hour, or maybe even an hour after you got your sugary-acidic drink, will do more damage to your teeth than sugars and acids alone, since it will be easier for toothbrush and abrasives in your toothpaste to strip a layer of tooth enamel from your teth.
Blurryink Yes, it can somewhat lessen the damage, especially to your anterior teeth, but not nearly enough. And it will cause wrinkles around your mouth.
It's not the amount of Coca Cola you drink, it's the frequency... for example, it's better to guzzle the Coca Cola down quickly instead of sipping it throughout the span of 20-30 minutes. Every sip, no matter how large, causes the pH to lower, which encourages bacterial activity on your teeth for ~15 minutes. Basically... just drink it fast and swish some water afterwards and the Coca Cola won't wreck as much havoc. Still gotta brush and floss tho :p
I had super deep grooves in my molars, so whenever I brushed I wouldn't reach some parts of my tooth. I've gotten a lot of cavities the year after I got my braces off so those deep grooves were smoothed out and I haven't had issues with cavities since
Duude today i just discovered a teeny tiny tooth cavity... but thank God it's still in the outer layer (still didn't reach the nerves) gotta save my teeth!
not surprised, natural fluoride found in nature could help your teeth but whats in your toothpaste and water if fluoridated is not natural by any means. it industrial waist in the manufacture of fertilizer which does not help in any way. it actually weakens your teeth by replacing the calcium making your teeth brittle. i have cavities from when i was in middle school (candy junky) and although i didn't do much brushing then it did form like in your case in a period i was using toothpaste. sense then i don't use toothpaste and it hasn't gotten worse. i do recommend brushing you teeth but not with fluoride toothpaste or in my case toothpaste at all. look up fluoride poisoning images and look at the teeth. no matter how small you use that damage is still being caused, it's just slower and less noticeable in the lower doses.
For about the first 11 years of my life (I'm 13 right now) I didn't brush my teeth. I ate whatever I had and never got cavities. But, I did get a filling to prevent cavities on my molars, and due to me not eating or even liking sugary food until Halloween, the only time I would (and still do) eat candy or large amounts of sugar is during Halloween. And since I have an overbite, my front teeth are never used to chew on food since they simply can't due to my overbite. So I got my filling to prevent cavities when I was 7 but, even before that I would never brush or floss except the day before the dentist appointment. So I was extremely lucky, but it wasn't all good, I would get made fun of my horrendous yellow teeth and bad breath, so for the past year I've been brushing my teeth twice a day and using a water pick, and now I have braces. I'am so lucky to not have gotten cavities. Just saying guys! Brush your teeth. Not only is not doing so bad for your oral heath, but it's really embarrassing to have bad breath and yellow teeth, just saying
You technically should brush your teeth 15-20 min after each meal, and you should brush them softly. Toothpicks or floss as well, and stay away from most mouthwashes, they are flat out horrible for your teeth and do nothing to actually give you good breath (( in some cases it is more likely to give you bad breath ))
DecoyBlackMage ooooooh noooooo plz don't recommend that. You will cause more damage brushing after a meal. Example is drinking OJ then brushing after breakfast is outright terrible for enamel.
Brian Martone Science for one, not helping most washes is that they where not developed to even be mouthwashes to begin with, and in some cases the mouth wash in question contains chemicals that actually cause bad breath or damage to your gums. Some washes should be used only when you have canker sores (( mind you, they do not remove them faster )) or if you have trush, and these are not washes you use on a regular basis as they will stain your teeth generally or mess with your mouths natural fauna to the point it causes damage. Just brush properly with floss, and cut down on sugar and acidy drinks (( that includes fruit )), it really is not that complicated even if people want to make it so. Not saying you cannot have these. Also teeth are naturally stained yellow or grey, do not brush harder or use any whitening tooth paste (( they usually contain stuff like sand, that literally shaves your teeth down to make them whiter temporary at the cost of your tooth Enamel. )) The white smile is kinda a lie when it comes to adults, it sure as hell is not natural for a person past 25-30 to have naturally white teeth.
Dentists also recommend waiting to brush your teeth after eating something acidic, like fruit, or drinks like lemonade. They say that acids soften the enamel, which would then be weak enough to get worn away by toothbrush bristles. If that is the case, wouldn't it be a better idea to wait to brush your teeth in the morning in order to remove the effects of built up lactic acid in the mouth?
It's worth pointing out that how MUCH sugar is in your diet isn't nearly as important as how OFTEN. Generally speaking, the acid attack from a dose of sugar lasts about 20 minutes. If the sugar stays on your teeth (sticky stuff) or keeps getting added back in (sipping and snacking over time) then that 20 minute acid attack keeps getting refreshed. By sipping sugary beverages (soda, milk, fruit juice) throughout the day, you can bathe your teeth in cavity-causing acid for hours at a time.
You may not have gotten a cavity because some people have stronger enamel than others because of their genetics. Also, there's fluoride in our tap water, so unless you're brushing your teeth with bottled water, you're still receiving fluoride.

