- Here's the World War I Flying Ace settling down to pint and a pipe, filled with Samuel Gawith's Squadron Leader. Bit of a pun, eh wot? Squadron Leader for the squadron leader? Ah well - here's my review of a mild English blend with a decent hidden kick. #SamuelGawith #SquadronLeader #TheVirtualPipeClub #pipesmoking
The Virtual Pipe Club is a place for pipe and tobacco enthusiasts to meet together for friendship and convivial conversation. We meet to chat mostly about the hobby (or is it a lifestyle) of smoking pipes - carving, restoring, collecting, finding favorites among tobacco and more. The Club meets online, and brings together members from all across the globe. Each week we host a special guest speaker - experts in the field. We also view documentaries, and showcase the vendors and creators in the pipe world.
Excellent review David. Squadron Leader is one of my favourites and I often smoke it in a Blakemar Briars Sir Douglas pipe, named after Sir Douglas Bader who was a WW2 RAF fighter ace. He had pipes made by Blakemar Briars and they are still being made today. Thanks for sharing. All the best from Scotland 🏴. Garry
Well done sir! A first class review and so very well presented. You have an amazing personality. "Tally Ho" from a Canadian presently living in jolly old England. BTW... I love SG Squadron leader. 👍
I’d just discovered your wonderful forum, so imagine my delight that the first review I watched was on one of my favourite English blends! Great review, Keep up the good Work and I look forward to watching more of your channel.
My absolute favorite pipe tobacco. Just popped a jar of 4 yr old. Happy smokes!
Great review David. For me Squadron Leader is quintessential English blend. If someone hasn't smoke any English blend, I would recommed SL
I agree. It's middle of the road enough to really represent English blends without being too heavy on the latakia.
Gonna try it out. Saw a tin at my local pipe shop here in Little Rock
“Love it, thank you Sir.
watching this again, haven't had this one yet, but when I smoke my 1939 or 1940 Dunhill, I'm an RAF officer watching his Spitfires start against Luftwaffe
this old flight surgeon enjoyed your VPC episode 👍❤️
Glad you enjoyed it! I was having some fun - I was hoping I didn't go too far. ;-)
Awesome, Sir. I really appreciate you and your channel. Very friendly, funny, yet in-depth presentation. Great!! A big hello from Munich, Germany. This one is definitely a damn good English Blend. Unfortunately I can stand Latakia Blends one month max.
Love the comparison with lapsang souchong. There must be a lot of tea drinkers in the pipe community because I’ve been seeing more tea shops use pipe tobacco in their flavor description of various teas. Great review as always!
POW! Snuck up on me!.....this is exactly how SG Winter Time Flake did me!!! I mean i went from watching snow flakes fall (that was the occasion for cracking open the jar)...like a big fat snow ball in the face..i didn't expect it & even had to stop and find me a seat! 😂
Good review, David. Trying my first tin of this currently. I find it oriental forward a bit. Liking it more with each bowl. Carry on!
Thank you so much 😊
Good review David, will add a tin of Squadron Leader to my next tobacco order.
Great review. Haven’t tried this one yet, and you’ve made it sound rather interesting.
Enjoy 🙏❤🇲🇨
thank you, guv'nor, jolly good show
The Squadron Leader is sponsored by Czechs. That's right - the pilots fought during World War II in England. 🍺🎖
jolly good show, commander, keep the Jerry away
Very nice tobacco, somewhere between Planta Presbyterian and Peterson (Dunhill) 965. If you want to beef the experience, try Sam Gawith's Commonwealth - a pure virginia/latakia mix. Happy piping!
If I have less than 3 tins left, I begin to panic. My breakfast smoke.
I also got to know the tobacco not so long ago. Then smoked immediately 3 tins. I have already seen a few reviews about it and I am always surprised that nobody mentions a sweetness. Maybe it's only me but I think it exists. Not dominant but just nice.
Hmmm - Looking back I can see what you mean. Right in the middle of the bowl it does sort of sweeten out a bit. Come to think of it, I think that lull is what set me up for the nicotine punch.
Great review & great tobacco
Thank you kindly - it was fun to review and get to know better.
So nice original review
Thank you 🤗
What are the types of tobacco in this blend besides Latikia? Is it a lower nicotine blend?
👍🍺👌SAMUEL GAWITH SQUADRON LEADER / 250 PIPE TOBACCO
This original recipe summarizes traditional English tobaccos. Pipe tobacco is blended from light and dark Virginia along with latakia and Turkish oriental leaf. The result is a perfect, medium-thick mixture that delivers rich and slowly burning smoke. 250g packaging is not evacuated, we recommend storing in a tobacco jar.👏👌♥
Very nice! I think this description is spot on!
Buzz Rickson should come out with a line of pipes.
Ten - no, 100! - points for the spot on obscure war movie reference! seriously, well done. And btw I agree with your idea. ;-)
Top hole old bean what what what what...toodle pip
