Good morning, I wanted to jump in here to say a few things regarding the Technics GX70, which some of you have asked about. We no longer have the GX70 in our possession and are not able to compare it directly to the Rotel. All that said, the Technics is a very good and capable all-inclusive amp and one I would consider alongside the Rotel IF (and this is important) I didn't need the Rotel's extra power for difficult to drive speakers or larger rooms. Additionally, if you don't like the idea of converting your analog signals to digital, this includes your turntable; I would advise against the Technics as it converts ALL incoming signals to the same digital format. That said, the Technics is a better value (excluding power output) directly compared to the Rotel. I hope this helps clear up any questions and/or confusion surrounding why the Technics was not mentioned here.
I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again: Rotel could be an absolute market killer if all they did was listen and pay attention. Being in that whole limbo of trying to stick to old school techniques is just not gonna work anymore. Make the RA-1592 Mk3 with HDMI, this same screen and streaming options. Make the price $3500 and you’ve got an absolute killer of a super integrated unit right there. Do the same with the smaller amps and you’ve got a truly competitive lineup. This is a first step in the right direction, but still I would need more in order to justify a purchase of this. Still, I hope they learn from this and move ahead with time more. Great review, conversation and the room is coming along beautifully. Couldn’t wait any longer to see the final result! Hope y’all are having an awesome day!
Love the glasses. For me the highlight of this review is your "complaints" section. It's true everywhere and getting worse. I enjoy your honesty and positivity. Best to you both.
Great review! I bought the RA-1592mk2 in part from your review at the time. Good to see that I still have a great choice for the money with my Bluesound Node. Please when you get a chance test the Rotel Michi X5 Series 2! The Michis have moved on to the Series 2 since the X3 test, and it might be worth checking out what the top of the line Rotel integrated sounds like. It probably should be a significant upgrade from what was heard so far on this channel from Rotel, maybe!

Just to prove that the pluses and minuses of any product are not the same for everybody, ras 5000 just got the EISA award for the best streaming amplifier, alongside Hegel 400. That's a nice recognition considering how EISA is working. By the way Andrew, when can we expect a review of a Hegel amplifier?
Good morning Andrew and Kristi. Great review. As a Rotel owner I think they’re a brand that has consistently produced good sounding products. I do agree that in this segment of the market that the 5000 is aimed at, omitting things like a built-in phonostage is a serious detriment to its broader market appeal. Majority of people that would be shopping in this segment want the all-in-one solution, not looking to add additional boxes. Keep up the great work.
As much as I like the idea of having everything in one device, I fear the aging process. In particular, devices with a display no longer look up to date after 5 years or so and no longer receive updates. I prefer to buy a good classic stereo amplifier and then go with a separate streamer and dac, which I usually hide on the shelf somewhere. I can replace it when the time comes. This means that I never have the pressure of always wanting to have the new and best thing for a lot of money and I become dissatisfied when a new model of my device is released.
In the year 2024 all integrated need to have 2.1 or 2.2 bass management simply because a subwoofer improves the sound by several magnitudes and I don't like running my mains full range when a sub is attached. It improves the mains response quite a bit when a HPF is applied. And while I am complaining for $3000, I would expect to have Dirac Live 😛
Definitely agree. It is a lot easier (with less degradation of sound quality) to cut off low frequency output to the main speakers at 100 Hz or so at line level, then it is at speaker level. So I don't understand why manufacturers don't offer this in all pre-amps or integrated amps.
