I teach kendama in the high school where I have been a teacher for the past 36 years. I also spread the kendama love at kids camps, music festivals, and any place where there is interest. I’m stoked to say that I have been using all these helpful pointers and techniques when teaching newbies to nail that uber-awesome first spike. I have noticed that in every group there is usually one or two kids who really struggle to pull the tama straight up. I must say that whilst standing in front of them probably works to stop that outward swing of the tama (I hadn’t thought of this strategy)… it must take a leap of faith to do so. I think I would try it if I was wearing a hockey helmet with a face mask🤣. Anyways, thank-you for this great little video. I get a huge amount of joy and satisfaction when I am teaching kendama to others. Ⓜ️ary🇨🇦
Ever since you guys did this tutorial with me at a Sweets tent at a fest, I’ve gotten several strangers their first spike in the same way! Happens often as I play on my school campus, and getting someone their first spike and just teaching them the word “Kendama” is always a really cool feeling
It brings me so much joy to be able to share/introduce people to kendama!!! And the love and lessons it gives to peoples lives. Love what you guys do!!

My 2 biggest tips to get it were to come up from bent position when spiking AND move my hand up to spike the ball.
