It's called liquefaction, and it's not caused by the bay sinking, it happens anywhere there is a quake and there's moisture in the ground.
Can't deny the power of nature captured in these clips.
Just, don’t step in a puddle. You’ll be stuck when the water settles back out.
Like the Snowmass Boneyard
Know that this a vid about serious earthquake damage and lives lost, but the 'ugly bowling shoes' had me laughing hard. Dark humor indeed to risk being buried alive than to be caught dead in bowling shoes. The irony is rich.
Japan never gets a Break...
So sad... Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Godzilla..... Terrible.
@@graemepattersonlol don’t forget Gamera. But I was gonna say Japan gets entirely too many breaks. That park certainly did.
They don't just not get a break, it seems like all terrible forces of nature converge on that one country and it's surrounding Islands! They have quakes, tsunamis, avalanches, landslides, flooding, typhoons, etc. They even get the most tornados of any Asian country. Oh, and we can't forget volcanic eruptions! 🫣
that's what's going on. So your child is living in a peaceful country? God is still blessing you!
@@A.Girl.Has.No.Name.Yeah it's a shame that all of the top 10 countries that cause pollution don't get the same treatment. Japan being in the top 10.
That last guy is a mood.
Watching these, you realize how fragile our planet is.
Gotta say, the one in the park with all the cracks is quietly the scariest one. Because the ground is shaking, sure, same as the rest, but here’s a guy filming as it gradually sinks in just how extensive the cracking is… and that he’s in the middle of it.
The cameraman was so reckless to still be able to record in that situation, it was crazy
The devastation is heartbreaking, yet the footage is captivating.
During the 2001 earthquake near Seattle, my husband saw water spurting up from cracks on the runway at Boeing field. That’s liquefaction which happens on supposedly solid ground. The runway was repaired quickly it’s an important airport
@@susan7775 Oh your husband is so brave, if I were in that situation I would probably faint immediately because I was so scared
@@visiontv68 Oh that makes me happy, of course the loss is extremely painful
14:30 someone was eating a meal while watching SURGERY on TV when the Taiwan earthquake struck? Eating while watching surgery. Madness.
I had to check the comments to see if everyone else noticed that. 🤣
I'm surprised you left out Alaska (especially the Nov/Dec. Quake of 2018. They called it a 7 point something but the building and town I was in was over an 8 pointer. The entire roof collapsed and the ground spread AND pushed together making mini mountains in the ground. I was injured but didn't say anything cause I needed to work. Washing your hair with multiple scabs sucks to say the least
Should there be stricter building codes in earthquake-prone areas?
I lived in Japan for a while and also bowled while I was there. One of the rules that everyone is acquainted with is if a earthquake strikes, the frame is nullified, and the frame is re-rolled as soon as things quiet down.. So if you have a 7-10 split that you know you can't pick off and and earthquake hits, consider yourself lucky.
It's scary to think about experiencing something like this firsthand.
Living in Toronto, we don’t feel any earthquakes, I felt my first one while visiting my in-laws who lives in El Salvador. It was a strangest experience, we were sitting in the living room, having lunch, and out of the blue. I felt what I can best describe as static electricity in the air, but not quite. All the hair stood up on my arm, and a few seconds later a 6.2 earthquake hit. It was the first time I ever felt one, I panicked and ran out of the house. Everyone stayed inside and we were laughing at me. It happens to them so often they don’t even flinch, but I could barely stand up. I’m not a geologist, but I do know there’s different types of earthquakes, this when it felt like the ground was going sideways and up and down at the same time. It only lasted a minute or two, the homes in their neighborhood are designed to withstand it (they’re not poor) so there was no damage, except my nerves, BUT, a huge shanty town built into the mountain side of San Salvador, the capital city, only about a half an hour away from us was completely destroyed killing hundreds, but we didn’t find that out until later on. The in-laws had a really good laugh at the gringo running in fear while they sat there, sipping their coffee! I’ve since been back 10 times, and felt two more quakes, a little less powerful than the first one, we got really lucky. We were driving on the highway and literally five seconds after we pass a very steep hillside, a giant boulder crushed the car behind us, that came falling from the hilltop! So it’s no laughing matter, even they were afraid that time!
Yo wassup big fan luv ur videos ❤❤
How can technology better predict and mitigate the impact of earthquakes?
