Hey brother, I am back and was patiently waiting for this Part 2 and THANK YOU for the amazing explanation and comparison, I love how you specifically did the ProRes RAW comparison between the Panasonic and Sony, and side by side comparison between the internal XAVC recording with ProRes RAW as well. I thought something was wrong with my style of colour grading that I saw more noise on ProRes RAW compared to XAVC, I thought it was "my fault" that it was noisy, hahaha and your video has given me the peace of mind knowing the fact that its because there is no internal correction of denoising since it bypasses that, All in all, thank you so much for your amazing explanation and looking forward to more amazing content from you my friend, thanks for the corrective LUTS too, gonna test it out PS: I humbly believe that the people here who are following your channel are nerds as well so I don think you should put any disclaimers in your videos as we ARE NOT going to skip to another part of the video and will watch through all your amazing explanation ;). I already found many interesting findings. So will try and work on that soon. And as I told you before, RAW is usually noisy, that's the norm in RAW. And yeah... Thank you so much for the support. Glad this video was helpful. 4444 you practically don’t lose anything. So yea, stay in DAVINCI and use 444. You’re just exploading the sizes of your files if that’s ok with you
Fantastic info and work packed in this. Just finished building an FX3 rig for a feature documentary climbing the highest mountain in the Caribbean and have been researching the noise issue. Now i finally understand the sony sensor without processing is just noisy. What settings would you recommend when exporting prores 4444 from FCPX to work in Davinci? Again great content. Subbed!
SGamut3.Cine made not for final output but to capture maximum gradation of colors considering 8bit codecs and XAVC compression. This is why color is ugly. You have to convert SGamut3 to correct color space with LUTs or Color space transform in Resolve. But if you have RAW - this is nonsense. Converting RAW to SGamut is like burn forest to plant new trees.
All depends on your skills and color grading level. I’m mindful of the mass public skill levels which are mostly more on the beginner/intermediate level.
Have you experimented much with HDR timelines in FCPX? I’m only first starting to read on the subject but your color grading video is one of my favorite I’ve seen for FCPX. I saw Armando’s video with a Dolby colorist and it’s intrigued me. I would appreciate your input on HDR if you have one!
Thanks Billy for watching and for your compliments on my coloring. I honestly haven’t throughly tested it. So I can’t give any solid feedback on it yet. But I’m planning to do so soon though.
I'm probably skipping the FX6 actually, since it's pretty much an A7S3 with XLRs (I'm oversimplifying of course) So it depends on what you need to do with it. S1H is great on so many things... but not that great in many others. Again it depends
You are the MAN! I gave up on ProRes Raw on Windows... it’s just unusable, there is no NLE which can be used for the whole workflow. I’ve just purchased the M1 Mini during the weekend and started to explore FCPX. The Mac handles the S1H 5.9k footage like butter and I can edit from my Atomos SSDs. Thanks for the grading tips, you detailed like nobody else and in a few minutes! Can’t wait for your next video 😁
Thank you for the follow up video. I had been waiting for part 2 to drop (glad I am subscribed). is there no Arri RAW conversion to use in FXP? Then apply an Arri LOG to Rec. 709 LUT???
I don't know if it's the Kool-aid I'm drinking but I seem to get better motion cadence when recording Prores Raw in Ninja V than I do with the internal recordings. Anyone else notice this or is my mind playing tricks on me?
Hey there, your videos are one of the best I have ever seen on UA-cam. I watched your Ronin 4D vs FX3 Video multiple times and was super impressed by the results you showed. I have recently downloaded some test footage supplied by a local dealer and also some from DJIs official sample footage website. Every single clip is super noisy, and I am wondering what is happening here. According to your findings the 4D is one of the best cameras for low light but all the footage I looked at so far looks worse than my old DSLR even. What is the deal here? I am aware that Pro Res Raw is much noisier than other codecs but even the h.264 footage I got is the same. Thanks so much for creating these well-crafted videos! I would appreciate any tips, since I really want to get this camera!
