I kept getting that fishy smell with my terrier cross. He was playing with my grandson one day and we heard a loud yelp. I don't know if he'd fallen onto his butt or if it had just emptied itself but we had a pool of fish smelling clear liquid on the floor. Now a few months later we're smelling it again which brought me to this video. Thankyou for showing us how to do it x

Here’s a handy tip for those who can’t bring themselves to express those glands and don’t like having to take the dog to the vet to (temporarily) rectify the problem… put whole flaxseeds in their food! The flaxseed has a tough outer layer that doesn’t get digested, keeping the seed in its whole state. As they pass through the dog’s rear opening, they press on the anal glands, gently expressing them while the dog does its business. There’s no mess, no fuss, no having to damage your relationship with your dog, no more fishy smell and your pooch won’t have to excessively lick the area… or do the dreaded “bum drag” on the lawn… or on your carpets! 😉❤️

@@VelvetyMoon, I make my dog’s food in bulk and divide it into thirds, I put one container in the fridge and I freeze the other two until needed. Each batch of dog food weighs 3.5 to 4kg, to which I have added about half to three-quarters of a cup of whole flaxseeds, and I use flaxseed/chia/hemp meal to thicken the gravy in her casserole (yes, she’s a very spoiled pooch, indeed). I also suggest that you have a look at the nutritional requirements for your breed of dog (my dog’s breed is recommended that their food be 60% meat and 40% vegetables). Apart from alleviating the obvious problem, I like making her food so I know exactly what’s in it (she also has a whole heap of curry spices in her food, as well as the standard parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme… they all have medicinal value). Let me know how you go 😉❤️

I know it’s off topic, but I’d love to hear your ideas on treating skin issues in dogs. Our lab/St.Bernard loves swimming in the river. Twice now he has gotten swollen eyes, and redness, and itching of the skin. I believe it could be from bacteria from all the birds that flock to this area. I’d love another option besides antibiotics and antihistamines.

On the subject of fish and fish oils. I've got a black cat who has been suffering with the most awful dreadful skin allergy really really bad and vet could not work out what it was - tried all sorts nothing worked apart from big doses of steroids. Been giving her a large dose of salmon oil every day for the past 2 months or so and her allergy has almost cleared up, her fur is looking gorgeous and has almost regrown and she is finally starting to look like the beautiful black shiny girl that she is supposed to be.
Yes the roads really aren't good they actually eat away at cartilage ... I think I also heard cartilage and bone but steroids are not good .
Almost anything you need for your pet you can always ask the doctor here what He suggests plus he's got so many videos .
Maybe also give your dog a little bit of CBD oil every now and then .
Because good quality CBD oil can be pricey I've heard of people buying the kind for pets and using it for themselves or is it vice versa ?
Same with my dog she started having horrible allergy symptoms she was losing hair in chunks we so we got her on a high end salmon oil and her coat came back so lush

I sure am glad I love tea, I now have BOXES of tea for Sanza (Pug). She was scratching so much last week and just 2 1/2 days of this home remedy videos we have managed to take control of the corn chip smell. Now that I know what causes the smell, and that IT IS NOT normal for dogs to smell like that I am able to knock it off with the coconut oil/ vinegar mix that I keep in a jar.

@@VeterinarySecrets Absolutely Dr. A.J, it has to be done and they do indeed feel so much better. We had two dogs, both lived to be just months away of 20 years old. Both filled those anal sacs nice a full as a gift for just me lol - often. I consider myself an anal expect expresser LOL! OMGOSH how I dreaded that monthly chore, but well worth it for their comfort and anything they sat on.

ROFLOL. Tula is the greatest. Laughed too much to hear the Doc and had to re-watch. My dog likes to come into the house smelling like he rolled around in something dead, but there's never anything dead to find in the yard. What causes this and how do I fix it? He's a Lhasa Apso.

I didn’t know that the fishy smell was because of the anal glands. My dog had her glands expressed last week than the next day she had a bath, but I had noticed a fish smell on her. Thank you for showing how to do it, but I don’t think I have the guts to do it myself. 😁😁

Oh thank goodness I wasn't sure what was causing that a part of me thought it was something with the flsh based kibble but I really didn't know it's been going on for a while now.
My dog was releasing hers quite a bit, which I knew wasn't normal. It turned out she had an infection in her anal glands, which was something I couldn't treat on my own. Just a heads-up. Hope your fur kid is okay!

