How the war shaped me: Remembering the fall of S'pore, 80 years on. str.sg/wWBf
We are the last generation to be able to hear WW2 stories from the affected people directly
The legacy of this war
That is something that our generation will appreciate more nowadays
This war affected families that lived during that time
Singapore has not been the same since then
But I love that survivors of that war was still around even in the years to come when this war is not remembered well
We all need to play our part on remembering the war that affected families that are Grandfathers, fathers or Sons that took part of and hoping the future generations don't forget what the past has done to our present and hope that another world war never happens again.
😢😢
my heart hurt at madam sim's visceral grief for her father. 80 years of pain and suffering.
Good reporting as it makes us be grateful for the peace and harmony we have today.
My interest has been mostly focused on the capture of British service men, one of whom was my dear father. He survived 3.5 years in atrocious conditions of starvation, deprivation and cruelty and it is important to me to learn of the impact 80 years ago on the civilian population - We Will Remember Them!
This war affect aot of people in Singapore back then
This war changed the country we all call home
To me I hope that this war will still be remembered as it was the war that changed Singapore it is today
Please, if you get time; tell me his story. The Japs still need to acknowledge their cruelty.
Wow my great grandma is also a survivor she was 9 when Japan attacked Singapore and now she is 92
war always destroys families and happiness, as an indonesian who has been living in a peaceful time, its scary & sad to hear these heart breaking war stories.. 🙏🏽
Probably the last few who sang Kimigayo as their national anthem for 2 years. Didn't occur to me how the survivors felt there and then, when I was browsing the exhibits couple of months back,. Watching this made me realize how painful it was for survivors like Mdm Sim and Mr Peter Loh to experience the loss of their loved ones right before their eyes and to recall it after so many years. My grandfather was very young when the war broke out, but having grown up in a different era was impossible for me to comprehend the hardship our forefathers went through in those tumultuous years
Imagine suffering through hard times where your parents died and reporters force you to recount it 80 years later even if it gives you PTSD and make you sad
Amazing 91yr old mind still alert like a mouse and speaks english better than my oxford educated cat!
sadly my 94yr old grandma cant remember what she ate for breakfast
A mouse?! 🤔
@@rgravi ever tried catching a mouse??