Hey Phill, thanks for your question, hoenstly I can't help you much without seeing what you're talking about, but I can confidently say that hands down, the 4D is way better than the FX3 when it comes to low light performance. As you already know, ProRes will always be noisier, but the noise in 4D does not really destry the details like the FX3. Also, these days, noise on such cameras shouldn't scare us that much anymore since denoisers are way better now than 10 years ago. Again, I can't judge on what that supplier shot, I can only judge based on what I shot, which was what you saw and way more (since I didn't share everything, I just shared a sample)
@@THEDPJOURNEY Hey there! Thank you so much for your reply my friend, I truly appreciate it. I've done a lot of research and it seems like there are certain things that people do not mention in their reviews like that you have to overexpose by two stops with the 4D in order to get a less noisy image etc. I actually uploaded some test footage a few days ago in a little clip to show what I mean. Would you mind if I send you an e-mail or something maybe? I tried reaching you via instagram but I think it didn't come through. It would be awesome to just briefly show you what I mean, but only if you have time of course. Thanks so much man, I am really enjoying your work.
16:40 you can actually record ProRes RAW with a Ninja V on the FX6. It requires you get the SDI adapter and SDI Raw license from Atomos' website, which is only a $300 total cost. Combine that cost with the Ninja V its $900, still cheaper than the $1200 Shogun.
Subscribed, these videos about RAW are amazing! I am loving my A7SIII and I have the Ninja V but I haven't been dealing with Prores Raw before. Should I for some reason desperately want to use Resolve to edit the material is there any lossless way (or one with negligible loss) to transcode it to some accepted format?
Thanks for your comment. Transcoding to prores 444 to grade in Davinci would be the best option. I haven't noticed any loss honestly except for the Raw to log conversion and ISO control.
Excellent work as usual. Very technical while still being easy to understand. I definitely learned a lot. Thanks for all your hard work on these videos!
Great video DPJ! Can you suggest the most effective means to denoise prores raw footage within the premiere ecosystem? Also, I know you alluded to it in the video but can you share when you plan on releasing the hue and saturation luts you have designed for the S1H?
Thank you so much for watching. Best denoiser is Neat Video. A bout the LUT, I didn’t say I’ll be posting a LUT for the S1H, even though I might do sometime soon since you mentioned. Stay tuned and it might be out soon 😉
Just discovered you channel. Really good. I enjoyed this presentation a lot. I am thinking of doing RAW with my GH6 now that it will be an option. One question I have. Are you saying if I am shooting RAW with the ninja v+ and with my GH6 that I'll have no stabilization when I am shooting? If so YIKES that is a deal breaker.
Thanks for the video. But i dont like, how many youtubers complain about the noise performance of this cam... i recently shot a small commercial with no time and no lights, absolute nightmare-conditions to work with. Since i could redo the shoot in case it wouldnt turn out good, i simply jammed the camera into iso 12.800 in slog3 and shot the entire piece in 100 and 200fps. The camera produced professional results in >90% of the footage. (Granted, i exposed the subject correctly all the time). This is just amazing. And yes, i would still love to turn off NR completely as i also prefer to denoise in post. But still, man this camera is an absolute monster.
Noise is only present in lower mid tones and shadows. So if your shoot is all above the noise threshold, then you’re good to go. That’s exactly what I demonstrated here. But if you underexposed, then the noise looks much worse than many other cameras. I’ll do a comparison to show that anyway.
@@THEDPJOURNEY yes, absolutely. But thats always the case with ANY log footage. But im currently only using internal recording so i only have the pre-denoised footage to judge. Concerning compressed footage i have to say the a7s3 beats everything ive used to far concerning exposure latitude. (Usable skintones between 38-65IRE, thats crazy) I didnt want to say, that you complained here. Your assesment of the raw footage was fair & accurate imo. Proper raw is always quite noisy in the shadows.
So I come from a photo editing background where everything I edit is raw in Lightroom. Is that exactly what is happening when you set both to “none” and edit linear raw in FCP? (Aside from WB control for now). For photography, the amazing thing about raw is how recoverable shadows are in post. Does that apply for workflow in video? I’d be interested to see similarities/differences between editing raw in Lightroom and editing raw in FCP/Premiere. Great video btw!
