You should do a breakdown of that Aussie bowler getting 6 wickets in 4 overs in The Ashes! And talk about how INSANE that is, especially in test cricket (can last up to 5 days). Guy basically got 6/10 of the batting team out in 24 pitches, playing a format where a team can spend all day (typically more than 50 overs/300 pitches) batting before getting 10 outs.

For the americans watching, Trent Boult is in New Zealands international side, a truly great bowler who is basically an automatic lock for any game, any condition. He also bats 11, which is dead last, essentially the (International) team is saying "Boult is our worst batter" so for him to smack a six off his second ball under that much pressure was a magnificent sight.
@@JonSnow-pi6jb Lockie's a bit better than Boulty but not by much, depending on the team selection he'll bat 9 or 10, but again, he's a world class bowler, he's not expected to make large runs. Also, funnily enough Boult actually has the world record for most sixes hit as a no11 batsman in test cricket haha
It is crazy how often cricket comes down to the last or last few balls! Especially for the Black Caps (New Zealands national team) in ODIs (One Day Internationals, 50 overs ea side, so 600 balls bowled). So tense but soooo good!!!
Test cricket is over 100 hundred years old, the amount of countries playing x amount of tests in over 100 years is A LOT. There have only been 2 tied test series
Also just a quick clarification Jimmy, but the batsman doesn't get credited a run when a wide is bowled. The team gets a run, and it's scored under the extras category.
Something I've never seen before... notice how the last batter, Clarke, came in with 32 runs? This is because Clarke was forced to "retire hurt" (injured) earlier in the innings, but apparently was OK enough to come back in and bat after the 9th wicket fell. I honestly have never seen that before, but apparently that's a thing that can happen! (retire hurt does NOT mean you're out, but if that batter absolutely can't continue, a team can end their innings after just nine outs instead of the customary ten.)
Sad story but true, Phillip Hughes was killed in 2014 playing for South Australia. He was marked down as ''retired hurt'' but the controlling authority instructed the score keeper to change the scorebook to ''not out''. This is the only time a controlling authority has interferred in a game of professional cricket in 200 years.

In case anyone wants to know why the second ball was not faced by the new batsman, on the first ball of the over that was the high fly ball before being caught, there was enough time for the batsmen to run between the wickets. They therefore ‘crossed (ran past each other) before the ball was caught’. The new batsmen therefore stands at the non-facing end. This is advantageous as the person who will face the next ball should be more up to game speed and better able to deal with the next ball/pitch. Except of course, he wasn’t…
Lol thank you! I noticed the change/non-change. When a ball is deemed wide and the batting team get a run, does that count as a bowl in the over or do they just rebowl?
@@Ibangedmatt Wides, or no balls (a no ball is any other illegal ball, which can include too high on the fly, too high off the bounce, bouncing twice before the batsman, or bowlers foot being too far forward when bowling, as the most common ones) are all rebowled and basically there is a free run for the batting side. It doesn't count to the total
@@fiqihfandrian8416 he must have left the game for some minor injury. You can retire a batsman not out if they are hurt or the opposing captain and umpire agree
Love the cricket content, and the fact that you're being noticed by the broadcasters in my hemisphere. Just a technical point. If the bowler bowls a wide, it is counted as a run, but the batsman doesn't get credit for it. It is marked by the scorer as an "extra". When you look at the score card, you'll see all the batsmen listed in order, and then under all of them, the extras. Apparently, the third highest scorer for England this year in test cricket (the 5 day version, so think of it as marathon cricket) is extras.
As an Australian, English cricket being this terrible again is like a wave of nostalgia (For the Americans who might be reading this, the rivalry between Australia and England is the oldest and biggest in cricket; think Yankees/Red Sox level. And for my whole life starting in 1989 until 2005, Australia never lost a series against England)
The thing about (ahem cough cough) *Trent Boult is he's an amazing Bowler, this was not expected of him, which makes it even more fantastic. It also probably led to an easier ball being thrown, as the bowler didn't expect Boult to be able to get this.

