    Aussie's switched to metric in the 70's so I'm guessing phrases like "flew for miles" stick around a lot longer than when they are actually giving a distance.

      Same here in Ireland. We use metric for most things here these days, but we still talk about things being miles/inches away if they're far or near. Even my Polish girlfriend uses those turns of phrase despite never using them as actual measurements.

    "Miles" in phrases really doesn't depend on the actual system of measurement of the country. Even in countries like Germany, where the metric system has existed for over 100 years, we still say "meilenweit" (for miles) to describe a more or less defined long distance when speaking.

    I think "stuff" in Aussie slang is versatile. It's a less vulgar stand-in for worse words. "Get stuffed" but also, "Well, stuff! That didn't work." In old-time Brit slang, it meant pregnant, among other things.

    Cricket bats are made in 2 pieces, when they start falling apart it turns into kind of a hinge, so the bat generated more energy when it swung before breaking

      I found it interesting that, here, the bat broke at the handle, rather than with the triangle piece coming out. I'm actually guessing (from the look of the physics going on) that if the bat had been sturdy and unbroken, the ball would've gone a good 10-20 yards further given that hit. Either way though, fair play to her, it was a fun moment in a great innings from the looks of things.

    • @marklnz

      I think what you mean is that the handle and the blade are made separately, then glued together. The handle is often (always?) made from multiple pieces of wood that are, again, glued together with layers of rubber in between, then bound with twine, before having a rubber grip rolled out over the top.

    • @amireallythatgrumpy6508

  • @flamingfrancis
    @flamingfrancis 9 місяців тому +2

    To understand the event here baseball people need to know that the cricket bat is nothing like the baseball / softball bat in its' construction. The latter is historically a machined tapered cylindrical solid piece of a selected wood, traditionally American Ash. The cricket bat has a stamped / rolled and shaped blade with a handle spliced into the top of the blade. That handle is traditionally layered pieces of cane with rubber membrane in between layers. Then wound with a cotton string and covered with a rubber sleeve / handle. Bats sometimes develop a creak or looseness in that handle but remain effective for striking force; Batter Grace clearly states she is hearing a creaking on previous deliveries. Batsmen have been given out because the umpire heard this noise thinking it was a snick / edge of bat on ball.
    The better bats are still hand made by very skilled tradesmen using old techniques and the preferred English Willow wood used for centuries.

    They say miles just like we use tons(tonnes). We both choose the bigger measurement to exaggerate the point. It is why when I go to make a very large point or make emphasis about something, I enjoy using the phrase, "a metric fuck-ton" because the metric ton is bigger than the ton, and well even the 5 yr olds know a ton is a lot. Then you add in a new word to it and it gets even bigger....mind is blown. Then when they get to be college level and they learn that infinity+1 is real....

    • @Kenjeezy
      @Kenjeezy 9 місяців тому +1

      Not necessarily true. Whilst you are correct about trying to emphasise or exaggerate a point, its not about it being the longer unit of measurement. The vast majority of aussies wouldnt even know how far a mile is or if it was longer than a km.
      Its probably more to do with the expression pre-dating the metric system here and the fact its just easier to say.

      Highest individual score in the WBBL. Record keeping in the WBBL seems a bit sloppy, but I eventually found a table in an ABC article with the top scores she beat.
      114* (64) - Smriti Mandhana, Sydney Thunder, 2021
      114 (52) - Ash Gardner, Sydney Sixers, 2017
      112* (69) - Alyssa Healy, Sydney Sixers, 2018
      111 (52) - Alyssa Healy, Sydney Sixers, 2020
      So it's not only a record but a fairly comfortable one - she beat the previous record by 32 runs. It's also comfortably the fastest innings on the list (Strike rate for this innings of 230, next best was Gardner with 219)

      Baseball takes the same amount of time to play, has half the deliveries thrown, 3 walks per game, and low scores virtually give the notoriously unreliable on-field umpires complete control over the result. Know what I'd rather watch.

      Given that a cricket ball is made of cork, it wouldn't have the effect it does in baseball.

    Australians are basically British people who claim to be a different country. Their slangs are mostly derived from British slangs and they still use phrases with English imperial units despite fully following the metric system.

    Honestly how hard can this game be?! Your hitting the ball off a bounce.......

    • @amireallythatgrumpy6508
      @amireallythatgrumpy6508 9 місяців тому +7

      Which actually makes it *harder* not easier. In cricket, a ball that does NOT bounce is considered extremely hittable

    • @JPH1138
      @JPH1138 9 місяців тому +2

      It's perfectly legal to bounce the ball at the guy's head at 95mph+. The ball also has an elevated seam, so when it's bowled properly it changes directions when bouncing. Look up Brett Lee bowling to Piers Morgan and Shane Warne wicket compilations to understand what I'm talking about.

    • @cricketexplained8526
      @cricketexplained8526 9 місяців тому +2

      Bear in mind the ball often deviates off the ground, and that the bounce sometimes is more or less than you think it will be.

      you hit a lot more runs than in baseball. if you get out once though your day is done. So its a completely different mindset. Its almost like a completely different sport.
