I love this. Thaank you! ❤️ I'm using himi miya gouache and oftentimes I just mix colors then pray it'll turn out great 😂
Hahaha don't worry I used to do that too 😂
It's because a lot of the himi colours are made up of multiple pigments! The Rose colour is a mix of red and violet (so don't add yellow unless you want brown) and the Ponceau is a mix of red and yellow (so don't add blue, it'll make brown, not purple).
@@erindoyle1452 wooow thanks soo much! I'm still new to color theory and I really appreciate your tip ❤️
Lol same with when I paint. I just pray to God that it turns out to that color HAHAHAHAHA
Hahaha..that's me 😂
Hi Jess, I really enjoy how you add letters to describe a bias for each color that affects the mixture. That's a great and a very visual way to help understand the "trick" why some mixtrures are surprisingly dull. I see some people doing swatches and declaring that some paints are bad quality, when really they mix colors that are impossible to give a vibrant green or purple. Thank you!
I'm glad it makes sense! This was the way that made most sense for me too and it's what has helped me to learn to mix colours.
What a great video! I would love more color theory videos because that’s the one thing I’m still not confident about while painting with gouache
this finally made me understand muting colours!! it’s all so clear now!!!!!
I have studied color theory before yet this video made all the sense in the world. I learned things that are obvious but never realized.
Here I am three months later with more understanding and a bit more experience. This tutorial really breaks down the basics of color mixing and handled my confusion about warm and cool biases. This is especially helpful as I just purchased Daniel Smith Essentials watercolors and Holbein's Primary Colors gouache set. I actually had less fun when I had more color choices! I feel a lot freer experimenting with a limited palette. Great video. :)
you’re videos are so amazing!! your art is beautiful and your voice and vibes are so soothing! this channel feels like a total safe space to just exist, it’s a void away from all the problems of life. i hope you can grow and reach more people to make more people’s days like finding you made mine 🥰
thank you that's incredibly kind! ❤️
I was just thinking about painting a colour wheel the other day! This is such a great lesson because it goes a little in depth! Thank you Jess! 💖 For painting, I don’t use any special paint/jelly paint/Himi, just Monte Mart gouache tubes because it’s easier to control and seal off the paint. I’d be too forgetful to keep spraying the open tubs for the Himi paint. 😆
I really like your idea of color theory, it's really helpful.
I'm just discovering your channel from Madrid/Spain and I love it a lot 😍 I will keep watching your videos and will give you a lot of likes😊 I learn to paint and English with you! Haha gooooood job and pretty good videos! Congrats!!
just want to say thank you for this video. It helped a lot and I found a lot of new lovely colour mixtures. Have a nice day
Thank you for your videos! You've inspired me to try gouache for myself and i fell in love with art and painting once again 🥰
Awww yay!! I love hearing this 🥰
I've really been enjoying your Gouache tutorials! :D Any chance you could do a video about layering? I struggle the most with adding layers on top of each other without activating the layer below.
I was working while watching this and the + aign brought me back to math class. This deserves a rewatch ti absorb it
This is so interesting to me, the warm blue looked so cool to me 😅 very good exercise ideas 💡 ❤
Never had an enlightened color mixing before. this is just so fun. Thank you

Love your easy explanation! My like was the 1k 🤩😜

THANK YOU i finally understand
Thank you so so much for making this video! I was really into gouache during the start of COVID, stopped, and now I am back in and wanted to learn about color theory first. This video is PERFECT! you are amazing.
this is so helpful omg,, thank you so much. i've never understood it until now!
This is really helpful thank you so much for sharing this knowledge with us! You explained it all perfectly ❤❤
Excellent info. I am so lost on color mixing.I need to go over this again.. Thank you very much.

Thanks Jess, this is just the video I needed! ❤️
My gouache came yesterday, this video is a gift,:)))
Your videos have inspired me to take up painting as a new hobby while going through this long lockdown in Sydney. Learning this was both interesting and helpful! This is way more informative, and I hope I can use it to arm myself better when painting.
This is so helpful💐. I love your tutorials
This is so so helpful and easy to understand, thank you! Would love to see more videos like this 🥰
Hey! I am really glad I found your channel, it's totally underrated and being a beginner at gouache, your videos are helping me a lot! Thank you so much ❤️
Thank you for this! - Didnt quite understand the first time around but got my first set of gouache tubes today so just going to start playing and see what happens. Then I'll revisit this color theory video again and see if it sticks this time. Thank you for this great content!
Thank you for this!
Your videos are so educational... I'm going to try my next painting with just primary colours and colour mix all other colours. Challenge accepted!
Amazing 🤩 Can you please do more of those real time videos? They are so relaxing
This is a great video and it teached me things I hadn't seen in other videos. Thank you!
Omg this is so great and so useful. I just started learning gouache and coincidentally found your video. Thank you for sharing this video for free. ♡

