The Tang Dynasty was the most cosmopolitan and socially liberal dynasty in Chinese history. But still, there is a limit to the kind of deviancy they could tolerate.

Wei Zhang was one of the greatest ministers of all time. Taizong frequently politely bore his critiques to Taizong's benefit. After Wei's death, Taizong failed invading Korea afterwards saying "If Wei Zheng were still alive, he would not have allowed me to go on this campaign." afterwards restoring his monument and rewarding the Wei family for Wei Zhang's service. Well there are still some materials he can't change, like the famous 大唐创业起居注 written by Wen Daya.
The book is written before Li Shimin killed his brothers and seized the throne. If the records was reliable, Li Shimin is still one of the greatest generals in Chinese history. Maybe part of it was exaggerated. But still, one of the best.
I mean afterall, he did take down most of the hard-bitten obstacles in path of Tang's reunification of China. Here's a list:
      Xue Rengao
      Liu Wuzhou
      Dou Jiande
      Wang Shichong
      Liu Heita
These major opponents obliterated tons of famous generals from Li Yuan's clan. Yet all of them were relentlessly defeated by Li Shimin's force. Today, the battle of Hulaoguan where Li Shimin with his 3,500 cavalry crushed the Dou Jiande's 100,000 soldiers is still a essential material for Chinese cadets to learn.

Tang Dynasty is a predominantly Chinese cultured Empire but also retained nomadic influences from the Xiongnu and the Xianbei peoples due to the 5 barbarian invasions after the war of the 8 princes. The foreign nomadic people started to mingle with the Chinese population after countless invasions. They were quickly sinicized and assimilated by the majority Chinese people as they swiftly adopted the agrarian Chinese way of life but also left their mark on the Chinese societies. But from the late Tang until the present day, the nomadic influences were lost in time, you can compare the Men's Rounded collared robe from early Tang and the late Tang. Early Tang era Round collared Robe were very tight but late era Tang rounded robe were big and loosen very much like the Song dynasty counterpart reflecting the gradual loss of nomadic influences. Same thing goes to the headgear, the Song Dynasty style long eared hat was actually first appeared during the late Tang period .

Apparently the Tang Dynasty also claims to have Zhongyuan origins. I was surprised when they changed their national outfit to Round collared Robe, even the inner robe.
cross-collared robe has a history of at least from the Zhou dynasty, even further, and is that the oldest costume of huaxia has been replaced quite simply. Do you have any documents on the Tang dynasty dress-changing decrees?
The costume change under the Qing, china, and Nguyen dynasty, Vietnam was very obvious.

@@ZhangLee. I also did not offend. The truth can be seen in the Qing Dynasty in China and the Nguyen in Vietnam. Their styles are completely different from those used in the previous centuries. The entire population wears shirts with similar texture, the short length can be different. Although cross-collared robe styles still appear, they are only used for rituals, or high honor in society, on formal occasions (the Nguyen dynasty in Vietnam.
This is different from today's Vest suits. Clothes vary, and vest worn on formal occasions, when you go to work ...
Round collared Robe in the Tang era is not like Vest, worn by all classes, even the inner layer is Round collared Robe.

@@godzillamothra5983 one of reason is Tang are very familiar with nomadic culture at the north (since they are most likely descendent of XianBei clan from the north).
Han ruling system demand their people stay at fixed location and do agriculture work. This is a very fundamental practices that act as cornerstone for literally everything, culture, policy, government and administration. That is also the very reason why Han cannot control the plain even if they able to wipe everyone out on that land. Because anyone live at the plain will eventually adopt the nomadic culture and deviate from Han. No 'genuine Han' can live there because they cant plant their rice there.
Tang run both nomadic system and han system. The highest level ruler can be referred as Khan (nomadic system) and Emperor (Han system) at the same time. They don't give a shxt about bloodlines and race (a significant trait of nomadic clan). They let nomadic clan handle the military part and let Han people run the administration stuff. Its a hybrid system.
But that is also the reason of their downfall. The trait of nomadic clan being aggressive and robbing manners eventually turn against Tang Empire itself when expansion become too expensive. Nomadic clan do not have terrible gap in social hierachy (Eg: Temujin able to become a clan leader out of nowhere as a slave). That also mean they don't give a fxxk about history and social status. If the leader cant satisfy their need, then they do what they want to achieve it. Tang Empire already encountered countless scene like this (political dogfight within royal family) before their golden age end. They are essentially counting down to their death after the Empire tolerate the pseudo 'self-independence' by their warlord.
The trait from overpowered military class cause the downfall of Tang Empire and it lead to countless coup like this even after they fall. The next 'China' tried to fix this by completely disarming the military class. And here we got Song dynasty as the weakest china in terms of military power, who try to go easypeasy with everyone.

The name of the Han people comes from the Han Dynasty, not the Mongols. You've read too much about fake history. Ancient China was a patriarchal society. They don't care too much about women's ancestry. There is a Chinese saying called "非我族类,其心必异": It means that different races and we are not people of the same race, so loyalty is suspicious. This sentence is from the Tang Dynasty. The alien in this sentence refers to Turk. "胡无人,汉道昌": kill all the nomadic barbarians, and let the Han civilization flourish and develop in the local area; This classic saying also comes from the Tang Dynasty. People in the Tang Dynasty never thought they were Turks. The emperor of the Tang Dynasty only had a grandmother who was Xianbei, so there was little nomadic blood. Xianbei people are not Turks. They are nomadic people originating from Northeast China. Turkish history is full of falsehood.