Unfortunately Raw video and Photo have a lot of differences. You'd be disappointed with RAW video coming from Raw photo. So yeah, you'll need to manage your expectations
Yeah I’m planning to do that one day... it’ll be a HUGE NERD episode though... pretty complex subject. So yeah maybe when the market quiets down I’ll tackle it. Since I also come from a photo background
No that only works with compressed format only. RAW will always be “raw” meaning no processing will happen to it in camera. The only processing that will happen is the one you apply to it
Amazing channel, subscribed immediately! thanks so much for all the work here. Question: when you transcode the ProResRAW file to ProRes4444 for editing in Resolve, do you still apply the RAW to Log conversion before the transcode? Or transcode the Linear version? Thanks !
Thank you so much for the support. Welcome aboard. I export to slog3, just because I use my custom LUTS that work with it. Good point to actually try the linear version
much appreciate the nerd-ness; gotta know why things happen and how they happen. Some folks train their attention by asking themselves questions: such as, "What, exactly, am I seeing here??? What is it in this image that I am seeing???"
I love your videos! So concise and well explained! Have a question actually two. 1 - color collection fix LUT's - they are only for RAW-LOG converted or when you shoot just XAVC it's also a good idea to apply these LUTs before color grading? 2 - I've heard that to "get rid" of a green tinge you have to adjust a setting Color phase to +2, but I'd rather leave it as is and apply fix LUT since there are LUTs that already created with that tinge in mind - like Alexa Phantom LUT for Joe. Would it be the best practice here to leave a Color phase as is +0 and then apply fix LUT's (HUE FIX + HUE/SAT) when needed? Thank you!
Really well done. Do you use Motion to create your graphics? I noticed what looks like the Motion VFX cam rig on some of the shots. Just wondering because the way you flow into the graphics and how clean everything looks, is well done!
@@THEDPJOURNEY Keynote.. very cool. Hadn't thought about that. where do you get your images? such as the mac laptop, etc. because those look nice and clean as well.
After part 1 ,I immediately went to part 2. Very well done , nice graphics and sounds. Very well presented and the best info on Pro Res raw on UA-cam. Thank you very much!
This might seem like a silly question, but what ISO is best to use when using prores raw on a Sony A7s3? I use Premiere, so I can’t adjust it in post, as you stated in the video.
Thank you for this thorough and well put together breakdown of ProRes RAW. I am new to using FCP, what is your recommendation for denoising footage...are you using a native denoiser or a plugin such as Neato or Magic Bullets?
Thank you for this amazing work! My question : what if I record 422 prores on the ninja v ? Are the “pro’s” of internal recording like lens correction etc still be in the file? Is the ninja v only useful if shooting raw? I want to shoot 422 prores on the ninja v , is it the same like 422 internal recording?or even better?
well... it's better in a sense that ProRes would be a friendlier format on a Mac for example. It's and All-I compression. and you can have it be less compressed than internal. I honestly didnt really conduct a proper test to compare
Great series! Excellent work. Well presented and highly polished. 👌👍💜

During what stage of the post workflow do you denoise the footage? is it in FCPX or in Resolve after transcoding to ProRes 4444 from FCPX?
You are the MAN! I gave up on ProRes Raw on Windows... it’s just unusable, there is no NLE which can be used for the whole workflow. I’ve just purchased the M1 Mini during the weekend and started to explore FCPX. The Mac handles the S1H 5.9k footage like butter and I can edit from my Atomos SSDs. Thanks for the grading tips, you detailed like nobody else and in a few minutes! Can’t wait for your next video 😁
Really happy I can help! and thanks for the kind words. Best of luck with FCPX, it's super quick editing PRAW
are those corrective luts just for when youve done a raw to log conversion? or does it apply to hevc footage as well?
Raw to log or internal recording.
You sir, are my favorite nerd now! great explanation, thanks for the content 👍
It' my greatest honor Joao! :) Happy you enjoyed my Nerdism... more to come this Monday
This is a world class video and review! Thank you for taking the time to test this and share the knowledge with us! You rock
My pleasure! Thank you so much Luka!
Anyone know why my Ninja V recorded ProresRAW footage is WITH color profile, I'm sure that I off the Luts output..
The software applies that by default, but you can change it in post from the drop down list
A7SIII raw with VLOG conversion is magical looking. Sony tech with Panasonic color is a match made in heaven
YES RIGHT!!! I Agree as well! So funny how that worked out!