7:50 I will never understand how electronics have erased the human self-preservation instinct. You have sturdy pool tables under which to take shelter, but you stand zombified, recording *in harm's way*
Nature's fury on full display in these haunting videos.
There's a documentary on Netflix about the 2015 Nepal quake called "Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake" that tells the story of the resulting landslide/avalanche hitting all the climbers at Base Camp on Mt Everest, the story of a well known hotel (and the family that ran it) collapsing in Katmandu, and lastly, the complete anhialation of LangTang Village.
It also tells the story of a foreigner who was hiking the LangTang valley at the time of the quake, and after getting stuck in the area, was almost killed by the survivors from LangTang Village, after he and his group of 3 other hikers volunteered to go down to where the village had been prior to the landslide, in search of food and supplies. I won't ruin the rest of the story for anyone, but it's a fascinating documentary.
That is a VERY good recommendation. If you haven't seen it, there is also a documentary on Netflix about a group of tourists visiting a volcanic island off the coast of Australia or New Zealand when things go badly wrong. Can't think of the name, but you could find it. About as good as your recommendation in my opinion.
@@TroubleToby3040 I JUST watched that again this morning! It's called "Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari" Those poor people went through hell, and are STILL fighting to get compensation from the companies that didn't make them aware of the increase in activity level prior to their excursion. I read that many are still requiring surgeries, but as survivors, they're the lucky ones, I guess.

@TroubleToby3040 that documentary about the island is fantastic and a terrifying experience for all those involved. Is it called "White Island?"
@@stephanielloyd4053 I decided to put in the "legwork", lol. It's called "The Volcano: Rescue From Whakaari". It's so good I'm genuinely going to go rewatch it right now. 👍👍👍
Nature's anger is scary, everyone should protect the environment and not destroy it. Wishing anyone reading this comment always be safe!
Mexico's power grid seemed to have held up well in that big of an earthquake!!
Are we doing enough to educate people about earthquake safety?
This guy always posts interesting things that attract people 😊
These images make you reconsider where you choose to live.
Very good job!❤❤❤
How do earthquake-prone regions cope with the constant threat?
Serious video ... but I do wish people would shoot video of their disasters in landscape mode. You know ... for science. Thanks for your great channel!
9:40 is the Richter-9.1 Great Eastern Tohoku megathrust and what you are seeing is liquefaction. It released the equivalent of 6,700,000 megatons of energy and killed many tens of thousands when the upthrust generated huge, Biblical tsunami all along the eastern seaboard.
These clips should be mandatory viewing for anyone living in vulnerable areas.
Incredible!
The story of the wedding in the Philippines is both heartbreaking and awe-inspiring. Nature has a way of humbling us all, and this video does a fantastic job of showing the resilience of people in the face of such terrifying events.
The last video: "..ah yeah this is normal.. ..bit that is not normal.." good sense of humor!😅
That first one was interesting with hearing the earth growl and the fence rattling, that seems like it went on forever. All of this is amazing footage 😮 and scary. The sea water coming out of the ground cracks blew my mind 🤯
I was in a 7.1 quake that lasted 90 seconds. That's a long time when Earth is rockin and a rollin😵💫
These vids have my heart pounding in a bad way. Gotta watch in bits and pieces (no pun intended).
The only time I experienced an earthquake was a rare one in Oklahoma. Probably fracking related. The ground shook for less than 2 seconds. Hardly enough time to realize what is happening. Yes, 90 seconds would be a LONG time to deal with that. 👍
These videos serve as a stark reminder of Earth's unpredictability.
*Hi friends, have a nice day!*
21:55 "OMG" 😂
I actually wondered if I'd imagined that! 😅
I expected this video to include the awful earthquake that hit Marrakech last September, but I guess that’ll be for a future video.
The resilience of communities affected by earthquakes is commendable.
22:39 ....an earthquake and tsunami on your wedding day....that should tell them something lol
nice to know u own all these videos 🧿
Those people in the parking garage, holy cow. They are so lucky.
These earthquake videos are both terrifying and mesmerizing!
I still remember that day. I was watching tv than the lights gone. Than the ground beneath me start's shaking. It was Saturday too so many people were in home or went to visit other places. Many people lost their life. Many historical monuments were destroyed. We spend the whole month outside of our home. Living in tents with group of people.
17:56 you tell ‘em man 😂
These videos underscore the importance of emergency preparedness.
The sounds of the earthquake are really terrifying.
