I don't understand the mentality of not liking music because you didn't grow up on it. To me good music is good music no matter when it came out.

He's not saying that's why he didn't like it. He said that it's just not the type of music he enjoys.

This music gets dated. Some of this shit doesn’t age well if you listen to it too late.
Some albums are classics because of the impact they had on Hip-Hop culture and because they pave the way for other artist.
A Tribe Called Quest didn’t age that well, Nobody listens to it but everyone respects it and it’s legacy.
That’s my definition of a classic.

He never said he did not like the music, he said he wouldn't go back too it as often. If you grow up with an artist/group you have an Emotional attachment to their music, their style, their voice etc. Emotional investment is the difference between a Favorite artist, and just an artist you respect for being good, but not for you.

I didn't grow up with Tribe, I started listening to them when I was 18 (5 years ago,) and their first 3 albums became some of my favorites ever. Their creative and positive lyrics along with the beautiful jazz influenced music convey their message in a way no one else could create, even now. I've shown my friends and exes Tribe and made them fans. They are around my age as well. Some aren't even hip hop fans. So I don't think growing up is crucial with connecting to timeless music.

CLAIMofLife When I first heard Tribe, I was living in the Dominican Republic in the early 90's. My cousin used to make mixtapes and send them over with my dad when he came to visit. The first Tribe songs I ever heard were Award Tour and scenario. Til this day I can how blown away I was. There was a genuine feeling of intrigue as to what was going on in the hip hop scene back in New York and I couldn't wait to move back. Kids around our neighborhood in DR loved Tribe when we threw it on and they didn't even speak English. It was fantastic, it still is.

that's what i never understood Feefo & me the same age.every time the older heads of crew speak of old school hip hop he acts like that it's ancient like it was before his coming of age.like i said i'm the same age & that's the era i grew up on & listened to as a teen it was current & happening during the time period we were kids/teens.I don't fuck with mumble/trap that's the sh*t my upbringing of the 90's hip hop era subconsciously will not allow me to like because it's not of a artistic standard that golden era hip hop set.i once watched a dehh video i can't remember which one but i don't want to misquote what he said but what he basically said is their was no major Latino/Hispanic Hip Hop act's in the '90s.i was like bruh & shocked of him of being Cuban descent he didn't mention Cypress Hill they are of Mexican/Cubano descent they sold 18+ Mil units world wide & they are seminal act of '90s Hip Hop.

This album defied my expectations. It is Tribe at the top of their game. The features are great (Elton John, Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes... what?!)
The production has a vintage quality without feeling stuck in the past. The verses are great. I can't believe I doubted this group. They nailed it.

  • @ilovecody7514

Tribe left us with another amazing album... It's almost surreal but almost seems to perfect that they are ending their legacy here, and the fact that Phife is gone too. This was a perfect album and I wouldn't change a damn thing. I couldn't thank Tribe enough for this album I feel like Hip-hop really needed it... Solid Wall of Sound is my jam, and Busta and Jarobi were abusing tracks!

Personally, out of all the older generation socially-conscious rappers, I think Tribe's production is more accessible than say a Digable Planets, old Common or the grit of Public Enemy. I thought the album was fantastic and as a young Tribe fan I got more than I could've wished for, and I'm happy to have gotten a new record from them in my actual lifetime. I really think this album will and can connect with people 25 and younger.

I think Beezy holds ATCQ to such a high standard that he thinks the only person worthy of being on their farewell album as a feature is Andre 3000. Its not that the other features were bad its just that they havent earned the right (in his mind) to be featured on the farewell album of such a legendary group. So no matter how good or bad the verse is or was there is still that "you dont belong here" thought in the back of his head. A "you haven't earned the right to take part in this farewell".
Just my opinion from watching this.
But I enjoyed every second of this album.

I'm only 14 years old. I was surprised that Tribe made a new album because I didn't expect it. My mom put me on to Tribe and I ended up really liking it and being inspired by it. I've never heard anything like it. Ever. After hearing their new album, I became curious and started researching on basically everything about them. That's basically how The Low End Theory became my favorite Tribe album. Heck, I even own The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders on vinyl. IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS BY NOW THAT I'M A FAN. Seriously, I absolutely love their sixth and final album. It paid tribute to Phife so well while not being too optimistic or too solemn. The features with new artists like K. Lamar and Kanye are obviously proof of torch-passing. Let's not forget the features of André 3000, Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes, Anderson .Paak, and especially Jarobi White. My favorite track on the album is possibly The Donald. I'll definitely get it on vinyl, soon. I listen to Tribe daily on Spotify. Not a single day goes by without me binging on Tribe. I have to say, I feel extremely euphoric and inspired.
Thanks to Dead End Hip Hop who made this review for support and great content.