I use capture one and set my defaults for my a7r IV to Nikon D850 portrait mode for the same type of effect!
Uhhhh....subscribed holy shiet that was amazing!
Hahaha... thanks Mark! Welcome aboard
Is this info still up to date, or has Premiere Pro since become more integrated with Pro Res Raw controls for WB, ISO, etc? What about for FX3?
Not sure honestly. I don’t use Premiere.
Thank you for the follow up video. I had been waiting for part 2 to drop (glad I am subscribed). is there no Arri RAW conversion to use in FXP? Then apply an Arri LOG to Rec. 709 LUT???
Thanks for watching. No Arri unfortunately, you can see the full list on the dropdown from my screen capture in the episode
Gerald Undone of cinematography
Hahaha... I’m humbled and flattered! Thanks Frank. Mean a lot to me
hahahah he is youtuber, but not cinematographer
I don't know if it's the Kool-aid I'm drinking but I seem to get better motion cadence when recording Prores Raw in Ninja V than I do with the internal recordings. Anyone else notice this or is my mind playing tricks on me?
Can you explain more what you mean by that?
Amazing work man. Thanks for all the info. Quick question, what program did you color the footage with?
Happy you liked it, I used Final Cut and Color Finale Plugin to grade it
Hey there, your videos are one of the best I have ever seen on UA-cam.
Will the FX6 ProresRaw have the possibility to change Exposure, WB and ISO in post ?
Let's pray this happens... I assume eventually it will
16:40 you can actually record ProRes RAW with a Ninja V on the FX6. It requires you get the SDI adapter and SDI Raw license from Atomos' website, which is only a $300 total cost. Combine that cost with the Ninja V its $900, still cheaper than the $1200 Shogun.
Thanks for a very informative epsiode! Free film school!
you're most welcome Paul
Subscribed, these videos about RAW are amazing! I am loving my A7SIII and I have the Ninja V but I haven't been dealing with Prores Raw before. Should I for some reason desperately want to use Resolve to edit the material is there any lossless way (or one with negligible loss) to transcode it to some accepted format?
Thanks for your comment. Transcoding to prores 444 to grade in Davinci would be the best option. I haven't noticed any loss honestly except for the Raw to log conversion and ISO control.
S-tier video. Highly valuable informations, i keep coming back to this vid! keep it up!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back
Thanks for the great video. Do you think there is any chance that someday Black Magic RAW will work with the a7siii?
I think yes... but don't get too excited as I have some not very cool findings about BRAW that I'll reveal in my next episode. So stay tuned
Excellent work as usual. Very technical while still being easy to understand. I definitely learned a lot. Thanks for all your hard work on these videos!
Many thanks! Glad you liked it Shon. See you in the next one
ProRes RAW if you're a filmmaker
XAVC if you're a content-creator
Makes sense for sure
Thank you soooo much. Top quality content. You made me understand that raw is not for me. At least now.
Thanks Dario for the compliments. Glad it helped you decide
Huge work !!! thank you so much for sharing this study. I'll just stick to 10bit 4:2:2 with xavc.
Thanks for watching. 10bit 422 is pretty awesome. Raw is not a solution for everything that’s for sure
I even have a link to your first ProRes Raw video in mine, because you explain thing really nice!
And I'll put one more link to this video - it's great!
Oh thanks buddy! Really appreciate it
@@THEDPJOURNEY keep on doing those vids! I get a lot of inspiration from you and I'm sure many people do!
Thanks again man! Really happy you like the content. With everyone’s support I’ll keep on doing this
Just discovered you channel.
You will still have in body stabilization but not the electronic versions.
IBIS Or IBIS+OS should work. Any electronic or Gyro based stabilization will not be supported. GH6 didn’t have any Gyro based stabilization anyway
Totally forgot about the lack of lens corrections while shooting raw - interesting to see the noise differences as well. Great video
Thanks Keith! appreciate your support. yeah this lens correction threw off a VFX project i was working on
@@THEDPJOURNEY Would love to see a video about how you go about doing lens correction and CA correction. Thanks for the excellent content!