What did you use for cleaning?
My past vets have an assistant do this and charge about $50. Though it's a 10 minute job, I choose other things to do at home. My large dog is 16 and had very high liver enzymes, lethargy and wouldn't eat 6 months ago. He was scheduled for euthanasia but Sam-e, milk thistle, dandelion root, CoQ10 brought him back. He's moving slow, but in no pain, and still enjoying life in overtime eating organic food and going to the park and beach daily.

Oh, jeez. I have just started giving fish oil and I walked by him this morning and I thought he must've burped. 😂 But now 😢 He's a 6 yrs old rescue and he must be scared. He has a bite history, so I'm not touching that. I've only had him 2 weeks. He needs help with allergies and ear infections. I appreciate these videos!
I’m here because my puppy was just chillin. Then he heard a noise upstairs and flew across the living room like a rocket. Sounded like he ran into the china cabinet or something. Not sure. But I went over to him and he seemed a little scared and was licking his paw. Then I noticed..... omg. The overwhelming smell of fish. (I know he didn’t smell like that a few minutes before). Then I thought maybe it was his breath ( thought maybe a baby tooth was rotting or something). After watching this..// I verified that yep.... the smell definately coming from the other end!!!! So yeah. I’m guessing he really did scare himself. Thank you for this. I had no idea about this. I cleaned his bum and his tail. He’s in his kennel for bedtime. Hopefully it was only because he got scared. Thanks for the video.../ now I know to also be aware in case there is actually an issue down there.
I just read someone's comment saying mixing flaxseed in their food fix the issue itself. Is it true ?
I’m a mobile groomer and perform this with a squirt of shampoo or conditioner. That way it doesn’t stick. I only do external expression. Started using a double layer of paper towel instead of allowing it to go into the grey tank water 🤢

My 1 year old dog has really bad anxiety and nightmares so Everytime she gets scared it smells so bad
My mini dashboard was born with her hip / pelvic not completely together so she constantly has anal gland issues do to not being able to put pressure on that one leg I have tried every dog food out there even Rx need some advice on what may help her she seem to have allergies to pumpkin and pre probiotic and probiotic as well she just turned 7this month bless her heart constantly having to watch the one gland it gets infected so easily so any advice would be greatful thanks

Canine Distemper and Parvovirus are threatening diseases in Dogs. Can you do a video on them on how to prevent and treat them in dogs holistically without overvaccinating them ? Since titres are costly and aren't easily available in India.
I have my groomer express my dogs glands about every month but she still gets that stinky smell any supplements that would offer extra support?

Yes, thats why they do it. Sometimes it's becsuse constipation.

Please help me. My cats legs are paralyzed. So he can not walk. But that's not the real problem. He pees so much . like he start peeing and its going on and on for hours. It's not like he pees continuously bt like he pees with a break o some minute. And when ever i try to massage his legs he pees. My bed is full of his pee. I am having so much pain for this. Janet... I know you are trying to be funny but if there is some seriousness... and there is really fritos smell... have you treated them naturally for yeast?
Wash them in selsum blue! He recommends this.
1/2 Apple cider vinegar and 1/2 water in a spray bottle, make sure not to get it in their eyes, they smell like vinegar while they're wet but when they dry they won't smell like Fritos anymore, works like a charm!
My dog has anxiety and her anal glands quite often express. They are not obstructed or infected, just stinky. I keep a jar of cotton pads soaked in ear wash solution for a quick clean up. She has normal and regular textured poops so I really think it’s an anxiety issue.

It's really unfortunate that viewers seem uncomfortable with this content and have resorted to humor. I mean, yes, humor is fine in dealing with this stuff but this is valuable information that can save you countless $ throughout the life of your dog. If you read this far, I would like to add that:
*Dogs commonly lick their lips when having their anal glands expressed.
*My current dog's glands contain a fluid substance so I put news paper under her before we begin.
*You must be careful not to squirt yourself with glandular excretion.
*If your dog scoots its butt across your carpet, guess what? He's trying to express his glands himself...on the carpet.

