    Congratulations, Master Fire-Keeper/Starter! 🔥

Arc, I know you stick to Fir limbs as 1 hour of work gets you 4.5 hours of burn time (450% return). However, the branches only produce 24 minutes of burn time with 10 minutes of work (240% return by hand). However, the Cedar gives a return of 300%, and considering all the time spent walking to locations with limbs, I think you should just harvest the cedar as well. The math supports it.

The way I see it, the branches provide nearly as much as Cedar, but importantly, *without* the tool durability cost.
The tool cost is a pretty major factor. I can only forge 1 hatchet per 8 coal trip, if you assume I can safely use them down to 10%, that's still 8 hours of work/travel and -8 hours of fuel per 30 chops. That means each chop takes 16 extra minutes and gives 16 minutes less fuel.
With these adjustments, the new numbers are:
      Fir: 334%
      Cedar: 216%
And those numbers may be even slightly worse since Frankie gets the burn bonus during firewood harvesting but not during forging.
Perhaps later in the game when I have a lot of hatchets and can efficiently repair them with the milling machine, I'll start incorporating Cedar chops.

@@ArchimedesLP Your math is better than mine. Nice work and I really enjoy the series.

I've been watching Zak's series but I have to skip a lot of episodes since I haven't done the Tales yet and don't want to be spoiled :)

Hey, I was thinking of trying this challenge myself but I was thinking there is no other location that would work. Where else you think this would be possible? I don't think it is anywhere else on Great Bear. I posted a topic on Steam about this.

Someday I might make a video on this but if I were you I would consider the "One match / Olympic torch" version of this challenge where you can keep moving the fire. Just always make sure you leave a safety fire behind while moving, this way you can go back if your torch gets blown out. This is much better as you can explore the whole map(especially important since the burn bonus doesn't work when you switch regions.)
If you really want to do the version with one unmoving fire, I would probably recommend Spence as my first choice, since it would make both forging and crafting much simpler. Metal acquisition might be slightly harder, though, and you'd probably want to turn Scurvy off since there is no fishing in Muskeg(my run doesn't have scurvy since I started before the update.) You could also use any of the outdoor caves in Muskeg or even Poacher's Camp.
Another option would be to base in a cave in Crumbling Highway. That gives you enough time to forge at DP, and you'd have access to a lot of beachcombing. The beachcombing would make it easy to survive forever here, but it would probably get boring with only a handful of reachable regions.
There are other options of course, but things get severely limiting if you go too far from a forge. It's technically possible to survive forever without forging, but it will be harder without bear coats, and cutting access to even more content on an already limited run doesn't sound fun to me.
Let me know if you try some version of this. I'd love to hear how it goes, good luck!

I thought a bit more about this and if you want to do straight Interloper(with scurvy) then I think one of the CH fishing huts near Log Sort would be best. You have easy access to 3-4 coal mines(cinder hills, winding river + DP) and 2 birch locations(Ravine and PV.) Since PV is just up the hill you have access to that whole region for additional loot. The forge trip(DP) might be a little tight but you really only need to forge for 3 hours for the knife. I would forgo the hatchet and just hacksaw fir limbs(I'm even tempted to do this in my run.) And of course you have tons of beachcombing to keep you supplied forever.
There are a few big advantages to Coastal instead of my original recommendation of Crumbling: Fishing hut for protected on-site fishing, larger region(helps with staying in region for the burn bonus while collecting firewood), and easier access to Ravine/ML/PV for additional loot and birch bark. That last part comes at the cost of a more difficult forge trip but I think it's well worth it.

@@ArchimedesLP This is a lot of fun just thinking about it. You have a point with beachcombing, scurvy should be manageable just with the carcasses of dead fish washing ashore after blizzards, so I think one could technically survive in DP with the fire barrel up in the curch. That would make trips to the Riken a non-issue, vitamin C should be renewable. In my current main run I have spawned in DP and found hammer and hacksaw between it and Coastal. It would not be easy to get to cooking level 5 though, and most of the meat available in the region (aside from run ashore fishes) is from predators; plus there's that wolf on the road down from the church which you'd have to avoid / kill constantly. You also have a point on it being boring in such a region, with it being connected to only Crumbling/Coastaland, so being based in CH might be more fun. Still, worth a try :)

Just started: spawned in DP, searched for bedroll and hacksaw in Hibernia and Sketchy's with no luck. I started a fire at the end of day 1 in the fishing hut you suggested. If I'd found a bedroll and hacksaw in DP I'd probably just stayed there for a no-forging run at the church, but since I haven't, and to my knowledge there is no bedroll in CH, I will search for a hammer. I have already found some scrap by beach combing, and I remember toolboxes are plenty when beachcombing so it should be possible, *IF* I manage to find a hammer, to eventually hunt for a bear and make a bedroll all with beachcombed ingredients.
I am not a very expert player so IDK where the hammer can spawn in CH. We'll see. Lots of fun anyway, thanks for giving me the idea!

@@clemvidtube Sounds fun, keep me posted! If you can't find a hammer in CH there's a decent chance in the Ravine too(although it can sometimes be at the bottom which could prove tricky.)
No bedroll sounds brutal! Especially since you won't get the burn bonus while sleeping inside.
