My father, Doug Warren, was captured in Singapore and spent the rest of the War on the Railway. A very different man came home apparently. His before and after photos are startling. He went out a rather plump youth and returned a haggard man.
Thanks to him and his comrades for their service.
I recently read The Naked Island by Russell Braddon. All about the POWs that were captured in SG and sent to work on the railways. It's a powerful and tragic insight into what they had to endure.

Without the Pacific war, most South East Asian countries would not have been able to get independence, understand that point; Japan is the only ASIAN country so far has fought against the Russians 1904/05 & then the British 1941/45 and the Dutch as well as the Americans.
WIthout the Pacific war, Japan wouldn't have gotten NUKED! DOn't be a fool, South East Asian countries got independence because British didn't want the empire anymore, seeing how they nearly lost Britain to Hitler with their forces scattered all over the globe to protect the empire.
The russians hammered Japanese forces in 1938 and then 1945 , also allies hammered japan ?

Singapore, Malaya, Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), Burma etc., this is why VP Day is only half the story and VJ Day is all encompassing and correct.
Images as these had a profound effect on public opinion throughout Asia. They shattered the myth of the invincible white man and encouraged nationalist movements later on.
The defeat of the British brings about mixed feelings. On one hand, it was a victory for the Asian people whereby an East Asian power defeated a Western Colonial power, thereby smashing the myth of Western superiority which was so ingrained at that time. On the other, the atrocities they committed alienated the very same Asian people from embracing the Japanese as their liberators. If only they had better PR.

@@rexguy7823 yeah sure genius. You don't need to be a scholar on colonialism to recognize it as the ultimate oppression of human beings, and the British were masters of it. How many Indians were executed by the British during their campaign for freedom?
@@larrysamhat5862 I'm glad I'm Spanish since the empire of my people was not genocidal as proven by demographics in that most speakers of Spanish are one hundred percent Native American as in Honduras where I was born. Compare that to where the British and Germans plundered, and you will see few if any Natives. They scapegoat disease but the Spanish explored everywhere from Florida and South Carolina to Montana (hence the name from Spanish montaña) and the southern shores of Alaska, spreading disease just as in Meso and South America, yet disease did not do away with most in the latter, so it was because of imperial differences in conduct towards the Natives, that demographics are as they are. I was lied to that the Spanish wiped out all Caribbean Natives, when I met taínos in Miami.
Fujiwara Kikan.
Yes, the Japanese psychological warfare unit F Kikan played a vital role in this battle. Whole battalions of Indian troops switched sides.
unprecedented blow to Britain's sense of racial superiority.
Why the british and it allies lost is they are not fighting for their land. Also lack of military intelligence and bad leader. I cannot deny the japanese out-smart them and with strong support from air power but their supplies line is their weak point.

Gen. Percival surrendered to Gen Yamashita in Singapore in 1942. But in 1945, Gen Yamashita surrendered to the Allies in Philippines, and Percival was there to accept their surrender.
yes, but Percival did nothing for allies .. rubbish

Percival was a good staff officer but a. Useless Commander. His name will be pissed on in History. If he had any honour, he should have committed ritual suicide. Hara kiri ...... Pui.
Percival was poor, he had 3:1 advantage and couldnt defend Malaya. The chain of command was in disarray whereas Japanese is center around Yamashita.
@@Joeyknows924British cowards ran away, the Japanese warriors thought NOTHING of them, to the magnificent Japanese conquers the British are sheep’s
What everyone is afraid to admit is that Japan only surrendered not only because of the a bomb but because Russia was attacking from the East down thru Manchuria and Japan knew they were as bad if not worse than the Japanese in terms of atrocities. Not even the East (us, Brits, french, etc) would he'll them in from what they would've done to Japan.
I cant imagine, how they had time to do cremation ritual for they fellow troops during operation?
Seems the japanese troops bring their fellow dead soldier ash in white bag on their chest??
Anyone can explain??
For the Japanese army, the Malaya Front was on the attacking side, so they were able to attack while changing units. So I had time to cremate my comrades who died in the war.
The Japanese cremate and put some small pieces of the remaining bones in a ceramic pot and put them in the grave. What the soldier in the video is hanging on his chest is this urn wrapped in a white wooden box and wrapped in white cotton cloth, and it will be sent to Japan after this parade and delivered to the bereaved family. It's not like comrades fight while carrying it.
This video is a scene where comrades who died in front of victory are participating in the victory parade.
Those surrendered are the British colonial armies in Malaya. Serve them right......