If you fancy doing it, I think a breakdown of the difference between spin and pace bowlers (with some footage of the best of each) would be really interesting for your American audience. Knowing nothing about baseball, the way you explained in your previous videos what the pitcher and catcher were doing in terms of tactical signals, spin/fade, and positioning within the strike zone was an absolute revelation!

Hey Jomboy, glad to see you're getting into cricket since I grew up watching it alongside baseball. I was thinking you should do some breakdowns about some historic moments throughout cricket history, specifically international cricket. Obviously you do you in terms of what content you'd like to create but there are some really special and interesting moments I'd love to see you breakdown.
Underrated aspect of this: Ed Nuttall, the bowler bowling this last over, conceded 29 runs off a single over earlier in the match. If he'd won it with this final over, it would have been an incredible comeback.
Yeah I laughed at the SCENE at the end (6:24) also, assumed it was a fun little play on words he stuck in at the end, never would have guessed it was a mistake unless he comes out and says so...
"Lovely" Trenty (as he's affectionately known), is a clutch player. International standard swing/seam bowler, absolute madman in the field (check some of his catches!), and as this clip shows, no slouch at scoring a few quick runs at the death (end of the innings). He's a bit of a national hero in NZ.
I'm a Canadian and there is a small but enthusiastic cricket league out here on the west coast in Victoria. I knew nothing about cricket but after meeting some people I somehow found myself playing and fell in love with the game in my early 20's. Terrific sport and some great traditions....like between each teams innings there is a tea time break with beer and sandwiches for everyone! That was during the 50 over version on the weekends. A second league played 20/20 in the evenings or just 16 overs depending on the sunlight and afterwards we'd head to our sponsor pubs. Great memories.
A subtle insight is that Clarke appeared to have 32(12) when he came out. Which probably meant he batted earlier in the innings, then retired hurt, then came back in as the last batter in a last ditch attempt for his team to win - and they did.
Ahhhhh, cricket is so refined and gentlemanly. I almost expected Sir Trent to flip his bat so gloriously into the air, but no-no! Just an ever-so-subtle fist-pump to celebrate the end of the match. Cheers to you, Sir Trent, and to cricket!
"and a new batter named Boult has come in, and we're at the back end of the batting order" Boults been at the back end of most International matches the Black Caps have play for the last 10 years. He's slogged a few 6s in his day, so of course he's the one to step up and bring the game home.
His experience of being in the same position as a bowler and therefore knowing exactly what Nuttall was thinking would have given Boulty a nice advantage here.
I'd love Jomboy to do breakdown of Englands 2nd innings from the Ashes Boxing Day test from the MCG, especially Scott Boland's bowling effort. It was incredible, crowd going crazy, insane. Probably be too hard to get the rights for it.
@@dampaul13 And much harder when it's a sport you have no previous relationship with, as opposed to a sport whose rights management people you've been working with on a daily basis for years. That's the point he's making, genius.

@@wyattmund9286 Yes, those are called "leg byes" - just like "byes" except off the batter's body. ("Byes" are runs the batter takes after he's missed it, it misses him but the wicketkeeper/catcher also misses it.)

New American fan here. Started watching t20 thanks to jomboy. I decided to try out the ashes and see if i could watch it. I was on the edge of my seat watching Boland and loved it. @Jomboy media should definitely do a breakdown.
Lol just when he explains to Americans that 0(0) means the batter has scored no runs and seen no balls yet, a new batter Clarke comes in to bat with 31(11) already to his name. Lol. Seasoned fans like me would know that Clarke must've retired hurt earlier in the innings, and now came back when he's recovered from his injury and ready to resume batting.
He actually said "hit" and in a New Zealand accent, Australian vowels are shifted weirdly to American ears, but New Zealand vowels are on another level
it's funny that you'd say "why don't they just throw an unhittable ball", this exact situation happened in a match between new zealand and australia in 1981, new zealand needed a 6 to win, and the australian bowler rolled the ball underarm down the pitch to stop the batsman from hitting it properly. people are still upset about it
I'm glad you're promoting cricket to America. Indeed, for those who don't know, the USA national cricket team is hosting Ireland over the next few days.
@@analcommando1124 there are plenty of top class relief pitchers and they do hit starters in extras too when they run out of position players to be honest

