- So, you found your Yorkie, who was perfectly fine and healthy an hour ago, with a puddle of bright red bloody diarrhea. What does this mean? Is this serious?
Your dog may be suffering from Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Watch this video to find out exactly what HGE in dogs is, what the clinical signs, causes, diagnosis, and treatment methods are as well as what you can do to prevent this scary disease from occurring.
The prognosis is generally good if the dog was taken to the vet and if the appropriate treatment was started in time. The course of the disease is generally short, lasting from 24 to 72 hours, and most patients recover with no long-term complications.
Some dogs may just have a mild stomach upset that will result in one or two episodes of diarrhea, and in these cases, you could give it a day to see if the diarrhea will resolve. But if you notice any other clinical signs, such as vomiting or inappetence, or you noticed blood in the feces, then you should take your dog to the vet as soon as possible, as this definitely indicates that there is a more serious underlying problem.

My dog had pancreatitis over 10 years she died over 18 she had all the symptoms week before I lost her , I didn’t know she was was living me 😢 i took her to emergency vet said she was fine she died 2 days after if they gave her IV she will be here she went in to shock…😔😔😔😔 she hug me before she died;( loved her more than myself ❤

Our dachshund suddenly had this. We took her to the vet first thing when they opened and unfortunately she passed away last week. Her infection was so bad that she was so weak and her organs shut down. The vet said there was nothing else that we could have done to prevent her death but we still do the "what if" scenarios. If you have a dog with bloody diarrhea, don't wait till the vet opens. Go to an emergency vet that is open all night and waste no time. We weren't aware of this condition so we never knew it was fatal. Now, our hearts are literally broke without our fur baby.

I am so sorry this happened to you. My Doxie had this too during the night and passed that was about 20 yrs ago. I had no idea this before. I am very careful now with my Doxies, I have a cam at home when I am out and working. Too this day I still feel guilty she passed this way.

My dog developed this last night. Rushed her through to the emergency vet at 3am and she's doing OK antic she's still in hospital. He platelet level was 69%. If I'd waited until morning, she would not have survived. South African vets ROCK!!!! Very scary illness!!!!

My Yorkie was diagnosed with that. After I stopped brushing it's teeth with dog's toothpaste, all symptoms disappeared. Now I brash only with napkins, without any chemicals.
I use baking soda to brush my dog’s teeth.

my dog just died not long ago, he had all the symptoms mentioned. why have I not found your video earlier
My sweet Labrador had two bouts of bloody diarrhœa after a two day hospitalisation (after I insisted the vets take him in and after he had so many symptoms that I was back and forth at the vet to for months, including pain symptoms) he also had a low platelet count that was dismissed as a machine fault, because he wasn't showing signs of external bleeding. He was discharged with HGE despite not having sudden vomiting, etc. Nineteeen days he went into shock and he was PTS without us which completely broke me. It could have been avoided if the vet took my concerns seriously and didn't dismiss the low platelet level as a machine fault and manually tested his packed cell volume (PCV). It was wrongly assumed he had HGE because other dogs had it. When he was under surgery it was found he had tumours on his spleen and liver and 1 litre of blood was taken from his abdomen, he was bleeding internally, thus the reason for the low platelet level, bloody diarrhœa and the myriad of other symtoms. Given the high rates of hemangiosarcoma (HSA) in Labradors it was no doubt HSA. All this could have been avoided if the PCV and my concern was taken seriously. Therefore I am not always in agreement a dog with cancer will have dark blood in its stools. Pet parents if you are worried about HSA and other cancers in dogs the Morris Animal Foundation do amazing work and research in this area.

My sister brought home a dog and within a week, it started pooping blood and vomiting. She took her to the vet, fearing parvo, but it was negative. The vet said she had a parasite and topped her up on all her shots…but they didn’t say anything further than that. So we brought her back home with no care instructions, medicine or anything. For the past week, she hadn’t gotten any worse, nor better - she still had plenty of energy and was eating/drinking normally, despite her bloody diarrhea. Now, suddenly she’s so much worse, and is definitely lethargic and dehydrated and she’s vomiting more but we can’t afford to take back to the vet. I’m afraid we will lose her shortly if she doesn’t get any better. I’m not sure if she has HGE, but it sounds closest to what I’ve observed, especially with her stool.

