I michelle, I'm Portuguese, from Madeira Island, I leave in the UK, I've been here for many years, when I first arrived in this shores, I could hardly speak English, very frustrating at times, being laughed at by many, also helped by others, I never gave up, my moto: "giving up is not an option", so I carried on, day after day/weeks/months and years, look at my writing, no help whatsoever, as you can see, I write, speak and read without any problems.
Persistence, believing in yourself, one day you'll look back and you will ask yourself(???) "what was that all about?" and believe me, you will feel proud of yourself, like I do.

I lived in Sweden knowing it would be for a year. I took "Swedish as a second language" which was a free class. It was challenging of course, but a great experience. English was the common language in the class, and there were interesting people from around the world.
What? Dan speaks Brazilian portuguese?!?! My compadre!!!! I am from that land and obviously I still speak the language. Otta boy!!! No wonder you guys decide to leave the US to Portugal. It makes so much sense. So much sense.

I'm Brazilian. The way I learned English was reading, mainly books, lots of fiction. Had a few classes to work with expressions, those that don't make a lot of sense word by word and the most important part, don't be timid or embarrassed to ask the locals to help out when you need. Having a circle of friends only speaking in Portuguese is also good. It's all about the hearing when it comes to pronunciation. Good luck!

Definitely keep your formal classes but also get some friends that speak both languages frequently and meet them for a drink when lockdowns are lifted. The amount of random situations you’ll be exposed to will be huge giving you the chance to increase your vocabulary without even knowing because you can keep it casual and just be relaxed, chilling and at the same time learning as a byproduct of that same experience.
Specific vocab for particular situations like shopping, taking a taxi, going to the post office are incredibly useful, so do press yourself if needed to as your future self will pat you on the back quite often.
Even with near perfect domain of the language you still get a culture shock. No one ever teaches you slang, which btw keeps on changing, so you will have to pick it up by ear and you will find some things to be quite bizarre but just embrace them as they come.
One of the worst mistakes I’ve seen foreigners do is to center in their own community and not mix enough with the locals. This is a comfort zone, you should have it but not limit yourself to it.
If you’re just visiting the country, for those that are, my advise would be to stay away from complicated grammar and spelling. That can be such a turn off, and the main reason why people quit. In order to enjoy an activity one usually needs to have some measure of progression, otherwise all you are left with is struggling and being frustrated. On the other hand, if you are moving in, you will have to deal with bureaucracy like contracts, and in that case mastering the written form of the language will be invaluable. Stick to your guns and jump in. It only stings at first, once you get enough vocabulary you will evolve mostly by yourself but it will take reading and especially writing. Reading is a good exercise, but it’s a passive one, I find I cannot retain information as well as when I write. And lose the spell checker. Use it after you’ve written your text to highlight your mistakes and learn from them.
Regarding pronunciation, my advise is to listen, don’t interpret what you hear. In your native language there are always similar sounds that people tend to fall into. You then mispronounce the words and develop a habit of saying it that way and it will take much more effort to correct it later on. It very much depends on how close to perfection you want to get. For plenty of people just enough to get by is quite alright.
And finally, be well humored, don’t be afraid of making mistakes and learn to laugh at your flaws. Everyone makes them but some people freeze up with fear of making mistakes while engaging in conversations with others. So much so that they start to isolate themselves and the experience becomes horrible when it doesn’t have to be.
Anything you need from the Portuguese just great them first and then ask away. Don’t beat around the bush. If we can help you we will, if not don’t be offended if you get a flat no as an answer. Europeans are more direct than Americans, and it doesn’t mean that someone didn’t like you. They might be in a hurry, being under plenty of pressure or simply having a bad day. Or they just don’t have the information you need.
This is where coming from a Brazilian background really doesn’t help as culturally they do beat around the bush quite a lot. It takes them half an hour to say no while we do it in 2 seconds. Think about it, same outcome in a lot less time. It’s just more efficient in a way. Our definition of rudeness is quite different to theirs. It’s very common for Brazilians to complain that Portuguese people are rude. Believe me, when we want to be rude or mad at someone you cannot misinterpret that. Think of us as Italians that eat Bacalhau instead of pizza. That should get you in the right ball park. Different people that share a lot of common ground in the way we feel and react.
A very important piece of advice, never criticize Portugal in front of a native. We are fully aware of the limitations of our country, that plenty of things don’t work the way they should and we also experience the difficulties while dealing with services. Once you learn enough you will hear us complain over everything. But we won’t take lightly that foreigners do the same, and I guess that’s pretty much the rule everywhere. As a foreigner if I go to the US and complain about the country to a redneck I better be faster than a speeding bullet, because once he cocks that rifle of his I’ll be able to give a new meaning to the expression venting.
Overall you guys seem to be doing exceedingly well. Hope you stick around long enough for this pandemic to fade away so you can experience the country in it’s natural state. You will love the popular saints festivities in the Summer along with plenty more we have to offer.