Good afternoon! I respect conversation regarding the lack of features vs a quality product that is great on its own. My primary setup didn't have room correction, but the quality and sound is amazing. And I was able to add that later. All good! Also, glad you've found some good content to watch 😊
The ending was epic! So much truth in those 9 min. That's why I watch Robinson, it's because it's honest and mindful of the art behind the work done by these engineers. I tried to get into the audiophile community once but seeing the snobbery and self righteousness hovering above these mid tier audiophile youtubers is kinda ridiculous, they are all just guessing or just echo chambering. I once had one of these guys in my studio (Music producer since 1996) while we created a full album, from start to finish, for about 3 months and he couldn't believe the long hours and hard work behind it, even said: I got more respect now for how these records are created, then I said, exactly the same amount of work goes behind all these compressors, Eqs and pre-amps bother., be mindful of that! I still see him rambling online about how poor the new whatever this is and that is but still, I know, that day he understood that there are people behind the products, these have feelings and take their jobs very seriously. Jumping on the hate wagon doesn't help anyone especially in this economy, if you don't like something, don't buy it, that simple. Vote with your wallet, the online echo chambering is just insignificant, why even bother? _Great_ review, as always, guys. Streaming tech changes so rapidly I don't really _want_ that particular feature in an amp though...just want the highest quality amp possible with actual tactile KNOBS to turn...lol. Menu diving for small EQ adjustments are a deal-breaker for me with anything. 👍
I think what Rotel lacks and not just Rotel is that old school "Loudness!" Button. That button did wonders in average listening levels. It improved the bass, Midrange and Treble at lower volumes such as 60/70 db.
I’ve read specs on countless receivers, and integrated amps. I’ve never once seen any boost in the midrange. It’s usually either bass and treble, or just bass. Sure that may help the mid, but it’s not actually boosting it at all. And while yes they were often at different frequencies than the treble and bass controls provided. They were usually close, and not boosted a lot. So what I’m saying is that by boosting the bass, and/or treble. Which this amp has. Then you’re getting almost the exact same effect. Loudness is just a simple Fletcher Munson compensation. Which can also be accomplished in other ways. That being said. It would be nice to see it return. And I would also like to see midrange controls too, like on many old Marantz receivers. But in the meantime. Just crank up the bass, and/or treble at low volume. And enjoy the music. 😉 😁✌️
I think the Rotel RAS 5000 will appeal to a majority of people in the hobby because of it's number of features ie, not too many, and I love the glasses, they really suit you!! 😊
Even going back to the late seventies Rotel have always been a quality manufacturer in my opinion. Although I’m more drawn to their simplistic designs (A11 styling and functionality) I appreciate the market has changed and customers are expecting more options to align with their chosen path. I personally would go with a straight forward amp and a separate streamer with the bells and whistles and should we see additional streaming technology appear then that can be changed at a later date once the tech has become proven stability (hopefully)!. Keep up the great work👍👍
With any comment i make, i always try and be positive. If theres a product im not interested in, its still worth a view. Theres no need for me to freak out that someone dared to make gear im indifferent towards. And personally, i cant get mad streaming is the norm vs physical media. Thats the way things went. No use being salty about it. Cheers!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews theres way too much needles complaining, negativity, one-upping, and holier than thou stuff going on these days. Who wants to be the downer at the party?
Great review again. I love Rotel . I’m so happy you guys introduced me to it. I prefer my 1592 MkIII . I want to look into different streamers and DACs . Thank you guys again for such an in-depth opinion and view as you guys are always entertaining
Nobody does a better more thorough review than you do. And yea, it’s impossible to keep up with technology and the $$$$$. You handle it well. As a personal side note…I focus more on being “satisfied “ with my sound…and that is an enormous philosophical adjustment.
I'm so intrigued by this. The guy who cleans my vinyls and I buy tubes off has some older Rotel gear which he has had recapped and I love that classic Rotel sound... But balanced against some limitations in user experience... Hmmmm
Well needed commentary at the end of the broadcast (the meanness that exist in our hobby today). The entire subectivist vs objectivist arguement (you can be both). The destroying of brands as you've mentioned...the world is a meaner place, and i pray for my grands because they're kind, don't want them to take on the rudeness that exist as the new norm. 😢
I appreciate you watching through to the end, and I agree, there is a wind of cynicism and anger that has started to flow through this (and many other) hobbies and I'm not entirely sure why or what was the root cause.
Man Rotel used to be the hidden gem in the audio world 10 years ago I used to be able to pick up their aunts for dirt cheap I wish I never mentioned it to anyone 😂 I had the RB 1080 and 972 receiver which was rated at 80 watts a Channel all channels driven like all the aps and receivers are rated wish i never had to get rid of them 😞
That discussion about audiophile haters... I'm really glad I'm out of that realm. I basically only go to ABX audiophile Discord when i want to participate in audiophile community. No hate there. Just a chill community.... and it's free!
