  • I picked this up a few weeks ago for $25 needing work. It is in good condition, probably sat for several years and needed a good maintenance.
I ordered all the parts from parts tree and in total am into it for about $110.
This is my 2nd Honda Fg100 and they are great machines.
I wanted to start producing higher quality videos and this is my first one.

You could buy a carb for $20 and not have to bother with the labor. Time is money.

Yes but it would be a generic carb. I'm actually ok with those but if I can I prefer to stick with OEM. I've put more then a few generic cabs on the mantis tillers and after adjusting them they ran great.

Be careful power washing engines, windows etc. The high pressure water loves to get by seals and cause a lot of damage.
Is there a grease zerk made with the same threads as the screw?

I agree...it's easy to get water everywhere or damage stuff. I like to use a wide nozzle 15-20 degrees. I never use 0 degree tips when cleaning this stuff and don't like to use a turbo nozzle either. It's too aggressive and can easily damage parts. Everything I buy is pretty well used and it seems no one cleans or maintains anything. Lately I've been into buying riding mowers and I need to pressure wash them 2-3 times to get them nice and clean. A lot of the time I'll take the top/side tins off to make sure the cooling fins of the engine are clean since if those are covered in oil/dirt/dust that will hurt cooling. 90% of the time the front ends have never been greased and once I grease it, work the linkages back and forth is really frees up.
I'd imagine you could put a zerk in there. I buy a lot of one off bolts/nuts from True Value Hardware/Ace Hardware/Tractor Supply and they have drawers of fasteners and one is a zerk draw. My guess is Honda didn't use a zerk to prevent contamination in the gear box....but that's just a guess.

@@jamesbubnick I found a few zerks in my workshop. I got it in a couple thread turns and was able to grease it that way. I found a cheap harmony tiller, it wouldn't start and the primer bulb was rotted. I got it for $50. It also had the $250 dethatcher kit. I bought a carb, fuel line and a couple spare bulbs for $16 on Amazon. I got it running great.

I have used a syringe to get grease into the transmission you can also use a needle grease gun fitting

Extremely helpful video. I just pulled the FG100 out of my garage for the first time in about 20 years. As the original owner I don't think I'll run into any mystery replacement parts, but it looks like it's time to learn some small engine repair. Just curious - is PartsTree your main source for parts? I noticed they were a bit pricey. I'm looking for genuine Honda replacement parts - any other resellers you could recommend?

I have one of these I fixed up. I'm unsure though, should the tines move slightly slower than how loud the engine is revving? Like, it works, I just feel like the tines look like they move kinda slow when I look at them when pulling the trigger full throttle. I was hoping to find a video on someone else showing the tines moving to compare.

You don't hit the shaft with hummer. You want to destroy the gear in the transmission ? It is crazy.

Enjoyed your video and you seem to be very knowledgeable. One recommendation I would make is to move your camera position so that what you are working on is more visible to the viewer than just seeing your hands and listening to what you are doing.

Thanks for watching and thanks for the recommendation. I'll see what I can do, I've been using an iPhone and the hard part is when working on stuff everything gets greasy.I might need to switch to some sort of different setup.

James how much you spend total for parts I'm thinking of getting one

I'm not sure but probably around $40. I ordered from www.partstree.com and everything was OEM Honda. I probably looked up the Walboro carb kit separately since it was cheaper and literally the same parts as buying individual carb parts from Honda.

Hi James, really nice video.. i wanted to know if i can only replace the Worm Gear, if so how ? The tines were not turning on my FG100 - and when i opened the transmission, the worm teeth are worn out... please let me know if ONLY the Gear can be bought and replacced instead of the whole transmission.

I have seen rebuild kits for the transmission and they are around $200 so I don't think it's worth it. I haven't seen only the brass main gear available separately. Plus because of the age and use of your unit I'm sure all the seals/bushings are worn and if you're going to rebuild the Transmission the entire kit is necessary.

@@jamesbubnick Hi James ,thanks for your response.. i do appreciate it , and you are right .. it is not worth repairing.. however, i did have a 'non working' Earthquake tiller, which i was able to directly fit it in the Honda.. so i m good to go!

@@cvc7395 When your tine gear wears out, its often because the bushing in the drive gear are wearing making poor engagement with the tine. It may not last long. I added a couple washers to beef up bottom bushing.