Liz forgot to tell you that the S at the end of the word can have yet another pronunciation: it's pronounced ZH (like English "plea*s*ure") when the following word starts with a voiced consonant (d, g, m, etc).
Eg: "copos de água" (glasses of water), pronounced " KOP-oozh d'AH-gwa "
Very good pronunciation. For real. Muito bem. Agora só tens que praticar no dia a dia.
Hi Michelle, you are going great speaking Portuguese. You will see that people on the street and shops will appreciate your effort to speak our language, even if you make some mistakes. Don't worry about being perfect; lots of Portuguese don't talk the language correctly.

@@HoneymoonAlways Only writers, poets or experts may speak perfect Portuguese, to know all the rules of the Portuguese grammar and all the exceptions is hard even for natives.
Those who come from Rio de Janeiro I think, should easily grasp portuguese from Portugal because of the way it's spoken in Rio.

Hi Michel I’m in the USA wanting to move to Portugal when my husband retires. To prepare I’ve purchased the Michel Thomas program it’s conversational. Maybe try that out.
Olá, in portuguese PT we don't use the designation "abobrinha". We use the french word "courgete". Abobrinha is portuguese BR.
In Portugal, abobrinha is just a very small "abóbora" : )

You can also take a portuguese course for free at one centro de formação- professional training center on IEFP, the national public service of job and professional training, near you. Best regards.
Intensive classes are an attractive concept, but the reality is our brains get fatigued too quickly to make it an efficient way of learning. There is data on the subject:: 90 minutes is our maximum load.
As a teacher, I think you can definitely stretch this number if you give a lot of fun and entertaining reinforcement activities, but the principle of diminishing returns is certainly at play.

I’m speaking basic Brazilian Portuguese and will retire there. I am in Lisbon for this month - I was excited when I found this video because I would like to get better at Portuguese. Wondering if you have a recommendation for a grammar and workbook or.. if your experiences have branched out beyond the classes?

I took 3 months of part time online classes before I arrived. (A1a-A2B). Then when I arrived in Lisbon I did the intensive class with the same school for the B1 level. I also have a tutor a few times a week so I’ve tried it all. 😊
After a month of intensive I’m going back to online part time because it was a little too much for me. 4 hours a day 5x a week and now I’m back to 2 hours, 2 times a week.
Love hearing your experience, especially since you’ve tried them all! Do you mind sharing who you did / will do the part time classes with?
@@HoneymoonAlways I did full time and part time with the Lusa School in Chiado. I used italki for my tutor. I recommend them for part time online but the full time in person they were not organized and it was kind of a mess…long story. If I go back to full time I’ll use a different school. Especially since we just bought a house in the Saldahna area so I’ll pick one closer. 😊
Dear Honeymooners and followers, speak portuguese as you do, better or worse, doesn't matter. Its really a sort of an honor that you are trying, because it isn't easy. Let me tell you, as a portuguese since birth, that most portuguese aren't very good at it either. And I am not good in inglish and speak it and even write it here where everybody can see. I allways tell my kids to fight the shame of not speaking correctly and, at the same time allways allow for others to correct us. But speak. What we gain being able to speak to people all over the world is priceless. Lots of love for all of you

Thanks for this info Michelle! Liz is awesome! I’ve seen her on other shows and have checked out some of her beginner videos. My biggest question regarding the different learning methods is cost… while Liz is amazing, her class is quite pricey. How much do the other options cost? Obrigado!
There is a huge range. Classes by the government are free or 20€ a month. Michelle’s class is 150€ for 8 weeks and things go up from them. Private lessons vary a lot as well, but 20-30€ a lesson seems normal.