I like the review, and m tempted. But I wonder if you could get a more future proof solution getting a streaming preamp like a DMP-A8 and combine that with a Rotel 2 channel power amp?
Always loved Rotel gear. One of my favorite and best sounding amps I ever owned was a small Rotel from the late 80s. This sounds like it would be great in a small all digital system. Another well done review! 👍
@@MaZEEZaM It's called USB Type B, there is nothing "old school" about it! The differing form of USB-A and USB-B helps to enforce the mono-directional aspect of these iterations of USB. Most of the network streamers shipped with USB connectors that has both Type A and Type B. I am using Rotel 1592mkII with an EverSolo DMP6 Master Edition.
I know it is not a perfect comparison but how does this ( sonically ) compare to the Naim unity Nova? 140w A/B on the Rotel vs 80w A/B on the Naim. Also $3,000 vs $6,000 but i'm in the market and any input from you is appreciated. 😊
You need 3 analog aux inputs in addition to the 5 digital inputs (Coax, optical, USB, Ethernet, and HDMI)? Obviously, it does come with one analog aux input.
If it's similar to the 1592 that's a big win. I wish rotel would come out with a more stylish box, and i agree that the features are kinda lacking, but I don't see that as a huge negative. The texas instruments graphing calculator looks are in need of an update, but keep that rotel sound.
Oh I actually love the built in phono preamp on the 40N. It’s better than both my external ones. I would have to pay a lot more money to get one better than the internal one!
Rotel has always been very basic at setup focusing on quality ingredients more than decorating the cake is a good way to look at it ...bass is amazing on rotel all channels driven ... Honestly I wish it was a law that manufacturers had to do it that way 😂
Dear Christy and Andrew Sound and experiencing sound depends from person to person. And one likes that brand and another likes another , it is for yourself da you have to choose and listen and a lot also depends on the sppeakers , right
Unfortunately, I miss the phono input, no matter how good the amplifier is, it's hard for me to think that I would give up enjoying my record collection because of it. By the way, I give 👍 for glasses
You can buy a dedicated external phono pre-amp. For example, the Schiit Mani phono pre-amp is only $149, and they usually make fairly well-regarded equipment. I simply don't understand why the phono pre-amp has to be internal to the amp? The Rotel RAS-5000 is a $3,000 product, so what is another $150?
@@sokrebis It’s $3,000. A lot of people with high-end turntables want to choose their own phono pre-amp. Also I think you are missing the point of this particular amp. It’s primarily for digital streaming not for vinyl users.
@@Mark-rw3kw why not ditch the internal DAC? A lot of people would use some other external DAC. I'm thinking about this amp as high quality all in one device. All in one for me would also include phono stage. It is not unreasonable to get it for its price.
@@sokrebis It’s not about the price. Admit it, if the price was $2,850 and you had to buy a phono preamp for $150, you would still complain. I sold all my vinyl about 22 years ago, so I don’t really care.
I'm a fan of Rotel. I use the Onkyo TX-RZ50, along with a Rotel 120 watt per channel amp. It's a nice 2-ch combo along with help from SVS, and my Canton Towers. With that said I wouldn't buy this simply because Rotel needs to pay a stupid tax. The lack of inputs is just plain silly. Close, but it's a miss.
I'll do the Yamaha with a separate streamer. I can't say "no" to those sweeping needles and built in pre-amp for the turntable that i am looking to purchase.😅
So, from an integrated amplifier standpoint (dac + amp+ pre), you are saying that this amp is like a 140w 1592mk2, if not, even a slighty better 140w version of that integrated ?
He got some new ones! He's been wearing the same pair (with same lenses) for a long, long time! I think these look really nice on him. You have good taste!
Not a fan of a “forward” sounding Amp. Bought an Audiolab 7000A and ended up selling it. I already had a Parasound 200Pre and the little known (or at least Reviewed) Model 2350 ZoneMaster Power Amp, but wanted more Outputs. So it was to be used as a Pre Amp, or potentially a total replacement. The Parasound has a less forward sound, but still with large reserves of power and a real depth and encompassing sound stage, almost sounding British, and with much better Bass control. All in ones like the Rotel have interested me, but I think with Technology moving at the rate it does, I’d rather keep updating a Streamer than the whole thing.
