  • I got a call to tow an EarthCrusier that was having engine troubles about 250 miles into the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately my rollback is STILL in the shop and they have nothing more than guesses as to what's wrong, so I called my buddy Matt with Tumalo Transport and he was kind enough to let me borrow my old @bwsmanufacturing trailer so I could go get it. The trip went really smooth and my new @SeriousTrucks Western Star ran as good as could be without even the slightest hiccup. The only almost issue was when I came over a hill and there were some cows in the road. With as much as I'm running in these open range areas, I'm thinking I need to get a @HERDnorthamerica bumper on this truck ASAP!

Back in the summer of 99 I rode my motorcycle from Portland out that way. The trip was taking longer than expected, and I got to the little gas station there in Burns Junction about 30 minutes after it closed. I thought I was going to have to ride back to Burns. But a kind hearted little old lady that owned the place came out in her nightgown and robe to unlock the pump for me. We need more people like her❤ and Casey in this world!

I was sure happy when we got the whole DEF system deleted on our 2014 Dodge. As soon as it passed 160,000 kms. (Warranty period ended.) it started using DEF like crazy. We got the system deleted and the cat all knocked out of it. We got a big boost in power and fuel mileage. The silly thing is, when the DEF cycle starts, it pours more raw diesel into the burner to make it work, so there goes your fuel mileage. The DEF was more expensive than the diesel, per litre.

They do sell DEF in bulk at most truck stop fuel stations to pick your DEF fill-up spots wisely. Most trucks can go 3-4 plus fill-ups without DEF. And for the record, DEF has a lot chemically in common with human urine so there is that.

It's fascinating seeing how other vehicles (and I assume this is the normal way) do jake brakes.
The only vehicles I've driven with exhaust brakes are farm tractors, and that's a button that you press with the heel of your left foot. So right foot on the main brake, left foot on the jake.
Makes it a lot harder to accidentally activate unless your passenger is messing with you.

Sounds like they have the Rollback figured out, now here's to hoping they have a workable solution for a long time fix for it and you can get things back to something close to normal for a while.

@@DerUnbbekante Precisely, most highway pumps here just have a DEF pump, much cleaner and easier.

I have a Ford 6.0 Powerstroke made day 3 of production. It has a Garret variable rate turbo on it. They are notorious for the moving parts in them seizing up from rust. Ford says the turbo is not serviceable and has to be replaced. Some Ford diesel mechanics say that is BS . . . you can wire wheel the rust out of it and then lubricate it with nickel anti-seize (the nickel stuff is the only one that will handle the high temperatures). I have done it to mine and it works.

The DEF fluid and the catalytic converter it flows into basically pops apart the nitrogen monoxide (NO), one oxygen atom and one nitrogen that got bonded together in the high temperatures-high pressures combustion chamber back into nitrogen and oxygen that air is mostly made of. Hopefully I payed attention enough in that class to get that close to being right. 🙂 I noticed years ago when driving on open range land, dirt roads mostly, that if there is cattle on the road that the cows will turn around and go the other way from witch they are pointing the the steers will go the way they are pointing. I am telling this to make you watch and add a little entertainment to your drives on and off road.

My 2001 suburban currently does the exact same thing. Missfire's, run both rich and lean sometimes, hates going uphill until you push the gas harder. But can also hear it flooding too. It takes forever to crank and start up. But once you drive for a little bit and start it up again it fires right up. 289k miles on her

I miss my 1993 3/4 ton dodge, that cummins was pretty bullet proof, and got great mileage as well.
Any time I hear the word “variable” I get real worried…..

We use DEF in our Diesel school buses, it can create problems if you let get below 1/2 tank.

Used to look forward to Steens Mtn pass... dangerous after dark because of the open range, cattle, deer, elk, etc.

Variable vane turbo actuator was a common problem on the Jeep Liberty CRD diesels made from 2005 to 2007.

Hurricane Hilary wasn’t a hurricane when it reached California either, it’s just a shorthand to describe whatever it had degraded into. (Ex-) Hurricane Hilary definitely had effects into Nevada, Oregon, and Idaho in term of the rainfall it caused. So now you know my guy

Love it - an engine made by Rudolph Diesel so that farmers coild make their own fuel from what they grow and not be subjected to wild swings in commodity prices...

We ran the DD16's in our logging trucks, I spent lots of time keeping them running. Yeah, the aftertreatment was an issue but not very often we had a truck down over it. Been 5 years since I retired, If I remember correctly the main issue was the heaters in the DEF lines, always loosing one of them and it would set a light. We had the eye in the sky so I could sit at my computer and see what the issue was and be ready for it when the truck got to the shop. Some of the sensors could be problematic too and on occasion had to take the DPF apart and clean them.
The biggest issue for us was the regen, don't shut it off and keep your idling to a minimum, and if it calls for you to do a parked regen, DO IT, don't wait.
I spent more time on the shit suspension system they ran. Neway ADZ, not good for logging.
As for the Fuso's with the gas engines. The coverall supplier that comes to my town tried to swap over to them. The plant is about 200 miles from my town. The company bought 2 of the Fuso's, in 2 months they got rid of them and put the old trucks back into service. Pure junk, about 2 miles to a gallon and always broken. First big hill coming out of the plant and they were on the side of the road.
Be interesting to see what other peoples experiences with the new fuso's are

Pretty cool putting the cow crossing in the video 2 times to lengthen the video. That’s ok I like it anyway.

Check for a collapsing muffler, the truck I was driving did the exact same thing, it would idle fine but when I started to use the engine hard it would blow black smoke like crazy. The truck was pre-def.