By "European Portuguese" do you mean there is "American Portuguese"? Is there "European English" or "European Spanish"? I know "Portuguese" and if you want "Brazilian Portuguese".

Mate in English world there are even acronyms for British English (BrE) and American English (AmE), those are the main varieties and it’s quite common differentiate like “BrE” or “AmE”, about Spanish it’s rather common you found out subtitles with “Latin American Spanish” in films (or movies as it’s called in AmE), and many Spanish speakers don’t like this definition because there’s no such a dialect common in the whole Latin America and, at the end of the day what they call “Latin American Spanish” is very much Mexican Spanish. I’m surprised you don’t know this basic things
Pedro, há sim uma enorme diferença entre o português falado no Brasil e o português falado em Portugal (Europa). Para nós brasileiros, pode ser desafiador entender o português de Portugal, já para eles é mais fácil porque assistem muitas novelas brasileiras, assim como canais de UA-cam e já estão mais acostumados com português brasileiro.
On Blogs and UA-cam videos it says that one can get D7 visa with a remote job too but i saw a PDF by VFS global and they didn't mention remote job or freelancing in their requirements.
They mention that you need to have proof of means. Remote jobs and freelancing are just a few ways to show that.
I'm currently taking a Portuguese class organized by Cinnamon of the Driven Spice UA-cam channel. The teacher is Ines Sena and you can get a sense of her teaching style here: ua-cam.com/video/hNFPwxAHSw8/v-deo.html I just started the beginner's course 10/7 and it lasts for 3 months. I really recommend the practicality of her teaching style; she focuses on active vocabulary and not as much on rote conjugation.

@@HoneymoonAlways Bom, não sou especialista, apenas uma espectadora. Mas acredito que vocês poderiam mostrar o dia a dia na cidade de Lisboa e Portugal em geral. Conte os “perrengues” para se fazer entender nos mercados, nos restaurantes, no banco, nos serviços públicos. Mostrem como é a vida de norte americanos se virando em português. Exemplo: vá ao mercado Timeout, e mostrem como é para se fazer entender na escolha da comida, ou mostre como comprar o cartão para usar os transportes públicos, como colocar créditos, etc. Esse tipo de situação cotidiana diverte as pessoas. Se você tiver curiosidade e interesse, posso indicar alguns canais de estrangeiros, que fazem vídeos em português e os canais cresceram por conta da audiência brasileira.

What is not clear to us is the following: After 10 years in Portugal, i understand that we will be subject to taxes of 455% if our income is 50K. Do you have any tax video especially after the initial 10 years in PT coming up ? Kindest regards from South Florida
It is true that after 10 years you will be taxes like any other resident. We have a plan for that when it happens for us if we stay here that long, but it will vary for everyone’s situation.

I suggest in the beginning focusing on numbers and vocabulary more than gender. Because If you get the gender wrong, people still understand what you mean. Numbers are important since many of them sound similar and a mistake or misunderstanding can be costly.

@@zhannakryukova8676 I hate to admit it but I do like the Duolingo format; translating sentences into English (admittedly not the most useful), constructing sentences in Portuguese, and listening to stories. While it's fine to offer so many languages (including some that very few people speak), I just don't understand why European Portuguese is not on their radar. ☹

Yes, it's OK as a first step. I'm not a native English speaker. I learn P. with E. translate. So, I practice TWO languages! Duo is useful tool to do so.

Michelle--I saw both videos and think you're doing a fabulous job. You're an inspiration to me and all your viewers! I appreciate coming from English to a Latin-based language presents many challenges: verb conjugation, different forms of present/past/future, female/male words, let alone PT pronunciation--wow!
On the app front, I'd offer my observations: DROPS only see vocabulary, find some options (e.g., download a lesson) somewhat difficult to follow. Maybe I need to read the manual, except ain't no manual. I believe I found a few BR words but could be wrong about that. MEMRISE get ready for some intimidation. Starts right away w/native PT speakers. That's fine but I find it a little intimidating; IOW You said what? FUNEASYLEARN Download the PT version (BR also there). I understand the pronunciation is the euro variety and recently discovered the "sentence structure" part of the app.
Conclusion: None are perfect. I only use the free versions as some of these are a bit pricey IMHO. Please keep up your wonderful effort to learn European Portuguese. Ate ja! 😀