The Baltimore bridge was taken out by a nearly 1000ft long cargo ship. Would these bridges withstand that force?
Well built
I don't know about that bridge, but the Golden Gate Bridge was completely undamaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta quake in California (6.9, iirc). The Bay Bridge (Oakland side, cantilever/truss) had one collapsed road panel, but otherwise also stayed up. The San Francisco side of the Bay Bridge--a suspension bridge like the Golden Gate--was fine, as far as I can recall.
See these 2 balloons? The first one withstands me poking it with my hand, but the other one explodes when I poke it with a pin. Amazing.
It's tragic how quickly lives can be upended by a single seismic event.
Seriously dude WTF is wrong with this guy? I'm starting to think this guy is Chinese. 60% of his videos come out from China.
Wow 😲
Nice
We're the first 2 comments👍
How do we balance development with the need to protect against earthquakes?
2 seperate bowling alleys struck and on video, thats incredible. Too bad no one thought to try and bowl during the quake.
Has an earthquake happened, and a tree comes off the tracks and flips😕
🙏¡DIOS MÍO! ¡Rezo para que todos los que lean este comentario estén siempre a salvo!🕍
i don't know what i would do if this was my reality but this would be tough to live on shaky ground
Can we ever truly be prepared for the sheer force of an earthquake?
I LIVED IN GENERAL SANTOS CITY WHERE THE 6.8 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE HIT AFTER 3 TO 4 WEEKS A MAGNITUDE 7.1 EARTHQUAKE ALSO HIT IN SURIGAO PHILIPPINES IT ALSO FELT HERE IN MY CITY..
I experienced the 2022 earthquake while living in Tokyo. It was my first "big" earthquake. It was then that I learned that during big earthquakes the TV turns on automatically and the PA system activates on loudspeakers outside saying "This is an earthquake" (uh... yeah?? xD). My reaction was the same as that guy, which is hilarious to me xD it was like 11pm and my roommates and I were like "welp, guess it's back to bed!"
15:32
I can hear the Chinese EAS Alarm playing in the background
i see a lot in japan how the ground splits and water comes through. i used to think because of japan being literally an island built upon by volcanoes, it was actual sea water, but it's really just liquefaction. still interesting!
I was in a 7.1 quake that lasted 90 seconds.
The Mexico Part is So Violent
Editorializing is way more than I expected.
24:22 "Earthquake... Earthquake..." Like an earthquake really needs an alarm to tell you! 😂
Some people who suffers from balance or continous, dizzynes might need it, tho. Like my mom. She didnt noticed todays tremor and i worry for her not noticing one or getting her sickness worse and making her unnable to put herself safe in case of a major one.
@asedoproject I can certainly understand that. God bless you and your mom!
These videos highlight the urgent need for global cooperation in disaster response.
I loved Cali.but i can't wear roller skates all day in case of earthquakes, moved back to the rock Az.
I'm not criticizing, but are you saying that you do, if possible, "wear roller skates all day"? Like, "all day" all day?
Are there ways to minimize the environmental impact of earthquakes?
That is long earthquakes . 50 to 60 seconds long are scary .
earthquakes are some of the most terrifying natural disasters. most natural disasters, you can see coming. they form over time with plenty of warning signs. so long as you're not caught in a freak accident, most of them are avoidable by evacuation. though that's not at all saying they aren't dangerous or catastrophic!! far from it. i just feel that out of all of the natural disasters, earthquakes are some of the most terrifying. near 0 chances of being predicted unless it's an aftershock, and often the cause of OTHER natural disasters. the most you can do is rush outside to a clearing, hide under a surface and hope for the best, or pray your city has earthquake-resistant infrastructure that is enforced at a government level
even then, depending on where you are, you can get caught in the sudden landslides, tsunamis, wildfires from downed power lines, volcanic eruptions, or (potentially stronger) aftershocks that can follow after a major earthquake
i have an extreme fear of natural disasters, closer to a phobia. but earthquakes? they're among one of my top 3 most feared. the smallest tremor sends me crying and shaking, curling up in my husband's lap
What does the Maryland Bridge disaster gotta do with a earthquake prone bridge in Japan?! I mean how do you even compare the two?! What the hell is wrong with you?!