Im 99% sure my pup has this rn He had diarrhea yesterday morning Dec 23rd looked like it had a little
Blood in it. after maybe 10 hours and three bad diarrhea poops he started getting real lethargic and now he goes to poop every hour or so with a clear jelly like substance no poop at all comes out just the clear jelly with white in it and a few drops of blood. My wife had me thinking it was a parasite/infection but he won’t eat or drink anything atm. I took a syringe and been forcing water down him every hour or so until the vet opens. It’s Christmas Eve now 3:32 am writing this. I’m just glad I finally figured out what was wrong. Hopefully he’ll be okay. 24 hours ish from bloody diarrhea to the time we get to the vet. I knew it wasn’t a parasite because I couldn’t find one picture of the clear jelly substance poop online and in my head somebody had to have been through this before and posted about it. I just realized the clear jelly substance was his intestinal lining I think. Googled that and found HGE taking him to the vet but we’re 4 hours away from emergency vet. Get there right at 8 am when et opens It’s gonna cost me a arm and a leg I’m sure but we have to get it done today. This is the second emergency vet visit in 6 months of having the little guy. I love him 100% I had a beagle for like 7 years and she never been sick enough to take to the vet. He’s a shitzu poodle and he’s a handful. Hopefully everything worked out for you guys. Geez it’s hard and bad timing.

I wished I watched this sooner. Our 7 month old puppy Sky recently passed out exactly 6 hours and 11 minutes ago. HGE started on Wednesday (it’s Sunday today). We took it to the vet 2 days after.

We had to put my mums 5 year old Lhasa Apso down today with this and we are on holiday, our last day, it's so heartbreaking we have to go home without her. She was rushed in yesterday and they kept her in overnight but they couldn't get her temperature to a healthy level and her blood sugar dropped and she couldn't stand, her body was just too weak and ravaged by this awful illness, I don't think we caught it early enough 😢

Hello doctor thanks for this wonderful ingormative video. My dog ( 3 year yorkshire) just had this a week ago. He is under RX only food. I am scared to switch him back to regular good next week… Im hoping he doesnt have a tumor they only did blood work and fecal test… nothing else I dont get why :(

My dog had this and also low platelets in his blood the vet highly advised that we put him to sleep, gave the impression of survival to be very low but from my own research after my dog was put it would appear that the survival rate is a lot higher than what we got told
My fur baby is also suffering from this bloody stool. She's about to finish her antibiotics but theres still blood in her stool. Sometime she poop fresh blood and it really breaks my heart seeing her like that 😭

Hello doc, early in the morning I go to the vet because my dog is not eating and he is vomiting sticky white with bubbles and his stool is liquid brown. But around 2:50pm, my dog's stool is dark red pure liquid. What should I do?
My dog was not eating properly from 2 days so i started giving him less food but today he didn't eat anything at all so i took him to vet and they diagnosed him with HGE i Said he didn't show any symptoms diarrhea or vomiting but on our way back home he had liquid poop and after a few hours vomiting he is on his medicine now and will be fine in 4 or 5 days
Guys if you think something is wrong with your dog take him to vet as soon as possible instead for waiting for things to get worst

I need help please, my husky mix is going through this now. I went to the emergency vet this weekend and his vet yesterday. They don't think it's an emergency, but I feel like he needs help. He is still drinking water, and eating a bit of boiled chicken and they have him on antidiarrhea meds. Prayers please

My 12 week yorkie has been restless, tummy making noises, vomitted earlier and now has had an ok stool but after that diarrhea and tiny blood clots or tiny streaks in her stool. She is trembling and im keeping her warm,and gave her 2ml Pro-Kolin to help settle her stomach. It hasnt been 24 hrs yet since it started but am hoping for an emergency vet booking this morning.

What is wierd, is this is such a strange disease or dog problem, that this was not something that happened in the past. It's all new and it seems like a lot of dogs are starting to get it. A lot of vets haven't heard of it until the last couple of years when dogs are getting a lot of problems with HGE, GI and Parvo. So it's probably something in the air, something in the food or treats, sensitivity with it, etc. Just like the crap the government is allowing to put in our food and air.. They're still trying to figure it out just like covid.
Right! I have also noticed that dogs (stray dogs) that eats leftovers are more healthier than those dog u feed with expensive dogfoods 🙄

I know that in my dog it's a nervous condition. Not contagious. It was a very expensive vet bill. I was at the lakehouse which I not where his vet is. They tried billing me 1200.00 I ripped that bill up since they had not done anything but come in and say. 150 after hours 150 blood work and 150 x-ray. Smh. NY pup and u were both on the floor in fetal position. I almost lost my cool. Then the bill mysteriously dropped in half.
He's a survivor tho! Just have to keep him stress free. What a scary couple of days. But he came out of it after fluids and antibiotics. Which they said for 15 days but only gave me 5 days of it. Ya if I can help it I'll never go back to electic Alabama vetinarian

My Aussie has this Friday night today is Sunday night. She threw up so much before I got home. She drank a bunch of water. She was happy to see me.but I noticed she had to throw up so I picked her up and she threw up so much. I was like alright that must be it. I was talking to a vet online with “just answer” and at that time she settled to poop and explosive bloody diarrhea with cartilage/flesh like substance just poured and more and then brown dark brown and so I took her to the vet. South Dakota ain’t like California you gotta pay your money up front. I had just paid my rent and only had $700 I couldn’t get her blood work or X-rays after her visit charge, parvo charge, and medication charge. So currently she is in diagnosed but I am 100% they treated her for this HGE because they sent me home with antibiotics. And they gave her antinausea injection, fluid subcutaneous, antibiotics. And prescribed hills I/d and bland diet.
She doesn’t change. Hasn’t changed when she is sick or not she’s always playful and always wanting to play.

