My golden retriever at 13 had an anal gland tumour, we had moved to a small town 4 years prior but kept our vet who did his yearly checks and vaccinations they wanted to do an ultrasound for £1000 and then monitor it due to his age etc but we decided to get a second opinion from a local vet in the town and that day we went in we happened to get the Yorkshire vet (a well known vet in the U.K.) looking after our precious pup we were so great full for his knowledge and experience and decided to get the surgery done and it only cost a little more than the other wanted just for an ultrasound.
I couldn’t find any advise from pet owners that had given their dog the surgery or what aftercare would be like other than the vets advice. His tumour was very big they managed to get a clear edging of skin around the tumour when it was removed and was told it hadn’t spread to his lymph nodes luckily. The only symptoms he had was licking his behind which eventually became excessive we got him at 11 weeks old and he was so lucky he’d never had any health issues apart from his ears now and then. The surgery went well but by god was the wound awful. To start with he was leaking blood and feces from his anus but once healed that stopped although that can be a permanent side effect for some dogs but his stitches opened and they didn’t want to redo them so he had a hole to the side of the anus where feces would leak out as well and with it being a wound I was concerned about infection so i was literally following him around all day and up at night every few hours to clean him but you can’t get the wound too wet either so was a real juggling act. As the vet hoped the wound healed from the inside out. We ended up feeding him once a day for about a week so not as much feces was passing though the hole to help it heal quicker and wished we had tried this sooner. It took around 6/8 weeks to be back to how he was.

@@DogtorPete My dog is ten years old, a Ridgeback-Pit mix and just started dragging her lower a short time ago. Problem is if she knows you she loves you, other than that won't play well with others which makes going to the vet a problem every time. Question is if possible for home treatment how much pressure is required to express the gland that will not harm her. Sorry for being long winded but she is special to us.

Thank you for this great, thorough information. It pays so much to hear these things from a professional and now I will truly be committed to keep my dog healthy. He is a corgi and is quite fat, although he has lost some weight this past week because of a diet change. About two weeks ago, I thought he had anal sac infection because he was scooting and putting his tongue in and out while doing it. Our vet said it was just a skin infection and gave him antibiotics and medicine for pain. I still think it may be anal sac issues although he is better now and no longer grumpy. We changed his diet from pure kibble (he is now 7 and has been kibble-fed all these years) to mixed kibble-chicken breast. We also got these pumpkin kibbles and added them to his diet. Is pumpkin good to prevent anal sac infection? If it is, do I buy raw and cook it, or is canned pumpkin good enough? What vegetables are good to prevent anal sac infection? Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for this explanation. Everything else Ive watched didn’t explain it well enough. My first dog is a small mixed. Reed dog and is 16 years old and has never had this issue. She also gets groomed 3-4 times a year. My 2nd dog I got 4 years ago and is 5 years old has had this occurred for the first time in March and then a second time again in July. She’s been under quite a bit of stress as our entire family has been due to a cross country relocation. She’s been separated from her pal our older dog and she no longer has the big backyard to run in. I can’t help to think that stress may be a huge contributor to this new development for her. I’m also considering changing her diet to something more nourishing for her. Anyone have diet recommendations? I. At a loss.

I have switched my dog onto raw, hopping it would help. Although it does seem to be better than it was she is still licking and the odd scooting. The vet showed me how to express but I can’t get anything out. We used pro fibre from the vet and initially helped but not for long. I’ve heard of stool rite and read that some gland issues can be due to toxins through food. Her poo was good since the pro fibre but not enough to express her glands as she went. Her poo is better I think on raw. I don’t think she is licking nearly as much since she has been on the raw but still does. I read if it’s toxins it can take a while for things to improve. She has been on raw for about a month. I also use natural treats like JR pate and I make my own with gram flour, ground porridge oats, sweet potato, liver, chicken, peanut butter. Natural chews like pizzle sticks, Turkey necks and lamb legs. Just to add, my dog only started suffering with at about a year old. She is now 2. What would be your views on anything I have mentioned. Any advice on anything I should steer clear of in her diet.