15:07 These numbers are incredible if you look at measuring intensities. Every point is 10x more powerful that the previous. Anything over 8.0 - 9.0 on the Richter scale is considered catastrophic. Say a 1.0 is 100 Hiroshima atomic bomb stregnth, then a 2.0 is 1000 atomic bombs. A 3.0 is 10,000 bombs, 4.0 is 100,000 bombs, etc. I remember in a class I took that if anything above a 7.5 hit squarely on a city or subject matter, it would be total destruction. It's incredible to think that the Taiwan earthquake in April 2024 epicenter was estimated at 15 to 20 miles deep and 50 to 60 miles off the coastline! Imagine that power at ground level and point on center.
Oh my goodness this is super duper terrifiyng and scary and dangerous oh no.🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯😱😱😱😱😱😱
I just don't get it when people simply stay inside a building when an earthquake strikes. I would make like a ghost and get the hell outta there.
@21:55 who says OMG out loud?
"Unlike the Baltimore bridge collapse" uhhh bro that was a massive ship collision...not an earthquake. Completely different scenario for a bridge to go through. Not comparable.
12:10 The term you're looking for here is liquefaction.
The scale of destruction in these videos is staggering.
Has an earthquake habit and a TRAIN crashed off the tracks and flipped
2:50 when Chile's EAST coast gets inundated, you'll know that was a serious tsunami!
*Hi friends, have a nice day!*
Unlike Cincinnati chili, the Hoosier State's version mixes spaghetti (or elbow macaroni) into the chili, and its consistency resembles soup.
Should governments invest more in earthquake research and infrastructure?
@@visiontv68 One day the earth will simply explode with 10,000 simultaneous earthquakes, tsunamis and volcano eruptions.
Clip #4, everyone else did NOT scream in panic. They seemed remarkably calm
What are the rules if you are bowling during a quake? Do over?

The human cost of earthquakes is evident in these gut-wrenching videos.
Chile 🇨🇱 tiene lamentablemente el terremoto más grande del mundo registrado...9.5 de magnitud !!!.
OhhäMGjeee (OMG) XDXDXD HAHAHAH
can someone ELI5 what makes a city a prefecture?
The bravery of those who document these events is commendable.
CaseOh is probably responsible for the earthquakes happening
It was the tsunami in most of the quake’s. That caused the most casualties.
Way that's not in possible
Ultimately, these clips remind us of the awesome power of nature.
You need to give ALASKA wicked credit
Can architecture be adapted to better withstand earthquakes?
Why not portrait view
It isn’t that bowling shoes are ugly, they have a very smooth surface- including a metal plate in the front- for proper planting and sliding while releasing the ball. You don’t want to try walking outside with them as you’ll end up on your butt!
The water coming up through the cracks in the park built on top of Tokyo bay was an example of liquefaction- where the highly saturated soil underneath moves such that the water comes out of suspension and rises to the surface. It’s definitely an example of why you should NOT build on reclaimed land!
I hear the term "Prefecture Level City" in these videos a lot, can someone explain what that means?
From what I know, the term means it is considered a city in that certain prefecture. A prefecture is similar to a state or province.
Japan never break
😢🎉
The Japanese ten-pin bowlers whose pins were dropped by the quake - would this be classed as a lucky Strike by Mother Nature ?! 🤣😂🤣😂
what abt chile? the 9.5 one?
These videos spark important conversations about risk and resilience.
Why show videos with the ‘clamshell’ effect? Can’t see the full scene and it’s annoying!
Earthquake happened while watching this video😢 (real)
Hahaha what the Spanish speaking gentlemen at the arcade bar are saying.
Yeah, any Spanish speakers here who can translate? I’d guess it’s all the usual stuff… “Wow, it’s still going, tiles are falling, are we safe under here, wonder where the epicenter is…” But I’d welcome a translation.
I was laughing because the translation is roughly f this f this f this, though literally he's saying To the penis lol. You're not missing much.
They are actually cursing lol
it's just bad bad 😅

Vietnam doesnt have any earthquakes i guess?
Nah
-it wasn't the strongest since the late 19th century , 2011 was.
-poor or rich have nothing to do with earthquake damage, buildings become damaged based off height. Earthquakes resonate with buildings based off how tall they are.
This was definitely one of the weaker compilation videos that I have seen.

That implies that bad things never happen to good people. To keep a charitable attitude, beware of the idea that people deserve the bad things that happen to them. We would do better to work on our own faults instead of constantly calling them out in other people.
