Steal my breathing strategy for deadlifts

  • Deadlift is by far my favorite lift. But it’s also a love hate relationship.
    The reason for the hate is that it reveals my asymmetries. But that’s also the reason I love it.
    When I deadlift, my right leg tends to turn out and my weight shifts to the left leg.
    What does this have to do with my setup?
    Alright, so it turns out that the way humans produce force i by:
    1. Positioning the guts
    2. Squeezing the guts
    3. Filling the lungs with air
    All of these things ideally create pressure in the right places. Then we use that distribution to push through the ground.
    If your (my) left diaphragm doesn’t push down, the force of your right diaphragm pushing your guts down will be unopposed by the left. Fluid volume shifts left.
    This puts you over your left leg. The left leg is in a good spot to push into the ground through IR. The right leg is in a good position to continue pushing you over where the IR is at. Turning the spine away from the right towards the left helps.
    This could be the opposite as well.
    So to record this in my setup, I’m thinking:
    1. Exhale for as long as possible, feeling the abs, psoas and lumbar spine co-contract
    2. Inhale 3/4ths lung capacity, feeling a downward push of both the left and right diaphragm
    3. Hinge back while maintaining this tension
    4. Take slack out of the bar by pulling up and allowing the shoulders to wrap around the rib cage
    5. Dip the knees slightly towards the bar while pressing down with the feet and bringing the hips to the bar
    It’s all just about pressures, volumes, and force transfer.