Increase EFA's in the diet. If not itchy, consider melatonin
@@VeterinarySecrets he is itchy. Keeps biting himself in a few places like lower back and tail and groin area. And yes I have started giving him sardines and other fish for EFA

Well that explains it! My Aulsky Lagertha snatched my Am. Cocker Spaniel's chicken drumsticks from her bowl and took off with it last night. I took off after Lagertha but she had swallowed it whole! She ran into her crate from there and gave me the most pitiful look... now today she smells like a washed up rotting fish...
Is that ok? I was told that they shoudn t be squeezed cause they will get lazy and need squeezing all the time.
If they aren’t having solid poop then you have no other choice because it will swell and can get infected or even cancerous
oddly enough, after two decades of breeding and raising grand show champion, and weight pulling bullies (pitbulls), ive never had an issue with anal glands until my most recent pup. the odor is one of a kind, to say the least, and smells similar to a genital yeast infection- you all know what i mean! lol. my pup began doing the "SCOOTY BOOTY" everytime she would come in from going outside to potty and that odor would immediately follow and _linger_ for hours.

Hi Doctor, I have a question. I spent over 1000 dollars on my dog's anal gland issues. Out of the blue she started to smell bad from her bottom. I took her to get checked and they said there was not much anal gland fluid there even after expressing she still smelled. The first vet I went to said it was an infection after it was sent to the lab. I did antibiotics and that didn't help then they did an anal gland infusion with antibiotics and she still smelled. The second vet currently said she looked under a microscope and did not see any elevated white blood cells and that It was not infection so it did not need to be sent to a lab. She prescribed an anti-inflammatory and my dog did not react well to it. I have tried anal gland supplements and I am doing the increase in fibre thing to see if that will help which I have been doing for 4 weeks now. I am worried could this be a systemic issue and allergies is this why she smells and but scoots and it doesn't stop? It started when she ate food with chicken in it and I never gave chicken again but after this happened in August she has smelled ever since and the anal glands are not full. I am beyond what to do. I have tried hot compresses and nothing gets rid of the smell and she never had this problem before. I found a person who knows a natural vet who is suggesting I try antihistamines and if I go there that's how they would treat this. Because she never smelled before and she used to butt scoot but never smelled I am worried. What is the best course of action of what to do and do you think that I should worry or go to the lab again when the one vet looked under the microscope and said there was no issues there with infection. I don't know if its just inflammation causing the smell or a systemic problem? I don't want to get rid of the smell only I want to get to the root cause of why she smells and if she is okay. Any suggestions would be great. I love your videos!!!! Thanks!

I treated my dog for an infection and then they checked said no infection but I want to know why I see a light pink like blood color but very light pink coming out, makes me think this is an underlying allergy or something else if there is no infection and it has this color and smells. Any suggestions anybody? Maybe someone will let us know.
@@AP-ty1vl maybe we should be treating our fur babies for allergies? I have recently started giving applecider vinegar with water...and a little coconut oil. He refuses to drink water at all and don't even mention diluted applecider vinegar. This got worse when we started making his food. He's crazy about coconut oil so I use it to get him to drink...smh

Everyone is telling me to get rid of my puppy now because he smells like the ocean
My dog licks herself all over and stinks so bad we have put coconut oil all over we gave her coconut oil to eat with her food, we have tried shampoos from vets stores so expensive! She still stinks like fish and Doritos! What can i do? this has been for years and years she bites herself raw sometimes. I have watched some of your other videos hoping to find a solution. My dog has been putting off a horrible bleachy chemical putrid smell and he is known to have anal gland issues and i have not squeezed his glands in months. I have to lube up my thumb and insert my thumb to find it and its not always easy to drain for some reason thank goodness for both of us it doesnt have to be done but once a month. If your dog has anal gland issues you better start watching anal gland draining videos and buy some gloves and some lube. My dog will try to eat it if we allow him to remain outside with it. We usually take him straight to the bath tub afterwards. Its so nasty but we don't like paying a vet to do something if we can do it ourselves im sure the vets are happy for that😁

Dr. Jones my dog has had knee surgery several times since December. I think this time it was a successful surgery but he will barely eat since the surgery. It’s been 9 days. I’ve tried boiled chicken, scrambled bison, beef tips, scrambled eggs. He will drink goats milk and eat bread or crackers. Any dog food in his bowl (Farmina) or meat, eggs, etc in his bowl and he does this weird head bob in and out of his bowl until he scrapes his nose up and makes it bleed. The vet said he’s just playing me to get treats but I’m very worried. This is very strange behavior. Any idea what could cause that? He acts normal other than with food.