A subtle insight is that Clarke appeared to have 32(12) when he came out. Which probably meant he batted earlier in the innings, then retired hurt, then came back in as the last batter in a last ditch attempt for his team to win - and they did.
Yes, that's what happened.
Absolutely loving the cricket coverage!!
As a kiwi, it’s always great to see NZ sports on here, but as a man from Canterbury, this video = pain
Jomboy got me invested into another ball game. Thanks for broadening my horizons of the sports world bud.
Can we get a break down of the Australia domination over England in their test cricket matchup?
Too soon, the POMS are still crying into their cuppa tea mate
Scotty bolanddddd
Jomboy should break down at least one of the many recorded England batting collapses
I have a feeling there will be some copyright issues with that. A reason he's doing the NZ leagues is cause they don't care about that crap.
The Boultergeist does it all.
Not sure if I'll ever fully understand cricket but I'm here for it!
Boult put the screws in the losing team .
I was gonna go and search for the call after your video if it wasn't there. You're the best brother!
I'd love Jomboy to do breakdown of Englands 2nd innings from the Ashes Boxing Day test from the MCG, especially Scott Boland's bowling effort. It was incredible, crowd going crazy, insane.
Probably be too hard to get the rights for it.
He hasn't levelled up to test matches yet.
@@MaggotDiggo1 I think you'll find that it's hard to gain access to the media/digital rights to many sports.
@@dampaul13 And much harder when it's a sport you have no previous relationship with, as opposed to a sport whose rights management people you've been working with on a daily basis for years. That's the point he's making, genius.
So glad I stumbled upon your channel always wonder how cricket worked and now I’m binge watching breakdowns
That was actually entertaining
Kudos to Jomboy that even if baseball is his main niche, he is still doing videos of various world sports. I was so happy that he did hockey reviews. I hope that one day he will do Australian Football or rugby one day.
He did a breakdown of the recent All Blacks v France test match so covering Aus rugby may not be far away
@@jrwntctv8091 I have to watch that. I remember that game.
Commentators might say a catch is "taken for the wicket" but you'd usually just say they were caught out.
Oh also the batter doesn't score from a wide, just the team does. So happy to see more cricket content on this channel!
@@tomdron Right, it’s counted as an extra, like non lbw hits off the batsman’s body that go for a fee runs?
@@wyattmund9286 Yes, those are called "leg byes" - just like "byes" except off the batter's body. ("Byes" are runs the batter takes after he's missed it, it misses him but the wicketkeeper/catcher also misses it.)
They were caught, but where? slips, gully, silly point, extra cover, silly mid on, silly mid off, caught and bowled, cows corner, long mid on/off, deep cover, short mid on/off, etc etc
I never understood cricket until you started these videos
So great to see Jomboy do cricket. Any chance of covering Boland taking 6fer in the Ashes in the third test?
New American fan here. Started watching t20 thanks to jomboy. I decided to try out the ashes and see if i could watch it. I was on the edge of my seat watching Boland and loved it. @Jomboy media should definitely do a breakdown.
2nd aboriginal to play it’s sent Australia into a frenzy
It’s crazy 6 for 7 on your debut at the g can’t get much better
PLEASE keep doing cricket videos. I'm an American who got into this great game a bit over a year ago, would love to see some test match highlights too
Do you reckon you could do a breakdown of Australia dismantling England yesterday?
ICC will probably take it down but Im going to try
@@JomboyMedia ok thank you👍
@SynthMusicFan 501 There are a couple of BBL breakdowns from two or three weeks ago that don't appear to have been struck down.
"Trent Boult's done it! He's hit a six!". The New Zealand accent has it's nuances.
Hey Jomboy. You need to check out the Alternative Commentary Collective. They do a bang up job of cricket commentary
Really enjoying this Cricket content. The strategy and different ways things can go are really interesting!
So the baseball equivalent of this is a pitcher hitting a walkoff homer
exactly it
Jomboy is an international treasure
