  • This video goes over a less common type of fixture compared to the spot light, but shows how valuable it is when used.

    Hi Adam,
You had helped me several months ago in extended the wire to my spot light.
What I want to do now is add a few more spot lights to an existing low voltage system
Can I splice in to an existing wire to add a spot light using connectors?
    Thanks for your help
    Roger

Sorry for the late response. Yes you can add lights to an existing system and connect them to the existing wire. You can add the lights anywhere along the existing wire. FYI: Don't add more wattage to the existing wire than it can handle, and don't add more wattage to than the transformer can handle. So if your wire is a 12/2 wire, it can handle around 120 watts (give or take). If you have 20 lights that have 7 Watt LED bulbs, that's 140 watts. If you want to add more lights to the system, run a new wire. Hope that helps!

We have 3 tall palm trees in the front of our house spaces out about 3 feet from each other. Do you think a flood light would do the trick or do you recommend 3 spot lights? Thank you!

I would suggest doing 3 spot lights. It's amazing how shifting from a flood light design allows there to be more dark to light contrast. This in turn makes the lighting look even better!

I was wondering about using flood lights vs. Spot lights in front of my house. Thanks for this video.
I have a large gable in the center of my home that I was thinking a flood light would be good for. I would have to
mount the flood light on a gutter about 10ft away from the gable. The light would then have to reach the 10ft to get from gutter to gable, then illuminate maybe another 8 or so ft to reach upwards for effect.
Wouldnt a spot light create a "hot spot" in this situation (since it's not being placed directly under the feature it's illuminating)? I always thought a flood created less of a cone of light like a spot light and more of a natural looking light where the beam edges fade as it ends rather than creating a hard stop between beam end and darkness.
I have two other smaller gables on the far left and right of my home and I know spot lights will be fine, just wondering about the very large center gable.
Also: bulb wattage means how far a beam of light will travel? And bulb lumens is how bright a bulb is? Seems like no matter if I use a spot or flood for the center, I'll need a high wattage?

Another great question. Depending on how wide the gable is, I would say wider you should use flood light over the spot. The spot light only gives a hot spot look when it's close to the gable. If you put the light about 5ft away and shine more upwards instead of right at it, you shouldn't see a hot spot.
As for the wats. From what I understand, watts just mean the amount of electricity it takes to power the light. Lumens is how bright the bulb is. As for gable light watts. I would say to keep it around a 4-5 watt. A brighter bulb would probably cause it to look too bright compared to the rest of house. Ultimately its up to your preference.