Had to return mine, software was buggy. Build quality was good, however it kept freezing, and changing between sources was not fun. Kept having to power off and on the change sources.
3k for this much clean power and a streamer is a bargain from my perspective. I'm not in the market for such a thing, but the simplicity would be another bonus for putting it on the short list if I was.
Try telling the commentary starting at 20:37 to a company like Audio Note. They will laugh in your face. Audio Note doesn’t give a hoot about modern tech in their sound. That’s why they are so cherished in this age of modern digital hifi. They are far from “extinct”.
He’s obviously not talking about companies like that at all. He’s talking about companies that are wading into modern waters. He’s saying that if you do it. You had better get it right. Nobody with as much experience in this hobby as Andrew is naive enough to think that Audio Note, or any other cherished name in HiFi has to go modern, or die. As he said though. Companies that only wade out a couple of feet. Leave themselves open to criticism, and accusations of it just being a cash grab. Instead on a sincere effort on their part. ✌️
@@amb3cog Andrew’s statement seems like a blanket statement for the industry. So he seems unaware of highly successful companies like audio note. AN doesn’t even have a remote control option on 99% of their preamps and integrateds.
I'm really on the fence between the Rotel RAS 5000 and the Yamaha R-N2000A. Would you say the R-N2000A edges out the sound quality a little better than the RAS 5000? Is the dac perhaps a little smoother sounding on the Yamaha? Just looking at the rear panel, there are more inputs and a second pair of speaker terminals on the R-N2000A. It appears the Yamaha is better built and heavier. I'm seeing the pricing go as low as $3,120.00 on sale. Seems like I'll be getting more bang for the buck with the Yamaha.
Just got the Yamaha rn1000a and the Rotel S14. In many reviews I saw that the Yamaha rn1000a was abetter choice as it has HDMI, room correction and 100 watts @8 ohms. I hooked up the S14 to my Kef R7s and played it at 90db in my room it sounded really good. The soundstage was wide, mid bass and lower bass was nicely separated and had really nice control of the bass. I hooked up the RN1000a and the soundstage, instrument separation and bass was not good compared to the Rotel. I'm returning the Yamaha as its room correction did nothing in my room and keeping the Rotel as it sounds better to me in my room. Get the Rotel and try it in your room.
I have been following the channel for year and I’m thinking I may have gotten old along the way, I kinda miss the slatted wood which centered my attention to the tv.
I don't know for sure, but I have my doubts about whether most TV's (or any TV's) can stream high-res audio, such as recordings which have been mastered from better than CD quality (20-bit/48kHz or higher). I am talking about streaming from Tidal Masters, Amazon Music HD, Qobuz Studio Premier, etc. These are extra cost tiers over the regular streaming services offered by these companies.
I have some concern with only one analog input which would cause me to look at some of Rotel's competition that you mentioned here. While streaming/digital only might be fine, I suspect most of Rotel's customers prefer the freedom to keep a foot in each world...analog and streaming. Although I suppose you could get by with an RCA switch if you need more analog inputs...
Good morning, i would be really interested to hear a few words about the pairing with the KEF R11, as one of your top 5 speakers. Actually i was expecting you would have done the pairing with the RA 1592 MKII as it was your refference amp 🙂 and i would have loved to hear your oppinion about it.
Maybe I missed this in an earlier posting but did you two modify your listening room? I noticed a difference in furniture and in the front wall, specifically the wood slate vertical diffusion panels. New room? Using back wall of existing room? Just being curious, that’s all. 😊
You got rid of the slat panels - as mentioned in an earlier video you would - I think they looked great. I understand your room keeps evolving to the latest (minimalist} modern decoration and looks awesome, the removal of the slats must have affected the acoustics of the room. Cheers.
I purchased the RAS-5000 and play music via Bluetooth from my iPhone from Apple Music. I cannot get any album art to show on the Rotel display. Do I have to “Airplay” the music to show the colored artwork? I’m baffled.