Thanks ST for this. I am a history teacher and will be showing this to my students before I commence my lesson on how Singapore fell to the Japanese during WW2. I hope its of meaningful impact to them.
Lies again? Believe Japan Ramenten Rakuten
@@NazriB -tf you mean by lies again!!!!-
The song that grandfather sang called the "Gunkan March" or "Gunkan Koushinkyoku". This song is the official march of the Imperial Japanese Navy and it is still using by the JMSDF (Japan Martime-Self Defence Force).
mammoru no senno runo kurogaremo......
My great grand mother was in ww2 she passed away I’m a singaporean I can feel the pain❤
Singapore is stronger now❤
We can forgive but never forget!!!!!
Singaporeans, forgive but never forget.
This is why National Service is important.
We got to protect ourselves, no one's going to do it for you.
Don't expect US to protect us.. they only know how to sanction
Yes, never forget the traitors who became translators for the Japanese Secret Police.
This is not correct, there are already so many malingerers/chao keng in NS, what makes you think they will defend us in times of war? They should convert it to professional army so that soldiers are paid fairly, as it is, conscription is forced cheap labour.
My grandfather was also one of the World War ll survivors
I hope that the world can have peace so no one will have to experience this
My grandpa passed away years ago. He told me that he saw Japanese soldier threw babies up the sky and bayonet infront of his eyes. My grandma's father been taken by Japanese and never came back.. Never.. 😢
"...taken... and never came back..." - much of their remains were found at various beach sites in Singapore in last few decades.
There were Japanese collaborators amongst the Singaporeans. Lee Kuan Yew and SR Nathan did work for the Japanese invaders. How they slept at night is anyone’s guess. Seeing how much death and suffering the people had to endure.
Founder Memorial will forever memorize some of these men.
Lest we forget
We also need to find out what happened to out civillian force labour(Malaya and Spore) during the construction of Death Railway... where is their burial ground...
My grandfather was also taken away by the Japanese and was never seen again. My grandmother had to bring up 8 children on her own.
During the japanese world war, all people have no food to have . They could only eat food, leaves and trees. This was heart wrenching. My grandmother ran away from japanese soldiers , and injured her ankle continue running and survived. She was very weak and dementia
I have a relative his son hiding at well and escape and survive
We can never experienced what they felt…. Only thing is… respect respect and still respect….
My grandparents survived the world war 2 , my grandad became a famous doctor . My grandad was divided into two rows , the row which went home . All man who went back home was weak and the japanese does not want them
They will choose all the very muscular and fit man for bye bye
Then he still ask his friend why never go lorry, his friend asked him not to ask
My great grandfather was a Hakka Chinese who left his village in Guangdong to live in Singapore in 1941. My grandmother never heard from him again, no money ever got sent back from overseas. The massacre was systematic, it was a genocide of Chinese men.
Do not applaud me
It is not i
Who speaks to you
But
Histoty which speaks
Through my mouth
Never forget, never forgive, never again
So sad for this woman. I come back to these old videos to learn more. These men and women of my parents/grandparents era. How they suffered so much. Yet still sacrificed so much to work, earn snd raise their own families in singapore! So much pride. Nowadays the snowflake generation dont know what real suffering is.
Finally, the Japanese surrendered to the Allied Forces at Singapore on 12 September 1945
Hey that’s a nice try hah but Yes Finally, the Kuomintang lost the civil war and then fled like cowards to the island of Taiwan.
My grandfather John Roberts was a telegraphist in Darwin post office during the second world war
日本人はこのことについて知らない人の方が多いかもしれません。
0:50 it is haunting when he sings that tune.
Never forgive them for what they did.
Same even though I always wanted to go there
where is the place they saw what happened
3:07 Died Selfishly
Fort Siloso very interesting....wow+
I feel so sorry for Singaporeans who lost their lives during Japanese occupation. Unfortunately, abusing pow and civilian are barely taught to Japanese students. I learnt those tragedies through English articles not something written in Japanese as if they are trying to cover up dark side of history.
All secrets gone already. A lot passed on and a lot have dementia cant remember.
time to give cod liver oil and sunlight walk everyday as mandatory requirement national service to all upon attaining age of 85
Most probably this old folk may still be around to see WW3 unfold between the timeline of today until 2024.
Me will try to stay alive to that day
Seeing the Russo Ukrainian war might bring back memories
😥
I sincerely hope those Sinkies who support Russia can watch this and grow a spine.
I love the books of James Clavell...Rat king about prisoners of war singapore
😭
Yeaaaa
Idk why i sayed that😐
🇸🇬
Japan need to pay a price for this ......
It would be nice if they remembered. I have lived in Japan for 23 years & this is the first time I have heard of this massacre.
the Great Hanshin earthquake 1995
@NathanialHiggers Do you knock on doors and run away when you're not online, too?
@NathanialHiggers Really? How is the graveyard? Tidy?
You ever thought for a moment if not WW2, no independent ASEAN countries except Thailand? We would be serving UK
What museum is that?
National Museum of Singapore
Please do not forget the brutality of the Japanese. How could they be so cruel? And now no atonement. It is disgusting.
不思議な事に、日本以外のアジアの国は第二次世界大戦が起こる前まで基本的に奴隷国家か誰も気にしない極貧国でしたが、現在裕福なアジアの場所の多くは日本の支配や統治を受けた国や都市であるという事です。
wtf is he yapping about. What is your point?
Wow how historical and it moves my heart
This is all Percival's fault
Jahat gila Jepun dulu².
@NathanialHiggers you are talking about your brain capacity? Oh I am sorry.
Apa kurangnya kezaliman komunis kepada orang melayu di Singapura waktu itu?

Sugar coating the unanswered situation of our current difficulties of this new generation with past that cannot be changed.
Japan face this sort of thing until today. The 3000 usa military units in Japan is a punishment to them. USA even does nuclear testing there.
japanese want the us military bases. we want to leave japan and have pushed japan to increase its defense expenditure.
>USA even does nuclear testing there.

Long live Chinese communist party
Chinese people tend to be against allowing people to have guns such as what is allowed in the US.
But the Nanjing massacre and Sook Ching are prime examples of why it is important for men and women to have military weapons.
I'm Stuck in Pokemon era😂
Japan helped free ASEAN from western colonialism.
按照你这个逻辑,中国现在应该进攻日本和韩国,帮助他们赶走美军
Thats just bs ngl.