I'm following Kriss's tips to prevent cavities: brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice daily, flossing regularly, avoiding sugary and acidic foods, and seeing my dentist regularly.
May I ask how often do you see your dentist in a year? I visit mine every 6mos and I'm not sure if it's sufficient. Maybe you can ask kriss for me too? Thanks! 😅
Thats a very bad idea. Brushing will wear down your teeth enemal. You should brush at night before bed or eat an apple to rinse away the food film on your teeth. Also, studies have shown swishing with sesame oil can help for mouth hygiene and even reversing gingivitis.
brushing your teeth after meals is the best thing that I have found. I just can't cut down on the sweet stuff so brushing regularly has been the best solution for me. Haven't had a new cavity in years now....
The fact that we have microbes is usually neutral or advantageous to our helth. However, their excess or dispachment into areas of our body where they don't usually live can cause diseases. Take Escherichia coli. They are quite numerous in our intestines and produce vitamin K2. However, when they get into our our urinary tract, they may infect them.
DecoyBlackMage oh lol there's this UA-camr called Lemino and at the end of his video "top 10 facts part 2" he talked about the face mites and it was kinda funny.. Thought I randomly bumped into a Lemino fan but guess not
I still do brush and mouth wash and still get plenty of cavities. I cut my sugar consumption and every year 1 to 2 dental treatments rct and extraction is there. Modern medicine failed to protect me. In this age cutting sugar is hard task when you get so much processed food.
Starch is not as bad as sugar though. The amount of starch digestion in the mouth is pretty low, and it takes time for starch to be broken down to sugars by salivary amylase. As long as you're drinking plenty of water and rinsing out your mouth after you eat a starchy meal, you should be fine.
(FOR KIDS) its quarantine, just thought i'd help right now :) SO, basically if you have cavities don't worry! if you brush your teeth better than before basically, let's say you have baby teeth! and you have cavities. i actually recommend brushing better than ever! because if it falls out, theres a high chance it'll grow without a cavity :) - From somebody who did this 💅🏼
Sure. In times before recorded history, the planet was populated by Eldritch creatures known as "The Great Old Ones." When early humans started to settle the world, the Old Ones knew their era was over, and went into a deep slumber in the abyss. However, they spread their consciousness and implanted their will into some of the early humans, who started forming grotesque, strange cults around their likenesses and praising them as gods. One of the more guarded secrets of the Old Ones, known only to madmen, the immortal priests deep in Tibet, and experts of the Necronomicon, is Ayug-Thakot, the Great Agonizer. His worshippers revere pain and praise their dark deity by causing as much agony as humanly possible. Some say they hide among us - torturers, sadists... Dentists.
WildWasteland The Old Ones are smart. They know that they must have only a select few that can cause such pain. These worshippers can also be found as doctors, teachers, politicians and DMV workers. You must take great care to watch what these individuals are doing as there may be signs that are worshippers of Ayug-Thakot.
The video is very interesting because it shows us what causes cavities, it tells us which bacteria are the cause and everything is very well explained, excellently video
I barely brushed my teeth when I was younger. Never had a cavity even though I remember eating lots of things with sugar in it but now that I have braces, I'm forced to.
You are lucky. I am 12 years old and up to about a year ago I very scarcely brushed my teeth too. I have had a total of 17 fillings, 3 crowns, and 6 pulled teeth because of it. I don’t understand how I was never able to make the connection between brushing and cavities until now but I’m glad that I did because now I don’t have to worry about the dentist’s chair anymore.
Good idea. It is a thing. When you speak you hear the vibrations through your head mixed with the sound through the air. When you hear your recorded voice, you only hear the sound that travels through the air.
I just had a lot of dentist appointments last month and the month before I had a root canal treatment and three cavities. I didn’t feel any pain but I noticed a creator in my tooth. The dentist said I was lucky I caught it before it could reach the nerve. The treatment wasn’t as bad as I thought but I’d rather not go through that again. I was scared then really sad going through all that. But now I’m so relieved it’s finally over. My best advice is to most definitely see a dentist once or twice a year and if you notice something strange about your teeth even if you don’t feel pain don’t hesitate make an appointment right away. And it’s ok to be afraid but there’s no need to because it’s a problem that can and will be fixed for sure.
Thank you for this video alot, i am experiencing a very painful toothache at the moment, its basically caused by cavities. And now i am remembering the lack of attention to my teeth had to pay a price.
Inevitably, we don’t live in a sterile environment and even the most diligent among us can sometimes, well break the “rules”. One of the key actions you can take personally to not develop cavities is through regular brushing and flossing yourself. Not only will you help prevent the spread of cavities, but you’ll be setting a good example of oral care for your family and friends! - Dr. Lisa Germain (sending full support) 🦷🦷👋
I just want to say, I've used this video over the years to teach each of my children why we don't eat too much candy and need to brush and floss our teeth. Thanks!!
Ivan Solomon Nathan Haha I'm actually screwing with you all. I have no idea whether it's true or not. I like to be open minded and believe that the truth is somewhere in the middle. The Pineal Gland is definitely more than meets the eye (seen through its production of DMT, the strongest psychedelic known to man) and it's mystical/historical association as being known as the 3rd eye. Does fluoride really affect this thing? Who really knows, because we have yet to actually take scientific studies on this possibility... so stay humble
me too that used to be me. I dont like brushing my teeth because I despise mint and all toothpastes have a minty taste, even the tooty fruity ones. my tooth started hurting really bad and I had to have surgery. you should get your tooth, actually, all of them (even though only one was hurting, three more teeth had to be operated on for me) checked out. I now brush... occasionally... with baking soda because it isn't minty. it doesn't have fluoride though, so I have to put up with minty mouthwash afterwards. its tolerable though because the taste of mouthwash washes out of my mouth.
I'm surprised they didn't mention anything about tooth sealants--my teeth were covered when I was six and, fourteen years later, I still haven't had any cavities.
The worst part is poor oral hygiene isn’t the only factor that can result in cavities, poor genetics and enamel chipping can also be how a cavity forms. I got one on my back tooth, I was surprised because I brush for two minutes twice a day and the dentist told me chances were that my enamel had chipped off my tooth in that part
I had buck teeth and two cavities in elementary school, and every since I got my braces in middle school, I've always been brushing my teeth after eating a meal
Incredible TED Talk!!! I love this! I actually made a video talking about natural ways to heal cavities on my channel a couple days to go & I should have mentioned this video! 👏🏻
I once learned that there are at least 2 types of bacteria. Those that cause cavities and those that attack the gum. Everyone has one or the other if I'm correct. Some people may never get cavities but get gum infection more easily, and the other way around. Also makes me curious how animal teeth work because animal teeth don't have cavities very often and most animals don't brush their teeth as far as I know.