Thank you for the great videos! What plug-in do you typically use for your post de-noise process?
I use Neat Video
Any way to get that HS fix in-camera, via the Color Phase picture profile settings?
In theory yes... but That’d be pretty hard to calibrate honestly. Not worth the time when we have a very easy solution in post you know
Thanks for the video.
(Usable skintones between 38-65IRE, thats crazy)
I didnt want to say, that you complained here.
As a hobby photog who's interested in video as well I'd also love to see a explanation on the differences between RAW photo and video :-)
Yeah I’m planning to do that one day... it’ll be a HUGE NERD episode though... pretty complex subject. So yeah maybe when the market quiets down I’ll tackle it. Since I also come from a photo background
Do you think with the focus breathing comp update coming soon that would work with pro res raw?
No that only works with compressed format only. RAW will always be “raw” meaning no processing will happen to it in camera. The only processing that will happen is the one you apply to it
I wonder why you are not talking about Nikon z6 for Prores Raw ? They were the first using it!
Because they messed it up so bad unfortunately.
@@THEDPJOURNEY Those correction LUTs for the a7Siii are so good. Thanks !
much appreciate the nerd-ness; gotta know why things happen and how they happen. Some folks train their attention by asking themselves questions: such as, "What, exactly, am I seeing here??? What is it in this image that I am seeing???"
FANTASTIC VIDEO! Bravo 👏 Well executed and extremely informative. Thank you. This was much needed.
Glad you enjoyed it! Appreciate your awesome support and kind words
WOW. The value this video provides is absolutely huge! Thanks a lot for your work! 🙌
Thanks a lot for such a detailed video and for providing the corrective luts
My pleasure. Thanks for watching
Great video! Does anyone know if Premiere Pro has an easy option to correct the lens distortion from ProRes Raw?
hanks for watching, Not sure about PP, but there are a ton of plugins I'm sure for that
Again a very informative and helpful video. Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels.
Thanks Brian... really happy you like the content. Hope to see you in the next one
Hey but can you tell me why this camera produce more motion blur even if you crank up your shutter speed
I personally haven’t really had that issue. So not sure
Amazing work, very informative & I loved your style
Thanks a lot Sahil. Glad you liked it
I think this needs to be updated :) part 3 ?
Man, if the a7siii had the option to turn off noise reduction, there'd be a lot less need for all this trouble
I WISH....
I use keynote and yes motion VFX camrig
@@THEDPJOURNEY Keynote.. very cool. Hadn't thought about that. where do you get your images? such as the mac laptop, etc. because those look nice and clean as well.
After part 1 ,I immediately went to part 2. Very well done , nice graphics and sounds. Very well presented and the best info on Pro Res raw on UA-cam. Thank you very much!
Glad you liked it! My absolute pleasure to have you onboard
Mannnn I just love how easily you elaborated this, HOW YOU MADE THIS TYPE OF PRESENTATION ? I'm in love with this 💓💓
Thank you so much!! Happy you liked it
@@THEDPJOURNEY is there any way in Premiere Pro to make such kind of Animations ? or any plugin for Premiere Pro ? that would be a great help
No idea honestly... I don’t use premiere.
@@THEDPJOURNEY no problem, thanks mate
@@THEDPJOURNEY what software do you use for the animations? i know you could use many but just curious. thanks!
This might seem like a silly question, but what ISO is best to use when using prores raw on a Sony A7s3? I use Premiere, so I can’t adjust it in post, as you stated in the video.
the ones with least amount of noise when properly exposed are 640 and 12,800
@@THEDPJOURNEY Awesome, thanks! I knew those were the base iso's for S-Log, but I didn't know if that would be the same for Prores Raw.
Excellent review. Congrats and many thanks!
My pleasure, thanks for watching
Thank you for this thorough and well put together breakdown of ProRes RAW. I am new to using FCP, what is your recommendation for denoising footage...are you using a native denoiser or a plugin such as Neato or Magic Bullets?
Thanks for watching.. I use Neat Video. Best one I've tested so far
@@THEDPJOURNEY thank you for the answer , I hope you can compare it in the near future :) .
And again, great work !!
Thanks for watching. I’ll post results when I compare 👍