Rotel RAS-5000, Technics GU700MK2 or Yamaha R-N2000A? I'm really struggling, having Turntable and Wiim pro plus in-place already which also utilizes DAC for small CD Transport via Optical, but it would be great to get rid of part of the components..
If I wanted streaming *and* have the Rotel sound, I'd feel much more comfortable with a Rotel amp and a separate, dedicated streamer. Too much of a roll of the dice to rely on Rotel for anything dealing with software. They're just not there yet.

Keep up the great work👍👍
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Have a great day!
Lifetime Rotel fan. Appreciate the review. Ever consider GoldenEar speakers or PS Audio electronics?
With any comment i make, i always try and be positive. If theres a product im not interested in, its still worth a view. Theres no need for me to freak out that someone dared to make gear im indifferent towards. And personally, i cant get mad streaming is the norm vs physical media. Thats the way things went. No use being salty about it. Cheers!
Great attitude to have! Appreciate you sharing!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your comment.
I'm so intrigued by this. The guy who cleans my vinyls and I buy tubes off has some older Rotel gear which he has had recapped and I love that classic Rotel sound... But balanced against some limitations in user experience... Hmmmm
Hi Kristy and Andrew, the new glasses look great
Well needed commentary at the end of the broadcast (the meanness that exist in our hobby today).
Gorgeous new front wall. Can’t wait for the in-wall reviews. Great review as always A & K.
Love, Love, Love your reviews, and this is another very good one!
Thanks so much!
Acoustic treatments for the front wall? Looking forward to the video on the wall build. Great review as always!
Stay tuned!
Man Rotel used to be the hidden gem in the audio world 10 years ago I used to be able to pick up their aunts for dirt cheap I wish I never mentioned it to anyone 😂 I had the RB 1080 and 972 receiver which was rated at 80 watts a Channel all channels driven like all the aps and receivers are rated wish i never had to get rid of them 😞
I've been waiting for this review - thanx!👍🏽
That discussion about audiophile haters... I'm really glad I'm out of that realm. I basically only go to ABX audiophile Discord when i want to participate in audiophile community. No hate there. Just a chill community.... and it's free!
Why no testing with Maggies, Eminent Tech and Diptique full range flat panels these are great for people who want to think and listen outside the Box
I like the review, and m tempted. But I wonder if you could get a more future proof solution getting a streaming preamp like a DMP-A8 and combine that with a Rotel 2 channel power amp?
Since I know you guys were both fans of the Sonus Faber Lumina 2, any plans to review the newly released Lumina 2 Amator variant? Thanks!
Always loved Rotel gear. One of my favorite and best sounding amps I ever owned was a small Rotel from the late 80s. This sounds like it would be great in a small all digital system. Another well done review! 👍
Its $4,000 AUD its a lot for for an amp that lacks bass control and the non standard USB connection for pc, its the old-school printer style USB.
Your discussion at 17:48 was very helpful
I know it is not a perfect comparison but how does this ( sonically ) compare to the Naim unity Nova? 140w A/B on the Rotel vs 80w A/B on the Naim. Also $3,000 vs $6,000 but i'm in the market and any input from you is appreciated. 😊
Sadly the lack of Aux ports is kinda a killer for this imo if it had about 3 of them I think this would be a great product at the price.
This one puts a smile on my face. Rotel, well done.
What happened to the living room walls?
Lovely piece of gear!
It sure is!
Looks like the Rotel is a contender. Love the screen. I was just going to ask about the 40N and you must have read my mind…😂
Kristi made doubly sure we didn't leave it out of the comparisons this time.
@@andrewrobinsonreviewsThanks Kristi!
🙌@@LeezahB
Oh I actually love the built in phono preamp on the 40N. It’s better than both my external ones. I would have to pay a lot more money to get one better than the internal one!
BTW Good Voice Mixing. It sounds like Radio. Well done!
Andrew takes a lot of pride in his work. Thank you for noticing! I know he'll appreciate your comments, Olaf!
Thanks! 😃
GM once again!!!! Hey ... Rotel!!!
Morning!
Again a great review which makes me want to check out this product. Thanks to you both.
Wonderful review! If I could fit this into my setup I would definitely get this. Limited by vertical height for my amp. Love this streaming amp.
