In my opinion, E. Elias Merhige goes far beyond the mere experimental cinema to create a unique kind of narrative, obscure but cohesive, as well as He deserves a place among the greatest filmmakers living today.
Illness can set you back years. It's nice to hear he is feeling well and is eager to create again. I hope he considers looking back on The Last Feast of Harlequin treatments that he worked on from Thomas Ligotti's story.
Begotten is one of my all time favourites. Timeless masterpiece of dark art. Hope the trilogy ist finished soon. Three masterpieces ....... Extraordinary director
Can't wait to see what you will come up with next Mr. Merhige! You have an amazing view of what art is, thank you for sharing it with us through your work =D
@ItsJustJosh It's a strain to the eye, yeah, but art doesn't always need to be happy, fun and uplifting. Feeling unsettled, annoyed or disturbed is also part of life and ought to be displayed in art. The allegorical implications of the movie are also interesting to read into.
Really enjoy his comments on art/creative process. Really powerful statement about if you're not going to be a surgeon, then be a shaman. Inspiring. Must admit I find his visual works hard to comprehend.
In the mean time, there’s a few great flicks out there in the vein of E. Elias Merhige... check out “Hagazussa”. Streaming on Amazon Prime. Also check out “The Lighthouse” by Robert Eggers, starring Willem Defoe. Slated for a wide theatrical release Oct 2019.
He collaborated with Hollywood producer Paula Wagner (and an uncredited Tom Cruise) and the result, unfortunately, was "Suspect Zero"... and Merhige hasn't directed a feature film since then. He's not a bad director, but by now it is clear that Hollywood did not suit him. He is best when working with independent studios.
I wish we'd get a new feature from him: IT WAS CRUEL announced with SpectreVision, GAMES THEY PLAY, the Ligotti adaptation THE LAST FEAST OF HARLEQUIN, or the recently announced HOWL. Something!
The goth kid that persisted. Never abandon the old ways, E.!

As an aspiring screenwriter, he has inspired me to write a modern silent horror film!

How is the Lighthouse anything like any of Merhige's work? Just because its black and white
What a cool guy! Very unique films!
I'd like to see him collaborate with a popular, mainstream director or producer and see how that would go
