The defeat of the British brings about mixed feelings. On one hand, it was a victory for the Asian people whereby an East Asian power defeated a Western Colonial power, thereby smashing the myth of Western superiority which was so ingrained at that time. On the other, the atrocities they committed alienated the very same Asian people from embracing the Japanese as their liberators. If only they had better PR.

Compare that to where the British and Germans plundered, and you will see few if any Natives. They scapegoat disease but the Spanish explored everywhere from Florida and South Carolina to Montana (hence the name from Spanish montaña) and the southern shores of Alaska, spreading disease just as in Meso and South America, yet disease did not do away with most in the latter, so it was because of imperial differences in conduct towards the Natives, that demographics are as they are. Why did Percival surrender?! It makes no sense. Whether they fought or surrendered they would receive the same treatment from the Japanese. How could he sit there with no rifles or bayonets pointed at him, no immediate physical danger, and so easily surrender. It means he sent his soldiers to die as POW's and be humilitated for nothing. Percival humiliated Anglo-Saxons.
But us in New Zealand, next time we won't be following the big powers into a war, if we're smart. If Japan and America want to invade China we will hopefully have the common sense to remain neutral. We have no reason to help the Japanese against China, not after how Japan treated our soldiers.

The British were not only tied up in Europe and Africa, but they badly underestimated the Japanese. A lot of them had trouble understanding that these short, skinny nerdy looking guys could possibly defeat them in battle.

Britain lost all the major battles in WWII - fall of Singapore is just a logical event in that chain. Britain could fight only with African tribes.

Yep they outnumbered the Japanese and some speculation was that they had more ammo then the Japanese. It all boils down to leadership and perceptions.

An excellent question. The British forgot their reading of Sn Tzu's classic ON WAR written in the 5th Century, BC. Sun Tzu stated, "NEVER underestimate your opponent." The British did this and in addition, General Yamashita was a far superior commander and tactician.

1:02 This is battle flag. Do you know why not be repaired?

I know western militaries it's considered an honor to have damage to one's battle flag, and it's rarely fully repaired until after a campaign/battle. I would guess this unit is doing something similar and had their flag damaged in battle and is parading with it to show off, essentially. They will probably have it repaired or place it in their home base on display after this parade.

Maybe the video is a regiment of the Fifth Division organized in the late 1880s. The reason is that the 5th Division was in the center of the 32nd Army and many photographers were also brought together. This regimental flag did not mean that the fabric deteriorated over a long period of time, insects ate and decayed, and only the surrounding bunch remained, and it was hit by bullets or cut by enemy soldiers. The regimental flag is an honor given by His Majesty the Emperor at the time of organization, and it does not replace or repair it just because it is damaged, so it became a military flag with only such a cell as a historical regiment.

Indian troops chained themselves to their machine guns when they faced the Japanese landing forces at Kota Bahru. Chinese volunteers of Dalforce fought using shotguns and swords at the landing sites at Kranji. Were these not brave enough ?