That statue of Sir Stamford Raffles at 2:50 survived the war.
The Japanese occupiers ordered it to be demolished, but Marquis Tokugawa, Director of Syonan Museum (or Raffles Museum before the Fall of Singapore and National Museum today) and a direct descendant of the most successful warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu, hid it under his protection until the return of the British and Commonwealth forces.

Amerika Syarikat masa tu takda niat nak berperang pun diorang neutral. Tapi bila Jepun serang pangkalan tentera laut pasifik Amerika baru Amerika sertai perang dunia kedua
Why did Percival surrender?! It makes no sense. Whether they fought or surrendered they would receive the same treatment from the Japanese. How could he sit there with no rifles or bayonets pointed at him, no immediate physical danger, and so easily surrender. It means he sent his soldiers to die as POW's and be humilitated for nothing. Percival humiliated Anglo-Saxons.
But us in New Zealand, next time we won't be following the big powers into a war, if we're smart. If Japan and America want to invade China we will hopefully have the common sense to remain neutral. We have no reason to help the Japanese against China, not after how Japan treated our soldiers.
No bullets no kill my friend. They don't have the air superiority, reinforcement and the majority of peninsular were against them until they witnessed the brutality of the Japanese imperial army. Btw if New Zealand remains neutral, in the nearest future, it could be neutralize
@@rhyzhenthioz Thank you for your message. In any case it was important to fight to show the world our bravery but Percival chose not to. Malayans fought very bravely. New Zealand does not need to choose between China or America, nor does the rest of the world. I hope we can work for a peaceful Asia-Pacific region in future.
I think because Japanese controlled air and sea, from the airbase in thailand they bombed Singapore until they took over SG Tengah airbase. Japs can easily reinforce if Percival try to fight back, Singapore's water lines are being bombed too. Even if Percival outnumber Jap by 3:1, his troops get bombed non-stop by artillery, airforce without supplies.
lack of water was main issue
so many allied prisoners of war, I wish someone could explain wonders how Singapore fell and fell so rapidly !
The British were not only tied up in Europe and Africa, but they badly underestimated the Japanese. A lot of them had trouble understanding that these short, skinny nerdy looking guys could possibly defeat them in battle.
Britain lost all the major battles in WWII - fall of Singapore is just a logical event in that chain. Britain could fight only with African tribes.

My great great grandfather was 1 of victims killed by Japanese soldier during world war 2 his head will chop by Japanese soldier!!
Yep they outnumbered the Japanese and some speculation was that they had more ammo then the Japanese. It all boils down to leadership and perceptions.
An excellent question. The British forgot their reading of Sn Tzu's classic ON WAR written in the 5th Century, BC. Sun Tzu stated, "NEVER underestimate your opponent." The British did this and in addition, General Yamashita was a far superior commander and tactician.

1:02 This is battle flag. Do you know why not be repaired?
I know western militaries it's considered an honor to have damage to one's battle flag, and it's rarely fully repaired until after a campaign/battle. I would guess this unit is doing something similar and had their flag damaged in battle and is parading with it to show off, essentially. They will probably have it repaired or place it in their home base on display after this parade.
Maybe the video is a regiment of the Fifth Division organized in the late 1880s. The reason is that the 5th Division was in the center of the 32nd Army and many photographers were also brought together. This regimental flag did not mean that the fabric deteriorated over a long period of time, insects ate and decayed, and only the surrounding bunch remained, and it was hit by bullets or cut by enemy soldiers. The regimental flag is an honor given by His Majesty the Emperor at the time of organization, and it does not replace or repair it just because it is damaged, so it became a military flag with only such a cell as a historical regiment.