It's pretty funny because "Han" Chinese especially in the North are likely a massive mix of Turkic, Mongol, Jurchen, and Chinese people. Chinese meaning the people birth-place of Han Identity which I believe is called "Zhong yuan". At this point "Han" is just a title for an agrarian lifestyle as China has had so much contact with Turks and Mongols. The Western "Xia" not to be confused with the Xia Dynasty was Xianbei or Mongol in origin and eventually became Chinese. Same for the later Tang dynasty (not to be confused with Tang) as they were ruled by the Shatuo Turkic tribe. A tribe that fractured from the Western Gokturks and under the rule of the Tang dynasty slowly became more and more Han before eventually simply viewing themselves as Han. Same happened to any foreign ruling dynasty besides the Yuan.

The Mongols were only one of hundreds of tribes that surrendered to the Han people, and the Mongols stood out until the civil wars of the Jin and Song Dynasties in China had no time to manage nomadic tribes, The Mongols dispatched all the troops to lay down a small town on the Chinese frontier and acquired a large number of Han armor and weapons. It was not until 20 years later that Genghis Khan was independent from China at the age of 49, and then conquered Central Asia and Eastern Europe before he dared to fight with the Jin Dynasty. Finally, the Mongolian Khan took the Han surname and implemented the Chinese writing system. The etiquette gained the recognition of the Han nationality in the north before conquering the Song Dynasty!

    • @jialinlu5771
      @jialinlu5771 3 роки тому +9

It is common practice until this Emperor Taizong breaks the rule, which is seen to be the most significant failure and stain of his reign. Before that, the strict rule is that the historians keeps the record and cannot be intervened by any power. And the job of historian in China is most of the time a hereditary job. One thing worthy noting is that in China there are mainly two types of historians, type one is who simply write the record (the raw material) of what happened, and type 2 is who coverts the raw records and other materials into history books. Usually, when a new dynasty overthrow the old one, the new dynasty will inherit the raw records of the old dynasty, and assign a historian to write a history book about the old dynasty. So in this sense, what Emperor Taizong did is a direct modification of the raw record and it is inevitably going to bias the later history book writing (although after many centuries), and that is why this is considered to be having a very negative influence.

Chanced upon this video. Nice animations but factually incorrect...the only “Sino-Turkic” link is the early threat posed by the Eastern Turkic Khaganate, which is swiftly removed by Emperor Taizong.
Emperor Taizong’s paternal grandma Duchess Dugu, is of Xianbei origin, not Turkic.
In response to the Eastern Turkic Khaganate’s incursion in 626 (led by Ashina Duobi, their last Khan), right away his ascension as Emperor, Taizong launched a military campaign against Eastern Turkic Khaganate in the Winter of 629 and succeeded in capturing Ashina Duobi by spring 630.
Emperor Taizong eliminated this early menace to his empire but spared Ashina Doubi’s life and brought him to Chang’an where he was given a mansion to live out the rest of his life (arguably laying down Tang practice of providing generous treatment towards the rulers of conquered nations).
Theses defeated rulers and their retinue settled in Chang’an over time and helped make the capital city and the Tang empire more cosmopolitan etc. Their descendants still live in Chang’an (modern-day Xi’an).
    Benevolence breeds benevolence. 👍👍👍

Thank you so much! I learned some interesting things. About the Turks, I would like to add something. First of all, the Ashina are thought to be an Iranic Tribe, that either conquered the Turkish speaking tribes or joined them peacefully in a confederation. The Ashina were probably related to the WUSUN-Tribe that lived around the Altai and Tian Shan. According to the New Book of Tang, the Ashina clan was a component of the Xiongnu confederation. The Tiele People or Gaoche were originally called Dingling People. The Dingling originally lived on the bank of the Lena River in the area west of Lake Baikal. So it was the union of Siberians and Indo-Europeans, that brought about the Koekturks.

The Han ethnicity is sort of an artificial ethnicity where many non-Han and "barbarians" became Han through assimilation and cultural adoption. And many of the so called "barbarians" were actually quite advanced, and made up a large numbers of Chinese people in ancient times. For example, the largest kingdom of the Warring States period, the Chu Kingdom, had a native population of mostly non-Han people and the kingdom itself was considered quasi-barbarian like.

The composition of genes of what is considered Han does not remain the same, since the integration of Austro-Asiatic Yue people in South China, Indo-Europeans in Western China, and the integration of northern nomadic people of the steppes and Manchuria have significantly changed Han genetics. They did a study on genetic differences among the Han people, and it varied significantly according to region - as different as a person from Korea or Japan.

@@papercat2599 No, Han is not simply everyone within the empire. Are foreigners Han? Are barbarian nomads inside the empire Han? Of course not. The Han Dynasty created the name Han for people who followed a certain culture and originated from the central plains. Before the Han Dynasty, the Han people were just the people of the Central Plains. The word Han can be retroactively applied to people of the Central Plains, and the Chu people are not central plains people. You claim Northern Han genes stay the same for 3000 years? Stop making embarassing claims. Modern Southern Han are much closer to the original Han people in genes and language. Southern languages actually resemble ancient Chinese languages while northern languages like Mandarin were influenced by medieval nomadic barbarian languages. Also, the genetic difference between Northern Han and Southern Han is significant - like the difference between southern Han and Korean. The Northern part of China was invaded and taken over by northern steppe people for many centuries starting with the fall of the Jin Dynasty, 16 kingdoms, Sui-Tang era, Northern Jin Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty, and Qing Dynasty.

@@volkanozturkmen6245 Tang's emperors had ancestors (linked by mothers) of Xianbei whose y chromosome is C haplogroup same as Mongolians. So not Turks. Turks' first king is Scythian with Y chromosome of haplogroup R1a and of course he ruled a mixed group of people with haplogroup C and Q. So I said not Turks but Mongolians.

According to the logic of your Turks, I can't understand it at all. It has nothing to do with the Turks, but you have to come to recognize your ancestors.