I know that this is acute and can happen instantly but is it also common for it to be progressive over a few days? 3 days ago my Havanese started having the squirts, regular small amounts of diarerrhea. We limited his food intake and gave him medicine but suddenly this morning his Diarrhea was bright red. Is that normal to get HGE after a few days of simply being poorly?
Yes. It's scary too. My dog was fine one then within a couple of days of her not eating so much, not pooing, I realized something was wrong, the next day she had all the scary symptoms.

You should have taken your dog to the vet ASAP to be at ease of him being diagnosed and given meds to help him. DO NOT wait 3 days of all things for you can loose your dog to this HGE. If your dog had bright red blood in his fecal that’s a red sign of an emergency. Why come on here and ask questions and waste the time to get your dog help. BLOOD coming out a dog whether he is vomiting it or in his fecal calls for an emergency vet.

HOPEFULLY, you got him to the vet ASAP. You do NOT wait around and HOPE because this is a life or death situation.

My dog ate a rotten fish. And it is possible he also swallowed a fish bone. Now, he's vomiting a white liquid (I thinks it's his saliva) and he's no appetite, he only drink water. He also poops pure bloody liquid that was thick. Please can you give me a home remedy? I'm having a hard time because there's no veterinarian here in our place.

Dog desperately needs IV fluids overnight. If it's for financial reasons a vet can often work out a payment plan, just please have the vet save them! When my pup had this, it was a 60% chance of surviving at home vs a 97% chance of recovering with the overnight in the hospital. After the overnight he bounced right back to wonderfully healthy!
My 14-week-old male Rottweiler puppy went to the vet They did a wellness check gave him flea medicine and dewormer pill and he had diarrhea that never stopped I gave him the chicken and rice pumpkin yams more chicken and rice and a week later is still going, He's at the vets overnight for now What did that dewormer do It caused something or triggered something He's never had diarrhea before? The same happend to my 4 year old Rottweiler, I dewormed him and shortly after he was diagnosed with HGE, the doc gave me medicine and I’m currently sitting with him 3:00 in the morning because he won’t stop vomiting and having diarrhoea.

Could surgery cause hge post op? My dog had a tooth out within less than 48hrs she had the big bloody poo :-(

Hello @doctorpete I truly hope you can see this question ASAP, but my mom's yorkie almost 1,000 % has this going on 24 hours now. We absolutely cannot afford emergency vet cost, so I started pushing 5mgs of pedialyte and ½tspn of keopectate. Plus plenty of water. Please God tell me that this will be enough!!!!!!!!?????

@Erica TA he did! By the grace of God! I just pushed electrolytes and small amount of keopectate. And kept giving water. I was so so scared!
No vets are open on sunday and I have to wait til Monday to take my pup... Please tell me your mother's dog survived...

My 6 month old dog wont eat for 2 days and vomits once, on the 3rd day he poop bloody liquid, we sent him to the vet, he's negative on parvo, bacteria and infection but he died on the 4th day, what could it be? The vet just told us he ate something bad, which I doubt, Im very careful on feeding them, I know foods that are not allowed for dogs. Its really painful, I miss him so much and I blame myself for being stupid.

I’m so sorry this happened! I was told by a ry good vet (when our dog went in for HGE) that unfortunately it could be caused by almost anything. She said of course it could be a change in food or eating something they aren’t supposed to but also could be something he caught from being outside or even stress. Idk how truthful that is but I just know it happens to a lot of dogs from my own experience/the comments… :( I’m so sorry for your loss

Hey Hercules. It really depends on the type of dewormer that you use. SAFE-Guard, which contains Fenbendazole, is safe to be given to both pups and pregnant dogs during any stage of pregnancy.

Hey my dog bella eats cat crap and litter ! I called vet. She said give immodium for 2 days. Then chicken and rice for a day. Today she tried to out 3 times and couldn’t. Immodium blocking her up and that’s what vet wanted. And hopefully next stool is normal.
My dog had diarrrhea for 2 days every 3 hours the third day diarrhea with blood and mucus, that’s when I called the vet and was told to do this.
If it doesn’t clear then to bring her in on Friday. She is a 115 pound cane corso