That flicker at the end hit me. I thought that before he even said it. Such a legendary group came back after all this time, sounded like they've evolved with the times along with us even though they weren't dropping music, yet at the same time I was hit with wave after wave of nostalgia and I'm a 1991 baby. I did my research a long time ago and went through not understanding the minimalistic bars they always had, to cherishing their style as something untouchable in Hip Hop history. They sound perfect on this album. Can't believe Phife was listening.

I didn't grow up on Tribe, but they're easily one of my favorite rap groups. I'm only 20 and I will bump Tribe over mumble rap any day. I feel like Feefo is using his age as a cop out to avoid being bashed for not having the same feelings for this album as everyone else. He just doesn't like the older hip hop sound and that's fine, but I'm glad he shows respect for them. I also feel like Beezy is comparing this album too much to LET and MM. that's what I did when I first listened to this album, and I really did not enjoy it on the first listen as much as I do now. Once you realize it can't be compared to 2 of the best hip hop albums and appreciate it for what it is, you really enjoy it. I love this album so much now. RIP Phife

Cut the "I can't connect with it because it's not my generation" bullcrap. If you can't put that shit aside then you shouldn't be listening to music or call yourself a music journalist. I'm in my mid-20s and I can appreciate and enjoy any era or genre of music. Classic rock, jazz, blues, pop, hip hop, r&b, heavy metal, house, edm, country, etc. It doesn't and shouldn't matter. With that said, I honestly think that this particular album is easily the best hip hop album of the year and might go down as a classic.

    • @CommonSenseless1993
      @CommonSenseless1993 7 років тому +6

***** No shit, but to automatically turn your brain off and reject a certain sound of hip hop and let that ruin your enjoyment of a whole project then that's very limiting for someone who is supposed to be some sort of columnist or journalist for a hip hop website. It's A Tribe Called Quest, not freaking Death Grips or some other experimental and/or avant garde musical artist. I'm just saying that the "generation" excuse is a bogus cop-out for anyone who is reviewing an album. I'm not saying he has to like it but the generational gap shouldn't play a factor.

@@CommonSenseless1993 get off your fucking high horse you dumb fuck. He's not saying he didn't like it because tribe is from a different era. Jet "Among Consequence’s many notable comments and accusations, the emcee called himself “the glue” within A Tribe Called Quest on the group’s fourth album, 1996’s Beats, Rhymes, and Life, which was during the period in which Cons was a member. Specifically, Consequence claimed that he calmed tensions between group members Q-Tip and Phife Dawg. Watching the streamable interview, Q-Tip reacted via Twitter with, “GLUE? I gave the nigga a look.” The quote, directed at Consequence, refers to ATCQ’s including the aspiring, teenaged emcee on their 1993 b-side single “The Chase,” as well as later opportunities."

just want to make a point for those who havent noticed; if you listen close you can hear a very obvious dub and reggae influence throughout this album, not only in the occasional use of patois, but also in the very delayed-out, extended instrumental passages and super sub-low bass work on certain songs like lost somebody. like dub, there are more than a few songs that allow certain passages to repeat while applying delay and reverb to create a smoked out vibe. there are a few songs that seem to go on and on while slowly adding things, taking things away. like on the space program, where phifes rapping of the chorus just continues for the remainder of the track while various elements come in and out, reverb and delay in tow. there are more examples but you get the idea.

I think it is so interesting that the four people ATCQ mentioned in Dis Generation did not release a full project this year (Kendrick's Untitled were throwaways), but we still got so many dope projects from younger rappers. It shows that "Dis Generation" of hip-hop is in good hands.

  • @thelastwriter4000

What is actually something they missed, but was super dope was the small sample of Bonita Applebum, a single from their very first album, on the song Enough. Two songs about their dealings with a lady with a shared sample. One from their first album, and one from their last. It is a perfect callback and a treat for the fans.