My dog has excess glandular leakage a lot. Every few days she smells like rotten fish. Even after vet express she will have this for several days even after washing the area. 2x per month expression plus 16 days out of the month she still smells, per my notes. They haven't found anything inside with the rectal exam. She's very fit and active dog. Is there another way to take a closer look inside maybe with ultrasound? Maybe they missed something? Thank you for this excellent video. I'm not sure if you will still respond to questions but I hope you can answer my question. My pug is almost 12 years old. She looks really good and youthful, and is not overweight. However, because she has gone blind over the past 2-3 years, she will no longer go for walks and only walks around our house (with stairs) and outside our large backyard. Both anal glands were becoming full on a monthly basis and now it has gone from every 3 weeks, to every 2 weeks, and we are seeing vet EVERY week now. I have made some changes to her diet and one gland seems much better. But the other gland had become very narrow and hard. She had a flush over a year ago when the gland was infected. There doesn't seem to be any signs of infection, but the gland is getting worse. Also, just in the past 4-5 weeks, I can see that it has become much more uncomfortable, probably painful, during the extraction, which is very difficult for the vet technician due to the narrowing of the gland. Because of her age and her issues with a narrowed trachea, my husband and I are reluctant to put her under for surgery so we don't know what else to do. We switched her to Hills Food Sensitivities d/d which seems to have helped the one anal gland. I noticed you recommend Hills Digestive i/d....should we switch, or are the two foods similar? The i/d we have her on has 6% fibre. Should I try adding more fibre to her diet? If so, bran flakes or raw fruits/veggies, which she loves. She has bad skin allergies as well, and we only feed her the specialized food/treats and some fruits and vegetables (very little) as per the specialist's request. She has been on immunotherapy drops for a year now but they don't make a huge difference. I think most of her skin issues are food related + yeast perhaps, but the specialist does not agree with me. Any suggestions would be so helpful. Thank you, and sorry for the long message but I want you to have all her background info.

This problem is completely reversible throw diet. Grain and chicken are most often the offenders, and all mass commercially produced pet food-pebbles. Raw diet is best for dogs but not always convenient and easy to apply because will still need monitoring from a Vet. Steamed carrots, butternut, squash, little brown rice and oatmeal, fish and read meat, raw organic yogurt, homeopathic remedies and supplements. This will lower the levels of inflammation of the GI track and your pet will no longer have this problem.

The first time my 11 year old chihuahua mix had problems, he was on grain-free kibbles. I switched to raw and feed carrots, butternut squash, broccoli, etc. as well as organic plain yogurt. He does eat chicken, but is otherwise completely healthy. I take that back... he has shown signs of reflux on both foods, so I’ve been adjusting his diet. Anyway, he had another anal gland rupture a few weeks ago, on raw diet. Our other dog who is smaller and about a year younger is completely fine. The weird thing is that he goes from no visible sign to scooting and rupture within 24 hours. I don’t normally spend a lot of time looking at my dog’s butt...I had given him a bath and saw that everything looked fine then.

Thank you so much for your very helpful information.
I am starting a raw diet for my dear dogs now.
According to research, horrendous, inedible ingredients have been detected in some commercial dog foods, which have been boiled at very high temperatures. Often, tons of decaying animal carcuses are left for hours in the searing sun, before being processed; along with pharmaceutical waste, flea collars, and other alien objects, which all find their way into our beloved pets' food.
No more commercial pet foods for my dear canines. If it is not fit for human consumption, why would we feed it to our extended, fury family members?
Would we lead a full, long and healthy life, should we consume such, until the end of our days?
      Thank you, once again.

I've never known what expressing a dogs anal glands meant until recently, and frankly, I don't have the stomach to do the internal version, only the external version.
My dog is 4 years old, he's a maltipoo and has a sensitive stomach, so he vomits when excited, neurotic or when he eats something like rice and chicken. We moved him to the Purina Pro plan since it is approved by the World Small Animal Vet Association. Blue Buffalo wasn't it turns out...
He always reaches back to lick his butt, and each time he does this, it's in front of me and I call him out on it. He stops when I go "Na-uh-uh!" Or "Stop it." Spot gives me a look like he should have every right to do it, but he listens regardless. Butt-breath is not pleasant... Can a groomer treat a dog's anal glands when the problem is undiagnosed or unknown, but the signs such as licking is apparent?

My dog had this, swollen Abcess on one side. It was very hard and red.. i only applied a hot towel on the are or washed her anal region with hot water once a day. It popped after a couple days and i pressed out the puss and cleaned few times a day with some saline solution and she was fine after that. I changed her diet and she had diarea for 1-2 week and she got it again. So i now know she gets it when she's had diarea for a while.

My 10yo dog has a red swollen anal. It made him lose apetite. The dr did the external anal gland process, some liquids came out. He gave some antibiotics to take home. He ate some chicken at home after the visit. But the day after he didn’t eat again. Saw him licking his butt and saw the liquid coming out again. I tried to do the external process, but nothing came out. Im afraid to do the internal one as his anal is swollen and kinda blocked. How many times do i have to express his anal glands, and can i do the internal process while its inflamed ?

Back in the 70s my cousins dog was doing the arse rub and my uncle said he's sort it out so a very large very bad tempered German shepherd was given two or three strong beers and two fingers up his arse and a good squeeze I'd say a good half pint of the most terrible smelling stuff fell out leaving all the children and most of the adults running for cover yes folks Glasgow 1978 hottest summer on record 😊