A very informative and easy to understand explanation :)
THIS VIDEO IS SO AMAZING. thank u so much!!!!!
This is just great, Jess! I did a color theory video a while back, but you created such an easy to follow and understand presentation. So well done! Really love how you walk through it, slowly and clearly. This is a great video as a refresher for seasoned artists and a fabulous starting point for amateurs and students. Cheers and hoping you are well and staying healthy! ~ Mark
This is so helpful!! Did not realise the undertones matter 😵
Have been really enjoying and appreciating these videos - I'm learning a lot!
Very good explanation. Thank you for sharing👍
I'm eagerly waiting your next video jess.... lockdown has been tough
oh god yes!! thank you so much, you really are saving my gouache love ❤️ i am a very Terrible color mixer
Thank you for discussion colour mixing. It is all new to me. Could you please consider doing another tutorial, on this subject and take it slower, a colour mixing for dummies!
Thank you so much for this wonderful video...
Extremely helpful. Thank you 🙂
Ooooooo I definitely need thisssss!! Big thanks!! Any Tips on using the Himi guache sets ?
Pick out the cools and warms of the primaries and just practice with those! You'll learn more rather than using the premixed colours
@@JessChungArt will do!!! Big thanks!! :)
@@JessChungArt so true first time triying it I am so overwhelmed by the collors i never mixed premix paint other tham mixing them with white or sometimes black
You are so informative and helpful! New sub!!!❤❤
it felt like studying chemistry while seeing those symbols... my head went🤯
Huhu same, i can't comprehend for a moment 😭
I have to rewatch the video lol

This was so helpful!!
Nice tutorials!👍👍💕
Thank you for sharing 😊!
Have a great day 😊 my dear friend 😄💕!
thank uu
Thank you so much 👏👏💖
I wanted to know how to mix vibrant colors because the only mixing technique I know is the muting one 😭 This tutorial is great for people who already know their cool and warm tones but it's also great if you wanna test yourself! XD
Ahhhh thank you thank you ❤️🥺
You're welcome 😊❤️
So informative ❤️❤️
Amazing video. Some noob/beginner questions: is it possible to create all, or most, of the colors with red, blue, yellow, white and black gouche? If so, is it a good idea?
lovely color ~~
Wow, this is the best colour theory class out there, bar none! Unfortunately, your subject matter is not something that I'm interested in and so I can't take any classes from you. I'm a city girl and I like to paint the city the buildings, the stores the streets. Plus I am looking for a very loose style of painting because I need to work fast when I'm outside. I am still very grateful for you to have put this information available
Early!!! Also, a question have u ever tried book binding?
Nope I have not! 😂
@@JessChungArt You need to try it! I just made my own watercolor sketchbook, and I loved the process. It's really relaxing!
Love
Thank you so much jess!!!i always used to wonder why my colours become muddy sometimes...
You're welcome!!! ❤️
Hey Jessica!
If I join the patreon now then will I be able to watch the tutorials for January month?! And is this a one time payment or I have to renew it every month?!
Yepp you will have access to all the tutorials on there (there's about 12 right now)! Patreon works as a monthly subscription where you get charged on the day you join, and then on the 1st of every month for as long as you stay. So joining earlier in the month is better 😄
Hey is that a ceramic pallete or a plastic one?... plz confirm ~thx
Can you do a video on how to clean brushes whole you are painting with Gouache to not mess up on what you are painting?
Can you please do more himi gouache tutorials pls ☺️
Warm_cool...hmmm...both your yellows are warm_ compare them to a lemon cad or a bismuth. What colour looks like what is dependent on the actual environment. We don't tend to see colours against a white backdrop often. ...and when is a white , white ? Almost never. And shades , I hope you don't add black to things. So warm and cool I choose not to worry about at all because as you say , it's about human psychology and emotional response. The split palette you have will be deficient in mixing various darks , greens and violets...see Bruce MacEvoy's " secondary palette " that gives you more mixing options using only 2 colours....Check out Don Jusko's Realcolor wheel for actual real life shades based on how light goes thru crystalline pigment particles to produce a real-life shade colour. Munsell system colouration adds black to colours for convenience but Nature doesn't do that. Cheers .
Hi Jess Chung , I really appreciate your colour theory , It helped me a lot. Thanks for the video. Your 12 yrs old fan from India ❤️❤️❤️.
Can you tell that can I make gouache painting with watercolour and titanium white or I have to buy the whole set of gouache. Pls let me know. Waiting for your kind reply!❤️❤️
Hello!! I haven't really tried it for myself but I believe you can do that to an extent. Have a go with white gouache and see how it goes - experimenting is the best way to learn 😄 Sending love from Aus!! 💕
@@JessChungArt Thanks for your warm reply. You told right "Experimenting is the best way to learn" . Looking forward for more videos of your own!
just in time, I'm trying to build a limited pallete for gouache. i don't like the colors built in sets at Holbein's.
You're making me question my colour theory because I've always viewed ultramarine blue as a cool blue and navy as warm
There are people who view them the opposite! I view ultramarine as the warm blue, but I've also seen some other artists view it as the cool blue. It's something I've never understood either 😂
Already you're talking about cool vs warm blues and I'm going cross-eyed. I don't understand. The ultramarine blue looked bluer than the lighter blue.
Can someone please tell me which himi gouache colors has jess used for cool and warm Reds?
I used rose for cool red and deep red for warm red
@@JessChungArt thanks for replying 😀
But i can't differentiate between warm and cool colours.
i cried when my himi maya red gouache didnt turn pink when i mixed it with white
I'm running out of white gouache and cannot buy it anywhere.. Now I'm just using acrylic white till I purchase the new gouache white paint.. Idk how it's turning out but I have no other option 😞
Sorry to hear that!! White is so important!!
@@butteredbananas1394 Yup.. I don't know what to do now i dont get the correct consistency at all
@@maryanaganai2291 I got the miya himi gouache set which comes with two whites so it won't have to worry about that, I hope you find a white soon or find a way to work around that 😢
@@butteredbananas1394 😖I hope so too
😊💕
How did I get every single blue yellow and red wrong? I literally thought that the warm red was a cool red😭😭
this is a great explanation but I don’t get It because I’m just learning about gouache
Wow! Thank you so much for this!