Paula Salazar lol I brush my teeth once a week and I've never had a cavity so this video does not convince me
It depends on the individual. Some people with lower volumes of saliva are more likely to get cavities.
i used to not brush at all and had no cavities. i only started getting them when i started brushing with toothpaste
not surprised, natural fluoride found in nature could help your teeth
but whats in your toothpaste and water if fluoridated is not natural by
any means. it industrial waist in the manufacture of fertilizer which
does not help in any way. it actually weakens your teeth by replacing
the calcium making your teeth brittle. i have cavities from when i was
in middle school (candy junky) and although i didn't do much brushing
then it did form like in your case in a period i was using toothpaste.
sense then i don't use toothpaste and it hasn't gotten worse. i do
recommend brushing you teeth but not with fluoride toothpaste or in my case toothpaste at all. look up
fluoride poisoning images and look at the teeth. no matter how small you use that damage is still being caused, it's just slower and less noticeable in the lower doses.
You must have very strong teeth. But why do you brush so little? Don't you get unconfortable?
So you recommend not brushing,,,?
@@lightbeingpontifex he’s recommending it
Fillings are used to treat cavities, not prevent them?
Braces are terrible for you. Rip.
You’re not 13 lol, you have to be lying.
Who else went to brush their teeth after watching this video
+Trevor Thai I was brushing my teeth while watching this.
DecoyBlackMage
Mouthwashes are flat out horrible? Says who?
Also teeth are naturally stained yellow or grey, do not brush harder or use any whitening tooth paste (( they usually contain stuff like sand, that literally shaves your teeth down to make them whiter temporary at the cost of your tooth Enamel. ))
The white smile is kinda a lie when it comes to adults, it sure as hell is not natural for a person past 25-30 to have naturally white teeth.
At least wait 10 minutes while your saliva neutralizes acids, then brush.
Me: watches whole video
RUNS TO BATHROOM!!
This video makes me want to brush my teeth