Lol just when he explains to Americans that 0(0) means the batter has scored no runs and seen no balls yet, a new batter Clarke comes in to bat with 31(11) already to his name. Lol.
Seasoned fans like me would know that Clarke must've retired hurt earlier in the innings, and now came back when he's recovered from his injury and ready to resume batting.
Correct. He was the opening batter. A blow to the hip meant he could not run.
I am loving this Cricket content!! Never understood Cricket but you make it seem really simple lol
You should do a breakdown of England v New Zealand cricket World Cup final 2019.
we are still trying to figure that one out
@@jameswestover8403 I still wonder what happened that day
nailed it. nice work Jomboy
I’m glad you put subtitles for the live call, “he’s had six” with an Australian accent doesn’t translate well to American ears
He actually said "hit" and in a New Zealand accent, Australian vowels are shifted weirdly to American ears, but New Zealand vowels are on another level
That is a New Zealand accent
it's funny that you'd say "why don't they just throw an unhittable ball", this exact situation happened in a match between new zealand and australia in 1981, new zealand needed a 6 to win, and the australian bowler rolled the ball underarm down the pitch to stop the batsman from hitting it properly. people are still upset about it
Yes including me
@@bazookacantgame including my dad! 😂
I'm glad you're promoting cricket to America. Indeed, for those who don't know, the USA national cricket team is hosting Ireland over the next few days.
and have played them well both matches so far
@@JomboyMedia please pin this comment
@@JomboyMedia Indeed!
Thanks for a great explanation of cricket! Happy New Year!!
The accent of the commentator made six sound like sex. I was laughing pretty hard at the end with that interpretation.
fush and chups bro
Lol cool video, congrats for the shout out that's awesome love your videos!
You should do more rugby breakdowns as well.
Also, are you excited for the he upcoming MLC cricket league (hopefully) commencing in 2023?
Yes pretty excited. I hope it all comes together well
Forget rugby union, most of us have, its turned into penalty shoot outs
@@jameswestover8403 That's how it started the 20th century - only one two tries a game was typical.
@@jameswestover8403 League is for homosexuals though so...
Never knew how cricket worked at all until you explained it what an ending honestly that last pitcher as a bit of a cookie lol
This is the equivalent to a relief pitcher hitting a walk off home run in extra innings because they ran out of position players to DH
more like a top pitcher in the NL getting a walk off. Trent Boult has been a top class bowler for a number of years.
@@analcommando1124 there are plenty of top class relief pitchers and they do hit starters in extras too when they run out of position players to be honest
Im enjoying learning about cricket from your channel
The cliff notes: Cricket is ridiculous and no amount of familiar baseball terms will help in understanding this game that seemingly defies all logic and reason. 😜
Gotta do Peter Siddle hatrick on his birthday test match. 1 of many legendary moments in Aussie cricket. On his birthday, in the ashes when they were haveing a terrible series. You will get a chance to explain the 3rd umpire situation as well!
They weren't having a terrible series at that point though. It was at the end of the first day of the first test.
Best in the business. Keep on being amazing Jimmy. You are bringing the commoner into royal engagements.
You a genius Jomboy! Bringing cricket to the american masses, almost brings a tear to my eye.
fantasric coverage! really enjoy your channel!
Greatly appreciate your videos explaining Cricket in Baseball terms. Having said that there is no comparison as to which game is more exciting, technical, statistical, etc. For one the fielders don't have gloves so even a simple catch in baseball is not so simple in Cricket.
I love your ability to take something I had no connection to 5 minutes before and transform it into me being on the edge of my seat
Keep up the cricket alalysis! I'm glad to see the coverage
cheers mate. good call.
S/o to jomboy for growing the game. That was electric
He’s had six with the Aussie/ New Zealander accent is something I didn’t know I needed
i am losing my mind over how good these cricket videos are thank you Jomboy!
Loving the cricket content! Keep it up!
You did a great job explaining cricket too