Rotel has always been very basic at setup focusing on quality ingredients more than decorating the cake is a good way to look at it ...bass is amazing on rotel all channels driven ... Honestly I wish it was a law that manufacturers had to do it that way 😂
Yamaha's. Look like they sound Beautiful.
Dear Christy and Andrew Sound and experiencing sound depends from person to person. And one likes that brand and another likes another , it is for yourself da you have to choose and listen and a lot also depends on the sppeakers , right
I have been installing alot of those TCL 98" tv's and its pretty awesome for the price.
Totally agree!
@@Mark-rw3kw If I pay 5000$ for the amp I want it included, not to have another box on the shelf.
You're glasses are top , now the beauty comes out 🙂
I'm a fan of Rotel.
I feel bass management should be mandatory these days. Very few integrated's have this and asking for a sub out and crossover isn't asking much.
I'll do the Yamaha with a separate streamer. I can't say "no" to those sweeping needles and built in pre-amp for the turntable that i am looking to purchase.😅
I recently took delivery of Denon DRA900H 😊. keenly waiting for your guys review, that’s if not already done.
So, from an integrated amplifier standpoint (dac + amp+ pre), you are saying that this amp is like a 140w 1592mk2, if not, even a slighty better 140w version of that integrated ?
Hello from Hong Kong ~~~
Morning!
Thank you for another great review and commentary!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good morning Andrew? Look at that you have glasses like mine.
He got some new ones! He's been wearing the same pair (with same lenses) for a long, long time! I think these look really nice on him. You have good taste!
@@KristiWright actually that was my wife's choice. But thank you.
hahah. I too, helped in the final picks...@@blakkboxx4246
I have to watch later getting ready for a soccer tournament you guys kick grass laters
See you later! Have a great game.
Andrew, awesome video! How does this Rotel square up against last year's Technics SU GX70?
Please see my pinned comment.
Had to return mine, software was buggy. Build quality was good, however it kept freezing, and changing between sources was not fun. Kept having to power off and on the change sources.
Love analogue meters they look class
Another great video thanks, could you guys please tell me if the display on the unit can be turned off while streaming music or watching TV?
Too expensive for stereo in my mind 😢 but it looks nice
3k for this much clean power and a streamer is a bargain from my perspective. I'm not in the market for such a thing, but the simplicity would be another bonus for putting it on the short list if I was.
Pairing this with the B&W 805 d4's. Good idea or would you pick something else in this price range as an integrated?
what is the benefit of having the amplifier doing the subwoofer crossover setting vs just setting it on the subwoofer?
Thanks for another fantastic review! Like others I'm also interested in why no comparison to the SUGX70. Is it the power difference?
Please see my pinned comment.
❤❤❤ new video
Thanks for watching!
I just use my smart TV as a music streamer. I can download all my music apps on there. Don't need a streaming amp or receiver.
Yes. I have this same dilemma when seeing these new streamers, but if you buy an external DAC for your TV, it's like a whole new rig.😂
How does it compare against the Technics GX70?
Please see my pinned comment.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews thank you!
Maybe I missed this in an earlier posting but did you two modify your listening room? I noticed a difference in furniture and in the front wall, specifically the wood slate vertical diffusion panels. New room? Using back wall of existing room? Just being curious, that’s all. 😊
We're working on a video detailing the changes, stay tuned...
I noticed the same thing and was just about to post.
I think it looks much better IMHO.
You got rid of the slat panels - as mentioned in an earlier video you would - I think they looked great. I understand your room keeps evolving to the latest (minimalist} modern decoration and looks awesome, the removal of the slats must have affected the acoustics of the room. Cheers.
Your are correct, removing the slats did have an effect on the acoustics. What's in its place made it better! Thanks for noticing.

I purchased the RAS-5000 and play music via Bluetooth from my iPhone from Apple Music. I cannot get any album art to show on the Rotel display. Do I have to “Airplay” the music to show the colored artwork? I’m baffled.
Nice product!
Which could be a budget option with HDMI ARC (about 1000€)?
This is covered in the video!
Yes, I saw the alternatives in the video, but they all seem more expensive. The rotel S14 seems a good solution
Fair enough. Thank you for watching!