Oh, and the info, of course
hey wait...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I brush once every 5 days.
Sugar has nothing to do with cavities, actually -- it's one of the biggest lies the ClA fed to the general public.
It's animals products and meats that cause cavities fast, and dairy products such as cheese/dairy products cause cavities faster than meats and eggs. But, a plant-based diet does not cause cavities... At least, in my case, my plant-based diet (which does include a lot of sugary foods and sodas) didn't cause any new cavities over the past decade, and I haven't even brushed daily since 2015!
In my case, not brushing my teeth for 3 to 5 months hasn't caused any changes, and I haven't noticed any new cavity forming since 2011 when I ditched all animal products, as it's meats/eggs/dairy products that cause cavities and gum infections -- I'm the pure being aka the opposite of womyn, so I never even had smeIIs (I have no smeIIs) and that makes brushing every day pointless for me, and, I also don't like the taste of toothpaste, and brushing 3 times a day is definitely too much, but my protector recommended that I brush every week at least, just to be sure it won't affect my teeth...
I consumed more sweets/sugar than anyone over the past decade, and I stopped brushing daily over 6 years ago, but, my teeth haven't gotten any new cavities since I ditched dairy products and eggs... The typical soda also does not seem to be causing any damage to my teeth -- but Cola might cause damage, as it contains phosphoric acid, but I only drink Cola occasionally, and I prefer Green Cola because it's a healthy alternative to Cola... I always check my teeth to see if there's any new cavity forming, though -- luckily, there doesn't seem to be any new one forming, while the ones I already had (caused by dairy since 2006 to summer 2011 when I ate a lot of dairy products and brushing daily) haven't changed at all since 2011...

It's funny because it's not just any bird but a Dodo, which was a pre-historic bird that went extinct in the 17th century and was fearless of humans.
Dodos had no natural predators, so fear is futile, they were also smart, but again, ignorant and fearless.

Thats a very bad idea. Brushing will wear down your teeth enemal. You should brush at night before bed or eat an apple to rinse away the food film on your teeth. Also, studies have shown swishing with sesame oil can help for mouth hygiene and even reversing gingivitis.

so we all have microbes because of our parents kissiny us when we were babies......curse my mom
debbies world lol 😂
The fact that we have microbes is usually neutral or advantageous to our helth. However, their excess or dispachment into areas of our body where they don't usually live can cause diseases. Take Escherichia coli. They are quite numerous in our intestines and produce vitamin K2. However, when they get into our our urinary tract, they may infect them.

You're probably brushing your teeth to hard ..brushing the enamel off..
Yup
I still do brush and mouth wash and still get plenty of cavities. I cut my sugar consumption and every year 1 to 2 dental treatments rct and extraction is there. Modern medicine failed to protect me. In this age cutting sugar is hard task when you get so much processed food.
That’s right, and it’s the frequency too. You can get cavities eating a few grams of sugar a day if you spread it out over the day.
Thank you, animation explains clearly what happen when have cavities.
My five year old nephew and I watched this after the dentist today. Thank you!!
Starch is not as bad as sugar though. The amount of starch digestion in the mouth is pretty low, and it takes time for starch to be broken down to sugars by salivary amylase. As long as you're drinking plenty of water and rinsing out your mouth after you eat a starchy meal, you should be fine.
Not many people drink water. People like to drink sodas, juice, sugary drinks. That's the problem.
watched a lot ted-ed videos, my photography teacher said that my knowledge was so wide, so thanks to ted-ed

Can u plz do the history of dentists
Your snapchat would be excellent video

I barely brushed my teeth when I was younger. Never had a cavity even though I remember eating lots of things with sugar in it but now that I have braces, I'm forced to.
You are lucky. I am 12 years old and up to about a year ago I very scarcely brushed my teeth too. I have had a total of 17 fillings, 3 crowns, and 6 pulled teeth because of it. I don’t understand how I was never able to make the connection between brushing and cavities until now but I’m glad that I did because now I don’t have to worry about the dentist’s chair anymore.
can you do "why we sound different on video" next? I've always wondered if it was just me or that's actually a thing!
Good idea. It is a thing. When you speak you hear the vibrations through your head mixed with the sound through the air. When you hear your recorded voice, you only hear the sound that travels through the air.
Lugh Summerson oh, thanks! that was very helpful!
3:09 R.I.P Ancient person

Those that cause cavities and those that attack the gum.
Everyone has one or the other if I'm correct.
Some people may never get cavities but get gum infection more easily, and the other way around.
